September Picture of the Month ......................... 27

Good Grief, here it is November already and the holidays
are coming up, where does time fl y? Well it’s time for the
Chapter Offi cer elections at this month’s meeting, and I’d like
to encourage everyone to be there and VOTE! We get very few
absentee ballots after the general meeting, although they ARE
available; if you can’t make it to the meeting, you can still vote.
Just contact Earl Chadd: his e-mail & phone number are here in
the newsletter. I also want to remind everyone that the elections
are not about personal friendships or personality contests. Vote
for the person that you believe will do the best they can for the
Chapter in that position!
Now for some really serious business;
For most of this past year there has been some division, rumors,
gossip, and hard feelings about something happening within our
Chapter. It seems to be getting worse, so in the interest of transparency
I’m going to talk about it here and now. We all tend to
develop a circle of friends that we feel comfortable with, and
share common interests: it’s human nature to do so. Within the
Chapter there is a small circle who are very close, more family
then just friends, they went on so many rides together and gathered
at each others’ homes so much that they decided to “formalize”
their little group with its own name: Article 61. They
are an “R/C”—that is “riding club”—rather than an “M/C” or
motorcycle club; Inland Empire HOG is a Riding Group (actually
an owners group). There is a small but signifi cant distinction
between the two, a group such as ours is rather loosely connected,
you need only pay your dues (and own a Harley) and you
are part of the group. We socialize and ride together as much or
as little as each individual member so desires. But we remain
highly individualistic, there are people we don’t like, people we
won’t ride with or near, events that we don’t support, and that
is our (your) right.
A club is a much more tightly knit organization, they are far
closer to being a family than just friends or members. They ride
together, party together, laugh and grieve together. They are
extremely supportive of each other, and it takes considerable
effort to become a part of that family. An individual must be
asked or voted into the club, and until then they are subject to
scrutiny and evaluation by the club.
Perhaps that is part of the problem. We all want to feel wanted,
to “belong”, but maybe because being a member of HOG is so
easy we feel that being a member of anything remotely associated
with HOG is our “right”. Let me ask, do you feel the same
way about say, The Black Sheep? They are an “M/M”, or Motorcycle
Ministry, so therefore are setup somewhat differently.
But regardless, they are a group within a group, and I haven’t
heard anyone complaining about them.
Do they have a right to exist within the Chapter? That is a question
that even the Motor Company leaves up to the Dealer Principal,
and it’s his call.
Director
RICK “MONGO” ANGLE
Back to A61, are they inclusive? Well yes, I would say they are
somewhat: families tend to be that way. Are they exclusive? Depends
on how much you want to be a part of them, how much
effort are you willing to put into joining their club, becoming
a part of their family. No one has the “right” to join the club
unless and until they are asked. I had some members contact
me today about what happened at the GAR to support the Geezers
M/C Poker Run. Apparently it offended some of us that
A61 members started out at Skips in IEHOG vests, then did
the poker run in A61 colors. This isn’t the fi rst time they have
appeared at an event with their A61 colors on, but permit me to
clarify things. The Chapter GAR was to Renegade, the registration
point for the Geezers Poker Run, at that point the Chapter
ride was over, and it was up to each member as to whether they
would go on the run. At Renegade I was approached and asked
by the A61 V.P. if the Chapter ride was over, and would I mind
if the A61 members did the poker run in their own colors? I gave
my permission. The Chapter part of the ride was over, the poker
run was in support of Geezers M/C. This is the same thing that
has occurred in the past: once the Chapter part of the ride is
over, they—and you—are free to do as you please. Occasionally
they have arrived at Skips in A61 colors and proceeded to do a
ride as A61, and as a distinct club they have that right.
Is there perhaps, a twinge of jealousy behind some of the complaints?
Do we (you) wish that we had as tight a friendship as
they do? Are we putting them under a microscope and holding
them to a higher standard? This is something each member
needs to ask themselves, if it even concerns you. A large majority
that I have talked to don’t have an opinion either way: some
applaud it, and some believe it’s the worst thing that has ever
happened to the Chapter. I don’t believe it is. After this article
I’m sure that I will be suspected of being an A61 member. I am
not. I just don’t believe that they pose a risk to the Chapter.
