Notes from the Board
2020 HOA DUES
The 2020 dues were due January 1 st , delinquent February 1 st . If you need
more time to pay your dues, request a payment plan now before being
turned over to the attorney for collection and avoid paying much more.
Save yourself a lot of extra money and possible judgment and foreclosure.
Unlike many other subdivisions, there is no charge for a payment plan if
you enter into one before being turned over to the attorney’s office for
collection.
IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR INVOICE, PLEASE CONTACT SPECTRUM
ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT AT 281-343-9178.
ARE YOU SAVING THE MONEY YOU DESERVE ON YOUR PROPERTY TAXES?
While doing some research on our neighborhood recently, I noticed
that numerous Westfield Homeowners have not filed for Homestead
Exemption on their property to save money on property taxes. (You must
occupy the home to qualify for this exemption.)
A homestead exemption helps you save on taxes on your home. An
exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and
lowers your taxes. For example, if your home is valued at $100,000 and
you qualify for a $20,000 exemption, you pay taxes on a value of $80,000.
An Application for Residential Homestead Exemption (same form for
over-65, disability, over-55 surviving spouse or 100% disabled veteran
homestead exemptions) can be found by hovering over Forms Page at
www.hcad.org, choose popular forms, then choose form #11-13, which
is the 1 st form on the list. Homestead exemption, General Residential,
over 65, disability, over 55 surviving spouse. Follow the instructions on
the form.
To check your property to see if you have the homestead exemption, go
to hcad.org, hover over property search, then choose search by address
and fill in your address. (You will have better success if you do not use dr.
cir.pl. etc.) Look about halfway down on the left under Exemption Type,
this will show the type of exemption you have or none if you do not have
any exemptions. There are videos to watch for complete instructions
to fill out the homestead exemption form and the documents you will
need to send in with the application. You can contact the Harris County
Appraisal District at 713-957-7800 if you have any questions.
NUISANCE ABATEMENT
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has an overall Nuisance Abatement
program for neighborhoods. Empty homes with junk and clutter in the
front and back yards, eyesores for the community, inoperable vehicles,
health and safety hazards… these and much more are addressed under
Texas law as it applies to Nuisance Abatements in the Traffic Code and
the Health and Safety code. All Deputy Contract units are trained in every
Nuisance Abatement law on the books. Each law will be enforced quickly.
Once again, we are putting a burden on the Sheriff’s Office that rightfully
belongs on other agencies and the homeowners’ associations, but this is
the most expeditious way of solving the many problems we are seeing
i. So, if you know of a home that is abandoned, has a junk vehicle in the
driveway or street, trash, debris, high grass, a dangerous swimming pool,
etc., please contact the management company, Spectrum Association
Management, 281-343-9178, ask them to forward the information to
our deputy or the district nuisance abatement deputy who will act on
it immediately. This program began in 2011 following the training of all
deputies. New deputies who bid into contracts are trained in Nuisance
Abatement prior to their new assignment. The vehicle Nuisance
Abatement and parking code are enforced in an ongoing policy. The
health and safety laws will supplement that for further improvement in
our neighborhoods. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with
the Harris County Health Department and the County Attorney in an
effort to clean up these problems.
REPORT STREETLIGHT OUTAGES
Please report outages of streetlights to Centerpoint Energy. You will
need the pole number as well as the nearest street address and call 713-
207-2222 or go to their website and complete an online form. It is very
important that non-working lights are reported for the safety of our each
of us. We pay the exact same whether the light is working or not.
HOMEOWNER HOT LINE
There is help for your homeowners association!
The Greater Houston Chapter of the Community Associations Institute
(CAI) has launched a free HOA Hotline, a resource for homeowners and
Board members owning homes/units in condominium, townhome
and subdivision community associations and have questions about
the operations of their association. The Hotline is staffed with local
non-attorney experts knowledgeable in community association best
practices. Please contact the Hotline by calling 832-251-1874.
