FAVOURITE PLACES: OTAGO ROAD TRIP 35
Exploring the quiet roads of our youth
Exploring the quiet roads of our youth
Bob Parker
WHAT Ilovemost about the
destination I’ve chosen is
the roadtrip. To get to
Central Otago you have achoice
of at leastsix different routes. Go
throughthe McKenzieCountry,
or down StateHighway1and up
the WaitakiValleysouth bank.
Youcan alsogovia thePig Route
throughthe Maniototo,or via
Dunedin through Roxburghin
the gorgeousTeviotValley
throughtoAlexandra.There’s
also the deep southroute via The
Catlins andInvercargill, or
finallythroughthe West Coast
via theHaast Pass to Wanaka.
What people don't know aboutCentral
Otago...
Without large numbers of
overseasvisitors, it is likethe
Otago of youryouth. Just perfect.
Not to be missed.
Agreatarea to stay...
For more of an adventure,
drive to Central Otago up the
Waitaki then via Dansey's Pass
in the Kakanui Range and stay
overnight at the historic
As we are making great strides to see
more of our own backyards, we asked
people from around the South to tell us
about their favouriteplaces. Former
Christchurchmayor Bob Parker answers
questions about his favourite New
Zealandtravel destination, Otago.While
Otago is at the top of the list at the
moment, he saysitcould as easily be
Takaka,Nelson, Banks Peninsula or
Marlborough. He loves them all.
Otago road trip
Danseys Pass Coach Inn. Next
day head into the Maniototo,
visit Naseby and on to Central
Otago. Treat yourself to a
couple of nights in Queenstown.
Visit Arrowtown for acoffee at
Provisions.
The best way to start the day ...
Normally head into
Queenstown for astart at Joe’s
Garage. Equally Chop Shop in
Arrowtown is abuzzy happy
breakfast venue. An early
morning walk on the waterfront
at Queenstown is compulsory
but wrap up warmly in the
cooler months.
Adriver’s road ...
and Palmerston.
Foragreatnightout (or in) in ...
In Queenstownithas to
include theworldclass
restaurants. Botswana Butchery
is expensivebut never
disappoints.Ofcourse, there is
alwaysthe worldfamous Ferg
Burger as an alternative.
Favouriteplaces to eat and what Ialways
order...
Daytimeopportunities for
eatingand enjoyingaglassof
wine I’d recommend are Akarua
Wines and Kitchen, or
Amisfield,both nearLake Hayes
andboth excellent.AtAmisfield
I’d go for the freshBluff oysters
andaglass of theirown Method
TraditionalBrut. The freshfruit
stands nearCromwell pack a
great variety of local produce.
Topplace to walk, run,cycle,trampis...
Great walks abound,
especially around Arrowtown.
State Highway 85, the Pig Route, winds through tussockcovered hills between Kyeburn
The stories it could tell ... A
the front gate of Lauderdale on the
BecksLauder Road, near
Omakau.
maylikethe Coal Pit Rd walk in
Gibbston Valley or the relax on
thetrack above theKawarau
River along theGibbston Valley
floor.
Topexperience nottomiss ...
Any of the river journeys. I’d
suggestdriving up to Glenorchy
wildernessjet boat up into the
unequalledbeauty of the Mt
Aspiring National Park. Andyou
canget afeedatthe top of the
lake at Glenorchy.
Experience I’d always wanted to give ago
but never gotaround to it ...
Flight from Queenstown
across to Milford Sound. The
scenery is legendary,and to geta
bird’seye viewofthe region
would be stunning. One day we’ll
do it.
Best kept secret in Central Otago ...
Take the OldDunstan Rd from
the lower Ida Valley at Poolburn
and up to the Poolburn
Reservoir, thenacross anddown
to theManiototo andRanfurly.
You’ll needafourwheeldrive
but you willnever forget the
views.