Do I wish that they didn’t exist, well yes, but for purely selfi sh
reasons: it would make my job as director easier. What do you
think about them, and why? Tell me. There are times the Director
really NEEDS your input, and this is one of them. Well, I’ll
get off my soapbox for the moment, catch my breath, and listen
to all of you…
Welcome to ELECTION month. And I mean the important
one: IEHOG’s election. Make sure to come out and vote
so your voice is heard, and if you don’t vote please refrain from
complaining. You can run for an offi ce or you can vote, but if
you do neither you have no right to complain.
October was a very busy month with some great riding. The
overnighter to Bakersfi eld was a good time as usual. If you chose
to ride Saturday, you were treated to an awesome day as both
Keith and Jim led rides through some beautiful areas. Thanks
to them both.
By the time this copy of the NL is available, we will have sobered
up from the annual Halloween Party, once again hosted
by the Bridges. Big thanks to them, but mostly to Sharon cuz
we know she does most of the work. And this followed on the
heels (pun intended) of Dogtoberfest. I trust we made lots of
dogs and cats happy that day.
I was going to talk about an important subject this month: I
wanted to discuss cliques, groups, sub-groups, or whatever you
would like to call them. They exist everywhere and be they
good, bad or indifferent, they exist within IEHOG. They always
have, and they always will. They can form for several reasons:
geographical, riding styles, prior friendships, etc. Last time I
looked, we were all adults in this chapter, with the exception of
Dylan and Tori. We are all IEHOG fi rst and foremost. If you
don’t think so, please have the courage to ask a particular group
that you may be concerned about what THEY are all about. I
may be a relative newcomer to the chapter, but I KNOW that
prior offi cers, current offi cers, and I hope future offi cers—as well
as our Dealer—will not allow anything to change the IEHOG
fi rst mantra. We may have our differences, but let’s be adults
and remember why we joined. I hope for all of us that reason
was to RIDE AND HAVE FUN! I know I said I was “going” to
talk about it but once I started, I couldn’t help it. Our Director
has covered it all better than I ever could, so please read or reread
Rick’s article.
See you at the meeting!
Well we did it! We have sold enough National HOG
Lifetime Membership Raffl e tickets to draw the winning name.
The drawing will be held at the Christmas Party! Have you
bought your tickets for the party yet? You do not have to be
present to win but of course we would want you there so we
could help you celebrate!
Elections are this month, and in more ways than one. So be sure
your vote counts!
This month we start our Holiday Charity events. If you have
not participated in the “Give Em the Bird” Ride or Christmas
at Cabazon, then you are missing out. Both events are very
heartwarming and it is such a pleasure to know that we helped
families enjoy their holiday. Please fi nd it in your hearts to help
stock the toy box that will be put out at Skip’s after the Dogtoberfest.
PRIMARY OFFICERS
Turkey time is here! To all of you & your families:
“Happy Thanksgiving!”
A very BIG THANKS to Jim and Sharon Bridges for hosting
the Halloween party, which is always so much fun!
I always say that volunteers are what make this Chapter what
it is, so thanks to all those that stepped up and lent a hand for
Dogtoberfest. The Chapter BBQ raised $430 in donations for a
great cause.
I would like to remind everyone about the “Give ‘Em the Bird
Ride” on November 17th: we need turkeys and fi xin’s for 20
needy families. Any extra food will be added to the pantry at
Cabazon. We have an extremely generous Chapter, so let’s all get
out there and show our support.
Speaking of generous Chapter members, our Drifter Fund, to
date, has the current balance of $1953. This is just a tad shy of
my $3000 goal. Do you think we can make it? Let’s try to beat
it! Thanks!
Please be sure to attend the next Chapter meeting/social. It’s
Election time folks! The date: November 8th @ 7pm. Come early
for $1 tacos.
Ride and Be Safe!

Happy November! It’s fi nally fall, although the
weather still hasn’t realized that fact yet. November is the
month for Thanksgiving and our annual “Give em the Bird”
event.
