serves as an advisor for the Stanford University Abbasi<br />
Program in Islamic Studies. In 2008, Madhany<br />
co-authored, with Rashad Hussain, a <strong>Brookings</strong> Project<br />
on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World analysis<br />
paper entitled, “Reformulating the Battle of Ideas:<br />
Underst<strong>and</strong>ing the Role of Islam in Counterterrorism<br />
Policy.” He holds graduate degrees from Harvard,<br />

Area Muslim Society, where he<br />
has helped establish exemplary religious services for<br />
Islamic communities across the nation. He has a long<br />
history of commitment to public service through<br />
organizations such as The Peaceful Families Project,<br />
Annual Twinning of Mosques <strong>and</strong> Synagogues, Fairfax<br />
Faith Communities in Action, Interfaith Conference<br />
of Metropolitan Washington Assembly, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Buxton Interfaith Initiative. Part of his work with the<br />
Buxton Interfaith Initiative included forging a partnership<br />
with Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk, then leader of<br />
the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation in Reston.<br />
Both men were recognized by the Washingtonian<br />
as “2009’s Washingtonians of the Year” for building<br />
bridges between their faith communities. He attained<br />
his religious education in various Islamic disciplines as<br />
a Resident Scholar at Al-Medina Institute.<br />

He was at the Institute of Ethnography at the Academy<br />
of Sciences of the USSR from 1980 until 1983,<br />
<strong>and</strong> was a faculty member of Leningrad State University<br />
from 1974 until 1979. Dr. Magomedkhanov’s research<br />
interests include the revival of Islam in Russia,<br />
contemporary ethnic <strong>and</strong> ethno-cultural problems in<br />
Dagestan <strong>and</strong> the North Caucasus, <strong>and</strong> inter-group<br />
consciousness <strong>and</strong> stereotyping, as well as issues pertaining<br />
to multi-linguistic societies <strong>and</strong> assimilation.<br />

Sanaa Makhlouf is a Senior Instructor at the Department<br />
of Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Composition at the American<br />
University in Cairo (AUC). She served as a member<br />
of the Sunni delegation at the Interfaith Summit<br />
Meeting <strong>and</strong> as coordinator for Al-Azhar Cambridge<br />
Imam Program. She was a Visiting Professor at the<br />
Graduate School of Asian <strong>and</strong> African Area Studies<br />
at Kyoto University. Makhlouf obtained her B.A. in<br />
English <strong>and</strong> Comparative Literature, with Highest<br />
Honors, from AUC, her M.A. in Early Islamic History<br />
from the Arabic Studies Department at AUC,<br />
<strong>and</strong> a second M.A. in Muslim Political Philosophy<br />
from Harvard University. She is currently writing her<br />
Ph.D. dissertation, “Shades of Tolerance: An Examination<br />
of the Spiritual Writings of al-Amir ‘Abd al-<br />
Qadir al-Jaza’iri,” in the Department of Near Eastern<br />
Languages <strong>and</strong> Civilizations at Harvard University.<br />

of BMA Funds. Over his twentyyear<br />
career in Pakistan’s financial<br />
markets, he has helped build <strong>and</strong><br />
manage Pakistan’s most successful investment banking<br />
firm. BMA launched Pakistan’s first open end country<br />
fund <strong>and</strong> the Pakistan Opportunities Fund, <strong>and</strong> was<br />
awarded Euromoney’s Excellence Award for being Pakistan’s<br />
No.1 Investment Banking Firm. Malik is a member<br />
of the Young Presidents’ Organization <strong>and</strong> has participated<br />
in the World Economic <strong>Forum</strong>. He has supported<br />
the MIT Enterprise <strong>Forum</strong> <strong>and</strong> is a Trustee for<br />
i-Care, Pakistan’s first donor-advised charity foundation.<br />
