REIMAGININGK-12 PUBLICEDUCATION.
This has been a year or growth, refocus andreimagining for UrbEd. As a small, developingnonprofit, UrbEd works to focus on issues thataffect students in their everyday lives. This hasranged from emphasizing the importance ofstudent voice on a local and state level, how tokeep students healthy and safe at school andfinding ways to create tools to support youngpeople.As UrbEd sends off some of its high schoolstudents who are now off to college, the nonprofitcontinues to grow its network looking to engagenew students across Philadelphia. UrbEd hasparticipated in national coalitions to work withother youth-driven and education-focusedorganizations to keep up the momentum formore equitable schools in communities acrossthe country.The pandemic did not stop UrbEd fromadvocating for students, it pushed the team tothink outside the box on how to engage youngpeople and ways to make resources accessibleto them during this difficult time. Similarly, inthe midst of the Black Lives Matter Movement,UrbEd used its platform to create a brave spacefor all students as we continue to fight for safer,more diverse and inclusive school communities.We can’t just say his name, we must say herstoo.As this year comes to an end, UrbEd is excited toengage, support, and amplify the voices of youngpeople across the city to curate future leadersof this world. We must fight against injustices,advocate for womens rights, stand up for Blacklives and get in “good trouble”.Tamir D.
