Welcome... 

It’s not what you know, it’s who 

you know. 

That’s not a proverb I‘m particularly keen on 

saying. It smacks of a defeatist attitude, convincing 

oneself that any capacity to progress is more dependent 

upon others than on our own abilities. But there is no 

denying the truth behind those words, with plenty of nepotistic 

examples in the world of politics and business to prove the point. 

On a more philosophical level, perhaps it’s a saying we should all 

embrace a bit more, if only to remind us that knowing people is 

important. After all, that’s how communities are built. Lockdown 

has certainly taught us that. And I expect all of us know at least 

one person a little better today than we did before 23 March. 

But furthermore, I expect many among us have also acquired 

a new skill, learnt a new trade or mastered a new hobby since 

those early lockdown days, so the ‘what you know’ is clearly still 

important, even if it plays second fiddle to the ‘who’. 

As a community magazine editor, knowing people is 

fundamental. It’s the difference between filling these pages 

with insights into the lives of those who live here and filling 

these pages with insights into the lives of those who don’t 

(celebrity gossip, anyone?). It’s the difference between a 

community magazine and a magazine that just happens to be 

distributed within a community. With that in mind, perhaps I 

need to become more at peace with the phrase, it’s not what 

you know, it’s who you know. After all, it’s the very essence of 

this publication, albeit with a very location-specific 

requirement for the ‘who’. How best to 

encapsulate that in a snappy sentence? 

It’s not what you know, it’s where 

you know.

Redbridge Council consults residents to 

make Wanstead’s streets quieter and safer 

Wanstead is one 

of seven areas in 

Redbridge chosen by 

the council to be part 

of its Quiet Streets 

initiative. “Wanstead 

has always been a 

green and quiet place 

and our objective is 

to try and enhance 

that. This programme 

will aim to reduce 

speeding, rat running 

and create more space 

for people to walk and 

cycle safely around the neighbourhood. At 

the start of lockdown, everyone noticed how 

much quieter the streets were and it would be 

good if we could keep some of the benefits of 

that. We want to have streets that are quieter, 

with more places for planting, and safe for our

has received more than £500k from TfL to fund

No ‘viable alternative to closure’ for 

St Joseph’s School in Wanstead 

Campaign calls on council to expand 

Wanstead’s Grow Zones project

The school on Cambridge 

Park was founded in 1918 

St Joseph’s School in Wanstead was closed 

down last month having failed to find a new 

owner. “It is with the deepest sadness that 

the trustees of the Institute of Our Lady of 

Mercy have reluctantly taken the decision to 

close the school. We know there were hopes 

the school could be saved and a new owner 

found who would continue the school’s 

unique ethos. However, despite our best 

efforts, sadly, we have not been able to find a 

viable alternative to closure,” said Chair of the 

Trustees Sister Colette. 

Proposals for new cycling routes 

through Wanstead Park 

A group of local cyclists are proposing a 

trial of three new shared-use routes – for 

pedestrians and cyclists – in Wanstead Park. 

“There has been a marked increase in the 

number of people cycling in the park since 

lockdown began. We would like to see 

some positive changes, which protect both 

walkers and cyclists,” said a Redbridge Cycling 

spokesperson. The routes include a path from 

Wanstead Park Avenue to Warren Road and a 

path connecting Warren Road with the Ilford

Grow Zone on George 

Green, Wanstead 

A campaign is calling on Redbridge Council 

to extend Wanstead’s Grow Zones project to 

other parts of the borough. “Grow Zones are 

areas on the edges of parks and road verges 

where the grass is left to grow long and 

naturalise with wild flowers over spring and 

summer… Wild areas can help nature thrive 

in cities and are a low-cost way the council 

can help address the biodiversity crisis,” said 

a spokesperson for Wild Wanstead, which has 

been working on the project with the council

An open-air cinema will be screening Disney 

classic Finding Nemo and horror-comedy The 

Lost Boys in Wanstead this month. The event 

– which will take place from 8.30pm on 29 

August at Eton Manor RFC (adults: £8; under- 

16s: £5) – will also offer a BBQ and bar service, 

with the opportunity for families to camp 

the night at the Nutter Lane site (additional 

charges apply). Eton Manor RFC is also seeking 

to raise £15,000 to improve their kitchen and 

clubhouse and to renew the outside seating

The annual Aldersbrook Jumble Trail – in aid of 

Aldersbrook Primary School – is set to return 

on 8 August, having been postponed while 

lockdown restrictions were in place. “Make 

a trip over to Aldersbrook and Lakehouse

allows you to connect with your community 

while selling unwanted things, and all money 

raised from stall fees will go directly to the 

school,” said a spokesperson. The event runs

at Eton Manor RFC 

Eton Manor RFC has raised £930 for charity 

by holding clothes sales at the Nutter Lane 

venue. “On 28 June and 19 July we held clothes 

sales with items donated by the community. 

