Important Information about COVID-19

The City of Spring Lake Park Recreation Department’s

priority is the health and safety of our community and

employees. The Parks and Recreation Department is

actively monitoring and responding to the COVID-19

pandemic in partnership with the Minneapolis Department

of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.

Programs in this catalog are subject to change or

cancellation due to COVID-19.

To decrease the risk, all programs will include:

- Physical distancing of 6 feet or more.

- In person courses are subject to small group limitations.

- Enhanced cleaning practices will be performed.

- Cloth masks are required for everyone age 5 and up.

- Participants may be asked to complete a health

screening before a class, program, or event.

- In person classes may be switched to an online version.

You will be notified in a timely manner.

If you are not feeling well or have been exposed to

COVID19, please stay home.

Employment

Skating Rink / Warming House Attendant

Looking for a fun winter job? We’re looking for you! Join

us as a warming house attendant. This is a temporary/

seasonal position that oversees patron activities at our

outdoor skating rinks and warming houses to ensure that

facilities are clean, orderly, maintained and safe. Flexible

and part-time hours available from December - February.

Apply in-person at the City of Spring Lark Park Recreation

Department. Applications are due December 1. Ages 18+.

Enrichment & Workshop Instructors

Do you have a special skill or knowledge? Share it with

us! We’re always looking for new and fun classes and

workshops to offer. Hours and dates are very flexible. Pay

rate is $10 - $25/hr depending on experience and skills.

Mike Lynch Starwatch Party

Tuesday, December 8

Family Activities

Join us for an incredible evening of watching the great celestial show in the skies over Spring Lake Park! We’ll have

giant telescopes aimed at Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Mars is the closest it’ll be to Earth until 2035! We’ll also view star

clusters, galaxies, and more. Get to know constellations like The Big Bear, Cygnus the Swan, and Orion the Hunter.

Learn about the great stories behind the constellations. This class will take place outside at Spring Lake Park City Hall.

Mike Lynch is a retired WCCO meteorologist and has been hosting star watch parties and teaching astronomy classes

since 1972. He also writes a weekly stargazing column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He is the author of the book

“Stars, a Month by Month Tour of the Constellations.” Mike’s books will be available for purchase at a discount. Super

cool glow-in-the-dark star shirts will also be available for sale. Register now -- this experience fills up very quickly!!

Music in the Park - Saturday, September 12

Spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying live music from

“The Michael Handler Project” at Lakeside Lions Park.

The band plays a variety of cover songs ranging from

pop, rock, country, folk and more as a solo, duo or trio

act. The Spring Lake Park Lions will be providing food

and beer for purchase. Music is from 1:00pm - 3:00pm,

and concessions are from 12:00pm - 4:00pm

QC Dance Studio Classes

The Spring Lake Park Recreation Department is happy to partner with QC Dance Studio! QC Dance offers fun and

engaging dance programs and theme-based movement parties for kids of all ages. Established in 1970, QC Dance is

the Blaine area’s longest running dance studio! Each of the single-day classes listed here will be offered both in

person at the QC Dance studio and virtually. If you choose to take a class virtually, please note that we will send you

Students will learn the latest styles of dance through body

isolations, funky-styled steps, and contemporary moves to

the latest “parent-approved” pop and hip-hop music.

Mommy & Me / Parent & Tot

A delightful introduction to the art of dance with ballet

basics, creative movement, fun with props, and tumbling, all

in a professional dance setting. Please wear a leotard or

comfortable stretchy attire and ballet slippers. This class is for

kids who are okay being away from mom or dad. Cost: $50/

Youth Enrichment

Karate

This 8-week karate program is designed to enhance the student's self-esteem

and confidence while increasing self-discipline and personal safety. Basic karate

moves and self-defense combinations are taught by black belt instructor Norm

Rolando. Optional uniforms are $30.00. Location: This class is held at SLP High

School Kenneth Hall MP Room (Enter door #33) Ages: 7 and up Fee: $48/child

Red Cross Babysitters Class

This one day course is offered to participants who wish to learn child care

skills. Our certified Red Cross Instructor Allison Curtis will teach students basic

childcare including child development, supervision, accident prevention,

emergency response, feeding, infant care, and some basic first aid skills. Bring

a peanut-free bag lunch. The class includes instruction, certification, and take

home materials. This class will be held at Spring Lake Park City Hall.

