ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS MEETING RESULTS
Westgate’s Annual HomeOwners’ Meeting was Tuesday, June 23 rd at
6:30 PM in the Weekley Center. The agenda was on the proxy, which we
mailed out again. Thank you to the 90+ homeowners who turned in their
proxies and allowed us to conduct business. Zorik Petrosian was elected
by acclamation, replacing Abel Gonzalez. Thank you to Abel for his years
of valuable service!
We are looking into conducting HOA Board meetings using Zoom. We
weren’t legally allowed to do that with the annual meeting. Keep an eye
on our website for notice, www.westgatetx.net.
POOL NOTICE
The Westgate pool was closed effective June 29, 2020. The pool closure
was a decision made by the Board along with the pool company due to
the current Harris County COVID-19 threat level 1 (red), which means it’s
severe and you should stay home. The Board will reassess when the Harris
County COVID-19 threat level moves into Level 2 (orange).
These are the four levels of the COVID-19 threat system for Harris County:
Level 1 - Severe (red) Stay Home
Level 2 - Significant (orange) Minimize All Contacts
Level 3 - Moderate (yellow) Stay Vigilant
Level 4 - Minimal (green) Resume Normal Contacts
ANNUAL HOA FEES DUE
The Board was able to avoid raising dues for 2020 and the annual
statement has been mailed to all homeowners. The dues should be paid
in January. If you anticipate not being able to pay your Westgate fees for
2020 on time, be sure to call Inframark (281-870-0585) to discuss getting
on a payment plan before more fees are tacked on-from the attorney,
etc. $635 can turn into $1000+ very quickly. Even if you don’t think
you can pay all at once, you need to call Inframark to make payment
arrangements; DON’T WAIT and cost yourself MORE money.
These dues help pay for landscaping, electricity, water, refurbishing and
adding amenities and pool management, among other things. It helps
Westgate continue to be a great community with stable or increasing
property values. If you’d ever like details of how your dues are spent,
you can always ask our management company. Also, go to our annual
meeting and you will receive a copy of the financials.
YOUR CURB APPEAL CHECKLIST
The curb appeal of our community depends on each resident maintaining
his or her property as completely as possible. For those who keep their
homes and yards well-maintained, the association thanks you for your
efforts and good examples. We encourage all residents to pay particular
attention to the following maintenance items. This is Not a complete list.
1. Exterior paint. Paint is a quick and easy way to keep your property
looking fresh, new and clean. It will also protect against corrosion,
weathering and insects. ARC application is required if you are changing
the paint color from the original paint color.
2. Landscaping. Landscaping is extremely important to our community’s
curb appeal. Please treat/remove weeds and remove dead plants and
branches. Keep shrubs properly pruned and flowers well-tended. Keep
yards free of leaves and remove grass clippings. Remember, as the
weather warms up, your lawn will need to be mowed more often to
maintain community standards.
3. Roofs. Please insure your roofs are properly maintained and cleaned.
4. Driveways and sidewalks. Please remove stains, clean mildew, repair
cracks and fix other concrete problems. Remove weeds from sidewalk
joints and debris from driveways and sidewalks. Do not use driveways
for storage.
5. Gutters and downspouts. Please keep them cleaned out to prevent
overflowing and flooding. Repair any loose and or damaged gutters.
6. Exterior siding, windows and wood trim. Replace rotted or damaged
exterior trim. Clean mildew from exterior siding, brick and windows.
4
ARC application is required if you are changing the paint color from the
original paint color.
7. Trash Container. Store trash containers out of the public view.
8. Vehicles. All vehicles parked or stored in the community should be in
operable condition.
9. Fence. Repair damaged or rotted wood fence pickets as needed. NOTE:
Fence stain is NOT allowed. If your fence needs complete replacement,
please submit an ARC application prior to installing the new fence to
ensure the fence replacement will be approved.
ARC applications are available on the community website www.
westgatetx.net or via customercare@inframark.com. Thanks for keeping
our community looking sharp.
