A Word from the Editor
Oh what a joy it was when we took a walk over
to the Nursery Inn a few weeks ago, to be greeted
by a guy enjoying a pint out in the beer garden,
reading a copy of ShapeMag. I have to admit, it
was a very proud moment for me. But enough
of the sentimental rubbish, what’s going on in
Hartlepool?
The big one is the announcement that live indoor
music will not be restarting, as planned on 1st
August following a last minute announcement
on 31st July. Confusion has been hanging over
the type of venues which could host gigs once
the restrictions are eased. Hopefully the ‘Big
Question this month has shedded light on that.
Also, I have to give our newest writer a big
fat howdy and hello, all the way from Radio
Hartlepool. Yes folks, the man himself, Lee
Theasby has now firmly attached himself each
month to our pages, starting this month with a
cracking interview with Elena Larkin. Got to say
a big thank you to Lee for sharing us around the
community in fine style over the last month. Big
thank you, mate. It’s also a bit of a release bonanza
this month with our featured artists ‘Leopard

in The Scene. I have
to admit, I am loving
them all.
Anyway, that’s it from
me this month, enjoy

out there.

The proposed restart for
indoor performances
due to come into play
on 1st August has been

A tweet from Oliver
Dowden, the Culture

“ The PM has confirmed
we cannot go ahead with
some easings planned for
1st August - we are hoping
for a postponement of
a fortnight. This means

The news comes as a big
disappointment for many
venues and artists hoping

LEE’S LIFE
RADIO HARTLEPOOL
SHAPEMAG is proud to feature our newest writer, Radio Hartlepool’s very own
Lee Theasby. This month features Lee’s interview with Elena Larkin.
my entire year group in our secondary school
talent show. It was scary but I loved it. I started
writing music around the same time as the
singing competition.
Music runs throughout your family. Can you
tell us a bit about that?
I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing
Elena Larkin a few times over the years
on Radio Hartlepool and I’m amazed at
how she’s not only a great singer but writes
a lot of material too. I’ve caught up with
Elena recently to talk about her influences,
songwriting and Coronavirus.
How old were you when you first realised you
were interested in performing and writing music?
Performing is something I’ve always loved to
do. My mam says I could sing before I could
talk and that I would put on little shows for my
family and friends. You would think I would
have sang in front of an audience when I was
really young but my first solo performance
wasn’t until I was 14. I was singing in front of
Growing up I was surrounded by music. My
love for singing really came from when my
Nan and Grandad picked me up from primary
school. My Grandad would play retro music,
rock n roll, country, pop and he would always
be singing along. I remember one time, I was
trying to sing a song by the Chordettes and he
would listen to 7-year-old me trying to sing
along with the song “Lollipop” and he would
say “try it like this”. I always looked forward to
those car rides home from school.
Do you feel that you’ve grown as a songwriter
over the years and what’s your favourite one (so
far)?
Definitely! I always write about the things
that happen in and around my life, so my
inspiration for writing comes from the same
place but how I write has definitely changed as
I’ve learnt more about different writing styles.
When I first began to write music, I would sit
at a piano or with my guitar and play a few
chords until they sounded good together and
then work on the lyrics. Now, I can hear the
exact melodies and instruments I want playing
in the song, and I always come up with either
an entire chorus or beginning line.
| 08 www.shapemag.co.uk
Lee’s Life
My favourite? I would have to say “Miss Communication”
and a new one,“Leece Street”.
Both of these songs haven’t been released yet
so I can’t wait for people to hear them.
You’ve recorded at Abbey Road Studios. How
did that happen?
It happened a couple of months after I won the
school talent show. I decided to join a talent
agency for aspiring singers and one day an
advertisement came up for “Record at a top
London Studio” and I entered.
A week later I received a message though the
website saying I hadn’t won but there was another
message inviting me down to the studio
in London for a chat. The address was listed
as1 Abbey Road St Johns Wood London. We
thought it was a scam or something, but we
went and it was THE Abbey Road.
I was offered the opportunity to work with a
team of people to record original music with
them and it was amazing.I learnt so much
about the music industry, music business, music
law, and songwriting. The inside of Abbey
Road is like a musical history lesson.
You teach music as well. It must be rewarding to
see students improve over your time with them?
I have my own business called “Elevate Vocal
Academy” EVA for short. I teach the same
vocal techniques used in the music industry
today to protect the singing voice. I’ve had
students sing in the West End and come a
close second in the North East’s biggest music
competition. I’ve shared tears of joy with
them, high fives all around, it’s a really fun and
positive environment and I can’t wait for the
day I get to teach everyone in person again.
Do you still enjoy performing live?
I do and still get nervous too! It’s something
I’ll always love and care about. I love performing
in different venues and festivals. Even
when I’m older you’ll be seeing me wheel on
stage with a microphone in my hand!
What are your future plans?
I’ve had to cancel a lot of shows this year and
missed out on some incredible opportunities,
but keeping people safe is more important. I’ve
been using my time learning how to record
covers at home and I’ve been posting them
online. I’ve been approached by a couple of
companies with exciting opportunities and I’m
still working with my EVA students via Skype.
I’ll be back to teaching face to face soon in
my studios in The Centre for Excellence in
Creative Arts on King Oswy Drive and I’ll be
continuing to focus on recording cover songs
and writing new material and continue doing
TV work, with appearances on Vera, Belgravia
and Victoria as well as kids TV shows. I will
continue working hard to achieve my ambitions
and dreams.

