Celebrating 50 years of Quantum Design Europe

„Knowing is not enough, we must apply.

Willing is not enough, we must

do.“ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Know, apply, do: terms that shape

and influence our daily life. This

is especially true in the field of research

and development. Driven

by the quest for new knowledge,

ideas are developed, experiments

are planned, carried out and

hopefully confirmed and often

enough even rejected. Based on

these ideas and concepts, new, revolutionary

products and technologies

are created for the market.

Quantum Design Europe (QDE)

has been very successful in this

environment for 50 years now.

Originating in 1970 from the

representation of Oriel Instruments,

we are today the leading

distributor for high-tech systems

and components in Europe. Of

course, this path has not always

been easy, but some principles

have accompanied us throughout

the years.

We started in 1970 with the representation

of Oriel Instruments, a

manufacturer of optical components

and systems for the optical

laboratory. Over the years, this has

developed into a worldwide network

of different suppliers and

disciplines. Particularly exciting

is the constant mix of established,

sometimes large companies

on the one hand and the small

start-ups with innovative product

ideas and little experience in product

management and sales on

the other.

Our customers are mainly from

the fields of research and development.

Firstly, there are universities

and research institutes such

as Max-Planck and Fraunhofer

Gesellschaft. And there is always

research and development in industry.

QDE sees itself as an intermediary

between highly specialized manufacturers

and scientists. This can

only work if all partners meet at

eye level. We have always been convinced

that our work should follow

the motto „From scientists for

scientists“. Our employees in sales

and service all have a sound scientific

or engineering education, often

with a doctorate’s degree.

For all of this to work, all partners

need to meet and communicate

with each other. A person who

thinks scientifically and based on

facts may tend to underestimate

this aspect. Our in-house magazine,

Spectrum, has been accompanying

our customers since 1983.

In addition to trade fairs, conferences,

workshops, website, etc.,

Spectrum has been and still is the

medium through which we stay in

contact with our customers and

business partners.

Therefore, I am particularly pleased

to present to you our 50 th anniversary

issue.

I have had the good fortune and

honor of doing my part for over

25 years. It is particularly exciting

for me to continue to be closely

associated with basic scientific

research, equipped with the knowledge

of often long and laborious

experiments and failures before

a publication or the long-awaited

doctorate’s degree.

The promotion of science is a high

priority and is seen as a decisive

factor in Europe‘s future competitiveness.

The successes are already

visible today in the many start-ups

that have emerged in Europe. Obviously,

people dare to apply their

knowledge and do something

with it! With a young and dynamic

team, the Quantum Design Group

is ready to actively participate and

continue our success story for the

next 50 years.

I hope you enjoy reading this special

issue of our Spectrum and I

look forward to receiving your

suggestions and feedback on our

work.

Sincerely yours

Jürgen Schlütter

About us

Congratulations on 50 years!

Happy 50 th anniversary to LOT!

Quantum Design International

(QDI) is proud to have LOT as an

integral partner in our strategy to

provide quality scientific instrumentation,

backed up with unparalleled

technical support, to the

world’s major technology centers,

thereby offering maximized geographical

coverage through a single,

powerful distribution channel.

Quantum Design International

(QDI) is headquartered in our R&D/

manufacturing facility in San Diego,

CA. Here over 200 employees

– scientists, engineers and technicians

-- design and manufacture

QDI’s own proprietary line of instruments

for materials characterization.

Through QDI’s worldwide

offices, staffed with scientists from

physics, chemistry, life science and

other disciplines, we are able to

offer a high level of factory-trained

support services that is unmatched

by others in the industry.

These worldwide offices were established

with the understanding

that successfully penetrating new

territories and foreign markets

requires local offices dedicated to

meeting those customers’ unique

criteria, as business rules, traditions

and culture vary from country

to country, and often from region

to region.

The next step in the evolution of

the company was to offer the same

high level skill set to other manufacturers

of scientific instruments

that they might not be able to duplicate

internally, due to resource

or other geographic limitations. It

was here that the LOT merger set

the stage for QDI’s broader plans

for worldwide distribution and

support – offering “front line” supply,

applications and technical support

to scientists, across a much

broader range of scientific research

needs, in the areas of:

■ Lasers and Optics

■ Spectroscopy

■ Microscopy/Nanotechnology

(SPM, AFM)

■ Imaging (IR, C-MOS, Thermography,

Hyperspectral)

■ Metrology

■ Light sources/Detectors

■ Material characterization (physical

properties, magnetization)

■ Life Sciences/Biotechnology

QDI has enabled the advancement

of the most critical research and

development through the distribution

of these diversified product

lines to many of the world’s top laboratories

and analytical centers

within the industrial, educational

and government organizations. In

some cases, this has taken on the

added dimension of dedicated QDI

laboratories in some of the world’s

most prestigious institutions.