We urge homeowners to take advantage of this free resource. After all,
isn’t it better to resolve issues quickly and reasonably now before they
get out of hand later?
out legal advice. If seeking legal help, please contact the appropriate
attorney or legal service. LegalLine is a free legal service, open to any
NATIONAL DOG DAY - AUGUST 26 TH
This day encourages dog ownership of all breeds. Whether mixed or
purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and
abuse-free life. Dogs give us companionship; they keep us safe and they
aid those in need. It is a goal for many on this day to find homes for all
dogs in need of a loving family. The purpose of the National Dog Day
Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.
A dog is man’s best friend. When dogs find a forever home, their
companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy,
loyalty and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become
family.
Take your dog for a walk. If you do not have a dog, ask to take your
neighbor’s dog for a stroll or volunteer at a shelter.
25 CAMPGROUNDS WITHIN/AROUND
2 HOURS OF HOUSTON TX
It’s summertime and that means it’s time to get out the camping gear, fishing
poles and sun screen! There’s no better way to relax than to sit outside of the
tent you just set up and breathe in.
SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL PARK: NEW WAVERLY, TX
This gorgeous national park offers tent pads, picnic tables, parking spurs
for trailers, lantern posts, grills, potable water, and toilets. Hiking is very
popular in the spring when the climate is milder. Water activities get
going in the summer on Double Lake with canoes and paddleboats that
can be rented from the park. Deer is the most popular game animal in the
Sam Houston National Forest, with squirrels second. Quail and dove are
found around newly regenerated timberland. For the water sportsman,
fishing and duck hunting can be enjoyed on area lakes and streams.
BRAZOS BEND: NEEDVILLE, TX
This park has got plenty of options for activities during your stay. Lots
of trails, some of which are even wheelchair friendly, wind through the
woods and bring you to the water’s edge of the lake. Just make sure you’ve
brushed up on your alligator safety because they’re not uncommon in
certain areas of the park. Aside from walking or biking the trails, there’s
also the option of horseback riding on one of the multiuse trails.
LAKE CONROE KOA: MONTGOMERY, TX
Here’s a KOA that’s got your back this weekend if you’re trying to relax
to the max. Bring your RV here, up to 80’ and enjoy the cable tv, wifi,
hookups and pools to lounge in all day. If you haven’t got an RV, don’t
feel left out! You can stay in one of the 35 cabins that have bathrooms and
a full kitchen. Tent campers are welcome as well. Visitors can explore the
area and find the nearby golf course, restaurants and the lake has plenty
of recreational activities.
GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK: GALVESTON, TX
This park is a freaking island, so as far as camping goes you really can’t
go wrong with this option. There is hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching
and lots more. One of the many things that make this island campground
unique is the paddle trails they boast. Though, if you decide to go on these,
you’ll need to bring your own canoe or kayak because they don’t rent them
out. Outside the campground, there is an educational theme park called
Moody Gardens. Bring the kids along and there’ll be plenty of nature for
people of various interests to enjoy and participate in during the stay.
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE PARK: SAN FELIPE, TX
This lovely State Park has six miles of hiking trails that are open to bikers
as well. Campsites have full hookups and some sites even hold up to 60
people. Stephen F. Austin State Park also holds events for youth over the
HUNTSVILLE STATE PARK: HUNTSVILLE, TX
Here’s a State Park full of relaxation. You can go and unwind in the shade
of the trees and go fishing from one of the fishing piers or off your boat
or canoe. There are watercraft for rent including paddleboats, canoes and
SEA RIM STATE PARK: SABINE PASS, TX
This park has 4,000 acres of marsh and a boardwalk going through so you
can enjoy without getting your feet wet. Campers, cabin-dwellers and
RV-goers all have a place here at Sea Rim State Park. Feel free to fish from
the boardwalk or explore with your rented or own canoe or kayak. Sea
Rim also has the option to explore its grounds from home via their virtual
tour of the trails map.
