The Word on the Street
haddonfield.today | 3
On Wed Aug 26, the Historical
Society will mark the 100th
anniversary of women’s suffrage
(see page 28).
Some believe a national lottery
with a huge prize would boost
voter turnout. How big would it
need to be to prompt the most
apathetic of citizens to vote?
Woodbury’s CHRIS
CUNEO thinks folks
who don’t vote might
be motivated to “get
up off the couch” if
they stood to win “a
million dollars.”
“My first thought
is ten million,” says
CHARLIE LAFFERTY
of Cherry Hill, “but to
make sure it would
work I think you’d
need to offer a top
prize of $100,000,000.
Tax-free!”
At first, ROE
MINCHIN of
Lindenwold thought
“a thousand dollars
should be enough.”
Then she realized
it would take a lot
more “to motivate
some of the folks I
know.” $100 million!
Moorestown’s DAN
EVERINGHAM
says he doesn’t
need an incentive
to vote, “especially
this year.” He thinks
a $1,000,000 prize
would motivate
many “apathetics” to
head for the polls.
NICK STAFFIERI
of Clayton says he
knows a number of
people who “never
vote,” but he’s sure
they’d be motivated
by a prize of $100
million or more.
“Heck – that would
get my attention,”
he says.
Oaklyn’s ELYSSA
PALMISANO did
the math. “About
100 million people
vote in a presidential
election,” she says.
“So the prize should
be ten percent ... ten
million!”

Businesses tell shoppers: ”We Care!”
As our everyday lives continue to be altered due to COVID-19, Haddonfield
businesses have adjusted to the “new normal” by providing ways to safely
shop in-store, online, and with contactless curbside pick-up; and to safely dine
outdoors or use take-out and delivery services.
The Downtown is adhering to state guidelines by requiring visitors to wear
masks indoors and outdoors during their visit, not only for their protection,
but for the safety of others around them. Wherever possible, six feet of social
distance should be maintained, and sanitizing protocols should be practiced.
“We want our visitors to know that Haddonfield cares deeply about their
safety and well-being, as well as that of our business owners. We therefore
have implemented a number of directives and best practices to keep everyone
safe while enjoying our beautiful Downtown,” explained Remi Fortunato, the
Partnership for Haddonfield’s retail recruiter. We want to show “We Care!”
Haddonfield Heirloom Project
The Public Library and The Best Day of My Life So Far are partnering to
create the Haddonfield Heirloom Project, a fusion of cutting-edge technology
and the timeless art of inter-generational storytelling.
History exists in the everyday objects surrounding us. Teapots, clocks,
tables. Our homes are filled with the stories of our families. The project
partners will be developing a virtual reality collection of heirlooms from
Haddonfield homes and the owners’ stories so that all residents may interact
with these cherished objects for years to come.

ORGANIC-BASED TURF PROGRAM
We’ve worked with certified turf and soil specialists to develop
a new turf program that will dramatically REDUCE the output
of synthetic fertilizer and salt-based products that have been
overused in our industry for too long.
We incorporated industry-leading,
organic-based soil treatments
and fertilizers with tried-and-true
products that focus on the soil makeup
of your lawn. With this blend, your lawn
can increase its ability to absorb nutrients,
reducing the need for consistent chemical enhancement.
The best defense against insect damage,
turf disease, and weed population is THICK GRASS. This can
be achieved with the assurance that you’re increasing your curb
appeal while reducing synthetic chemical output.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Our program reduces the feeding
activity of adult mosquitoes,
prevents larvae from hatching, and
repels ticks from your property.
Other businesses treat twice as often as we do,
but since the focus of our trained technicians is prevention,
we can dramatically reduce the amount of insecticide released
into the environment.

Sand shortage!
Did you know that
Saudi Arabia imports
sand from Australia?
With the world’s
population increasing
and becoming ever more
urbanized, more and
more sand is needed
for the construction of
buildings, malls, office
towers. In some places,
sand is in such short
supply that shipments
have become the target

Sand is one of the
bases of our civilization,
and the sands of time are
running out.
On Tue Sep 22 at 7pm,
the Public Library will
host a presentation by
guest lecturer Buntzie
Churchill on the looming
shortage of sand.
Titled “What will we
bury our heads in when
we’ve run out of sand?”

resource.

#078 • AUGUST 7 TO 28, 2020
Message from Superintendent Chuck Klaus
When our students and staff left school on March 16, 2020, most of us could
not imagine they would continue in a virtual learning model through the end of
the year. This abrupt shift required schools to quickly re-imagine how to best
deliver virtual instruction and serve our students.
Today we are approaching the start of the 2020-21 school year. Once again,
we are facing a challenge we could not have foreseen one year ago, to start a
new school year that will look different than any we have experienced before.
To this end, over the past months, the District Leadership Team has been
focused on developing a plan to safely reopen schools in September in a way
that will meet the needs of all of our students and our dedicated staff.
We appreciate the difficulties and the stresses placed on staff and
families over the last five months. We also realize that each of us has unique
circumstances, perspectives, and feelings about how best to return to school.
During this process, many different models were explored and reviewed with
feedback from families, students, staff, community members and frequent
consultation with our district physician and nursing staff. Ultimately any
reopening plan must balance safety, instruction, and operations in a way to
provide the best solution for all 1,500 families and 350 staff in our district.
It comes as no surprise that developing a re-entry plan has been complicated
by the complexities of guidelines and information that seem to change daily.
In June, the NJ Department of Education released a recovery document n
outlining priorities to guide this process. Paramount among them is addressing
factors that will meet the needs of our families, students, and staff while
ensuring a safe and healthy environment in which to learn. Just last week,
the NJDOE released updated guidance, as did the CDC; each new update and
change has the potential to require us to rethink and rework our plans.
The work to balance all factors and forge an effective plan required
collaboration and effort from many individuals. In addition, a Steering