KidCreate: Halloween Craft Party

What’s the best part about Halloween? The candy, of course! We’ll create a

spooky graveyard scene out of tons of “sweet” art supplies including some

Halloween candy favorites like candy corn. This is a creative class that

includes both guided instruction and the ability for kids to be creative! The

kids are welcome to wear their costumes to class. Please pack a nut free

snack and drink. This class will be held at the City of Spring Lake Park City Hall.

KidCreate: Holiday Ornament Party

There’s so much to love about the holiday season, and kids especially love

creating keepsakes and trinkets to share and enjoy for years to come! In this

Holiday Ornament Making party, you will join your child or children in creating

some fun, festive, and unique holiday ornaments! We will set up 4 stations,

each with a different ornament project. Children must be accompanied by a

caregiver. This class will be held at the City of Spring Lake Park City Hall.

KidCreate: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, had a very shiny nose… And it you ever

saw it, you might even say it glows!” Who’s the most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph of course! Kids will love this holiday-themed KidCreate class where

they get to make their own little Rudolph. Kids will use Model Magic® clay to

create this adorable reindeer, red nose and all. Please pack a nut free snack

and drink. This class will be held at the City of Spring Lake Park City Hall.

Conquer Ninja Gym

Youth Enrichment

Have you ever wanted to jump, swing, and climb like a ninja? Well here’s your

chance! Join us at Conquer Ninja Gym, where participants will be supervised

by our Youth Program Leaders. Wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothes to

move around in. Please bring a nut-free snack. Every child attending will need

an online form completed in order to participate. This form is located here:

Snapology: Robopets

In this fun workshop, participants will build cool “pets” as they learn all about

engineering and movement. Children will begin to explore the world of

robotics as they build simple animal models. They will discover how gears,

wheels, and axles create movement while building robotic dogs, frogs, and

other animals. Your child will learn a new creative and educational way to

make cool stuff with their friends! Location: Class is held at Spring Lake Park

Snapology: Pokemania

In Snapology’s Pokémania workshop, students will explore the Pokémon world

and practice their Pokémon training skills! They will create their own training

gyms, unique battles, and even their very own generation of

Pokémon. Your student will also explore some real-world science as they

examine the habitats, characteristics, and needs of different Pokémon. Kids

can build, engineer, and understand ‘em all! Location: Class is held at Spring

Snapology: Amusement Parks

We bet your child loves going to amusement parks and riding all of the roller

coasters, but have they ever thought about the science that goes into building

and designing the rides? In Snapology’s Amusement Park Engineering

workshop, students will become engineers of their own amusement park rides.

They will learn the core physics and engineering concepts used to make a ride

thrilling. Location: This class will be held at the Spring Lake Park City Hall.

Snapology: Ninja Mania

We’re glad you’re here, because Sensei Wu needs your child to save Ninjago

City from evil! In this workshop, your student will work on designing new

dojos, creating training supplies, and perfecting their ninja abilities. They’ll

train to become more focused, controlled, and effective ninjas, and they’ll

even create their very own dragon companion to help them save the day!

Basketball Clinic

Cheer America

This popular clinic will teach the fundamentals of

basketball. This program has been lead by high school

coaches Grant Guzy & Randy Eatherton for 21 years.

Emphasis is on learning to shoot, dribble, and pass.

Tennis shoes are required. Every child will receive a

T-Shirt. Register now, this class fills up! Grades K-3.

Cheer America is an exciting cheerleading program where

you will learn popular cheers, chants, choreographed

Enrichment Classes

Principles of Personal Finance

In this seminar, we will discuss how to get started down

the road to financial security. We will take a look at

some of the barriers people face with personal finances.

We will also discuss how to get your finances organized

to efficiently reach your goals. We do this by applying

the acronym: ACTION: “Assets, Create a budget,

Taxes, Inflation, Over time, and Now!” This class is

taught by Mike Pieper from North Star Financial.

Introduction to Photography

This 2-week course will introduce the fundamentals of

photography concepts including composition, camera

modes, the exposure triangle (f-stop/shutter speed/

review of participants work. Taught by Keith Bridges, a

Twin Cities professional photographer with over

25 years of photography experience.

These classes are taught by Cathi Weber. She started

NorthStar Genealogy to help others with their research

and to teach classes. She is President of the Anoka

Normal vs. Not Normal Aging

Am I having a “senior moment,” or is this

hearing loss affects those with possible dementia.

