HIGHLIGHTS
The Thumb Sportswriters Association was very excited
to be able to hold a unique, outdoor TSA All Star game with
our area basketball standout graduates. Thanks to Cass City
Parks, the athletes were able to be recognized, and get to
compete one more time. According to Paul Adams, head of
TSA, “Pulling off this year’s All-Thumb All-Star Games was
a total team effort by the Thumb Sportswriters Association.
Moving the games outside presented a unique set of
challenges. But our members stepped up to provide a safe
and fun environment for the seniors to have one final
basketball game. Also, I have to thank the village of Cass
City for the use of its
courts. We do look
forward to returning
the games to their
regular home in
Sandusky for 2021.
Huron County View Sports Editor, Paul Adams, started
looking for a way to recognize area spring sports
seniors as soon as we found out that the Spring seasons
would be canceled. Paul worked with Bad Axe Public
Schools to develop a “Senior Showcase” for Thumb
senior athletes to get together and compete one last time.
After the event, Paul stated “The 2020 Senior Showcase was
a one of a kind event and offered spring sports seniors one
final time to wear their high school uniform. The two days
couldn’t have gone any better. Nothing will ever replace
the loss of a senior season, but we hope this at least gave
these seniors a little bit of closure. None of this would have
been possible without the backing of Bad Axe
Superintendent Greg Newland and the administration
coming together for a common goal.”
Vassar Public Schools hosted the 3rd Annual Greater Thumb Conference
All-Star Baseball game, and added an All-Star softball game for the first
time. Jason Hahn was instrumental in coordinating the event this year and
afterwards said, “The opportunity to coach my guys one last time was very
special for me. This was a very close knit group of seniors and we had a
special bond. The last time I spoke to them theirfaces were filled with disappointment
and that’s not what I wanted my last memory of them to be. So
to them smiling and having fun one last time was awesome. It was an awesome
experience for all involved not just my guys. It felt like for those 2 hour
things were back to normal. We weren’t worrying about everything going on
in life, and just got to have
fun and be kids again, the
coaches included.”
We did manage to get to several softball/baseball tournaments around the state this summer. It was fun to
see some of our favorite people, and also to get to see the incredible people that worked hard to makethese
opportunities possible for area athletes while keeping kids safe. Huron County Thunder 16Uc oach, Greg Newland,
told us, “Having the HS season get canceled, the girls realized how much they appreciated playing the game and
it took on a special meaning that would not have normally been there. They all put in time in the off season with
their teams to prepare for a season that never came. This allowed them the opportunity to display their hard work
on the field that other girls did not get.”