The box will also be going up at Skips for the Gift donations
for Cabazon Christmas. I will have a signup sheet for Happy
Wrappers for the Christmas season at the next meeting and I
will be bugging you all to help out. The day after Thanksgiving
we will begin our gift wrapping in our own little corner
at Skips.
Say, wasn’t that Halloween Party the best? I know I sure had
a great time. Our costume contest winners were Pam Tauzin,
Robert and Brandy Hernandez and our illustrious Director
and his wife Pynkey. They were dressed as “Jay Dabney”, the
Dark Fairy and Grim Reaper, and Red Riding Hood with her
own personal Wolf.
Our Gift Basket Winner is John Boyce. The basket will be
taken to Skips for you to pick up. Christmas tickets are still
on sale. Remember that tickets must be pre-purchased. We
will not be selling tickets at the door.
Remember during the upcoming holidays to be extra careful
out there, and don’t forget to come out to the meeting this
month and cast your ballots for your next year’s primary offi
November Birthdays
From the Archives LYNN LAMY
8
Thanksgiving in America
Very shortly out of high school in 1950, I was excited about
beginning my fi rst job. I worked near the heart of downtown
Philadelphia, and as it turned out, it was conveniently located
a few blocks from the National Historic Independence
Square. Weather permitting, daily at noon time I walked over
to the Independence Square and sat in the park with my sack
lunch. Very much enamored with the beauty of this quaint
colonial setting, it was a quiet occasion, a sense of majesty,
and always refreshing to ponder that once upon a time our
Nation’s leaders gathered here to formulate the charter for
what we now enjoy as the United States of America.
Customarily, before returning to work I entered Independence
Hall, its doors freely open, and stared intently at the
paintings, artifacts and antique furniture. I thought of the
American Revolution and the price so many paid to obtain
the freedoms I now enjoy. Standing where the Founding Fathers
of America once stood debating the issues upon which
our country would be formed, one could sense the living presence
of it all; it’s as if you could hear the scratching of pen in
the signing of the Declaration of Independence – our nation’s
history in the making.
Usually on departure, I walked past our great symbol of freedom,
the giant Liberty Bell with its monumental crack commemorating
the joyful victory of our independence. Sobered
by the refl ection that some of my own ancestry fought in the
Revolutionary War for the freedom so won, it became a pensive
moment of thankfulness as I lightheartedly returned to
my work place.
Now in the year 2012, it was an occasion to roam through the
historic battle grounds of Lexington and Concord. I stood
on the old North Bridge in Concord, where Emerson’s poetic
sonnet resounded “The Shot Heard ‘round the World,”
thus heralding the battle for freedom that began April 19,
1775. Browsing the fi elds of tombstones, I thought of the
men who died for the principles we read in our Declaration
of Independence: those things so declared as having been
“Endowed by our Creator,” our natural rights to life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness.
Keeping in focus those historic moments set forth by Godfearing
men, I contrast them with our present day jeopardy
in which the One who is the Author of those “unalienable
rights” is quite often the subject of scorn if not completely
nullifi ed, as being witnessed in many universities, the political
arena, our schools, courts, and even in religious institutions;
and thus fi nally foisting its debilitating intrusion into
the family, wherein this moral departure attempts to stage
its ultimate fortress of decay.
I wonder if as this Nation, having been undergirded by such
a spiritual foundation, complacently allows itself to drift
from allegiance to its Maker, will it not follow that those
principles of freedom derived from our Creator shall likewise
clandestinely erode; and thus the liberties we cherish fall
into a state of irreversible moral bondage. Though not yet
gone, ever so imminently fragile: “One Nation under God”
- our American heritage, sad if all were for naught. Truly, it
is a season to give thanks and refl ect upon His grace, taking
heed the wage of Divine abandonment.
