HALEY PLAYS THIRD BASE AND IS A STRONG
ASSET FOR THE TEAM. AT THE PLATE, SHE
CARRIES A .441 AVERAGE AND SLUGS .824, TO
GO WITH 15 HITS AND SEVEN RBI. HER ON BASE
PERCENTAGE IS .559.
Bax Axe Hatchet, Haley Newland, Class of 2022, was looking
forward to following up her All-Conference freshman season,
with a strong showing this past spring. She spent winter, in
between basketball games, working with pitching coach Don
Cielinski to add some additional pitches to her repertoire. When
the season was canceled, Haley decided to continue working on
her skills in hopes of a summer travel season.
Haley played for the Huron County Thunder travel softball
team, and was able to compete in several tournaments this
summer. She played in 16 games, starting 11 of those on the
mound. Haley pitched 57 innings, had 41 earned runs, 22 strike
outs and an ERA of 4.32.
Her high school and summer coach, and father, Greg
Newland said “Haley was a workhorse on the mound this
summer. She has movement on her pitches that the hitters
don’t often get solid contact on the ball”. He also wanted to
acknowledge how important Bad Axe catcher Sydner Prill is to
Haley’s success. “You can’t talk about her on the mound without
giving a ton of credit to her catcher. Sydney is trusted to call the
game from behind the plate. Haley and Sydney make a great
tandem!”
In addition to softball, Haley participates in volleyball,
basketball, robotics and Interact. Haley was on the Girls’ Varsity
Basketball team that won districts for the first time in 40 years.
DURING THIS SUMMER, ANTHONY WAS ABLE
TO PITCH 4 COMPLETE GAMES. HE HAD AN ERA
OF 1.74, AVERAGED 6 STRIKE OUTS PER GAME,
WHILE ALLOWING 2 HITS AND 2 WALKS.
Laker stand out pitcher, Anthony Sheridon, Class of 2021, was
excited to both develop and showcase his skills during this past
spring baseball season. That opportunity was unfortunately taken
away, so he needed to look for any opportunity he could find this
summer to continue towards his dream of playing
college baseball.
Back in February, Anthony was able to take part in a showcase
sponsored by Under Armour, in Beverly Hills, Michigan. There
they produced a performance video for him, and some elite travel
baseball coaches evaluated him as well. That work out proved to
be important, because he was able to land a spot on the Saginaw
Means elite travel team.
Anthony’s coach at Lakers, Ron Dubs, told us “Anthony has
been playing baseball all summer in and out of state working
hard on his game. We have talked about the hard work it takes on
the field and off with weight lifting and conditioning a big part of
getting stronger, and he has been doing a real good job of this.
His love and passion for the game is what drives him and really
wants to develop to become a college player.”
After his senior year, Anthony is hoping to play baseball for
a university in Michigan while majoring in Psychology. He is
planning on spending the year working on developing himself
into the best pitcher that he can be so he can achieve his goals.