Today, with over 400 employees and

revenues in excess of $150M, QDI’s

growth and success is built upon

trusted business relationships and

a strong reputation for reliability

and service.

Behind everything we do at QDI,

lies our core values. These values

are based in fair business practices,

honesty and respect for our

employees and customers. In these

areas, we could not have found a

better partner than LOT.

About us

We introduce: Three of our

long-term employees

They know the business from the

ground up and strongly believe in

personal responsibility, freedom to

Petra Lorenz joined

the company (then

Oriel) in 1987, at the

age of 29, and over the

decades has worked

in the order processing

of all our product groups. She

has worked with many colleagues,

has seen the company grow and

expand, watched a new office building

being built, and experienced

firsthand how it is to work with a

small group of 20 and finally more

than 60 people. She knows the business

from the bottom up. She has

worked at so many different places

due to the changing demands that

she knows our office space from

every perspective. Years ago she received

a street sign saying „Petra-

Lorenz-Platz“ (Petra-Lorenz-Place)

as a gift from an admirer. It moves

with her to every new workplace.

She is always present at the company

celebrations and loves to dance.

A good working atmosphere and

fun in her area of responsibility is

the reason why she has stayed true

to our company for so many years.

Needless to say, she contributes a

great part to the good climate.

organize oneself and the power of a

cheerful team.

Marlene Fontan joined the

company after an exciting

period of life in which

she worked at a theatre,

bookshop, and pub and

broadened her mind by

low-budget travel and adventures. She

turned her back on Berlin in 1988 and

started working at Oriel as an assistant

in advertising. Her job was simple: put

information material in envelopes so it

could be mailed. She told one of the salesmen

at the time: „Six months at the most,

then I‘ll be gone.“ He is long since retired,

but when they meet today, he often says

with a wink „This has turned out to be a

very long six months“. One of the recipes

for good employee loyalty, she says, is a

high level of personal responsibility coupled

with the corresponding freedom to

organize one’s work. Quantum Design

stands for a high degree of individuality.

Back in the day, Marlene organized trade

fairs, created data sheets, and helped with

the initial steps of our website. Then, for

many years, she was in charge of production

and handling of our company magazine

Spectrum. Today, she looks after the

European satellites and ensures efficient

and collegial communication by establishing

faster routes and clearer structures.

With LOT Darmstadt (now Quantum

Design GmbH) we have a

long-standing, highly appreciated

and valuable business relationship,

especially in the fields

of spectroscopic ellipsometry and

quartz microbalance technology

(QCM), but also in the field of accessories

for FTIR spectroscopy. In

1996, the first Woollam ellipsometer

(M-44) was installed at the IPF

Dresden by Thomas Wagner (then

LOT). More instruments followed

(M-2000, Alpha SE, RC2, QCM-D) to

meet new requirements in layer

analysis. The in-situ characterization

of organic films is the focus

of our work at the IPF. Numerous

professional articles, international

lectures and awards (Paul Drude

Medal, Paul Drude Award) are

also proof of the reliability and

performance of the instruments,

but also of the excellent service

and competent advice provided

by the colleagues and friends of

LOT (now Quantum Design).

We would like to thank you for

this, congratulate you on the 50th

anniversary of the company and

wish you continued success in the

future.

is an integral part of

the company. He moves

like a fish in water in

the company‘s technical

center which can be seen by looking at

the activities he has undergone during

his time with us: He started as a service

technician in 1987, then became head

of the service department, got even

deeper into the technical organization

and dealt with the construction and administration

of our PC network. After a

few years, this also included the introduction

and administration of our ERP

(Enterprise Resource Planning) system.

Meanwhile, he is also involved in the

preparation of internal business statistics

and works as our ISO-9000 Quality

Management Representative. Currently,

he works at full speed on the introduction

and administration of a new Customer

Relation Management system.

For a time, he was also our official safety

officer. He comes from the depth of

the Odenwald (a low mountain range

which could almost be considered as

outback) which soundly shows in the

way he talks. Ever since, his family has

been around the company, too. When

his now grown-up daughter was little,

she used to ride around the company

on her unicycle to the delight of her

proud father.