Wanstead bakers also made cakes for us to 

sell… The proceeds will go to The Corner 

House Project and will be used to support the 

homeless in the coming winter months. We 

would like to thank everyone who donated so 

generously and a massive thank you to all the 

volunteers who sorted clothes and helped at 

the sales,” said a club spokesperson.

place confirmed in record books 

National Lottery grant secures future 

of Wanstead Parish churches

A Snaresbrook Primary School pupil who 

broke the world record for ‘most flips of a 

plastic bottle in one minute’ has finally had 

his place in the record books confirmed. 

Daniel Giorgetti was 11 when he performed 47 

successful flips – beating the previous record 

by eight – on 9 July 2019, with Guinness World 

Records formally confirming his achievement 

last month, having reviewed the video 

evidence. Only flips in which the half-filled 

water bottle rotated through 360º and landed

Wanstead Parish has secured a £72,500 grant 

from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. “This 

will enable the church council to appoint a 

team with expertise in ecclesiastic buildings 

to undertake a governance review and 

commission surveys and reports on both 

church buildings in the parish. This will help us 

explore how the churches may be reordered 

to better serve the wider community, the 

churchyard used more effectively and also 

how the carbon footprint of our buildings may 

be reduced,” said a church spokesperson.

meeting last month to discuss the plans to 

rebuild Whipps Cross Hospital. “The speakers, 

including John Cryer MP, had two key 

messages. First, we cannot stand back and 

allow the new hospital to be built with too 

few beds for our growing population. Second, 

the new hospital must be environmentally 

sustainable, the first zero-carbon hospital 

in the UK,” said Wanstead resident Charlotte

The Tin in the Bin Network has set itself 

a target to reach 18 tonnes of foodbank 

donations by the end of August. “We’re 

currently at around 13 tonnes, but we are 

worried as donations tend to drop in the 

summer. Cash donations have been incredible; 

we’ve raised over £5,500 and have been able 

to buy things that Redbridge Foodbank don’t 

get much of – canned meat, washing powder 

and shower gel, for example,” said James

Local teenager seeks sponsorship for 

finals of Miss Junior Teen GB

A teenager from Wanstead is seeking support 

from local businesses having won a place 

in the finals of Miss Junior Teen GB 2020. 

Thirteen-year-old Layla Badowska will take her 

place on stage at the competition’s climax in 

Blackpool this October if she can secure £350 

of sponsorship. “Her dream has come true, 

and this is just one example of a young mind 

staying determined and focused against all 

the challenges of COVID-19, including being 

stuck abroad for four months!” said Layla’s

Christchurch Green for the summer to help 

alleviate the high levels of rubbish being left 

there. “There is a Vision RCL staff member on 

site all the time at the moment, to help clear 

the waste. There have also been enforcement 

officers issuing fines for littering… No doubt 

much of the waste is due to the increased 

use of the park on sunny days, as well as the 

pandemic. But it would be to the benefit of all 

if people could take their rubbish home with

WANSTEAD 

– ALWAYS IN VOGUE – 

As a portrait photographer who became as 

famous as his celebrity subjects, David Bailey 

needs no introduction. As a ‘place of heaven 

in the East End’, Wanstead Park needs no 

introduction either. When Mr Bailey took his 

camera to the park during lockdown, the 

result was his 99th cover for British Vogue

Long ago, when I was a child in the East 

End of London, a German, for some 

reason, wanted to kill me. His name 

was Hitler, as you may have guessed. He 

was one of only three men whose name I 

knew. The others were Stalin and Churchill. 

Anyway, Hitler caused me the most 

aggravation. He always sent his air force over 

to bomb me at say six o’clock or in the late 

afternoon, which was when Toy Town came 

on the radio. This went on for a short period of 

my life until I was about seven and a half. The 

Blitz was over and Hitler was dead, and sadly, I 

had outgrown Toy Town. 

A bike was my friend and I could roam 

wherever it took me, together with my mate 

Roy. Mostly around the East End, where all 

the bombed buildings were my playground. 

But then I discovered a place of magic called 

Wanstead Park. This wonderful place was not 

full of broken glass and shrapnel. (I missed the 

shrapnel – I had a great collection of it.) But 

this place was perfect with its lakes and what 

seemed to me a jungle of trees. And to top it 

all, the bluebells in the spring. 

The park has never lost its magic. I still 

visit whenever I can to see the ruin of the 

boathouse I thought was Dick Turpin’s 

hideaway, and the mystery of the old manor 

house that was pulled down long ago. 

It was, and still is, a place of heaven in the 

East End.

Wanstead’s Cottages 

Residents will recall the conversion of the Old Cottage Antiques shop 

on the High Street into two small houses in 2018. But were there more 

of these cottages? Dr Colin Runeckles takes a look back in time 

Before the entire High Street was 

numbered completely in the mid- 

1920s, 6–8 High Street were known as 

Wanstead Cottages. But when I began to 

look back at census returns in the 1800s, I 

found in 1871 not the two that can be seen 

today by the side of Wanstead Church 

School, but seven. Intrigued by this, I 

decided to find out what happened to the 

remaining five. 

