Annual Report 2019-20 | Bermagui Surf Life Saving ClubDisaster ReliefAs a result of the incredible job our team did with theimpromptu evacuation centre after the Tathra fires(2018), Bermagui SLSC had been named the officialEvacuation Centre for our community. Although wewere not expected to be utilised for the impending fireswhich were expected to strike Bermagui on or aroundNew Year’s Eve, we were called into action when thefires consumed Cobargo, Quaama and other areas westof us. On a moment’s notice we opened the club houseand utilised our evacuation plan which was developedafter the Tathra fire. Within a few hours there were over5,000 people in and around the club house, DickinsonPark and the Oval. We provided support for thecommunity until other arrangements could be made toevacuate to safer locales. Once the crowds had beenmoved to safer venues, we became the base for somelocal emergency services teams. New members likeHelen Morris and John Carter managed the kitchenwhile Dennis Walker from Marine Rescue managed theoutdoor cooking area, providing meals and comfort toemergency workers. As a result of our club’sexperience, plans have been made to develop the clubhouse to increase capability to host large groups ofpeople who have been evacuated. We have plans todevelop unused areas under the main floor to housesupplies, we’ve sourced funding and are well on ourway to achieving our budget goals. A generator largeenough to supply electricity to the entire building is inthe plan as well as much needed upgrades to ourkitchen and communication options. Grants totalingmore than $100,000.00 to fund these plans have beenapplied for and awaiting approval. Some have alreadybeen approved.GrantsOther grants applied for and approved include almost$20,000 for a new IRB and trailer, and $5,000 towardsthe generator. Also submitted and awaiting outcome isa grant to fund a new hoist to help Extra Needsindividuals to access our beach wheelchair.8
Annual Report 2019-20 | Bermagui Surf Life Saving ClubCOVID-19This report is not complete without a mention of our pandemic. COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into thisseason. We got through the January fires, rain in February and then pandemic from March onward. Weshut the doors of the club toward the end of March and are only now (end of July) making plans to openon a limited basis. Under the leadership of Euan McKenzie, plans are being formulated and submitted tothe NSW government to allow us to open our doors in accordance with the current guidelines. Theclubhouse has been open to emergency use only and our Call-out Team area is accessible to teammembers in emergency situations, pre-planning and maintenance functions. In lieu of normal patrols, theCall-out team also provided roving patrols through April and are still available 24/7 in case of emergencycall-out.AwardsCongratulations on Club awards go out to:• Ella Marshall: Female Junior Lifesaver of the Year• Zane Curven: Male Junior Lifesaver of the Year• Zane Curven: Junior Club Person of the Year• Hannah Buchli: Cadet Life Saver of the Year• Carlin Stanford: Club Person of the Year• Maureen Croft: Administrator of the Year• Andrew Curven: Bermagui SLSC Life Saver of the Year,FSC Branch Life Saver of the YearAcknowledgementsWe have had significant contributions made to our effort this year by every level of the Surf Life Savingmovement. We thank our members and volunteers for all the input they have given. At the Branch level,I’d like to thank our Branch President, Tony Rettke, for his leadership and sage advice. The fact that ourentire Far South Coast Branch operates as one big team has made this year go a lot smoother than onewould have thought. Thanks go out to all our associates in the Far South Coast Branch, from Bateman’sBay to Pambula and everywhere in between. The success of a club is reliant on so many contributionsand we appreciated every piece of input and energy, whether it be large or small.