Super Summer Sale moves indoors
The Partnership for Haddonfield morphed its annual Sidewalk Sale into a
Super Summer Sale this year, and planned to have merchants set up in the
street – Kings Hwy E from the Speedline to Haddon Ave – on the first two days
(Thu Aug 6 and Fri Aug 7) .
But early-morning rain on Thursday led organizers to shift gears, moving
the outdoor sale indoors for that day. At press time, it was not clear what the
situation would be on Friday. Regardless, the sale definitely will be indoors on
Sat Aug 8 and Sun Aug 9, as originally planned.
To ensure health and safety, the selling of retail merchandise will not be
permitted on the sidewalks between the Speedline and Haddon Avenue.
Outdoor dining will continue to be permitted on designated sidewalk areas.
In keeping with its “We Care!” theme, the Partnership encourages shoppers
to comply with State-issued guidelines for masks and social distancing.

Girls run for a good cause, seek support
The HMHS Girl’s Cross Country team started running together in mid-July,
for the first time since COVID-19 turned everything upside-down.
To build spirit, and serve others, the girls are asking family, friends,
neighbors, and strangers to collectively match a runner’s five-week mileage
with food and pantry items for Cathedral Kitchen in Camden.
Items needed are: Individually wrapped granola bars, protein bars, trail
mix, bottled waters, sample sized shampoo, hand sanitizer, lotion, toothpaste,
soaps, full sized deodorant, disposable razors, toothbrushes, washcloths, face
masks, and new men’s socks.
If a runner’s goal is 100 miles over five weeks, she will need to collect 100
items. To contribute, email Caroll Stoner at jcstoner5@verizon.net.
The team will pick up items pledged by Fri Aug 14 from donors’ homes
through Sun Aug 16.

Boys Basketball 2019-20: Dawgs Hit the Heights
By Lauree Padgett for Haddonfield Today
Basketball is never far from my mind, even in the nine long months between
mid-March and mid-December. However, on Thanksgiving Day 2019 at the
traditional Haddonfield-Haddon Heights gridiron matchup (which hasn’t been
much of a contest recently), I wasn’t thinking about hoops as I watched the
Red and Black start pulling away from the Garnet and Gold. However, when
the Dawgs’ lead was becoming insurmountable, two Heights fans a few rows
behind me decided to look ahead to, and apparently take some solace in, the
upcoming winter sports season.
Said one Garnet fan to the other, “Well, at least Haddonfield won’t be much
of a threat in basketball this season,” alluding to the fact that almost all the
players who had taken the team to back-to-back state titles in 2018 and 2019
had graduated. “Yes,” was the reply, “Heights, Sterling, and West Deptford are
going to be the teams to beat in the conference this year.”
voice, “Never underestimate a team coached by Paul Wiedeman.” I’m not
sure they took my warning seriously then, but three-plus-months later, I
wondered if my words came back to haunt them.
Dawgs in the Hunt
But it wasn’t just two guys from Heights who weren’t giving the Dawgs much
of a chance in the upcoming season. In the Inquirer’s preseason South Jersey
boys basketball poll, the Dawgs didn’t even make the “Under Consideration”
section. That changed within the first few games, and then on January 14,
Haddonfield broke through to the No. 10 position, sporting a 7-1 record. Keeper
of the Top 10, Phil Anastasia, noted, “Remember Haddonfield? … Haddonfield,
which in 2019 won its second straight state title, … landed in the Top 10 for
the first time this season, courtesy of a six-game winning streak that includes
dramatic victories over Colonial Conference rivals Haddon Heights and West
Deptford.” For the rest of the season, the Dawgs
stayed in the Inquirer Top 10, going as high as the
5th spot on February 11, when they were 18-2, and
finishing their 25-5 season back at No. 10.

Historical Society to celebrate
100th anniversary of suffrage
The Historical Society will host a virtual program
on Wed Aug 26 to celebrate the 100th anniversary
of women winning the right to vote. (The 19th
Amendment to the Constitution was adopted on
August 26, 1920.)
The program, which will start at 11:40am, is timed
to coordinate with the national “Toast to Tenacity”
virtual celebration.
The Society will welcome independent historian
Lisa Hendrickson to learn more about the roles
that South Jersey women played in the suffrage
movement. Lisa is a board member at the Alice Paul
Institute, and has performed extensive research in
the Society’s archives and elsewhere to help tell the
story of South Jersey suffragists.
At 12n, the group will join the national “Toast to
Tenacity” virtual celebration, which will include
speakers, music from the Philadelphia Orchestra
and others, and a nationwide toast at 1pm to
celebrate the suffragists who won voting rights for
American women.

When you shop online, in big-box stores, or dine at
out-of-town restaurants, your money leaves Haddonfield
immediately, and doesn’t come back.
But when you shop in town, the businesses you patronize
spend some of that money locally. They also support
community, sports, and school organizations and activities.
Keep your cash in your community!