If you go back to the Ordnance Survey maps 

of the 1860s, you can indeed see seven small 

cottages in a row from the High Street, and 

the 1871 census lists them as 1–7, 1 being on 

the High Street and the remainder in a terrace 

behind it. Presumably, like 6 High Street does 

today, their front door would have faced 

north towards the school. Occupations of 

those listed in the 1871 census included a 

grocer (at number 1), laundresses, gardeners 

and labourers. This was clearly housing for 

the working classes, unlike the Georgian 

townhouses on the other side of the road, 

occupied by those of professions such as 

solicitors and physicians. 

But then, by 1874, a man called John 

Maughfling had appeared on the Wanstead 

scene with a butchers shop on the High Street. 

Like some other successful traders in the area, 

he decided to enter the business of property 

development. 

In 1880, Maughfling had two houses in 

Wanstead Place built – these are now 43–45. 

In 1888, he built three shops on the corner 

of the High Street, numbers 10–14, but then 

known as Rose Terrace. And then in 1893, 

another house in Wanstead Place, number 

47, was built, in which Maughfling lived 

until his death in 1900 and his widow until 

around 1920. 

But what have houses in Wanstead Place got 

to do with the seven Wanstead Cottages? Well, 

the gardens at the back of these houses were 

planned to extend right up to the boundary 

with the school. This meant that some of 

the cottages would have to be demolished. 

By the time of the 1891 census, there are 

only 1–6 Wanstead Cottages, and later in the 

decade, the 1893–4 Ordnance Survey map 

shows only the two that remain today. 

I assume Maughfling bought the entire corner 

plot of land between the school boundary 

and Wanstead Place on the corner of the High 

Street. Unless they were simply demolished 

for being unfit for habitation, then a new 

owner wanting the land for his own use 

can be the only explanation as to why they 

disappeared off the map. 

When you next pass the restored cottages, 

spare a thought for the other five that were 

occupied by some of the area’s working 

classes, until John Maughfling came to 

Wanstead.

Why can’t you see me? 

Wanstead teenager Grace Wolstenholme invites you to watch her YouTube 

channel for an insight into her life with cerebral palsy. In the first of a 

series of articles, the aspiring actor talks about wheelchairs and boys 

Hi, my name is Grace Wolstenholme, 

I’m 17 years old and I live in Wanstead 

with my mum, and I can’t leave out 

my adorable assistant dog Scooby. 

I’ve got cerebral palsy, a brain condition 

that affects my movement and voice. Some 

people with cerebral palsy can have added 

disabilities, such as a learning difficulty, but in 

my case, it does not affect my understanding. 

Some people don’t always appreciate that 

I’m not mentally disabled, so to help people 

learn more about cerebral palsy, I’ve set up 

an informative YouTube channel to try and 

spread awareness about the condition. 

I posted a message on social media saying I 

was thinking of doing a Q&A, inviting people 

to ask me about living with cerebral palsy. 

From that, I had about 17 questions, which I 

thought was quite good considering I don’t 

really have that many followers! 

Another video I filmed is called What dating is 

like with cerebral palsy. Because I want people 

to see me as a ‘normal’ teenage girl, I wore my 

grey dress (the one in the photo here), made 

up my bed and sat on that, and spoke about 

what dating is like for me. I explain why dating 

with cerebral palsy isn’t easy at all because I 

feel that boys just see a wheelchair, no matter 

what I wear. If a boy saw an able-bodied girl 

wearing a skimpy dress, they’d be drooling all 

over her, but if they saw a girl in a wheelchair, 

they probably wouldn’t look twice because 

they think a girl in a wheelchair isn’t capable 

of doing stuff an able-bodied girl could do. 

They probably think I don’t understand. 

You tell me. Do you think a girl who doesn’t 

understand would wear a fitted dress and a 

full face of make-up? No, they wouldn’t, or is 

it you think I’m not ‘able enough’ to do stuff? 

Well, let me tell you, I can walk, I can talk, I can 

understand and I’ve also got hypermobility, so 

you know what that means! 

But boys would rather go out with a girl who 

can walk in high heels. Don’t get me wrong, I 

wear high heels, but there’s only one problem. 

I won’t get far walking in them! But a boy 

would rather be seen with a girl who can walk 

in high heels than be seen with a girl in a 

wheelchair wearing high heels. Tell me, what 

is the difference between using wheels to get 

around rather than legs? Not a lot! 

In February, I performed a monologue I wrote 

about my life called Why can’t you see me, 

which got some fantastic reviews from the 

press, and you can watch this on my YouTube 

channel as well. 

Even though I’m in a wheelchair, it doesn’t 

mean I’m not a normal teenage girl, 

because I am! I just use a wheelchair to get 

from A to B.

a gift to charity 

As we settle into the ‘new normal’, Wanstead resident and lockdown 

hero Frank Charles reflects on how the pandemic has affected his 

charities, the Frank Charles Give a Gift Appeal and Feed the Streetz 

Prior to lockdown, the Frank Charles 

Give a Gift Appeal sourced and 

delivered presents to children in 

hospital over the festive period, gifted 

presents and experiences to children 

with life-threatening and life-limiting 

illnesses and their siblings throughout 

the year, took families living in poverty 

to the seaside every summer and hosted 

Christmas parties to families on low 

incomes. The restraints of lockdown and 

social distancing have severely curtailed 

our activities on this side of the charity, 

although we are planning a much-reduced 

seaside experience later in August. 