About us

QD International and LOT-Oriel

On the 50 th anniversary of the founding

of LOT-Oriel, it may be appropriate

to think back on some of the

major events in the history of the

company and one of the most significant

of those must be the merger

with Quantum Design. The events

leading up to that merger may be

of interest for many Spectrum readers.

After 15 years of using a variety

of equipment distributors to sell its

products in foreign markets, by 1996

QD had begun to consider setting

up its own foreign operations. After

launching QD-Japan in 1997, we followed

that success with QD-Korea in

2003 and QD-China in 2004. Having

covered most of Asia, we began to

think about Europe as our next important

market.

In a coincidence of good timing, the

owners of LOT were all at or near retirement

age and looking for someone

to purchase their organization. In

early 2007 QD and LOT entered into

serious negotiations and signed the

merger documents in November. In

a single transaction, QD gained one

of the crown jewels in its worldwide

distribution system: representation

for the entire European continent,

including Russia via LOT’s relationship

with the Moscow-based company

LOT Akadem. Over the next few

years QD continued to expand its

global organization with QD-India,

QD-South America and QD-Southeast

Asia. Then in 2019 LOT changed its

name to QD-Europe.

Looking back from 13 years later, we

at QD have never doubted the mutually

beneficial relationship both

companies have enjoyed and we

certainly hope that the employees

of QD-Europe, in all of the different

countries, feel the same way. In addition

to the excellent business relationship

between the two companies,

there have been many opportunities

for personal friendships. I have

personally enjoyed many weeklong

sailing trips in places such as Croatia,

Athens and Mallorca with Ralph

Köhler, Jürgen Schlütter, and Manfred

and Margaret Berger. Greg DeGeller

(now the president of Quantum

Design) and his wife Marla have also

joined on several occasions.

I have often said that the merger of

QD and LOT was “a match made in

heaven.” All three parties got what

they wanted: the LOT owners received

cash for their retirement; QD

gained a world-class distribution

company covering one of QD’s most

important markets; and LOT gained

a strong manufacturing partner,

guaranteeing a substantial portion

of its annual revenue. In addition,

cooperation and information exchange

between QD-Europe and QD’s

many other distribution centers has

provided additional distribution opportunities

for the entire network.

Thirteen years later I still believe that

it was “a match made in heaven!“

About us

50 years Oriel ► L.O.T. ► L.O.T.-Oriel ► LOT-QuantumDesign

► Quantum Design Europe

„Once upon a time“ is still the most

popular introduction to fairy tales

today. Fortunately, our company

history is not a fairy tale, even

though some wondrous and remarkable

things have happened in

the last 50 years.

Let us start in the beginning. It all

began in 1970, when computers

and the internet were still a mere

utopia, and even the use of fax machines

lay about 10 years in the

future. At this time, a small company

named Oriel, from Stratford,

Connecticut, decided to exhibit

their products for the first time at

a trade show in Europe. To overcome

language barriers and arrange

for the necessary trade fair logistics,

they decided to acquire local

support, and the student Wolfgang

R. Weber was hired. The trade fair

was a great success, and some of

the products were already sold during

the fair. Interest in Oriel’s products

remained high even after the

fair. So, the logical result was the

foundation of Oriel GmbH, which

was officially registered on 23 June

1970 by Wolfgang R. Weber.

At that time, the concept of technical

sales was still largely unknown,

but the benefits for manufacturers

and customers were obvious.

Therefore, other suppliers soon

expanded our product range. One

of our oldest partners from our beginnings

is Specac from England.

A company we still gladly work together

with today. Our mutual contract

was signed in 1972.

Oriel extended this successful concept

to other European countries,

and in the 1970s, further Oriel offices

were established in England,

France, Switzerland and Italy. It

was also during this period that

first business transactions with

what was then the USSR were successfully

completed.

The first 10 years were characterized

by continuous growth; the

turnover in 1980 was a remarkable

6.5 million German marks (approx.

3.25 million Euros).

Then as now, a modern and convincing

marketing strategy was

required. The answer came in 1983

– the first Spectrum magazine was

sent to our customers. Right from

the start, Spectrum was designed

as a trade magazine. First and foremost,

it is meant to provide technical

and background information

on our products and suppliers. In

addition, we use it to introduce our

employees, announce trade fairs

and seminars, … All in all, it offers

everything you can expect from a

trade magazine. This concept still

works well today; only today it is

called content marketing.