Pickleball Clinic

We are excited to offer an “Introduction to

Pickleball” clinic weekend! Players of all skill levels who

are looking to improve their skills and get involved in this

bounce rule, and other fundamentals important to the

game. Instruction will be geared towards singles-play.

Swing Dancing

Doug Ohman is a popular speaker, historian, and

entertaining storyteller. He is also an expert

photographer with deep roots in Minnesota. In each

workshop, Doug will share photos and stories as you

enjoy pastries, fruit, coffee, and fellowship. Each

All classes taught by Jeff Sandino, founder of “Flavors from the Home.” Jeff's love of food began at the historic Lincoln

Del Bakery & Deli. He sought formal training at L'Hotel Sofitel in Bloomington, MN and in Houston, Texas. His 40+ year

professional career has brought him to such spots as Buca Di Beppo, Figlio, Sunsets on the Bay, My Pie Pizza and the

Sunshine Factory. He's appeared on several cooking shows demonstrating his culinary wizardry. His passion is teaching

and demystifying the process of gourmet cooking. All classes are held at Spring Lake Park High School in Room

B108 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Fee: $31 per person. Park in the Able Street Parking Lot and enter Door 29 (the

room is down the hall on the left). Advanced registration is required for all classes. Registration closes 1 week prior to

the class date. Please note: while you will be involved in some cooking, this is a mostly a cooking demonstration.

Come celebrate the fall tradition German style with “sauerbraten” tender pot roast in a

tangy sweet and sour sauce, beef roulades stuffed with pickles, bacon and onion in red

wine sauce, pork ribs braised in sauerkraut, and “Weiner Schnitzel” chicken tenders

lightly breaded and sautéed with fresh squeezed lemon and herbs. You’ll learn to prepare

“spaetzle” (German pasta), potato pancakes with sour cream, “kartoffelklosse” (German

dumplings) and braised red cabbage. We’ll finish with a classic Black Forest cake.

Come join us in a celebration of the perfect pizza! First up is Stromboli stuffed with

chicken, broccoli, sundried tomatoes, Romano and boursin cheeses, and topped with a

zippy tomato sauce. Pies will include both BBQ and buffalo chicken, basil pesto,

margarita, Rueben style, pepperoni, sausage, and veggies. We'll pair our pies with pasta

Napoli style, simply prepared with Roma tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil, parmesan and

cheeses. We'll finish with pound cake, Italian custard, cherry preserves, and chocolate

Tex Mex Fiesta - Mon, November 9

We'll begin with "Empanadas,” pastries filled with beef, tomatoes, potatoes and herbs.

Flautas are next with chicken in a jalapeno/garlic paste and fried crisp in a corn tortillas.

We'll then prepare authentic Mexican-style corn prepared with lime aioli, cayenne pepper

and Cotija cheese. Fajitas follow with tender strips of marinated beef and chicken with

fresh sautéed bell peppers and onions wrapped in a warm tortilla shell. We’ll end with

fresh coconut custard in a wonderful nut crust, baked and served with crème fraȋche.

French Cuisine - Tues, December 1

Experience French tradition starting with a magical mixture of ground pork, chicken and

herbs served with cornichons, olives and crusty bread. This menu will feature tender

Cornish game hen, roasted then braised in a succulent burgundy and port wine sauce.

Accompaniments will include creamy potatoes au gratin, wild rice with sautéed bacon and

vegetables, and broccoli with seared peppers. We'll finish with a chocolate soufflé, with an

exceptional chocolaty goodness, drizzled with caramel raspberry sauce.

Women’s Fall Colors Kayak Trip

Join us for a leisurely fall day down the St. Croix River. No kayaking experience is necessary! Participants will

meet at Interstate Park near Taylors Falls. Transportation is not provided. You’ll need a Minnesota State Parks

pass for entry. The one-way trip begins below the falls and ends at the Osceola landing. Kayaks and life jackets