From the beginning of March, when the 

severity of the pandemic became apparent 

and more and more charities stopped taking 

food to rough sleepers, the other branch of 

my charity, Feed the Streetz, increased the 

frequency of deliveries of breakfast bags and 

personal hygiene bags in both Stratford and 

Ilford. We continued this for a few weeks until 

the homeless were given temporary housing. 

During lockdown, I also set up a foodbank, 

which I run from home delivering weekly bags 

of essentials to families all over east London. 

Some are referred by other foodbanks, some 

by social services, others by word of mouth. 

Because of the risk to the service users from 

public transport, I am delivering all the bags 

myself at the moment, but am keen to find 

premises somewhere in the local area from 

where I can operate, with clients coming to 

pick up food themselves. 

For the first couple of months of lockdown, 

I took ready-made meals, cakes, fresh fruit 

and hand cream to the NHS staff at Whipps 

Cross Hospital daily, although, as the crisis 

has lessened, this has now been reduced 

to once a week. We have also taken food 

to fire, police and ambulance stations and 

care homes across east London, and have 

sourced, made up and supplied face shields 

to local GP surgeries, Whipps Cross Hospital, 

Newham General Hospital, care home staff 

and pharmacies in Wanstead. 

With the closure of charity shops during 

lockdown, Feed the Streetz has also offered 

furniture, iPads, TVs, clothing and shoes to 

families in need. To witness the joy on a child’s 

face when they can access their school work 

on their own iPad is extremely rewarding. 

I’d also like to highlight the work of children 

who have shown initiative and community 

spirit by holding fundraising events for us. In 

June, a group of children in Oak Hall Road held 

a cake and toy sale, raising £205. And two keen 

dancers from Palmers Green raised £80 for our 

charity by putting on a dance performance 

every Thursday evening for three weeks.

Gardeners have a 

name. We gave this traffic 

island between The George 

and the station the fanciful name of 

the Cherry Pye Bed when we took over the 

wider end some four years ago. 

It’s a puzzling name for those not familiar 

with the quirkeries of Wanstead history. The 

reference is to a plaque on the wall of The 

George facing the station. The plaque dates 

from the previous 18th-century pub, the old 

George and Dragon. The wording is as follows 

and should rhyme: 

In Memory of

As cost half a Guiney 

Ye 17 of July 

That day we had good cheer 

I hope to do so maney a Year.

The meaning of this is lost in the 

mists of time. A cherry pie would not have 

cost half a guinea: 10 shillings and sixpence, 

or just over 50 pence in today’s money. A 

considerable sum in 1752. Could this have 

been something to do with a bet? And 

who were RC and D Jerry? Evidently, a 

good time was had by all. 

Since the first flowers – Californian 

desert bluebells appeared in June – we 

have been treated to a procession. Some of 

them not recognised, but favourites include 

scarlet flax, Californian poppy, cornflower 

and English marigolds. We wait with interest 

to see what comes next. This patch has 

proved popular with everyone, including the 

passing drivers. Some even hope for a red 

traffic light so they can sit and look at the 

flowers! 

This sort of project is not maintenance-free, 

especially on a patch neglected for years. We 

are constantly weeding to try and give the 

new plants less competition. Next year, 

we intend something different and will 

be laying turf with a perennial mix 

of wild flowers. A lot of hard work 

initially, but the turf should establish 

easily and its use will reduce 

maintenance. Obviously, this project 

is not finished and we are learning as 

we go along. Like the words of the 1752 

plaque, we hope our patch of flowers will 

give good cheer for many a year. Cherry pies 

for the workers always welcome! 

Definitely a ‘watch this space’ situation.

ZOOM, NATURALLY 

When lockdown was announced, the Wren Wildlife and Conservation 

Group had to come up with alternatives to replace their spring and 

summer plans. Enter Zoom. Tim Harris reports 

When lockdown was announced, 

some Wren members concentrated 

on what they could do from the 

comfort of their own homes to contribute 

to the group. And with necessity being 

the mother of invention, some of these 

initiatives have been very successful. 

Carrying this to extremes, ‘noc-migging’ 

involves recording the calls of birds migrating 

overhead at night. Using a recording device 

in a bucket, this is the very antithesis of 

exercise, best done while asleep! Chief among 

the surprises it produced were the calls of 

common scoters – ducks usually found far out 

at sea – in early April. Thanks in the main to 

noc-migging, these wildfowl are now known 

to fly overland on their way north in spring. 

This really is citizen science in action. 

Several of us switched on bright lights in 

our gardens to attract moths. Our area has a 

phenomenal range of these nocturnal insects, 

mainly because of the area’s floristic diversity. 