A milestone in our history came at

the end of the 1980s. The company

founder wanted to retire. Five of

the employees at that time took the

opportunity to gain influence on

the fate and future of Oriel GmbH

through a so-called management

buy-out. By now, the turnover had

grown to an impressive

27 million German

marks. The change of ownership

was documented by a change of

name from Oriel GmbH to L.O.T.

GmbH, with L.O.T. being the abbreviation

for the terms Laser, Optics

and Technology – the shortest

possible summary of our targeted

business fields at that time.

And so, everyone was happy and

satisfied – at least initially. No one

could have foreseen that the Berlin

Wall would fall on November 9,

1989. For us, this meant the entire

business with the USSR stopped

overnight. And, because of that, all

forecasts regarding the financial

viability of the management buyout

also became void. For the first

time in our history, the company

was in real trouble.

True to the principle that wringing

your hands doesn’t help much,

we rolled up our sleeves and concentrated

on what we do best: the

technical sale of products requiring

explanation. In 1991, we won

Quantum Design (QD) from San

Diego as a new supplier. In 1992, J.A.

Woollam joined the list of partners,

and in 1998, a first contract was

signed with Andor Technology.

We still represent all three suppliers

today and they regularly occupy

the top positions in our sales

statistics.

At that time, we had no idea that

Quantum Design would one day

have such a great impact on our

future. Initially, the sales area for

QD products covered only Germany,

Austria and Switzerland. Over

About us

the years, the cooperation was gradually

extended to other European

countries. In addition, QD transferred

more and more support and

service tasks to L.O.T. Eventually, we

established the Quantum Design

European Service Center (QDESC).

From then on, all installation and

service work in Europe was handled

by the QDESC headquarters in

Darmstadt.

Do you remember the introduction

of the Euro 2002? A big step for the

European Community, controversially

discussed from the beginning

until today. We have always

considered the monetary union as

an opportunity and not a threat.

Subsequently, offices were established

in Sweden, Benelux, Spain,

Poland, Romania, Hungary and

other countries, all of which are

still active. At present, we are directly

represented in all major

European countries with a significant

scientific market and support

our customers in their native

language. We are proud to have established

the first pan-European

distribution network for scientific

systems and components.

In 2007, the management buy-outers

had lived through 18, partly turbulent

but ultimately successful, years.

The company turnover was 27

million Euros, which makes for

a solid base. The time had come

for the next change of ownership.

Quantum Design had turned into

L.O.T.‘s largest and most important

supplier. Revenues were generated

not only from sales but also from

service. A takeover of the L.O.T.

group by Quantum Design had

EUROPE

great advantages for both parties,

so contracts were soon signed. Since

then, all L.O.T. offices have been

consolidated under Quantum Design

Europe.

A company takeover and name

change at the same time seemed

a little too risky, so the owners decided

to keep the old name for an

intermediate time. In 2012, L.O.T.

turned into LOT-QuantumDesign

to reflect the merger. In 2019, we

finally changed the name to Quantum

Design and gave our logo, corporate

identity and website a fresh

makeover. Today, the Quantum

Design Europe Group is a member

of the globally active Quantum

Design International (QDI). This

makes us part of the first global

distribution network with offices

in virtually every major country in

the world.

Distribution 2020

A look at the history of our company

reveals how we have developed

from the beginnings until today. It

also demonstrates that our business

model works well. However, it

provides only limited insight into

the essence, the DNA, of our company.

6

Through the years, we have experienced

many changes, some of

them quite radical. There are smaller,

rather unspectacular developments,

such as those from telex

to fax, but also big and profound

ones, like the invention of mobile

phones and the internet and major

changes in the way we live and

work through digitalization and

globalization. The way we communicate

today, the speed with

which things change, could hardly

be imagined in the 70s. Obviously,

this has also had an impact on

technical sales. In my opinion, the

biggest difference compared to the

past is the increased transparency.

For many years, a customer was

considered the „property“ of the

distributor. As a result, distributors

revealed no information on their

customers to the manufacturer.

They were too frightened that the

supplier would serve the customers

directly. Communication with manufacturers

and customers had to

be carried out by the distributor

only. All business activities were

very much targeted towards sales,

and customer satisfaction was not

(yet) the focus. In the end, it didn‘t

matter what customers ordered as

long as they chose something from

our product range. This attitude

was not very customer-friendly

and there is no room for it in a modern

sales organization.

Modern distribution, let‘s call it

Sales 2.0, works by different standards.

