MODIFICATION REQUESTS
As a reminder, any exterior modification to your home (fence replacement,
new swimming pool, children’s playset… etc. as a few examples), needs
to be approved by the Grayson Lakes Architecture Review Committee
(ARC) prior to initiating the modification. For reference to guidelines
outlining Grayson Lakes standards, review Exbibit E of the Declaration
of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions for Grayson Lakes, commonly
referred to as our CCRs.
To begin the review process, submit a completed Architectural
Modification Request Form found on the Grayson Lakes Living
Website. Once completed, submit to Sandra@Crest-Management.
com. Submissions must be received 5 days prior to the date of the
regularly scheduled ARC meetings to be placed on that month’s agenda.
Submissions that are on the meeting agenda will be reviewed the night
of the meeting. All other submissions will be reviewed within 30 days of
confirmed receipt. The regularly scheduled ARC meetings are held on the
(2 nd ) Thursday of each month (Except December).
WOODEN FENCES
As referenced above, there are specific guidelines for making exterior
modifications to homes in our community. As the community ages there
are several items to be fixed, repaired and/or replaced. Prior to modifying
your fence please complete the Architectural Modification Request
Form and submit for approval. Note that specifically for wooden fences
within the community, the CCRs provide guidance. The items that create
confusion, are fence height and rot boards. It is acceptable to have a
rot board installed when replacing a wooden fence; however, the total
height of the fence must be 6 feet. Several replacements recently have
forgotten to trim pickets to account for rot board height, resulting in
fences that are out of compliance. An additional issue recently has been
the use of pine instead of cedar pickets.
ROOFING SHINGLES AND PLAY SETS
If you are one of the many residents that have chosen to replace
your existing roof or install a new child’s play set recently, you have
undoubtedly recognized that meeting the requirements specified in the
CCRs are no longer feasible through purchasing commercially available
products. Through the help a of handful of dedicated residents, the
existing CCRs on covering these topics have been modified to reflect
the current industry standards with the goal of allowing our residents
choices of readily available products on the market. Therefore, if you
were provided a copy of the CCRs when purchasing your home and are
referencing Exhibit E from that document, please consider referencing
the online version for the latest information.
FRONT YARD TREE REQUIREMENT
The Grayson Lakes CCRs require five (5) trees in each front yard. While this
requirement worked will as the community was maturing, we recognize
that while there is sufficient room in some yards, there is not in others.
Therefore, the Grayson Lakes Board of Directors, working closing with the
Architecture Review Committee, is looking to modify the CCRs to better
meet the needs of our residents while continuing to maintain aesthetic
requirements with variable frontage lengths of front yards. Our goal is to
have the new guidelines drafted before end of 2020. As a resident, if you
have any comments, suggestions or would like to provide your thoughts
on this matter, please forward those to Karen@Crest-Management.com
so they can be considered prior finalizing the document.
COVID-19 AND GRAYSON LAKES
Your GL Board of Directors continues to monitor guidance provided by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The Office of the
Governor of the State of Texas and the Fort Bend County Judge/Health
Department as we plan community meetings, assess use of amenities
and plan events. At the time this article was submitted for publication,
the amenities here in our community are open and available for use by
our residents and their guests. As advised by the Governor, the pool and
clubhouse occupancy 50% of the Fire Marshal stated capacity. In addition,
4
use of these amenities are only available to residents that have signed
the GL Waiver and have had their pool access cards reactivated. As most
of you recognize, guidance and requirements have changed frequently
through this pandemic, so please consult www.graysonlakesliving.com
for the most up to date information.
FENCE REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS
Thank you to John Jordan and the Adhoc Fence Committee for
preparing a plan for community fence replacement. This has been a
huge undertaking as Grayson Lakes has various types of fencing. The
Board would also like to thank Lanny Hitchcock for his time championing
the maintenance and replacement of metal fencing throughout the
community. Also, a big thank you to David Thomas for monitoring the
FenceCrete repair process on the weekends.
Fencing will continue to be repaired and / or replaced in the upcoming
years as the annual budget allows.
SAFETY CORNER
Please ensure that you always take the following steps to protect your property:
Lock all entrances to your residence and vehicles, including windows and doors
leading to the garage. • Park your vehicles in your garage if you can. • Secure all
valuables, including guns, laptops and tablets. If items can’t be secured, ensure
that the items are at least hidden from view, both from windows and doors
in your residence and in your vehicles. • Record the serial number and take
pictures if possible, of all valuables. • Set your alarm, even if you are in the house
and don’t intend to leave for a while. • Report any suspicious activity to the Ft.
Bend County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 281-341-4665.
HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is
not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand
back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover.
Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown covering
windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front?
Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint
peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion, it is easy to overlook things
we see every day. Make plans now to spruce up your property.
GRAYSON LAKES BOARD MEETINGS OPEN TO ALL
Meetings of the Grayson Lakes Board of Directors are held the third Wednesday
of every month except September. The meetings are held in the Grayson Lakes
Clubhouse and start at 6:30 PM. Residents wishing to observe need only show
up. Residents wishing to speak are asked to inform the Management Company at
Karen@crest-management.com requesting to be placed on the agenda. Please
do this no later than 8 days before the meeting since agendas are prepared a
week in advance. If you will indicate the nature of your business beforehand,
it will give the Management Company and your Board a chance to prepare for
questions that might come up. Please be advised, it is your Board’s practice to
limit initial comments from residents to 5 minutes, so plan accordingly.
FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who
is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals
and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to
avoid the animal. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the
dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In
addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabiesinfected
wildlife. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly
restrained please contact Ft. Bend County Animal Control - 281-342-1512
8 TIPS FOR STUDYING AT HOME EFFECTIVELY
1. TRY ACTIVE STUDYING: Active studying is
as simple as asking questions before, during
and after study time. Not only does this help
to give your study session direction, but it also
helps keep you on track and reflect on how to
improve for your next study session!
Questions to ask yourself before you study:
What am I about to learn?
What do I already know about this subject?
Questions to ask yourself while you study:
How does this information fit into a bigger
picture?
Do I understand what I have just read?
Can I paraphrase it?
Are there any key words or ideas that I need to
write down? Why are these words and ideas
important?
Questions to ask yourself after you study:
What can I take away from this study session?
What do I need to review or learn next time?
HOW TO STUDY AT HOME
(WITHOUT GETTING DISTRACTED)
Studying at home has its perks: it’s a comfortable, low-pressure environment. However, there
are a few reasons it can be difficult to study at home; with so many distractions, it’s easy to
procrastinate-when you do start, it’s easy to get off track.
At home, procrastination and distraction can prevent you from accomplishing what you
need to get done. Watching TV, taking a nap, scrolling through social media or other activities
(maybe even cleaning your room!), are big productivity killers that take you away from your
goal of studying for or completing that assignment.
Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to help you be more productive. Here are 8
ways to help you stay focused and get more done when studying at home.
2. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP: Students of all
ages should get at least eight hours of sleep
every school night. It’s the best way to ensure
that the brain is refreshed and ready to process
all of the information learned during the day. It
may be tempting to stay up late to cram, but it’s
more beneficial to get enough rest. A full night’s
sleep is especially important the night before a
test-a good night’s sleep makes you more alert
and improves memory for test material, leading
to better test results.
3. STUDY AT THE RIGHT TIME: Every student
has his or her own daily highs and lows. Some
people are night owls while some people
prefer the morning. Take advantage of the time of the day you feel most
productive and don’t try to force yourself to study when your brainpower
isn’t at its peak. Try to study when you are most alert, so you are able to
process and retain the information that you are studying.
4. HAVE A DESIGNATED STUDY AREA: Whether it’s the kitchen table or
the desk in your bedroom, create an area to study that is a designated
study zone. Try to reserve your bed for sleeping and avoid studying in it
(it can be all too easy to take a nap!). Most importantly, keep your study
space clean and organized so you can put more time into studying (and
less trying to find a pen that works).
5. EAT PROPERLY: Don’t forget to eat! Your body (and your brain) needs
fuel to help stay in top form. Plus, it’s difficult to focus when your stomach
is growling. Have healthy snacks while you study, but make sure they’re
prepared in advance so you don’t spend too much time away from your
work. More time away means more opportunity to be distracted!
6. CREATE A TIMETABLE: Creating a timetable helps organize your time,
schedules your breaks and is especially useful when you have multiple
subjects to study. Write your schedule down so you can remember it
and refer to it often. Set reasonable limits for how much time you spend
studying each day and break your study session up into manageable
chunks of time.
7. USE A TIMER: Use a timer to help keep track of time and to make sure
you stick to the timetable you created. Setting a timer helps keeps you
focused on the task at hand, committed to working until the timer goes
off and helps keep you on track to cover all the material you need to.
Above all else, it helps keep your break time effective and guilt-free
(because you’ve earned it!).
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR STUDY TIME
Although it seems convenient, studying at home can be difficultprocrastination
and distraction can happen easily. But with a little bit of
planning and organization, it can be an effective (and comfortable) place
to study. Try some of these tips for studying at home to help you stay
focused and more efficient with your study time.
NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS DAY -
SUNDAY AFTER LABOR DAY
Each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, grandchildren across
the country honor their grandparents. There is a special bond that
can only be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents.
Grandparents are full of hugs and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience,
love and guidance. National Grandparents Day gives grandchildren the
opportunity to show love and appreciation to their grandparents.
National Grandparents Day has its very own song. The National
Grandparents Day Council of Chula Vista, California announced in 2004
that A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill would be the official
song of the United States National Grandparents Day holiday. The Council
presented Prill with the National Songwriter’s Award in recognition of his
highly popular composition A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.
The forget-me-not is the official flower for National Grandparents Day.
National Grandparents Day is expected to grow in significance over the
next decade and beyond as the number of grandparents in the United
States rises from 65 million in 2011 to 80 million in 2020 as a result of the
baby boom. Show your appreciation for everything your grandparents
have done for you.
the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.The Walk will take
place on Saturday, September 26, 2020,The Katy/West Houston Walk
to End Alzheimer’s continues, but instead of hosting a large gathering,
the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging participants to walk as
individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across Katy,
West Houston, Fulshear, Richmond and surrounding areas.
Time-honored components of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are being
replicated. On walk day, an Opening Ceremony will feature local speakers
and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons
participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, all
delivered to participants’ smartphones, tablets and computers. A small
group of Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers will create the iconic
Promise Garden in a “view only” format on Walk day on commercial Blvd
along the original walk route to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s.
To enhance the participant experience leading up to the event and on
Walk day, new features are being added to the Walk to End Alzhemer’s
mobile app to create an opportunity for the community to connect.
Participants can use the app and new “Walk Mainstage’’ to track their
steps and distance, follow a virtual Walk path, manage their Facebook
fundraisers and access information and resources from the Association
and Walk sponsors to help individuals and families affected by the
disease. A new audio track is available to encourage participants along
the way and to congratulate them upon completion of their Walk.
There is no registration fee for participants. Sign up today as a team and
encourage your friends, family members, neighbors, book club, gym and
coworkers to join your team and start walking today!! There are many
incentives to raise funds but our main objective this year is to increase
participation in this growing community and increase awareness. For