This year has been the best on record, with 

more than 250 different kinds noted so far, 

several never previously recorded. And only a 

couple of them eat clothes! 

Many local naturalists also took full advantage 

of the opportunity to exercise outdoors 

to spot interesting plants, bees, birds and 

butterflies in our diverse range of green 

spaces. Among many fascinating discoveries 

was a small patch of fiddleneck (Amsinckia 

menziesii) behind the Esso garage on 

Aldersbrook Road. This ‘weed’, native to North 

America, was found by Rose Stephens and 

has not previously been seen locally. We’ll 

probably never know how it got there. 

But the big problem we faced as a group was 

how to reach out to people who would, in 

more normal times, come on our local walks. 

Enter Zoom, and committee member Tony 

Madgwick, who offered to host a series of 

weekly ‘virtual field meetings’. These have 

been enormously successful, attracting 

audiences from far and wide to listen, learn, 

and discuss. While most participants have 

been local, we’ve had naturalists tuning in 

from as far afield as Devon and Scotland. 

Some meet-ups have drawn more than 100 

people, keen to find out more about a range 

of topics, ranging from the best bee-friendly 

plants for their gardens, which butterflies and 

dragonflies to look for in Wanstead Park, how 

to identify birds by their songs, and the life 

history of native reptiles. So successful have 

these online meetings been that we intend to 

continue them.

Remembering Peter 

Essex Art Club is sorry to announce the death of Wanstead resident 

Peter Luscombe, whose training as an architect led to a lifelong hobby. 

Chair of Essex Art Club Mary Springham reports 

Peter Luscombe was an accomplished 

painter and a long-term committee 

member of Essex Art Club and of 

many other art organisations. He took on 

responsible roles for most of the societies 

to which he belonged. 

During lockdown, Peter had been circulating 

images of some of his old paintings to a large 

circle of colleagues, and we put some of 

them up on the Essex Art Club website. It was 

typical of Peter to do something informal, fun 

and interesting. 

He worked primarily in watercolour, but in 

recent years, had used acrylic paint with 

spectacular results. He was also a talented 

portrait artist. 

Peter successfully ran our Sunday painting 

group at St Barnabas Church hall for more 

than 10 years, and we will restart this as 

soon as we are able to do so since it is a very 

important activity for club members and 

visitors. 

Peter originally trained as an architect and 

worked mainly in the City of London. “I was 

articled to an architect for three years when 

I was 16, which was a sort of apprenticeship. 

This method of training has long since been 

superseded by full-time courses in colleges 

and universities… Throughout my career, 

I produced illustrations both for my own 

designs and also for the various practices for 

which I worked. However, my interest in art 

has not been confined to work. It has been a 

hobby throughout my life,” explained Peter in 

a Wanstead Village Directory article in 2017. 

He was a member of the Company of 

Chartered Architects (he was also a founder 

member), the Society of Maritime Artists, the 

Fine Arts Society of Painter Stainers Livery 

company, Chair of the City Heritage Society 

and a member of the Conservation Area 

Advisory committee in the City. He was also a 

devoted member of St Barnabas Church. 

Essex Art Club has made a donation to the 

British Heart Foundation in his memory. 

Peter died suddenly in June 2020. He will be 

sadly missed by all who knew him.

BREATH OF FRESH AIR 

Cities around the world are starting to prioritise the needs of people 

over cars. Let’s seize the moment to do something in Wanstead too, say 

Wanstead Climate Action members Kathy Taylor and Susannah Knox 

Air pollution is an invisible enemy – 

killing 9,000 Londoners prematurely 

every year. The brief drop in traffic 

levels during the coronavirus lockdown 

gave us a glimpse of what life could be like 

with less congestion and cleaner air. 

So, we’ve come up with some quick and 

simple ways you can help put pressure on 

Redbridge Council and the government to get 

their act together and deal with the problem 

of air pollution. Imagine Wanstead less choked 

up with traffic. It could be a breath of fresh air. 

The London Assembly says the capital’s toxic 

air is a public health crisis. Exposure to air 

pollution stunts the growth of children’s lungs 

and increases the chance of lung cancer, 

heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. 

Now, evidence is mounting that it is linked to 

increased COVID-19 infections and death rates, 

according to the World Health Organization. 

The main cause of air pollution in London 

is traffic. The quieter streets, cleaner air and 

lower noise levels that lockdown brought 

were welcomed across Wanstead. And many 

cities, including areas of London, have recently 

and quickly made expanded cycleways or 

traffic-free streets to make cycling safer 

and reduce crowding on pavements and 

public transport. But so far, sadly, not in 

Redbridge. Cycling is a way to travel with a 

lower risk of coronavirus infection than public 

transport. However, understandably, many 

people are put off getting on their bike due 

to the lack of safe cycleways. The danger 

is people will start to drive more to avoid 

infection, worsening air quality and putting 

health at risk in other ways. 