Transparency has taken on

a new significance in times of the

internet and the constant availability

of information. Distributor

and manufacturer work closely

together to find the best possible

solution for the customer. This

works well if the manufacturer

knows and understands the customer

and his application. At the

same time, it means that an inquiry

or project requires closer attention

and more resources. Our goal

is not to offer as many products

as possible, but the right products.

But what are the right products? In

the end, it is the market, or rather

the customers, who make this decision.

For only for the right product

will customers be willing to spend

money. As a distribution company,

we have the choice: Either we offer

as many products as possible or we

Page 7

About us

can keep the number of products

small and instead provide the optimum

support.

We have decided to go the second

way and put quality before quantity.

Every day we strive to remain faithful

to this ideal. The satisfaction of

our customers before, during, and

after conclusion of the contract, is

our highest quality objective. Today,

the Quantum Design Europe

Group consists of 120 employees in

20 European countries. Our sales

and service staff come to us with a

sound scientific or technical education

and speak the language of

our customers. They are supported

by dedicated employees in the

back office providing order processing,

marketing, IT, accounting and

logistics. A great part of our colleagues

has been with us for many

years. As a result, our understand

each other almost blindly. At the

same time, the size of our company

is so that the contribution of each

individual employee to the overall

result is clearly visible. A product

mix of established and new, highly

innovative products makes us a

sought-after contact for scientists.

These in turn benefit from the

many years of market knowledge

and individual and independent

advice we provide. Of course, sometimes

even we don’t have the right

product. In this case, we are happy

to recommend other solutions.

The first 50 years of our company

history have always been exciting,

stimulating and challenging. We

optimistically look forward to the

next 50 years. The QD Group is very

well positioned not only in Europe

but globally. We have great employees

and an extremely exciting

product range, from long-established

manufacturers to innovative

start-ups.

Ultimately, feedback from you –

our customers – shows us time

and again that we are on the right

track.

About us

Congratulations from all at

Quorum. Since the foundation of

Quorum Technologies in 2001, Germany

has always been extremely

important and successful for our

business. With the large and influential

electron microscopy market in

Germany, Quorum has always needed

the highest quality distribution

network for the region.

When Quorum’s long-term partner

in Germany, Jost Gabler of Gala Instrumente,

decided to retire and sell

his business in 2014, we could not

have hoped for a better outcome.

We immediately knew that Jurgen

Schlutter and his team would be the

right partners for Quorum. In the

last six years we have enjoyed a great

relationship with the team at Quantum

Design who have ensured that

the Quorum business in Germany

has continued to prosper.

Quorum puts great importance in

having knowledgeable, high calibre

personnel to promote and support

our products. We are delighted to

have Quantum Design represent us

in this important market and are

always confident of the support

they offer to Quorum customers.

Although Quorum have only worked

with Quantum Design for a short

period, it is easy to understand why

they have had such a successful business

for the past 50 years. Quantum

Design are a great team of high-quality

dedicated professionals doing a

great job for our customers.

Professional education and teambuilding

in English with fun factor

Quantum Design also offers trainings

and team development to its

employees.

In 2018 – long before the coronavirus

has entered our lives, as you

can see on the happy pictures – we

were in the beautiful Bergstrasse region

for teambuilding. The fact that

none of us keep a distance clearly

shows how close our cooperation

normally is. Everyone is laughing,

thinking and studying something.

To be successful in our work, we

need both, a good command of English,

and a sound intercultural understanding.

Therefore, part of the

event was led by a British moderator.

Participants held presentations

in English, and most of all – we all

laughed about lots of typical English

humor. Much was talked about

„self-development“: „You can lead

a horse to the water but you can‘t

make it drink.“

And there was more:

During a Sherlock Holmes story

event, we had to work as a team to

complete tasks, solve puzzles and

pick locks – An abundance of impulses

for improving cooperation.

Congratulations on your 50 th Anniversary

– a great achievement and

we look forward to working with you

for many years to come!

Thank you, Quantum Design – enjoy

your celebration when it arrives!

About us

In the evening, things slowed down a

bit. Our English presenter had prepared

a quiz that was quite a challenge

and made not just a few brains twist.

The feeling of camaraderie that was

created in the process is still present

today.

We hope that we will soon be able

to experience this kind of teambuilding

again.

If you have already taken part in a

About us

Quantum Design Europe – Who we are

and since when

The European idea became popular

in our company a long time ago. QD

(at that time still LOT) had realized

in the seventieth that international

suppliers liked it very much if their

products were distributed all over

Europe – and not only in the German

speaking countries.