NORTHLAKE RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX
Come to Northlake RV Resort if you’re looking for a nice and relaxing place
to kick your feet up and breathe deeply. This resort has got a massive list of
amenities so it’s ridiculous to try to write them all here, but if you’re interested
you should definitely check out their website. Some of the best aspects of
this resort are the park-wide wifi, the stocked fishing lakes and the fire pits.
This place allows for extended stays and weekend trips, so regardless of your
plans you’ll definitely have plenty of options right next to home!
TRADERS VILLAGE RV RESORT:
Traders Village is a short drive for you and a wonderful place to stay. The
electric and water hookups are free, there is a pool for swimming, and
there’s wifi. Bring your picnic supplies so you can eat outside at the picnic
tables while enjoying the weather. You’re welcome to lounge around
and enjoy relaxing or you can go next door to the flea market that hosts
events and activities for visitors.
ALLSTAR RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX
At AllStar RV Resort, they’ve got anything you could need while camping
in your RV and more. If you’ve got yourself a Fido who wanders himself
into a smelly situation, there’s a dog washing station here for your (and
your nose’s) convenience. Take advantage of the swimming pool, the
computer room, the recreation room and more. There’s also a stadium
nearby for baseball fans to watch their games.
ESCAPE THE PAVEMENT: HOUSTON, TX
There are actually two camping sites associated with Escape the Pavement
near Houston. There are four aspects to Escape the Pavement: Heyne
Ranch, Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Blackwood Land Institute and Big
Thicket National Preserve. It’s actually super great, because no matter
your flavor preference of outdoors experience, this place has got you. One
is a ranch for you and your horse to enjoy pastures, rivers and wooded
trails; perfect for a day trip. You’ll also love the bonfires on the beach! One
of their campgrounds has over 4,000 acres of forest and a creek that you
can go ahead and explore the trails winding around through it on your
horse, bike or on foot. The other area available for camping is restricted to
primitive camping only because it is located on a preserve. Lastly, the land
institute is a great educational place for kids and adults alike. Check out
their website if any of these interest you and start planning a trip!
LAKE SOMERVILLE: SOMERVILLE, TX
The campground and park are also full of opportunities for fun in the sun.
Water activities like swimming, skiing, fishing, and the likes are all great
ideas on Lake Somerville. There are picnic areas for campers or day hikers
to sit, enjoy the view, and munch on their sandwiches. Birdwatching,
volleyball, hiking and horseback riding are popular pass times. Overall,
this is a wonderful place to relax and play in the great outdoors.
SHELDON LAKE STATE PARK: HOUSTON, TX
Sheldon Lake State Park is open to fishing and wildlife observation. You’re
welcome to take your boat out for a ride or fish off the banks, so long as
you’re wary of the alligators inhabiting the park. The learning center has
tons of activities for the kids that you can sign up for and enjoy. Some
of these activities are more hands-on, like catch and release fishing
and some are visual demonstrations like green building technologies
or smart wildscape demonstrations for gardening and using beautiful
native plants.
BASTROP STATE PARK: BASTROP, TX
A forest with a history and personality, the Lost Pines located on Bastrop
State Park used to be a luscious and well-groomed forest before being
damaged by floods and fires. Now, the forest’s recovery is just as beautiful
a sight. The story itself is a perfect reason to visit, but Bastrop also has
swimming, biking, hiking and geocaching as an incentive. If you’re
looking to exploring the surrounding area, Bastrop also has museums
and restaurants to check out on your vacation!
BUESCHER STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX
Experienced bicyclists looking for a challenge will enjoy the bike trails
here at Buescher State Park. This park connects with Bastrop State Park via
a paved road with great views of the area. Unfortunately, there is currently
no swimming in this park, but if you adventure the short commute to the
nearby Bastrop you’ll find a nice swimming pool for visitors like yourself.
Lastly, if you’re hankering to float along in a tandem kayak or a canoe, you
can do so through rental at Buescher State Park.