Gardens of Rice Creek Guided Tour

Spend the morning with a Spring Lake Park Recreation guide and your fellow garden enthusiasts on a guided tour of

local home garden called "The Gardens of Rice Creek." You will enjoy a tour of rock gardens, dwarf conifers, and a

rare plant nursery with over 30 rare and beautiful plants. Questions are encouraged. Growing hints, propagation, and

landscaping principles will be explained. You'll also have time to explore the rhododendron research gardens and

purchase plants or supplies for your own gardens as well. Bring cash, Visa, or a Mastercard. You must drive yourself

to the garden. Due to garden restrictions, space is limited to 15 participants. Registration deadline: September 11

of every single type of cookie, you will get to take home

Community Programs

“Adopt A Garden” Program

The Adopt a Garden program allows groups or

individuals to plant and care for a park garden within the

City of Spring Lake Park. With the guidance of our

Master Gardener, each volunteer will tend to the garden

as if it were their own. Volunteers will weed, prune,

plant, and water the garden throughout the year on a

regular basis. This is a one-year commitment.

Individuals, family members, or groups can adopt.

Skating Rinks

& Warming House

Able Park

Able park is located at 8200 Able Street. It has a skating

rink, a hockey rink, and a warming house. The warming

house will be open from December 26 - February 19,

weather permitting. Rinks are lit from dusk until 10:00pm.

Able Park Hours

Monday - Friday: 4:00pm - 9:00pm

Saturdays: Noon - 9:00pm Sundays: Noon - 6:00pm

Winter School Break Extended Hours: Noon - 9:00pm

Rental Skates: Able Park has a limited supply of skates

available for free rental. Bring your own socks. If you’d

like to donate your skates, bring them to SLP City Hall.

Terrace Park

Terrace Park is located at 79th Avenue & Terrace Road

and has a hockey rink with lights until 10:00pm. There is

not a warming house at Terrace Park.

Sanburnol Park

Sanburnol Park is located at 520 Sanburnol Drive and

has a general ice skating rink without lights. There is not

a warming house at Sanburnol Park.

Weather & Ice Maintenance

The ice at all of the parks is maintained as weather

permits. Warming houses are closed in extreme weather.

How do I register for a program?

In Person Registration

To register for a program in person, please visit our office at 1301 81st Avenue NE, Spring

Lake Park, anytime between 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday - Friday. We accept cash, check,

and credit cards. An “after hours” drop box is located in the City Hall foyer and is open 24/7.

Online registration

To register online, visit our website at slprec.org and click the “registration” tab. Payment is

due at time or registration. If you need help setting up an account, please give us a call.

Over the phone

Call us at 763-792-7201 anytime between 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, and we’ll

register you for the events you’d like to attend. We accept credit cards over the phone.

Via USPS Mail

To register via mail, please completely fill out the “Registration Form” on the next page and

mail it along with a check to: 1301 81st Avenue, Spring Lake Park, MN 55432.

Day Trip & Extended Tour Registration & Parking

Registration

To register for an Extended Tour, you must pay with cash or a check. Extended Tour credit card payments will

incur an additional 3% fee. For Extended Tours, your name will be added to the roster once we receive your

deposit. For Day Trips, payment is due within 72 hours of registration. For Day Trips, we accept cash, credit, or

checks. When registering by mail, please completely fill out the registration form and mail it along with your check.

Transportation & Parking

Unless otherwise noted, transportation for Extended Tours and Day Trips begins and ends at Spring Lake Park

City Hall at 1301 81st Avenue, Spring Lake Park, MN 55432. Some day trips do not include transportation; see the

event details to ensure you meet us at the correct location. For Extended Tours, you may park your car in the

“furthest away” spots in the City of Spring Lake Park City Hall parking lot.

Refund Policy

General Refund Information

If you cancel before the registration deadline, you will receive a 100% refund. After the registration deadline, we

cannot guarantee a refund. Unless otherwise noted, the registration deadline is 1 week prior to the program start

date. Absolutely no refunds will be given within 72 hours of the program start date. If Spring Lake Park Recreation

cancels a program or class for any reason, you will receive a 100% refund.

Extended Tour Refunds

Up until the registration deadline, Spring Lake Park will offer full refunds for Extended Tours if you choose to

cancel. After the registration deadline, you must file a claim with Travel Insured International. Spring Lake Park

purchases a Group Protection Plan from Travel Insured International for select Extended Tours; other Extended

Tours have an optional Trip Protection Plan that you can choose to purchase for yourself.

Day Trip Refunds

If you need to cancel your participation, please cancel by the registration deadline for a full refund. After the

registration deadline, there will be no refunds unless someone on the waitlist is able to take your place.