MODIFICATION APPLICATIONS
Whether first-time homeowners or long-time residents, we all have a
hefty investment in where we live. So it’s important to preserve the value
of our residences-as well as the surrounding common areas we all shareby
keeping buildings well-maintained and in a style that compliments
adjacent structures and landscaping. When our homes’ exteriors are in
good shape and the grass is cut, the hedges trimmed, the trash picked up
and the sidewalks and roads well-maintained, the community is attractive
to prospective buyers and renters and property values are preserved.
Our association’s Architectural Review Committee (ARC) review program
is a big part of sustaining the community’s appearance and property
values. While our ARC guidelines have some limitations, they allow
enough flexibility for individual expression. Please submit an ARC
application if you’re considering a project for your home that involves
painting, roofing, redesigning or installing trees, constructing a fence,
adding a secondary structure (like a garden shed, dog house, swing set
or garage); or installing solar panels or any other exterior modifications
to your home or exterior property.
Remember it is important to obtain approval for modifications prior to
beginning an exterior modification.
The ARC application can be found at www.westgatetx.net or you can
request an application at customercare@inframark.com.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR DEED RESTRICTIONS?
GARAGE SALES
In an effort to educate our residents, we are highlighting some deed
restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate:
In the Declaration of Covenants,…, Article VII, section B., pg. 11: “Garage
sales or yard sales…[are] prohibited. The Association may…provide for a
community wide garage sale.” Also, Texas state law considers garage sales
an “uncurable” violation that can incur an IMMEDIATE fine. Our fine policy
states that fine will be $50.
Please only have garage sales on community wide garage sales days. We
have one in the spring and one in the fall. Having them at any other time
may result in an immediate fine. Why? Unexpected traffic concerns and
parking congestion, as well as other kinds of disruptions, occur during
random garage sales in the neighborhood. Also, people leaving their
signs up after the sale is over increases the trash on the common areas.
Having a community wide garage sale enables people to have warning to
prepare for garage sales and limits the number of times they have to deal
with difficulties, but also allows homeowners to occasionally have sales
to clear out their clutter. It’s a compromise. Following these instructions
helps keep our neighborhood looking neat and thus keeps up our
property values. Home condition tends to be a contagious condition—
good or bad. Let’s be considerate of our neighbors!
COPIES OF ALL WESTGATE FOUNDING DOCUMENTS (including the
ARC form) can be downloaded from the Westgate website www.
2. The Westgate FACEBOOK page is Westgate’s official Social Media
Facebook, type this into your address bar: www.facebook.com/groups/
WestgateSubdivision/. Within a day or two, you will then be asked to
3. Send questions to the WESTGATE HOA EMAIL, Board@westgatetx.net.
and if you missed the newsletter.
HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INFORMATION
Westgate Subdivision falls within District 4 of the Harris County Sheriff’s
Department. Suspicious behavior should be called in to the Non-
Emergency number, general questions should be directed to the Patrol
District Office and emergencies should always call 911:
NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER: 713-221-6000 (Option 1 for dispatch)
PATROL DISTRICT OFFICE: 281-463-2648 (for general information only)
16715 Clay Road, Houston, TX 77084
EMERGENCY: 9-1-1 (emergencies only)
PROCEDURE WHEN FILING A REPORT
WITH THE SHERIFF’S DEPT.
If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether
after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure
to let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s
Dept. through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). That way,
the incident will be reported to our contract deputies, giving them
information on what to look for in our community. Also, be sure to report
the issue to our Crime Watch committee at crimewatch@westgatetx.net.
They discuss the problems with our deputies as well.
WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CALL THE NON-
EMERGENCY NUMBER
Please call the non-emergency number, 713-221-6000, when you see
suspicious activity. A couple of recent calls have resulted in getting a
couple felons off our streets.
When an incident happens - suspicious person or vehicle, someone rifles
through your car, etc - call the non-emergency number whether anything
was taken or not, whether damage was done or not. Our contract officer
spoke to some residents while he was responding to a call. They informed
him that they did share info on social media but didn’t call HCSO. HCSO is
not monitoring Social media.