In Redbridge, cycling provision is far poorer 

than in other boroughs, and safe cycleways 

are few and far between. There is a noticeable 

deterioration in safe cycling options when 

cycling from Waltham Forest to Redbridge, 

for example. 

While Redbridge Council has shown 

intention to improve matters and is currently 

undertaking a consultation, the more 

pressure that is exerted on them, the higher 

safe cycling will move up the agenda. Many 

schemes can be done at low cost. Others will 

require major funding. However, the health of 

all of us, especially our children, is at stake.

ALONE IN LOCKDOWN 

Councillor Daniel Morgan-Thomas (Wanstead Village, Labour) looks back 

on his time in lockdown alone and highlights the importance of 

continuing to look after each other as ‘normality’ returns 

you OK?” This was what I heard 

the most when lockdown began. 

“Are 

I found myself unexpectedly 

living alone and no one could say how 

long restrictions would last. Like many 

people, I was used to going out and about 

locally when I wasn’t at work or in council 

meetings, so being both on my own and at 

home full time came as a bit of a shock! 

I have, however, been lucky: having some 

lovely neighbours I could see from a safe 

distance without travelling and with the 

forest on my doorstep for my daily permitted 

exercise. I was also struck by how helpful local 

shops were in response to the pandemic – on 

my own, I didn’t need big supermarkets but 

when needed, I made use of the small shops 

in Wanstead and South Woodford, especially 

those I could visit early in the morning before 

starting work. Fortunately, these remained 

well stocked, even when eggs and flour were 

scarce elsewhere, meaning I could indulge in 

my new-found lockdown hobby of baking. 

It was fantastic to be able to contribute to 

the Corner House Project’s efforts to provide 

baked goods for our brilliant NHS workers. 

Being on my own, I’ve had to work quite 

hard to create boundaries: keeping my 

day job to my desk and using set times for 

virtual council meetings and keeping up 

with correspondence and phone calls while 

keeping leisure time separate – even if that 

just meant going to the sofa to watch TV! It’s 

been good to be busy though. I have many 

friends who have been on furlough for some 

months now, as approximately a third of 

workers in Redbridge have been. 

I’ve also been fortunate to keep in touch with 

friends and family across the UK and abroad, 

many of whom have found more time to talk 

since lockdown. Whether by Zoom, text, email 

or even postcard, this kind of contact has 

been hugely important for my mental health 

and wellbeing. Sadly, from both my work in 

children’s mental health and being on the 

Council’s Health Scrutiny Committee, I know 

that for many, whether on their own or in 

other difficult living arrangements, lockdown 

has been extremely difficult. Support, 

however, is always there, whether you need 

practical help or just someone to speak to on 

the phone. 

As lockdown begins to lift and a glimmer 

of ‘normality’ slowly returns to our local 

community, I hope we can continue to look 

after each other and support the brilliant 

initiatives like the Tin in a Bin Network and 

mutual aid groups. Some people feel less 

comfortable and the return to ‘normality’ for 

them will take longer – I’m sure the Wanstead 

community will continue to support them.

The forests are burning. As global 

temperatures march upwards and 

humans seek more land for cattle and 

crops, woodland is going up in smoke from 

the north to the south. 

The 2019/2020 bushfire season in Australia 

was unusually intense with an estimated 

18.6 million hectares destroyed, and this June, 

Russia’s forest fire agency reported some 

one million hectares were actively burning 

in remote areas of Siberia inaccessible by 

firefighters. 

Deforestation isn’t just being caused by 

global warming. In the last 30 years, it is 

estimated 420 million hectares of forest 

have been lost through conversion 

to other land uses. Large-scale 

commercial agriculture (primarily 

cattle ranching and cultivation of 

soya bean and oil palm) accounted 

for 40% of tropical deforestation 

between 2000 and 2010. 

What about closer to home? The UK 

is one of the least forested places 

in Europe. In England, just 10% of 

land is wooded. Compare this to 

the European Union, where 42% 

of the total land area is forest. 

Despite the importance 

of trees for combatting 

climate change, supporting 

biodiversity and improving 

health and wellbeing, 

data from 2016 suggests 

that the UK has been in a 

period of deforestation. 

The government has 

committed to more 

tree planting, but in the 

year to March 2019, just 

1,420 hectares were planted – the 

target was 5,000. Against that, 

trees are being cut down for land 

development. HS2 alone has put 108 

ancient woods in England at risk of 


loss or damage. Young trees are being planted 

to ‘compensate’ but it isn’t straightforward 

– thousands died in last summer’s recordbreaking 

heat. 

But before we throw up our hands in disgust, 

maybe we should look at our own backyards. 

I regularly walk past the van of a local tree 

surgeon and I can tell you that deforestation 

is alive and well here in Wanstead too. That’s 

why I was so pleased to see an article by top 

UK gardener Joe Swift encouraging people to 

have a tree in their garden. Here are his top 

picks for small or medium-sized plots. All have 

a small root spread – he says they’re safe to 

plant 3m or more from your house. 