SHAPEMAG
MEET MIKE BURTON
Hartlepool’s Answer To Seasick Steve
It all started one Saturday afternoon in
January when we decided to walk into
our first pub in Hartlepool to sample
the beer and local hospitality. March on
six months, I would never imagined that
I would be writing an article on the very
first person that said hello to us in the
Causeway Inn, Hartlepool.
The conversation we had was mainly about
music and guitars and both of our loves for
the blues scene. I mentioned to my new
friend, Mike Burton that I had a fondness
for playing Blues Slide when he directed
my attention to the homemade cigar box
slide guitars adorned on the wall. More
surprisingly, he informed me that he made
them, in fact this was Mike’s hobby.
Once SHAPEMAG was up and running
properly, I set about tracking Mike down
for an interview to find out more about his
craft. Boy was I in for a surprise.
We finally met at the Guitar Studio where
Mike displays and sells his creations. He
brought in a selection of some of the nicest
instruments I have ever seen. Some of
the craftsmanship would put many of
the professional companies to shame. Of
course some of them are designed to be
made from odds and sods such as the pool
cue guitar with a block of pool chalk for a
volume control and just one string which
Mike has called the ‘Diddly Bo’ (pictured).
So I had to ask Mike, what has possessed
him to build such a fine but obscure
collection.
“I saw Seasick Steve on TV with guitars
made from broom handles and hubcaps so I
thought, if he can do it, so can I’”
That was around 4 years ago and he’s been
adding to the collection ever since making
guitars from all sorts of materials such as a
piece of 4x2, dog bowls, pallets, and course,
cigar boxes. The guitars range from 6
string, 4 string, 3 string and like the ‘Diddly
Bo, the 1 string. He’s even made one out of
a clear plastic box showing the wiring and
works. All of the guitar are fully functional
and very playable giving real authentic
1930’s resonator tones.
| 12 www.shapemag.co.uk
Mike Burton
But here was a question I asked him when we first
met. “So what style do you play, Mike?” His answer
kind of left me a little dumbfounded.
“I can’t play a note.” He said with a smile on his
face. That’s right, despite Mike’s talent for creating
great instruments, he’s never learnt to play. He also
says that he only made them out of passion and for
something to do. He’s never thought about selling
them. The Guitar Studio has recently stepped in to
help him out on that side,
Despite not being able to play, it hasn’t stopped
him creating some wonderful instruments like the
Stratocaster style guitar shown in the collection
below and the stratocaster made and donated to a
local lad who was terminally ill with cancer with the
proceeds going to Cancer Charities. Sadly, the lad
passed away not long after.
He has even created a Lap-steel guitar from a lump of 4 x 2 wood. That particular one is
on display, with many more from his collection at the Guitar Studio on York Road. These
lapsteels are a favourite amongst Blues players and Country & Western players.
Mike currently makes his guitars at the Hartlepool Men’s Shed, a place for males to make
and mend things, a larger version
of your typical garden shed! Well,
that`s true, but they are much
more than that. They are equally
about reducing isolation, helping
people to make friends and
improving health and well-being.
One final touch to all of Mike’s
guitars is the addition of the
Penny from the Penny-man. A
real great finishing touch to real
works of ‘Blues’ Art.
Get along to the Guitar Studio
and take a look at his collection
or maybe even part with a few
pounds to own a real piece of
music craftsmanship.

NEXT STOP VEGAS
Bringing The Good Times Back To Hartlepool
One of the brilliant sides to
writing this magazine is getting
the opportunity to discover the
talent around our wonderful town. This
month I put a real great covers band in
the spotlight, Next Stop Vegas’.
The band formed in May 2017, primarily
to play covers we all loved to listen to.
Paul, Barney and Mark have been in
original bands such as “Goodbye Hayley
Mills”, who once played a support slot
with The Stranglers at their convention
of 1993 in New Cross, London, and
The Vanity Rules, who played the now
defunct PigPen Festival near Trimdon in
2007 and 2009.. When “Vanity Rules”
met its inevitable end in April 2017, the
3 of us decided to just jam some covers.
We sat in a pub and wrote down the
music we liked listening to, listed a few
bands we were in to and got down to
playing for fun. To our great surprise
it sounded pretty good but we were of
course missing a singer.
In walks Steven Dunn, a seasoned singer
from bands such as “Crimson Skies”
and “Last Anthem”. He’s the baby of
the band as the rest of us are older than
| 14 www.shapemag.co.uk
Next Stop Vegas
dirt. As an addition they also now have
Young Lewis to take over the drumming
duties as Barney now has other work
commitments. Unfortunately, like the
rest of us ‘Next Stop Vegas have been
forced in to a hiatus due to the Covid-19
pandemic but no doubt, we will be
seeing them back on the circuit as the
restrictions begin to lift.
They play an eclectic mix of rock, pop
and punk. As well as some of the “usual
suspects” they also pick songs that are
not the most obvious picks from the
famous bands we cover. Bands and
artists such as The Who, The Police,
The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Arctic
Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis and
so much more making for a very
interesting and very entertaining gig.
Check out their website where you
can get in-depth info on the band and
their music plus a good mix of vids
on youtube for you to enjoy. Also
remember to follow them on the social
media.

