Pittwater News News Nature, nurture at heart of new mural A group of local young creatives have been assisting multidisciplinary artist David Cragg to install a largescale mural on a wall at the back of 20 Bungan Street in Mona Vale. Midnight Dream is a colourful celebration of local flora and fauna and bush tucker plants. The artwork is part of Northern Beaches Council’s street art program and funded by a grant from the Crime Prevention Division of the Department of Communities and Justice. Council says the program “aims to make creativity visible and accessible in public places and this project aims to reduce the levels of graffiti and anti-social behaviour on the Northern Beaches”. When launching the Mona Vale mural project earlier this year Council wrote: “A high number of graffitirelated incidents occur in this area. Through engaging and upskilling local young people to help paint murals, Council aims to instil a sense of ownership and belonging to place.” RUKUS at the Newport Bowlo It was an end of an era when Newport’s RUKUS Café pulled down the shutters on its well-used space on Robertson Road on August 14 – but don’t fret, you’ll still be able to get your fatty burger fix, those all-too-pretty meals that almost look too good to eat and yummy coffee in the much greener surrounds at their new home at the Newport Bowling Club. Row pulls in donations Hundreds of rowers Australia-wide raised more than $120,000 in this year’s 24 Hour Row for mental health. After the success of the Avalon Beach 24 Hour Row over the past two years, the event expanded in 2020, with 18 Surf Life Saving Clubs, gyms and members of the Rowing Australia community signing on to row on the weekend of August 22-23 to raise money and awareness for mental health charities Gotcha4Life and One Eighty. The brainchild of one of the country’s top surf boat coaches Nathan Wellings and his wife Mel, the event began in 2018 after a tragic spate of youth suicides in the Northern Beaches area. All funds raised are shared between two mental health organisations who are making a difference through outreach and community programs with the aim of reducing suicide deaths. Local Northern Beaches youth mental health charity One Eighty is leading the way for peer-to-peer models of community support with a vision for future free of youth suicide through prevention and early intervention. training programs and products to build mental fitness across Australia. See ‘Red’ on Father’s Day Father’s Day is Sunday September 6 – shop local, get in early and give a gift that gives twice this year. The store manager of Newport’s favourite charity shop Gisele Hindhaugh, volunteers, local celebs and businesses have banded together giving their time, vouchers and products that Dad would love to raise funds for the good works of the Australian Red Cross in NSW. On Friday August 28, local author Michael Francis McDermott will be signing copies of his book In The Name of The Father and donating 50% of sales. On Saturday August 29, Sam and Cameron Bloom will be at the store signing copies of their book Penguin Bloom from 11am-1pm and donating $10 of each sale to Red Cross. There’ll be handmade Father’s Day cards for sale and great quality menswear priced at 50% off from 10am-3pm. Local businesses including Cocoa Bar, The Corner Store, Ma Baker, The Woods, Pizza Hut, BWS, Rukus, Le Petit Marche, Oven Lovin’ Pizza, Donna’s Barber Shop, Pony Rider, 4 Pines, plus the Kate Lush Band, Joy Yates, The Gallery Hairdressers, Harvest Lane and artist Judy Shalleh have generously contributed vouchers or products that will be sold in the shop at less than their retail value. And while all this is certain to draw a crowd, be assured Newport Red Cross Shop at 336B Barrenjoey Road is committed to keeping customers and staff COVID safe at all times.