HCSO put their non-contract officers where there are problems. No calls
= no problems. One call a week or so does not prompt a concern. But if
everyone who posted on social media called it in, it would be, then HCSO
would be justified in allocating more resources in our area to combat
crime: 713-221-6000.
STREETLIGHT OUTAGES
If you see a streetlight out, please report outages to CenterPoint Energy
at 713-207-2222 or 800-332-7143; also, at www.centerpointenergy.com.
You will need the pole number, the black and white numbers listed
vertically on the pole, to report the outage. This is something you can
do to help keep your community safe. Otherwise, it may take a while for
Centerpoint to notice it is out.
NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH
National Immunization Month is in August. It’s also the beginning of
back-to-school preparations and a good time to make sure your children
are properly vaccinated before they head back to school.
There is no one preventive health measure more important than
immunization. As the World Health Organization notes, the international
medical community has endorsed the use of vaccines and immunization
to prevent and control a number of infectious diseases, as well as chronic
diseases caused by “infectious agents.” Vaccinating your child can avoid
suffering and death associated with afflictions like diarrhea, measles,
pneumonia, polio and whooping cough.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says vaccines are 99% effective. Every
vaccine goes through a series of tests before being approved to ensure
safety. Vaccines are necessary to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Some diseases that many had thought eradicated have reappeared, as
polio did in Venezuela in 2018. Vaccines are studied intensively by the
FDA, the CDC and many other organizations that vigilantly in keep watch
over existing vaccines for possible complications.
Herd immunity is when a certain percent of immunized people in a
community reaches a level where everyone (including those who are
too young or too sick to be immunized) get some degree of protection.
It’s important that as many people as possible get immunized. It’s very
risky to the health of other children to rely on herd immunity to protect
your non-immunized child. By forgetting or opting to skip booster
vaccinations, you are undercutting the effectiveness of herd immunity
for both your own family and the community at large.
SUN SAFETY TIPS FOR CAMPERS
A few, easy sun protection measures can help all campers, counselors
and staff avoid any immediate or long-term effects of sun exposure.
• Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on all exposed skin, including
the lips, daily even on cloudy days; apply sunscreen about 20 minutes
before being exposed to the sun; reapply sunscreen frequently (at least
twice a day) and thoroughly.
• Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day. Schedule outdoor
activities before 10 AM and after 4 PM.
• Encourage everyone to wear a wide-brim hat.
• Try to wear clothes that protect your skin (ideally long-sleeve shirts and
long pants) and sunglasses.
• Practice the “shadow rule” - seek shade when your shadow is shorter
than you are tall.
• Speak out: talk to your family and friends about sun protection.
• Be especially careful if you have fair skin, freckles or numerous moles;
blond, red or light-brown hair; blue, green or gray eyes; a tendency to
burn easily and to tan little or not at all and a family history of skin cancer.
There is no quick cure for minor sunburn. But wet compresses, tub baths
and soothing lotions may provide some relief.
NATIONAL DOG DAY - AUGUST 26TH
This day encourages dog ownership of all breeds. Whether mixed or
purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and
abuse-free life. Dogs give us companionship; they keep us safe and they
aid those in need. It is a goal for many on this day to find homes for all
dogs in need of a loving family. The purpose of the National Dog Day
Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.
A dog is man’s best friend. When dogs find a forever home, their
companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy,
loyalty and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become
family.
CLASSES FOR 2020-2021 START
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH
The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the recommendation to modify
the 2020-2021 instructional calendar during a special-called meeting on
July 21.
The newly approved calendar pushes back the first day of instruction
to Tuesday, Sept. 8. The later start date allows the district more time
to monitor and evaluate the current health conditions in Harris County
related to COVID-19. Additionally, with the recent authorization of the
district to implement 1:1 technology for students, the delayed start date
will provide more time for the district to distribute Chromebooks and
internet devices to students with a demonstrated need.
Other changes include the modification of professional development
days for teachers and a return to duty of Friday, Aug. 14.
The last day of school is scheduled for June 3; however, weekdays from
June 7-30 are reserved as closure make-up days in case additional days
are needed as a result of COVID-19 or other natural disasters.
