Orientation 2020

Hey, let’s talk

You’ve researched, visited, discussed, applied, and

finally decided. But there are still a lot of details about

college life that you’ll want your entire family to be on

the same page about.

Here are a few conversation starters as you figure out

how to support your student:

Academics

What are “good grades” or “bad grades?”

What does “good attendance” mean?

How many courses should be taken at a time?

What should the balance be between classwork and

non-academic activities be?

Communication and visits

How often should your student come home, and who

should pay for the travel?

How often should you visit campus?

Who calls/emails/Skypes whom, and when?

Life during breaks

Where will your student stay?

What responsibilities will your student have

around the house?

Is there a curfew?

How much time should be spent with friends vs. family?

Finances

Who pays for what?

Should your student have a job?

How many hours per week?

Who is responsible for watching deadlines and filling

out college paperwork? (Hint: It’s the student!)

Counseling & Wellness Center

How we work:

The Counseling & Wellness Center

(CWC) addresses mental health,

emotional, or interpersonal concerns

that might get in the way of your

student’s progress and well-being at

CCAD. We support students as they

learn how to think, do, and thrive,

so they can focus less on problems

and more on becoming the amazing

artist, designer, and human they are

here to be.

Who we are:

The CWC team is made up of mental

health therapists who are able to

diagnose and treat mental and

emotional health concerns.

When & where to see us:

CWC is open Monday through Friday,

9 a.m.–5 p.m.

What we do:

• Individual counseling

• Group counseling

• Crisis intervention

• Collaboration with hospitals and

outside providers

• Consultation for students who are

worried about others

• Wellness education and

prevention programs

• Sexual and relationship violence

services and advocacy referrals

• Yoga and meditation class

• Referals to outside therapists

for certain specialized services,

higher levels of care, or if CWC

cannot accommendate all

students requesting services.

CWC services are confidential

and free.

Urgent walk-in hour available fall and

spring semesters Monday through

Friday, 11 a.m.–noon.

Located on the first floor of Crane in

the Student Affairs Hallway.

Contact us at my.ccad.edu/counseling

or call 614.222.4000.

22

Orientation 2020

What students say:

“The way CWC handles their clients

and the environment provided for

students there are so relaxing. It’s a

space to get away from the world for

a bit and focus on yourself, and get

in touch with what’s bothering you.

As humans we don’t take time out of

our day to genuinely reflect and face

problems head on, which is why a lot

of us find it uncomfortable to do so.

I think CWC handles situations like

these really well and gives us tools to

face our inner workings to the best of

our ability.”

Orientation 2020

Living on campus

Your student will feel right at home and at

the center of our community in our residence

halls. CCAD is dedicated to its first-year

residency requirement, which has been

proven to enhance students’ success and

foster friendships on campus. All new

students must live in the residence halls

during their first year of enrolment unless

they qualify for an exemption. Students

must complete an online housing application

or request exemption at

my.ccad.edu/housing.

The majority of our incoming students live

in the 230-bed Schottenstein Residence

Hall, which we lovingly call Schott. The best

part about living in Schott is how strong our

community is here. Students are just steps

away from classes, studios, workshops, and

labs. Design Square Apartments primarily

houses upper-level students.

Housing info

Housing applications, timeline of placement

and move-in, exemption requests, roommate

requests, hall and room details, and the

policies handbook are available at

my.ccad.edu/housing.

Residence Life Staff.

The residential experience at CCAD

is overseen by two professional staff

members and 13 Resident Advisors

(RAs). The role of the RA is to make

connections and to ensure the safety

and security of all residents. RAs

provide educational, social, personal,

and professional assistance and

appropriate referrals as needed.

Student Engagement & Inclusion

Student Programming Board (SPB)

Columbus College of Art & Design’s Student Programming Board is an

organization dedicated to bringing fun and exciting events, educational

seminars, and social opportunities to the CCAD campus. By offering these

opportunities, SPB hopes to build a better community and be a better source

for making students’ voices heard on campus.

Student Government Association (SGA)

Student Government membership is an elected and important leadership

position on campus. The members of SGA have the ability to effect change on

campus and address the issues and concerns of the student body as a whole.

Student Government Association is also responsible for allocating a yearly

budget to all registered student organizations.

A list of current student organizations can be found on my.ccad.edu.

Contact us at studentengagement@ccad.edu

or call 614.222.6175.

Everyone belongs here

CCAD defines diversity as a collection of

differences in human expressions, life

experiences, and personal characteristics

present among individuals and groups.

These elements, in sum and in part, enrich

our campus community and the larger world.

The Diversity & Inclusion Office at CCAD

aims to serve underrepresented populations

on campus and bring opportunities to

educate both students and staff/faculty

on equity and inclusion.

Events and programs hosted by this

office include:

• Engagement & Inclusion Retreat

Student organizations sponsored

by Diversity & Inclusion include:

• Black Student Leadership Association

• Queer Alliance

• International Student Association

At CCAD, students have a wide range of opportunities to get

real-world experience in their majors. Off-campus study can be

a critical component of these experiences—and new programs

are being developed every semester.

The most important point: It takes time to plan for these, so start

thinking about it when your student is in their first year. Encourage

your student to attend information sessions and work with Off-

Campus Programs staff to develop their own off–campus study

plan. Don’t wait! 33

33

Orientation 2020

Want a successful commuter?

Make sure your student is spending

time on campus outside of their

classes: Encourage them to

attend campus events and interact

frequently with faculty, staff, and

fellow students getting to campus.

As a CCAD student, they have many

options for a commute. All CCAD

students can ride Central Ohio

Transit Authority (COTA) buses free

with their student ID card. COTA

route maps are available in the

Crane Center lobby. A trip planner is

avalable at cota.com.

Columbus and CCAD are both

bicycle friendly. For basic rules

of the road, visit

publicservice.columbus.gov/bike.

To get in touch with the Columbus

cycling scene, visit yaybikes.com.

Bike racks are provided at Design

Square Apartments, Schottenstein

Residence Hall, and across campus.

We recommend a U-lock for bikes.

Also, consider removing the seat

or wheels when the bike is locked.

CCAD encourages carpooling and its

economic, environmental, and

social benefits.

If your student drives to class, first

collect information about parking

permits, rules, and regulations

from Safety & Security in the

Administration Building. This info is

also available online at

ccad.edu/safety-security-parking.

Regular or overnight parking

permits can be purchased at One-

Stop Student Services in the Loann

Crane Center and picked up in the

Administration Building.

By purchasing a permit, they are

guaranteed an available space in

one of our campus lots. They are

not guaranteed a space that is most

convenient. Lots fill up quickly on a

first-come, first-served basis, so

arrive early.

Traffic in Columbus can be hectic.

Students should figure out two

routes to campus and download a

traffic app for the latest updates.

34

Orientation 2020

Anyone who does not live in CCAD housing

(on campus or through a master lease

agreement) is considered a commuter.

About 40% of CCAD’s first-year students

are commuters, and the vast majority

of undergraduate students nationwide

commute to school.

Eating on campus

CCAD’s main dining facility is The Market, on the first floor of Design

Square Apartments. Commuter meal plans are available and offer

45 or 75 meals per semester, as well as flex dollars to be used at

The Cafe or Ampersand Emporium.

The Cafe is located in the Crane Center and accepts cash or credit.

It sells coffee, grab-and-go food and drink items, and more.

Ampersand Emporium is located on the first floor of Design Square

Apartments and sells healthy snacks and drinks and carries lots of

CCAD school swag.

Vending machines are available throughout campus. There are

many places to eat off campus. Students can also pack their own

food and snacks from home; it’s more convenient and

less expensive.