• Crab apple Malus ‘John Downie’ 

• White Himalayan birch (Betula utilis 

jacquemontii) 

• Judas tree (Cercis silquastrum) 

• Ornamental hawthorn (Crataegus persimilis)

And if the sheer beauty of trees and their 

major role in removing carbon from the 

air isn’t enough for you, then consider that 

maybe, just maybe, money can grow on trees. 

There’s no data for the UK, but research in the 

States found that a tree in the front garden 

added the equivalent of nearly £6,000 to the 

value of the house, and if that tree was part of 

nice landscaping, it could increase the value of 

the home by up to 11%.

headline-grabbing announcements made by the Chancellor of the 

Exchequer last month 

Many readers will have seen the 

headline-grabbing announcements 

made by the Chancellor of the 

Exchequer Rishi Sunak last month. The 

announcement that has been welcomed by 

so many is the stamp duty land tax holiday. 

Statistics show property transactions have 

significantly reduced and prices have either 

flattened or fallen over the last few months. It 

is hoped that by underpinning the property 

market, this will help the economy as a whole. 

There are very few options available to the 

government of how to kick-start the property 

market, and the main tool available to them is 

stamp duty land tax. 

The government has decided that reduced 

rates of stamp duty will apply for residential 

properties until 31 March 2021. If you purchase 

a residential property between now and 

then, you will only pay stamp duty on the 

property price above £500,000. This applies to 

both first-time buyers and existing property 

owners who are selling their existing home 

and buying a new one. So, if you are buying 

for more than £500,000, and up to £925,000, 

you will pay 5% on the portion over £500,000. 

For example, if you are buying for £550,000, 

you will pay £2,500 stamp duty. Multiple 

dwelling owners are still required to pay the 

additional 3% surcharge on the whole value of 

the property. 

For more expensive homes, the stamp duty 

land tax rate on the portion of the property 

price from £925,001 to £1.5m is now 10%. And 

the portion above £1.5m is now charged 

at 12%. 

It is thought this will underpin the property 

market not just for first-time buyers but the 

market as a whole. Anything that prevents the 

property market from stagnating should be 

good for the economy. But there is a word of 

warning that multiple property owners and 

professional buy-to-let landlords may take full 

advantage of this, and that first-time buyers 

may risk losing out on attractively priced 

properties under £500,000. This in itself could 

mean prices are driven up too far for people to 

get onto the property ladder. So, our advice is 

get in quick.

We maintain a wide range of flood 

and coastal risk management 

(FCRM) assets which reduce the 

risk of flooding to people and property. 

These assets could include, but are not 

limited to, embankments, pumping 

stations and flood gates. 

The channel maintenance we currently have 

in our 2020/2021 programme for the River 

Roding in Redbridge is an annual check to be 

carried out in December 2020 to January 2021. 

This involves our field teams walking the river, 

cutting back any overhanging vegetation to 

just above bank height or to allow reasonable 

access to the channel. They also remove 

woody debris from the channel to reduce 

the risk of snagging and clear any blockages 

larger than a football. 

Due to coronavirus, the timing and nature 

of the maintenance works may change 

so we can adopt safe ways of working. 

In line with government advice, we are 

continuing to deliver all of our flood risk 

management projects where it is safe for 

our teams and delivery partners to do 

so. We are following the latest guidance 

from Public Health England regarding safe 

working. 

We will publish an updated programme 

every three months to show progress 

(visit wnstd.com/rodingprogress). You can 

view the programme as an interactive map 

to see what is going on near you. To use the

a feature to find information about the asset 

and planned work. 

Since our last article, we 

have received an indicative 

programme of works for the River 

Roding Project which outlines what 

will be carried out and when. 

Back in October 2018, we carried out ground 

investigation works at four locations in 

Woodford on existing flood embankments 

along the River Roding. After analysing 

the information obtained, we were able to 

determine that works are required at two of 

the four locations to ensure the defences are 

fit for purpose. To determine exactly what 

works are required, we will be doing further 

ground investigation works in August. 

We will also be conducting various surveys 

along the River Roding. These will include 

ecology surveys at both the flood storage 

area (FSA) site and Woodford defences and 

geophysical surveys, including trial trenching 

at the FSA site, which are proposed to be 

conducted between August and December 

2020. These surveys will inform what work 

needs to be undertaken and inform the 

planning application, which we aim to have 

granted by August 2021.

engagement events in March or 

April 2021 prior to the submission 

of our planning application.

opportunity to 

comment on the 

proposals. 

The Water Resources Act 1991 grants 

statutory powers to the Environment Agency 

to maintain main rivers for reduction of 

flood risk (sections 169 to 172), irrespective 

of channel ownership. These powers are 

discretionary and are exercised according 

to resources available and the flood risk 

pertaining in any locality. The legal duty to 

maintain a watercourse rests with the riparian 

owner (normally the owner of the land 

adjacent to the watercourse), irrespective of 

whether the Environment Agency chooses to 

undertake works.