European chronicle:

Austria was traditionally taken care

of from Darmstadt.

In 1977, the Swiss office started as a

freelance, one-man business. In 1989,

Patricia Reinecke joined the company.

She says: „I started in what was

then called the LOT Group and have

experienced many changes since

then. We started with two people,

grew to seven and returned to two

people in 2013. I enjoy my work in

this dynamic company ...“ Almost since

then Julien Dumouchel is in charge

„I started fifteen years ago, and

I am still here and happy to assist

customers and colleagues… Coming

from the sea (Le Havre, Normandie), I

have always been attracted by mountains.“

Four children crown his life.

The French office was founded in

1985, and since 1990 QD France has

been an independent office with ten

employees. It is managed by the dual

leadership of Lionel Sudrie and Nicolas

Tcherbak. Some of our French

employees have also been with us

for a long time: Isabelle Soares, who

is responsible for logistics, has been

working with us since 1987, and Sakina

Chetouane, who joined us in 1985,

is responsible for the sales administration.

In 1989, the Italian branch was founded.

The Italian office has grown

continuously and now has 11 employees.

Since 1991, the Italian office

has been an independent subsidiary.

It is managed by Diego Vitaglione,

who joined us in 2000 as sales engineer.

In 1990, a subsidiary in the United

Kingdom was founded. LOT UK has

completed a pre-Brexit and left the

former LOT group in 2017 to become

more independent. However, they still

belong to the large Quantum Design

family.

In 2003, a „Nordic“ sales office was installed

in the north of Europe to cover

Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.

Four years later, Staffan Eriksson joined

us to take over the office. He has a

young family and loves the beautiful

Swedish outdoors.

In 2005, our BeNeLux office was established.

It has been run by our Belgian

colleague Stephane Struyve since

2011. Stephane is a “bon vivant” in the

best sense of the word – He not only

loves fine food and modern interiors

but also to work hard. He lives in Grimbergen

(near Brussels) with his family,

including three teenage daughters.

We’ve been having two offices in Poland

since 2006. This was when Dr.

Agnieszka Kowalczyk started working

for us, not long after she had completed

her doctorate. She represents

the majority of our product range. In

Chorzow, where she lives with her family,

she can „go hiking, trekking and

cycling, but also attend interesting

pop and rock concerts.” The second Polish

office underwent a generational

change. Since 2017, Piotr Dluzewski

has continued his father‘s work. He

loves the mountains and just recently

became a father too. „Apart from trekking,

I love skiing (my first job ever

was as a ski instructor), sailing on the

Masurian Lakes and basketball.“

Since 2008, Xavier Boira has been responsible

for the QD office on the Iberian

Peninsula, based near Barcelona.

Besides his family – he has an 8 year

old daughter – he enjoys very much to

read and listen to music. Furthermore,

he is a real supporter of automobile

and motorcycle sports.

Partnering with QD Europe has

allowed us to connect with and

serve the European research community

in a way that aligns with

our core company values. Our

local reps have added a layer of

application expertise to the overall

customer experience, helping

us to provide technical solutions

that accelerate end-user productivity.

We really admire the role QD

has played in helping to advance

scientific discoveries worldwide

over the last 50 years. We are excited

to continue our partnership in

pursuit of this shared passion!

The Romanian office was set up in

2008 and Octavian Buiu has been with

our company since then. He lives in

Bucharest, is an enthusiastic scientist,

and also loves photography.

Also since 2017, Cecilia Steinbach has

continued her father‘s work in Hungary.

„My father started working with

LOT more than 15 years ago. I started

working in the company in 2017 after

I obtained my doctorate in physics“

and about her private life „I live in Budapest

with my husband and my three

little sons. In my spare time... oh, normally

I don‘t have any free time, but

when I do, I like to go hiking, work in

the garden, sew and do DIY projects“.

Our cooperation and representation

in Tchechia an Slovakia started in

1997. They then sold our light sources,

spectrographs and detection cameras.

Today, Martin Klecka and his cheerful

team – which has grown rapidly and

very successfully – offer the complete

Quantum Design product range

in Czech and Slovac republic. „As the

business raised over the last 10 years,

we have added service technicians

to the team to be able to support our

customers not only in the selection of

About us

the right device but also in providing

technical advice, training, and service.“

We also have two agencies in Turkey:

In 2008, Vural Köksal started working

with LOT. „Today I am responsible for

general sales with the exception of

the magnetics product line. ... In my

very limited free time I go hiking. I

also have a small workshop for repairing

old cars, as a hobby.“ In 2012, a

second sales agency was established

where Yuksel Ozkan is offering our

products since 2018. He is our latest

addition to the European family. Since

graduating from university, he has

been working mainly with cryogenic

equipment and magnetic properties

measurement systems. As a technical

support engineer he also supports

academics in the selection of equipment

for specific applications. Apart

from his job with QD, „my biggest and

best job is to spend time with my little

daughter“.