To download the 2020-2021 school calendar, visit the CFISD website at
www.cfisd.net/en/calendar/
BOARD APPROVES PURCHASE OF
CHROMEBOOKS, INTERNET ACCESS TO SUPPORT
1:1 TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION FOR ALL STUDENTS
The CFISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted in favor of authorizing
the superintendent to approve the purchase of portable electronic
devices for students, LTE internet access for students and other items
needed to support a one-to-one solution through the Department of
Information Resources (DIR) purchasing cooperative at an amount not to
exceed $44 million during a special-called meeting on July 7 th .
The purchase will support CFISD LTE 1:1 (Learning Together Everywhere),
which provides every student with an electronic device to support
quality instruction and resources. The program allows CFISD to meet
the needs of all students by providing appropriate teacher-directed
instruction, including real-time live virtual instruction as outlined in the
Texas Education Agency’s Strong Start 2020-21 plan.
“All of our students need quality instruction from their teachers,” said Dr.
Linda Macias, CFISD chief academic officer. “While nothing can replace
effective face-to-face instruction with a teacher, ensuring all students
have a Chromebook and internet access will allow them to receive
remote instruction that is teacher-directed and includes live virtual
instruction through the CFISD Connect platform. This will allow students
to be actively engaged in their learning while connecting with their
teachers and classmates.”
CFISD LTE 1:1 will function in two parts: Chromebooks featuring built-in
cameras, microphones and external protective cases; and internet access.
Devices will be managed through inventory systems, with accidental
damage protection and CFISD technicians will be available for repairs.
Safety layers will prevent unauthorized downloads, while a content filter
will be installed on all devices in compliance with the Children Internet
Protection Act. Each device also features a comprehensive reporting
and alerting system for Chromebooks, which facilitates locating and
recovering misplaced devices.
Internet access will be made available for students in households
indicating a need through mobile hotspots. In addition, CFISD is piloting
a program to broaden its reach by installing WiFi on buses.
The CFISD LTE 1:1 website (www.cfisd.net/lte) will provide parents and
students information on internet filtering, digital citizenship, device care,
technical support and additional online resources, including handbook
and guidelines for use, return process and reporting a device lost or
stolen.
Technology services team members will work collaboratively with school
leadership and the curriculum and instruction departments to distribute
devices to students and identify households in need of internet access.
“By providing a device for every student, we believe that the district is
taking a significant step to ensure that our students are positioned for
success,” said Karen Smith, CFISD chief financial officer. “The CFISD LTE 1:1
program ties Schoology and CFISD Connect together to complete a high
quality instructional program. This program positions our students to be
successful in all learning environments.”
The goal is to distribute devices prior to the first day of school (September
8 th ), though availability may ultimately determine the schedule for
distribution.
DR. KAYNE SMITH APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF THE
TEXAS ASSOCIATION FOR PUPIL TRANSPORTATION
Dr. Kayne Smith, CFISD director of transportation, was recently appointed
president of the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT) in
conjunction with the association’s 2020 virtual awards ceremony. Smith
will serve as TAPT’s 48th president and lead the executive committee for
the 2020-2021 term.
A TAPT executive committee member the past three years, Smith leads
one of the largest affiliate organizations to the National Association of
Pupil Transportation in helping facilitate networking and educational
opportunities. He served as parliamentarian for two years before serving
as president-elect for the 2019-2020 term. In addition, Smith has served
as the legislative committee chairperson since 2015.
“It was an honor to be elected as President of the Texas Association for
Pupil Transportation for 2020-2021,” Smith said. “I am excited to be able to
serve the countless school bus drivers, attendants, technicians, directors
and other staff members across the state whose purpose is to provide
a safe and healthy transportation service to the students of Texas. I am
deeply grateful for the support and encouragement from CFISD and my
team in transportation.”
The TAPT was formed in 1972 and held its first conference the next year.
A professional certification program was started in 1991 with class topics
including personnel management, student safety, operations, vehicle
maintenance and budgeting and reporting. In addition, TAPT offers
scholarship opportunities for students and adult members and contests
to promote safety of school bus transportation.