What will Wanstead look like in a post-COVID-19 world? In the third 

of a series of articles, Chair of Wanstead Society Scott Wilding, who is 

exploring these issues as part of his job, offers his thoughts 

Dealing with the new normal of a post- 

COVID-19 world is still a challenge 

for all of us. The virus has not gone 

away; people are still dying from this 

disease. And we all find ourselves coping 

with the challenges of daily life in many 

different ways. 

As each month progresses, the lockdown 

which has dominated our lives begins to ease. 

Last month, we were able to get a haircut and 

go to the pub for the first time in months. The 

economy, and with it our lives, is beginning to 

open up again. 

This series of articles seeks to examine what 

life will likely be like in the ‘new normal’. 

Lockdown brought many challenges, but a 

huge one was home schooling. 

Some pupils never left during lockdown, while 

others did get some education just before 

the summer holidays. But all pupils will be 

required to attend school from next month. 

Lockdown shone a light for many parents 

on what it’s like to be teacher, but also the 

benefits of smaller class sizes and one-to-one 

teaching. 

Average class sizes in England are around 30 

pupils, but in lockdown that was halved – or 

even more so – for those who were able to 

attend school. The benefits of smaller classes 

have shown that pupils get more bespoke 

learning experiences and can do better as a 

result. 

Lessons that did take place were often held 

outside in a more informal environment 

with an emphasis on practical activities. 

This style of learning has shown both pupils 

and staff that a new way of learning – that 

takes pupils away from purely desk-based 

study – is not only possible but can improve 

the overall educational experience. The UK is 

one of very few countries that places such a 

high emphasis on desk-based learning, and 

perhaps this experiment in education has 

shown what else is on offer. 

The challenge for schools and the government 

will be to capture the positives. No one can 

suddenly double the number of class sizes, 

and teaching staff, by next month. And as we 

approach winter, outside lessons become less 

likely. 

But lockdown has at least shown what could 

be possible. And if we are to take some of the 

good bits from the last few months, and take 

time to pause and consider which parts of our 

‘old’ life we want back, has this not been an 

opportunity to rethink how we educate our 

children? Although, for most parents I know, 

they are looking forward to having their kids 

return to school in September, whichever way 

lessons are taught.

A thousand 

I 

fell into photography 

while training to teach 

English. It was in the 

classroom of an east London 

secondary school that I 

found photography to be an 

excellent tool for engaging 

with reluctant learners. 

My PGCE tutor referred me to 

a publishing editor who was 

looking for someone to retake 

photos for a book as the editor 

was not happy with what one 

professional had produced. 

I would do the shoot for a 

lesser fee, and if my work was up to scratch, I 

would be in for future commissions. I jumped 

in and the rest is history. 

After a few years of juggling teaching and 

photography, I decided to go freelance. 

My use of photography in teaching made 

me aware of the power of an image and its 

potential to communicate and play a part in 

making our world better. I have photographed 

for a number of mainstream publishers, 

including Pearson and Oxford University Press. 

With educational publishers, I often come up 

with a concept, and when it is approved, go 

on to work with a writer to take all the photos 

for the book. As most of these books are set 

abroad, I become a location scout, art director 

and photographer all rolled into one. 

With poet Benjamin Zephaniah, I have 

collaborated on three books for children, 

including We Are Britain. I have written and 

photographed six books about India; I is 

for India went on to become the American 

Bookseller Pick of the List. S is for South Africa, 

for which I worked with novelist Beverley 

Naidoo, was chosen as the best children’s 

book on Africa by the Smithsonian Institute. 

All these books are for young children, and I 

firmly believe that if children at an early stage 

read about other countries and cultures, it will 

make them more understanding and tolerant.

As for ‘concerned photography’, I have 

worked for Help Age International, Save the 

Children, New Internationalist, UNICEF and 

DFID, helping to raise awareness. Commercial 

clients have included Air India, American 

Express and Tata Steel. I have had solo and 

group shows at galleries including Salford 

Art Gallery, Camerawork, Mall Gallery and 

Photographers’ Gallery. My first show was at 

South Woodford Library, and later, I had two 

shows at Redbridge Museum in Ilford. 

For this article, I have chosen an image from 

the book S is for South Africa. I think, in many 

ways, it sums up post-apartheid South Africa 

and celebrates diversity. 

I like portraiture, especially when it is unposed 

and in available light. Street photography also 

fascinates me, allowing me to simply look 

and observe. I hope to spend more time now 

doing personal work in photography.

The Wanstead Society is a group of volunteers dedicated to protecting and enhancing one of the most 

picturesque parts of London. We champion the conservation of our area’s heritage, and work to promote 

Wanstead and neighbouring Snaresbrook wherever possible. 

The Wanstead Society is a non-political organisation seeking to help our area by building constructive 

working relationships with those in power. 

Our main aims are to: 

• Work with the Council and planners to protect and enhance the character of Wanstead 

Wanstead is a lovely 

neighbourhood – 

• Encourage, support and promote the viability of the High Street and the 

local community 

• Take part in the Wanstead Festival and care for the Corner House Garden 

• Liaise with and lobby Councillors, GLA Members and MPs 

• Support local businesses
