practice focused on architecture,

interior design and installations.

Through experimentation, research and theoretical insight, the

STACKLAB collection explores digital and physical processes to

create contemporary narrative works.

Borrowing from the technology sector, our process adheres to

the concept of ‘stack’-based design - that is, applied critical

thinking that leverages existing technologies, infrastructures, and

the people behind them to innovate.

Our ‘stack’ does not favour a particular discipline or method,

and as a result, our work does not have a unifying aesthetic

fingerprint. Instead, our collections are defined by our approach.

Our primary focus is creating art and design that challenges and

provokes our fellow citizens and patrons. We strive to incite awe

and wonder, stimulate critical cultural discourse and ultimately

provide enjoyment using a variety of materials and methods.

Jupiter | Low Table

The Jupiter low table pairs STACKLAB’s signature solid-bronze

Jupiter leg castings with an acrylic table top.

The Jupiter leg is a study in creating a completely asymmetrical,

yet aesthetically cohesive, geometry. The shape, derived digitally,

is readily castable, yet differs in every elevation, section and plan

view. Honouring central-eastern Canada’s manufacturing heritage,

the Jupiter legs are cast in sand- the same process used

to produce machine parts for heavy industry. The sand-casting

process produces faintly perceptible irregularities that enhance

the leg’s tactile appeal.

The planetary name pays homage to the subtitle of Mozart’s last

symphony, a favorite of the client who commissioned the first

Jupiter table.

Felt Collection

The Felt Collection, available as a bench or stool / side table,

features a plush seating surface made of layers of premium

natural merino wool felt. The stack is held together by

STACKLAB’s signature plated-steel clamping hardware.

The felt stack mixes colored and grey layers. An interstitial bronze

brace (or two, depending on the height of the stack) identical in

thickness to a felt layer, stiffens the stack to prevent racking.

The felt stack is available in quarter-height (18 layers), half-height

(48 layers) and full-height (80 layers) versions. The amount of

leg exposed varies in inverse proportion to the height of the felt

stack.

Each Felt stool and side table is supplied with an ergonomic

driver that aids in tightening or releasing the felt clamping

hardware. The driver’s tip fits into the slot atop the clamping

fastener, making it easy to reorder or tighten the felt layers.

To minimize cutting waste, felt layers are sourced from an online

database of available offcuts and end-of-bolt material.

Wishbone | Dining

Wishbone Series dining is available as a dining table or desk.

STACKLAB’s signature cast-metal Wishbone leg represents the

firm’s first foray into iterative, digital prototyping, a technique

that surpasses physical testing in its ability to optimize form and

significantly reduce waste.

The leg was originally created in aluminum to work with a 16’ long

x 48” wide x 3” thick hardwood tabletop. The form was optimized

for several structural stresses, such as deflection and frequency.

Since then, the materials palette has been expanded to include

bronze and iron, which perform similarly.

The tabletop is available in joined solid domestic hardwood

boards with reinforcing stitch joints in the same metal as the legs,

and Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC).

In the joined-hardwood top, the slightly different appearance

of each board—so unlike the unnatural perfection of veneered

furniture—generates unusual variety. STACKLAB welcomes the

small variances found in natural materials whose inconsistencies

disqualify their use in typical furniture applications. The Wishbone

series honours central-eastern Canada’s manufacturing heritage,

The Wishbone is cast in sand- the same process used to produce

machine parts for heavy industry.

ECC resembles, but is more elastic and less brittle than, concrete,

and better suited for the building of furniture. It uses

recycled glass as an aggregate and recycled fiber as a reinforcing

agent.

Wishbone | Single Casting

A single cast-metal Wishbone leg is paired with a demilune or

rectangular tabletop of solid metal or domestic hardwood. The

sand-casting process produces faintly perceptible irregularities

that enhance the leg’s tactile appeal. The wood top has STACK-

LAB’s signature reinforcing stitch joints in the same metal as the

legs.

1.5 | Chair and Bench

This dining, occasional chair and bench is notable for its nuanced

simplicity of form, carefully detailed classic wood joinery and

precision steel fabrication.

As the name implies, the 1.5 is the fifth and final iteration of a

case study on modular repetition. There are two repetitions of

two module types, each 1-11/16” thick. Ten modules add up to

an overall width of 17” as a standard width, however, additional

modules can be added to create wider seats on a custom basis.

Constructing the 1.5 from multiple modules in this way is an

efficient fabrication technique that produces a dimensionally

stable, finished piece from solid hardwood.

The angle of recline and the height of the seat back, along with

the radiused edge where the seat joins the front legs, ensure

comfort throughout the duration of a long-term sit.

The slightly different appearance of each board—so unlike the

unnatural perfection of veneered furniture—generates unusual

variety and gives the 1.5 a striking vibrancy. STACKLAB

welcomes the small variances found in natural materials whose

inconsistencies disqualify their use in typical furniture applications.

The 1.5 exemplifies STACKLAB’s belief that all materials are

inherently beautiful.

65 x 65 | Low Table

The 65 x 65 low table pairs a lacquer-sealed, solid

oxidized domestic hardwood tabletop and a trapezoidal

plated-steel leg. Metal stitch joints reinforce the

hardwood.

STACKLAB’s controlled oxidation process naturally

modifies the wood’s colour, revealing qualities that

would otherwise remain hidden. The oak tabletop goes

a warm grey-black; the maple version goes grey-green

taupe.

The top is made of joined solid boards. The slightly

different appearance of each board—so unlike the

unnatural perfection of veneered furniture—generates

unusual variety. Each board reacts individually to the

oxidation process to further emphasizes the top’s

subtle variations in nuance within the same tonal range.

STACKLAB welcomes the small variances found in

natural materials whose inconsistencies disqualify their

use in typical furniture applications. The 65 x 65 low

table exemplifies STACKLAB’s belief that all materials

are inherently beautiful.