Smith returned to CFISD as the director of transportation in September 2018
after starting in 2014 as an area director at the Telge Transportation Center
and then as an assistant director of human resources for the transportation
department. He received his TAPT certification in 2008 and has served as an
instructor in numerous professional development courses.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 609
Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st
and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 838
Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the
Crossbridges Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen
neighborhoods. Being a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address
the needs of our scouts more nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11
to 17 within our group working to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly,
with a wide variety of locations on our agenda. The different locations are
chosen by the senior boys to more directly meet our training needs and
to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some of the lowest expenses in the
area. Our adult leaders are all experienced with years of scouting under
their belt per individual. We also work closely with several local packs of
cub scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well. Please
contact us at TROOP838CYPRESS.ORG or 414-331-3321.
TROOP 1865
Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,
with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30
PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind
Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling
off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything
else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at
Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to
achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average
rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about
leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.
We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have
allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.
25 CAMPGROUNDS WITHIN/AROUND
2 HOURS OF HOUSTON TX
It’s summertime and that means it’s time to get out the camping gear, fishing
poles and sun screen! There’s no better way to relax than to sit outside of the
tent you just set up and breathe in.
SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL PARK: NEW WAVERLY, TX
This gorgeous national park offers tent pads, picnic tables, parking spurs
for trailers, lantern posts, grills, potable water, and toilets. Hiking is very
popular in the spring when the climate is milder. Water activities get
going in the summer on Double Lake with canoes and paddleboats that
can be rented from the park. Deer is the most popular game animal in the
Sam Houston National Forest, with squirrels second. Quail and dove are
found around newly regenerated timberland. For the water sportsman,
fishing and duck hunting can be enjoyed on area lakes and streams.
BRAZOS BEND: NEEDVILLE, TX
This park has got plenty of options for activities during your stay. Lots
of trails, some of which are even wheelchair friendly, wind through the
woods and bring you to the water’s edge of the lake. Just make sure you’ve
brushed up on your alligator safety because they’re not uncommon in
certain areas of the park. Aside from walking or biking the trails, there’s
also the option of horseback riding on one of the multiuse trails.
LAKE CONROE KOA: MONTGOMERY, TX
Here’s a KOA that’s got your back this weekend if you’re trying to relax
to the max. Bring your RV here, up to 80’ and enjoy the cable tv, wifi,
hookups and pools to lounge in all day. If you haven’t got an RV, don’t
feel left out! You can stay in one of the 35 cabins that have bathrooms and
a full kitchen. Tent campers are welcome as well. Visitors can explore the
area and find the nearby golf course, restaurants and the lake has plenty
of recreational activities.
GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK: GALVESTON, TX
This park is a freaking island, so as far as camping goes you really can’t
go wrong with this option. There is hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching
and lots more. One of the many things that make this island campground
unique is the paddle trails they boast. Though, if you decide to go on these,
you’ll need to bring your own canoe or kayak because they don’t rent them
out. Outside the campground, there is an educational theme park called
Moody Gardens. Bring the kids along and there’ll be plenty of nature for
people of various interests to enjoy and participate in during the stay.
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE PARK: SAN FELIPE, TX
This lovely State Park has six miles of hiking trails that are open to bikers
as well. Campsites have full hookups and some sites even hold up to 60
people. Stephen F. Austin State Park also holds events for youth over the
golf course, a beautiful riverbank to fish from and the San Felipe de
Austin State
HUNTSVILLE STATE PARK: HUNTSVILLE, TX
Here’s a State Park full of relaxation. You can go and unwind in the shade
of the trees and go fishing from one of the fishing piers or off your boat
or canoe. There are watercraft for rent including paddleboats, canoes and
kayaks. There’s even a bird blind to enjoy watching the local feathered
friends who flit about the forest.
