The The llama’s llama’s lament:
lament:
Gosh and golly time flies when you’re
chewing cud. At least that is what the cows
say. Finally autumn again, and for a
melancholic as I this is most agreeable news!
Yes, yes I know an exclamation mark; slightly
out of character but, I am in a good space.
Leaves are falling; nasty depressing weather
and all those insects will find their demise
nearing: this season is most acceptable.
Again new co-workers everywhere. How do
these humans keep track of the comings and
goings of these young ones? At least Katrin
has a long article which attempts at
Well, I hear another downpour: appalling
the summer of
the "Wings"
Do you know who the "Wings" are? Did you
know that the name comes from our account
at the Glenora Store?
Well, most of you know us, because we have
been in the "Big House" of Glenora Farm
forever. We are now Adola, Katrin, Lisa,
Samina, Andrew, Matthew, Jana, Faith,
Denise, Miriam and our youngest and
newest member Wenzel. Of course Annette
and the children are also in the "Wings" but
not under the Store account "Wings".
Anyway, we try to wing ourselves through
the week between the day program and our
wing life and have created a neat little
community within our bigger community.
Life is more vibrant and interesting with the
two new houses creating a real
neighbourhood atmosphere. Everybody
looks forward to Friday evenings at Helios
House, when we enjoy a movie and some
delicious goodies. Samina just loves
"George’s brownies".
Roos Roos’ Roos story:
story:
Canada, Vancouver Island, the other side of the
world. How would it be? I had no idea.
My welcome was warm. Literally and
Figuratively. It was mid summer and all flowers
in the Camphill garden were blooming. I went
in to the house and had my first meeting with
one of the companions: A tight hug from a
squinting, smiling woman. She talked
cheerfully to me, switching her language
between English and German. (Fortunately I
understood both.)
Shortly after that another companion made
plans to merry one of the caregivers.
Everybody laughed and I felt comfortable
immediately.
This was going to be my home for 4 months.
Not as a volunteer or co-worker, like most of
the young people here: I am an exchange
student. I am from Holland, wanted to learn
English and choose the Waldorf School on
Vancouver Island. The school found the host
family for me on this Camphill.
When I look through the window in the
living room, I see a beautiful lake and behind
the wooded hills. No more houses in that
direction. Our house is the last after the 2 km
driveway that belongs to the Camphill.
Whenever I want to, I can go for a tenminute-walk
to the main house for instance
to join the folk dancing or singing, or work in
the garden, watch the piggies, or laugh with
the companions and co-workers.
They are all nice and welcome every stranger
with the same kindness.
Canada, Vancouver Island, the other side of
the world. How is it? I know!
We are very happy to get eggs and honey
from Helios House, and that motivated
Katrin to start baking our own bread; it’s
nice not to have to buy much from the store.
Our new constellation of oldies and young
people gives a very special feeling and we
feel ready to face the winter. This group has
gone through the summer together, and it
was filled with a lot of joy and visits from
new and old friends. Our special guests
were of course Hans, Grete, Astrid and
Anna who just fitted in again as if they
never had been away. Lisa,Andrew and
Matthew are now determined to take Katrin
to Denmark next year, and are full of
fundraising plans. We had a number of
WWOOFers attached to our house (Marion,
Mira, Maarten), who were a big help and
each brought something very special to the
community.
Denise's boyfriend Christoph came and
worked very hard in the garden and on farm
equipment in need of repair. His sunny
disposition charmed us all, and we were sorry
to see him go. We had to say goodbye to Trina
and Neil as well, which was not easy for us,
and our lovely Katherine is of course another
one that is missed a lot. But Miriam came
along and took on Samina and
is certainly a great addition to the "Wings".
Denise probably got the most water fights
and swimming experience this summer, and
was the one who kept the "Wings" together
when Katrin and Solveig went to Hamburg.