And last not least over all the decades

we had local representatives first in

the UDSSR and today in Russia. Our

colleagues Radmir Khasaya, Yury Khomich

and Yuri Zheleznov represent

QD in that far corner of the world.

Quantum Design Europe focuses on

individuality and high standards in

customer consultation and service.

For us, these are the basics of our European

future.

Marlene Fontan

My relationship with the Quantum

Design non USA operations spans

40 years. Through a number of different

company names for both of

us, from Oriel, to LOT, to QD, from

Oriel, to Zygo to now ILT, working

with them for so long has been a

pleasure. The entire organization

continually challenges you to bring

the best possible products and

services to their customers. Their

technical expertise, customer and

market knowledge, and dedication

to doing things the right way has

made working with this organization

an exceptional experience.

I would like to offer my sincere

congratulations to the QD team for

their excellent work and continues

success.

About us

The confusion

It‘s 2009 and I, a young graduate

just back from my first job in Asia,

am starting my new job at Quantum

Design Europe, then called

LOT-Oriel. Traveling has always

been my thing and so I was looking

forward to the first business

trip to our new supplier in the USA.

At least initially. Sunday morning,

I take the middle seat on a plane.

A man with baroque forms in a

green Hawaiian shirt heads down

the aisle towards the seat next to

me. A tenacious struggle begins

between the groaning side rests

of the seat and his overflowing

corpulence. My neighbor wins

the fight and comfortably lays his

arms on the cushion that arches

over the back of my seat. „We will

understand each other, won‘t we?“

he asks me somewhat embarrassed.

Well then. You cannot choose

with what abundance nature blesses

you. I spend a rather restless

flight and my neighbor sure notices

my relief when we land.

I find a taxi and give the driver the

address. He looks at me puzzled.

I start feeling uncomfortable. I

learn that the address is in Bend,

but that I am in North Bend at the

moment. Bend is 300 miles south.

Ouch. I guess the travel agent booked

the wrong flight. Car rental is

not an option since I didn’t bring

my license. The cab driver says

he will give me a good price. I go

through my options and come

to the conclusion that a taxi ride

to Bend is not more expensive

than another flight and a cancelled

overnight stay, and this way

I get to the supplier on time. The

taxi driver is thrilled. But first he

wants to stop by his house again

to get some warm jackets. Besides,

he believes we need something

to eat and drink. We have to

go through an Indian reservation

and through the mountains. The

car’s heating supposedly does not

work so well. The driver is in a

good mood, I am not. On the way,

he tells my story to his colleagues

in the control centre, which

they acknowledge with cheerful

laughter. From now on, everything

goes smoothly and I arrive late at

night at the hotel. The fun of traveling

hasn‘t been taken away from

me until today, but I‘m quite happy

that since then I haven‘t had to

explain a $350 taxi bill to my boss

again.

About us

50 Years − Letter from Woollam

Dear Friends at Quantum Design Europe:

Congratulations on reaching 50 years

of business in 2020. Let’s put this

in perspective. I was born the same

year your business was started, and

I am sure many of your colleagues

were not born yet. In the US, Richard

Nixon was president, gasoline was

36¢/gallon and Simon & Garfunkel

were singing Bridge Over Troubled

Water.

When I joined the Woollam Company

in 1995, LOT-Oriel was already celebrating

25 years of business and was

our exclusive distributor for Europe.

Our companies were ideally matched.

Spectroscopic ellipsometry is

a complex instrument that requires

a deep understanding to properly

use. LOT-Oriel shared a similar philosophy

to John Woollam – when a

customer calls to purchase an ellipsometer,

they don’t want to talk to

a salesperson. They want to talk to

someone that knows the answers,

not someone that has to “ask an engineer”.

Many sales companies rely

on having their principals answer

the difficult questions. This has never

been the case in our relationship

with LOT, where your sales and service

persons were experts in the area.

In fact, I have had many an occasion

where I learned from LOT just as

much as they learned from me.