SEA RIM STATE PARK: SABINE PASS, TX
This park has 4,000 acres of marsh and a boardwalk going through so you
can enjoy without getting your feet wet. Campers, cabin-dwellers and
RV-goers all have a place here at Sea Rim State Park. Feel free to fish from
the boardwalk or explore with your rented or own canoe or kayak. Sea
Rim also has the option to explore its grounds from home via their virtual
NORTHLAKE RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX
Come to Northlake RV Resort if you’re looking for a nice and relaxing place
to kick your feet up and breathe deeply. This resort has got a massive list of
amenities so it’s ridiculous to try to write them all here, but if you’re interested
you should definitely check out their website. Some of the best aspects of
this resort are the park-wide wifi, the stocked fishing lakes and the fire pits.
This place allows for extended stays and weekend trips, so regardless of your
plans you’ll definitely have plenty of options right next to home!
TRADERS VILLAGE RV RESORT:
Traders Village is a short drive for you and a wonderful place to stay. The
electric and water hookups are free, there is a pool for swimming, and
there’s wifi. Bring your picnic supplies so you can eat outside at the picnic
tables while enjoying the weather. You’re welcome to lounge around
and enjoy relaxing or you can go next door to the flea market that hosts
events and activities for visitors.
ALLSTAR RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX
At AllStar RV Resort, they’ve got anything you could need while camping
in your RV and more. If you’ve got yourself a Fido who wanders himself
into a smelly situation, there’s a dog washing station here for your (and
your nose’s) convenience. Take advantage of the swimming pool, the
computer room, the recreation room and more. There’s also a stadium
nearby for baseball fans to watch their games.
ESCAPE THE PAVEMENT: HOUSTON, TX
There are actually two camping sites associated with Escape the Pavement
near Houston. There are four aspects to Escape the Pavement: Heyne
Ranch, Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Blackwood Land Institute and Big
Thicket National Preserve. It’s actually super great, because no matter
your flavor preference of outdoors experience, this place has got you. One
is a ranch for you and your horse to enjoy pastures, rivers and wooded
trails; perfect for a day trip. You’ll also love the bonfires on the beach! One
of their campgrounds has over 4,000 acres of forest and a creek that you
can go ahead and explore the trails winding around through it on your
horse, bike or on foot. The other area available for camping is restricted to
primitive camping only because it is located on a preserve. Lastly, the land
institute is a great educational place for kids and adults alike. Check out
their website if any of these interest you and start planning a trip!
LAKE SOMERVILLE: SOMERVILLE, TX
The campground and park are also full of opportunities for fun in the sun.
Water activities like swimming, skiing, fishing, and the likes are all great
ideas on Lake Somerville. There are picnic areas for campers or day hikers
to sit, enjoy the view, and munch on their sandwiches. Birdwatching,
volleyball, hiking and horseback riding are popular pass times. Overall,
this is a wonderful place to relax and play in the great outdoors.
SHELDON LAKE STATE PARK: HOUSTON, TX
Sheldon Lake State Park is open to fishing and wildlife observation. You’re
welcome to take your boat out for a ride or fish off the banks, so long as
you’re wary of the alligators inhabiting the park. The learning center has
tons of activities for the kids that you can sign up for and enjoy. Some
of these activities are more hands-on, like catch and release fishing
and some are visual demonstrations like green building technologies
or smart wildscape demonstrations for gardening and using beautiful
native plants.
BASTROP STATE PARK: BASTROP, TX
A forest with a history and personality, the Lost Pines located on Bastrop
State Park used to be a luscious and well-groomed forest before being
damaged by floods and fires. Now, the forest’s recovery is just as beautiful
a sight. The story itself is a perfect reason to visit, but Bastrop also has
swimming, biking, hiking and geocaching as an incentive. If you’re
looking to exploring the surrounding area, Bastrop also has museums
and restaurants to check out on your vacation!
BUESCHER STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX
Experienced bicyclists looking for a challenge will enjoy the bike trails
here at Buescher State Park. This park connects with Bastrop State Park via
a paved road with great views of the area. Unfortunately, there is currently
no swimming in this park, but if you adventure the short commute to the
nearby Bastrop you’ll find a nice swimming pool for visitors like yourself.
Lastly, if you’re hankering to float along in a tandem kayak or a canoe, you
can do so through rental at Buescher State Park.
