JANUARY 2011
Santa granted an early Christmas wish to the
Wayne Wilson family, they were one of the winners in
our ginger bread house drawing.
Santa was listening to the wishes of all the children before
presenting them with an early gift.
Thank you to all the members who participated in the
Club’s holiday events starting with Halloween right
through to New Year’s Eve. This was a great season.

James Allen Podium “Investment Perspective for 2011”
James Allen joined Hilliard Lyons in 1981 and developed board experience managing
taxable fixed income, the private client group and Hilliard Lyons Asset Management.
He was named president of Hilliard Lyons in 2003 and elected chairman and CEO effective
Jan. 1, 2004. He has been active in the financial services industry and with the
Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, where he has served on the
board of directors. He continues to serve on the association's Private Client Services
Committee and Regional Firms Committee.
Allen is immediate past board chairman of the YMCA of Greater Louisville and current
board chairman of the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation, a member of
board of the Fund for the Arts (executive committee), the Downtown Development Corporation
Board of Directors (executive committee), the Board of Overseer at the University
of Louisville, the advisory board for the University of Louisville School of Business
and the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Fisher College of Business at the Ohio State University. He received his
bachelor’s degree in economics from DePauw university and a master’s degree in finance from Ohio State University.
Allen is also a chartered financial analyst (CFA).

Fish & Wild Game
Brian (KY Public Affairs Director) joins the Department from the industry side of
fish, wildlife and boating. Brian has served in several marketing capacities, most
notably with Dick’s Clothing and Sporting Goods, Medalist Apparel, and Emotion
Kayaks. He also served as the member and marketing director for the American
Sport Fishing Association. He has a BA in History from the Messiah College, Grantham,
PA. Brian has a vast amount of experience in social networking, community
based marketing, customer tracking, product evaluation, and customer recruitment
and retention. His skills in developing a grass roots effort to reach new license buyers
and evaluating how to retain the existing customers we already have are his most
valued assets.
Brian is an avid hunter and angler, and enjoys stream fishing from a kayak, as well
as deer and turkey hunting. Brian was born and raised outside of Baltimore, MD,
where he learned to appreciate and enjoy the waters around the Chesapeake Bay. As an avid outdoorsman, Brian understands
the needs of the hunter, angler, and trapper, and will quickly become an expert in addressing how we can better
serve them.
Brian has now made his home in Frankfort.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills,
from a mixture of martial arts and non-martial arts traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both
striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists
of different backgrounds to compete.
The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout
Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. This should be an exciting evening—mark your calendars and
start working on your guest list for this event.
The evening will follow previous boxing event formats beginning with a bourbon tasting in the grill, complimentary
hors d’oeuvres followed by dinner in the Main Dining Room. Several professional MMA matches will take the place of
collegiate boxing matches following dinner.
More information will be dispensed as we finalize details the first few days of January.

CHILDREN’S SQUASH CLINIC IS A SUCCESS
Head Squash Professional, Alladin
Mitha, held a complimentary squash
clinic for children of all club members
on Saturday December 4 th . The
event was a success as five(5) children
ranging in age from three (3) to eleven
(11) attended. Good times were had
by all as all the children were already
asking their fathers when they could
return to the club for more squash.
Please stay tuned as we watch the development
of our next Ivy League
star.
Pendennis Club to Host USBA 3-Cushion Tournament
Date: Thursday, January 13 th
Time: Showtime starts at 7:00 PM
Place: The Pendennis Club
Billiard Room
The United States Billiard Association
has once again chosen the Pendennis
Club’s historic billiard room to host a
pre-qualification tournament for the 3-
Cushion National Championship. This
event will start on Friday, January 14 th
and run thru Sunday, January 16 th . The
winner of this tournament will gain
automatic entry into the national championship
tournament to be held later in
the year.
Twenty-four of the most talented 3-
Cushion billiard players in the country
are scheduled to compete in this event.
The roster includes 8-time national
champion George Ashby, 2006 National
Champion Mazin Shooni, and
world champion trick-shot artist Tom
Rossman. Not to be overshadowed by
these formidable names are two fearless
Pendennis members who are also
set to compete. They are Tyler Thomp-
son, defending Pendennis Club 3-
Cushion Champion; and Chip Sutherland,
the Club’s Summer 8-Ball
League Champion.
Make plans to stop by the Club to
cheer on Chip and Tyler. Good luck
gentlemen!!!

ESPN? You probably wondered who
the guy is that wins most of those
events, and how does he make those
crazy shots??? Well here is your opportunity
to see and meet him in person!

Athletic & Squash Department News
Pendennis Club Squash Finals
In December the club had 32 members
playing in our annual club championships.
Warming up with Box League
play in November, members then put
their games to the test in A, B, C, And
D divisions in December. Our Pro,
Alladin Mitha, organized the tournament
and made the draws. A Crowd,
Hors D’Ouevres and Cocktails were
on hand as well. The D Finals saw
veteran Bruce Blythe taking it hard to
newcomer Gray Caudill. We don’t
think Bruce wanted it
to go into “extra innings”.

valiant effort, but
Bruce came out on top
as D champ.

In the C’s, Bill Hinkebein has been a
“Bridesmaid” but never a “Bride”,
having been in
the finals three
times before.
Facing our most
senior competitor
of the tournament,
Stanley
Cunningham,
Bill was down 2-
1 in games, and it looked like Stanley
would prevail. This time though, Bill
fought back and won in a tight match,
3-2. Bill pictured on Right.
In the B’s, veteran member Hunter
Wilson, (left) faced relative newcomer,
Dr. Mohammad Alsorogi (right
with Jay Hatcher middle) in the finals.
With doubles racket in hand, Hunter
pressed “Dr. Al” hard with boasts and
strong drives. However Dr. Al proved
fit for the challenge, and scrambled to
return Hunter’s hard drives, and mixed
in lobs and drops to wear Hunter out.
Dr. Al prevailed in the end 3-1.
The A Division

Jay Hatcher

off for the Title
of Club Champ.
While Jay won
the first game,
David fought
back hard, winning
the 2 nd game in overtime. Eventually
Jay’s skills had David doing
extra “Roadwork” all over the
court, and Jay prevailed 3-1, for his
6 th title as Club Champ. Congratulations
to both players for some
great squash.

For many years a common comment
was “I didn’t know I was in the tournament”.
The response was always
“That’s okay, Jim Boland signed you
up!”.
Jeff Watts-Roy
received an
award for his
many years of
contributions to
the squash community.
Besides
serving on the
club’s squash
committee for years, and playing in
most events, Jeff developed our
squash court booking system, and
has maintained and upgraded it for
years. Thank you Jeff, for your service.