Denise takes care of the young children as
well as Jana. In July Lisa, Matthew, Jana,
Andrew and Katrin squeezed into Lucinde's
VW van and went up north to Williams
Lake to visit Anja and Kip. We just made it
to their doorstep when the van disappeared
in a cloud of smoke! But we had a
wonderful time with campfires, cart rides,
horseback riding and outings, and the van
was repaired in time for our return trip.
Matthew also spent a month in Winnipeg
and Halifax, and later Andrew went with
his parents to England and Crete (Greece)
and had exciting experiences.
A sad and unexpected event was the death
of our good friend Owen Lange; we had a
very special service for him in which we
were able to pay tribute to his many
kindnesses and his quality of faithfulness.
.Adola and Annette were our
representatives at a conference in
Whitehorse at this time; they also held an
evening for Owen, and Adola even
managed to fly back in time for the funeral.
Our Summer fair was an exciting and well
received event, and we especially enjoyed
the musical entertainment organised by
Annette.
A very pleasant addition to our summer
feeling was the visit of a family from
Germany, old friends of Katrin’s, and
another friend Diane (from Quebec),who
coincidentally knew our German visitors
from 22years ago! Diane cooked wonderful
meals, gave us all haircuts and lots of hours
of laughter. At the same time, we were
introduced to Japanese culture and language
by the visit of a family from Tokyo.
Together with the other houses we had great
outings to Providence Farm and the Eco
village, where we appeared like a rent-acrowd!
The arrival of Wenzel completed our group
which will travel together through the year;
Wenzel is Lawrence’s godson and had
already done a few weeks’ work here two
years ago, so he is no stranger to the
community, and brings a lot of light and fun
into the life of the “Wings”.
With all the sun and warmth we had around
that day it was raining on Michaelmas and
we could not take our bells outside, but we
still enjoyed the music and celebration of
our harvest festival, and a delicious soup. In
October, Matthew, Lisa and Michela were
part of the Eurythmy Performance of
Cascadia for the Medical conference in
Vancouver. Because Diane was so excited
about our community, she sent her husband
Pierre to visit us and we had a lot of fun;
Matthew and Andrew learned a few card
tricks and enjoyed going out to a movie with
him. Tina stayed with us for most of
October while Lucinde was away on
holidays; we missed her when she left to go
back to “the cottage” in Victoria. Katrin
cooked her first Turkey meal for
Thanksgiving and the whole house had fun
preparing for 35 people (no stress at all!)
Changing the hot meal from lunchtime to
the evening has been quite a challenge, since
we have to cook very fast; to keep everyone
happy we could have always waffles with
Nutella. Therefore we are the proud owners
of a waffle iron!
The dark time is approaching now, and our
fire place sends out the cosy crackling sound
that asks us to curl up and read the books
we never read during the sunny season. We
should have filled ourselves enough with
the long summer’s heat this year to bear the
more dark and inward time of the coming
season, and to prepare for winter festivities.
15 th Annual Pledge Campaign –
2009 Donation Form
Charitable Number: 88827 5849 RR0001
For several years we have been fundraising for a
number of projects and with your help many
things have come to fruition. Last year we once
again received donations towards expanding our
hand bells. We also replaced the roof at the
weavery which had needed repair for quite some
time. There were many improvements to the
barnyard as you will see if you attend the open
house. The driveway for the new houses was
leveled and gravel brought in. We were also able
to purchase an efficient garden tiller from new
neighbours on Waters Road.
Not all the donations were in dollars. We now have
comfortable and attractive upholstered chairs for
services and other events. The farm received a gift of
a potato planter which greatly improved the crop
this year. We have also utilized some of the funds to
help with the new root cellar. For many years we
wanted to renovate the bunkhouse and that project is
now underway. It will house the candle and
lapidary workshops. So you see the results of your
generosity go a long way to enhancing life at the
farm.
Another new building
One other exciting project we have just started is
a potting shed across from the large greenhouse.
The main purpose of our new potting shed is to
give our staff and their children a place where
they too can join in the work of our community.
We will begin by potting spring bulbs to sell at
our open house as a fundraiser for this project.
We ask you to give some thought as to how you
can help out. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your support with these important
projects.