LOCKHART STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX
This park has a pool, grounds for camping, trails to hike and a nine-hole
golf course among many other things that allow you to get active! If you
want to go fishing but don’t want to lug around your equipment, you’re
in luck! The park has fishing equipment available for guests to use during
their stay. If you’re looking to have a gathering of people for a family or
church event, there is a Group Recreation Hall that also has a kitchen
capable of holding up to 75 people at once.
LAKE LIVINGSTON: LIVINGSTON, TX
If you’re looking for a beautiful place to host a family reunion, try looking
here! Campsites have full hookups and there are rentable screen shelters
as well. As long as you’re wary of the alligators that dwell in the area,
visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, birding, swimming, and biking. On
your way in and out you can stop at the souvenir shop that sells treats
and equipment!
LAKE LIVINGSTON KOA: ONALASKA, KOA
Here’s a popular KOA that you’ll probably need to make a reservation for
ahead of time to ensure you get yourself a spot for the night. There is
a beautiful pool with lounge chairs for you to relax and sink into while
soaking in the sun. Your kids will enjoy the playground. If you love
enjoying the great outdoors and its many inhabitants, there is a local bald
eagle named Eddie who supposedly flies around the area frequently.
There is also fishing, a pavilion to admire the scenery in, and is known for
the sunset views.
VILLAGE CREEK STATE PARK: LUMBERTON, TX
Campers interested in sleeping in tents, RVs or cabins are welcome here.
You’ll be able to go swimming, fishing, biking, hiking and more with your
friends and family. If you prefer to learn about your surroundings and its
history rather than being emerged in the real deal, there are programs
and museums aplenty for you to observe and glean information from
during your stay.
PALMETTO STATE PARK: GONZALES, TX
This little oasis has a multitude of thirsty plants that cannot live in other
areas due to the lack of water. The park is named for the dwarf palmettos
that grow beneath the trees. As a visitor, you can also enjoy the copious
amounts of flowing and stagnant water by swimming, tubing, fishing
and canoeing. Those interested in keeping dry will enjoy bird watching,
hiking, geocaching or staring at the dwarf palmettos.
VICTORIA COLETO CREEK LAKE KOA: VICTORIA, TX
Come to this RV and tent camping site to enjoy the lovely wildflowers,
scattered oaks, birds and other wildlife. There is a pond with catfish that you
can relax on the edge of while fishing and other areas for freshwater fishing.
The winters are not as frigid as up north, so you can always count on decent
weather should you decide to vacation here! There are plenty of places in the
area for you to check out, making it perfect for both short or extended stays.
Chocolate Raspberry Cloud
You could make this on National Raspberries N’ Cream Day August 7th!
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup raspberry syrup
1 (9 ounce) package thin chocolate wafers
1/4 cup fresh raspberries (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves (optional)
1/8 cup semisweet chocolate curls (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
To Make Crust: In a small bowl, mix together crushed cookies and melted butter. Press
mixture into a 9 inch pie pan using your hands or the back of a spoon. Refrigerate until
firm.
To Make Filling: Whip 2 cups of cream until soft peaks form. Continue to whip while slowly
adding sugar, followed by vanilla extract. Whip until stiff, then stir in 1/2 cup raspberry
syrup.
Spread a layer of whipped cream mixture 1/2 inch deep into bottom of pie crust. Cover
with a layer of chocolate cookies. Cover with another 1/2 inch layer of whipped cream
mixture, followed by more cookies. If desired, slightly overlap the cookies, dipping them
in whipped cream mixture before placing them in pan. Continue alternating layers until
cookies are gone, and finish with a layer of whipped cream mixture. Cover carefully.
Refrigerate at least 12 hours before serving. Pie will keep up to 3 days.
Just prior to serving, whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and cover pie with a fresh layer. If
desired, garnish with fresh raspberries, mint leaves and chocolate curls.
Garden Tips For August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood.
Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron
cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around
the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/
or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new
generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly.
If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look
like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease
environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material,
mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments
like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a
favorable environment.