Doornbos North East FGR
On Yer Bike’s For The Great North Air Ambulance Service
SHAPEMAG is a huge
supporter of the charitable
causes in the North East,
something which we will
be pushing in our future
editions. This month, it gives
me great pleasure to feature
the Doornbos North East
Football Ground Ride (FGR)
in support of The Great North
Air Ambulance Service. Recently
I caught up with event
organiser, Marc Hall to tell
me more about the event.
Marc, what is the Doornbos
North East FGR all about?
It is an Annual event held on
the first Sunday of September.
The first year, 25 riders took
part and raised over £650 for
the RAF benevolent fund. I
normally organise the event
with my best friend Graham
Purnell, a serving members of
the RAF I met when I served
20 years ago. But due to obvious
reasons he hasn’t been
able to take part this year.
That’s understandable. But
you are going ahead this year,
so what about the charity side
of things?
Over £5,500 was raised last
year for The Great North
Air Ambulance Service with
110 participants cycling.
We cycled to each of the
football grounds starting at
Darlington and finished in
Newcastle, so Darlington,
Middlesbrough, Hartlepool,
Sunderland and Newcastle.
Last year the event was also
sponsored by Doornbos and
they have chosen to back the
event again. We also always
use a unique designed jersey
and 90% of the riders wear
them.
| 16 www.shapemag.co.uk
Doornbos North East FGR
So tell me about this year’s
event, how can our readers get
involved?
Well, please do come and join
The Doornbos North East
FGR and help raise funds
for a truly wonderful charity
we all hold very dear to our
hearts. Registration is open
now and details can be found
at the end of this page. The
event is on 6th September
2020 commencing at 9:00am.
It is a full circular route which
starts and finishes in Darlington,
cycling through Darlington,
Stockton High Street,
through Middlesbrough,
Seaton Carew, Hartlepool and
then over back towards Darlington.
The route is around
about 80 miles in total.
Obviously this year presents
its own challenges so we
will be setting groups of 25
off at 25 minute intervals to
ensure public safety. There
will also be water stops and
food stations available along
the route. We are expecting
around 100 to sign up and
take part this year.
Thank you Marc and good
luck with the event.
Marc is still looking for event
sponsors, donations and help
with water stops. So if you

SHAPEMAG
The Big Question
THE BIG QUESTION
It’s All A Land Of Confusion At The Moment But
Who Will Be Able To Host Gigs Once It All Starts?
We were all set to get back on the Gig bandwagon
on 1st August and the the Government
announced that would not happen just yet. As
I’m writing this Oliver Dowden MP is hoping
for just a fortnight delay but I won’t hold my
breath just yet. Anyway, just recently there has
been all sorts of confusion on who can hold
gigs when Stage 4 of our Roadmap is finally
implemented.
Well, finally, I think I have sifted through the
political minefield and come up with what I
believe is how things will stand when it finally
happens, so here goes.
Stage 4 of the Government Arts restart
programme states live performances will be
permitted indoors with Covid Safety Measures.
However, Venues must ensure there
is a 3 metre gap between performers and
audience. Performers are to be professional
only (basically, this means no Karaoke’s or
Open Mic/Jam nights). Audiences to be social
distanced and where possible, tickets to be
issued to control audience numbers. There are
a few more rules and guidelines but that is the
very basic set up. Remember this will be when
the next phase is announced again.
The question here is, what is a meant by a
‘Venue’? Well, I checked out the Music Venues
Trust for the answer. We need to look at the
wording ‘Grassroots Music Venue’ which is
a venue specifically designed for live performances.
In our town, I would point my
finger at The Studio for a typical example. But
some other venues may also be allowed. My
thinking here will be venues such as Hartlepool
United Supporters Club where their
main room is a purpose built venue for live
performances. However, what is not allowed,
as far as my understanding sees it, is live performances
in public bars or lounge bars where
live performances is not the primary function
of that particular venue.
I take it you are all still scratching your heads
and looking bewildered. So here it is in it’s
basic form.
Question: Can pubs hold live entertainment
indoors once restrictions are eased to stage 4?
Answer: No, unless you are a grassroots
music venue or are a venue where live performance
are the primary function. However,
outdoor performances are permitted with
Covid secure safety measures.
I hope that sheds a good guiding light on the
state of affairs as we stand. Please do bear in
mind that this is simply how I have interpretted
the law after an awful lot of research. Do
seek advice from your local authorities before
planning any performances from 1st August.
Most of all, make sure you all stay safe.