I first came to Europe and met the

staff at LOT in 1997 during the annual

Ellipsometry Seminar in Darmstadt,

Germany. This was my first

visit to Europe and I found it almost

magical. The LOT seminars have

withstood the test of time. We continue

to hold annual seminars and

short courses around the world that

were modeled upon those original

events. LOT has always been good about

considering the best approach to

inform their customers on the latest

technology and applications. The

seminars were focused on solving

problems and I still recall my anxiety

of analyzing customer samples in

front of a crowd (it was a bit like walking

a tight rope). I met many great

researchers at those seminars over

the years who have gone on to author

books on ellipsometry, become

Professors with large groups of great

students, and even become lifelong

friends.

Another similarity between the Woollam

Company and LOT is our loyalty

both to business partners and our

employees. Most of the people I met

at LOT in the late 1990s either still

work for LOT or have retired. When

I consider the “new faces”, they have

been with LOT/QD for nearly a decade.

It is great to work with people you

know and trust for so many years,

leading to true lifelong friendships.

When I first met Thomas Wagner in

1997, I could never suspect that we

would vacation together along with

other colleagues from Woollam –

whether it was canoeing down a

river in Nebraska, hiking the Rocky

Mountains, or watching Thomas

rock-climb up El Capitan in Yosemite

National Park.

Please accept my sincerest congratulations

on 50 years of business! If

you continue the same approach to

helping your customers in a sincere

manner, you may just make it to

100!!!

Sincerely,

James N. Hilfiker

Director of Sales, J.A. Woollam Co.

About us

Electron microscopy in numbers

Half a century of Oriel/LOT/QD

and many years of electron microscopy

– Let’s look at the figures.

In 2007 we started selling desktop

electron microscopes. Carsten

Pape and later his colleagues

Dominic Vogt, Jan Kretschmer,

Andreas Bergner, Anne Kast, and

others, wanted to bring scanning

electron microscopy to the streets.

For this purpose, Carsten Pape

initiated the first Electron Microscopy

Roadshow in 2009. The idea

was to give as many interested parties

as possible the opportunity to

test an electron microscope “in

situ”. This meant travelling to up

to 10 cities in 10 days, interrupted

only by 48 hours of weekend recreation

- A road trip through Germany

from Darmstadt via Cologne

to Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig,

Munich, Stuttgart and many

other cities. About 2000 km of driving

distance accrued with each

Roadshow. We organized about 20

Roadshows in more than 10 years.

Which means: 200 times „Welcome

to our Roadshow“, „Your room is

free, here is your key“ at a hotel

reception desk, and last but not

least: more than 200 times: „Which

of you brought the samples?“. Not

to forget the countless times of

„end of traffic jam ahead“...

All in all, 80000 kilometers were

driven with two cars loaded to the

brim – we say, that‘s a lot!

Speaking of “loaded to the brim”:

Did you know that a desktop electron

microscope weighs up to

75 kg? Not much for an SEM, but

a lot for a lone salesman (or woman)

who had to carry it 40 steps

up the stairs into the booked conference

room of a Berlin hotel,

because the elevator was broken...

After the SEM, there were sputter

coaters, plasma cleaners, critical

point dryers, pumps, roll-ups, display

walls, brochure boxes, toolboxes

and suitcases waiting to be

carried up, too.... In total, half a ton

of equipment was moved from the

cars to the hotel and back the next

day. Needless to say that our sales

people have no desire to overcrowd

the local gyms...

In the course of more than a decade,

we have been able to meet

about 2000 people this way and

are still in contact with many of

them. We were happy enough to

welcome many of them several

From the start Moxtek’s association

with Quantum Design they’ve

proven over and over again to be

a quality organization. In addition

to the executive team being

responsive and committed, the sales

staff consists of the most knowledgeable

and hardworking people

I’ve ever had the pleasure to work

with and the administrative group

is friendly, accurate and efficient.

Moxtek has benefited immensely

from our relationship with Quantum

Design and we look forward to

our mutual success as we continue

to grow in the future.

times. Some of them had even become

regular guests. By the way:

2000 people also means about

6000 sandwiches, which the hotel

kitchens prepared for us.

Through the years, we have received

a lot of encouragement, and

also constructive criticism. We are

grateful and happy to have been

in contact with you in all parts of

Germany and hope you feel the

same way. Several hundred Desktop

REMs are distributed all over

the country, and most of the sales

contacts started by getting to

know each other on one of our

Roadshows.

In 2021, we definitely want to continue

our Roadshow, if times permit.

We look forward to seeing you

there!