LOCKHART STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX
This park has a pool, grounds for camping, trails to hike and a nine-hole
golf course among many other things that allow you to get active! If you
want to go fishing but don’t want to lug around your equipment, you’re
in luck! The park has fishing equipment available for guests to use during
their stay. If you’re looking to have a gathering of people for a family or
church event, there is a Group Recreation Hall that also has a kitchen
capable of holding up to 75 people at once.
LAKE LIVINGSTON: LIVINGSTON, TX
If you’re looking for a beautiful place to host a family reunion, try looking
here! Campsites have full hookups and there are rentable screen shelters
as well. As long as you’re wary of the alligators that dwell in the area,
visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, birding, swimming, and biking. On
your way in and out you can stop at the souvenir shop that sells treats
and equipment!
LAKE LIVINGSTON KOA: ONALASKA, KOA
Here’s a popular KOA that you’ll probably need to make a reservation for
ahead of time to ensure you get yourself a spot for the night. There is
a beautiful pool with lounge chairs for you to relax and sink into while
soaking in the sun. Your kids will enjoy the playground. If you love
enjoying the great outdoors and its many inhabitants, there is a local bald
eagle named Eddie who supposedly flies around the area frequently.
There is also fishing, a pavilion to admire the scenery in, and is known for
the sunset views.
VILLAGE CREEK STATE PARK: LUMBERTON, TX
Campers interested in sleeping in tents, RVs or cabins are welcome here.
You’ll be able to go swimming, fishing, biking, hiking and more with your
friends and family. If you prefer to learn about your surroundings and its
history rather than being emerged in the real deal, there are programs
and museums aplenty for you to observe and glean information from
during your stay.
PALMETTO STATE PARK: GONZALES, TX
This little oasis has a multitude of thirsty plants that cannot live in other
areas due to the lack of water. The park is named for the dwarf palmettos
that grow beneath the trees. As a visitor, you can also enjoy the copious
amounts of flowing and stagnant water by swimming, tubing, fishing
and canoeing. Those interested in keeping dry will enjoy bird watching,
hiking, geocaching or staring at the dwarf palmettos.
VICTORIA COLETO CREEK LAKE KOA: VICTORIA, TX
Come to this RV and tent camping site to enjoy the lovely wildflowers,
scattered oaks, birds and other wildlife. There is a pond with catfish that you
can relax on the edge of while fishing and other areas for freshwater fishing.
The winters are not as frigid as up north, so you can always count on decent
weather should you decide to vacation here! There are plenty of places in the
area for you to check out, making it perfect for both short or extended stays.
Garden Tips For August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood.
Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron
cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around
the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/
or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new
generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly.
If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look
like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease
environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material,
mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments
like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a
favorable environment.
Chocolate Raspberry Cloud
You could make this on National Raspberries N’ Cream Day August 7th!
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup raspberry syrup
1 (9 ounce) package thin chocolate wafers
1/4 cup fresh raspberries (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves (optional)
1/8 cup semisweet chocolate curls (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
To Make Crust: In a small bowl, mix together crushed cookies and melted butter. Press
mixture into a 9 inch pie pan using your hands or the back of a spoon. Refrigerate until
firm.
To Make Filling: Whip 2 cups of cream until soft peaks form. Continue to whip while slowly
adding sugar, followed by vanilla extract. Whip until stiff, then stir in 1/2 cup raspberry
syrup.
Spread a layer of whipped cream mixture 1/2 inch deep into bottom of pie crust. Cover
with a layer of chocolate cookies. Cover with another 1/2 inch layer of whipped cream
mixture, followed by more cookies. If desired, slightly overlap the cookies, dipping them
in whipped cream mixture before placing them in pan. Continue alternating layers until
cookies are gone, and finish with a layer of whipped cream mixture. Cover carefully.
Refrigerate at least 12 hours before serving. Pie will keep up to 3 days.
Just prior to serving, whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and cover pie with a fresh layer. If
desired, garnish with fresh raspberries, mint leaves and chocolate curls.