If you folks haven’t seen the WCT photo album that
our Chapter Photographer & Historian team—Nina & Marty
Greenlee—have created yet, you need to. It lives in our new
bookcase (thanks again, Jay Michaels) at Skip’s and you defi -
nitely need to check it out. They’ve put serious time and effort
to memorialize our event and they have certainly succeeded. We
also have some older albums on display if you want to see what
some of us used to look like b/4 wrinkles…
Okay, now the AMA has ramped up its “Vote Like a Motorcyclist”
campaign with T-shirts, pins, and posters to supplement
its 2012 AMA Voter Guide. “The elections on November 6 are
some of the most important in many years for the future of motorcycling,”
said Wayne Allard, AMA Vice President for Government
Relations. “It’s critical for motorcyclists to get out and
vote to help protect their right to ride.”
A major tool available to AMA members this campaign season is
the online 2012 AMA Voter Guide. It features a fuel-gauge rating
for every federal and gubernatorial candidate of the major
political parties who returned an AMA questionnaire. The rating
shows how closely the candidates’ answers align with AMA
positions. The 2012 AMA Voter Guide is available as an online
member benefi t by going to: http://americanmotorcyclist.com/
votelikeamotorcyclist
Allard noted that during this political season it’s important to
remind fellow riders to think before they vote, and to vote like a
motorcyclist. One way to do that is by wearing a “Vote
Like A Motorcyclist” T-shirt while out for a ride, hang-
10
EARL “CAPT GEEZER” CHADD
ing with riding buddies or while picking up parts at a dealership.
It’s also a visible reminder to non-riders and candidates
that motorcyclists vote.
“Vote Like A Motorcyclist” t-shirts cost just $16.85. Posters
$16.80, and pins are $2.20. Gear up with “Vote Like A Motorcyclist”
items at http://www.zazzle.com/americanmotorcyclist.
We can never have too many T-shirts now can we?
Oh, and don’t forget to vote on Nov. 6! My opinions for the
various positions are free and I’ll be happy to share them with
you if you want to contact me. Just promise that we’ll remain
friends afterwards please.
As always, thanks for reading. Now let’s get out there and
ride (be safe and courteous) and lets have fun!
Keep your knees in the breeze!

Ready for Winter Riding?
We’re lucky that we have a virtual year-round riding
season. However, when the mercury hides in the bottom of
the little red bulb, we have to make some changes in our riding
style.
One of the big enemies of riders is hypothermia. Riding at highway
speeds in cool or cold weather can deplete a rider’s body
heat and leave him numb and fuzzy-headed before he realizes
what has happened.
Even when the temperature is in the 60’s, the wind chill factor
at speeds over 40 miles per hour is in the low 30’s. Riders
often misjudge how cold the ride will be because they are freshly
out of a warm house and standing still in the warm sunshine.
At temperatures below 70°, they should dress in multiple layers,
adding and subtracting as necessary. Not only do multiple
layers provide versatility, they also create insulated pockets of
warm air. While it is common for riders to put on sweatshirts
and jackets, the lower body is often ignored.
Thermal underwear and chaps keep feet and knees fl exible and
ready to function. Thermal socks and ski-sock liners help keep
toes cozy. Many ski shops offer an excellent variety in various
weights. The old gray variety with the red toes will do the job
also. A well-designed winter riding suit made especially for motorcycling
is a bulky but very welcome addition to any rider’s
wardrobe.
Lightweight riding gloves do little to protect from the cold,
and supple hands are critical to quick responses to unexpected
hazards. Ski gloves or winter riding gloves with gauntlet fl ares
help keep hands toasty. Some riders add ski glove liners, or use
three-fi nger mittens for added warmth. They should be aware,
however, that any added bulk may make operating the controls
more awkward.
A face shield is essential, and it should be fi rmly snapped in
place. Those wearing three-quarter helmets may want to consider
a ski mask or muffl er to keep the chin and throat warm.
There are excellent masks which cover the throat, mouth, and
nose with a material similar to a lightweight wetsuit, yet allow
the rider to breathe and speak comfortably. Some dealerships
may have them, but they are more commonly found at sporting
goods stores, which offer a line of ski wear.
A luxurious, although expensive, way to keep warm is with an
electric suit, gloves, socks, and even heated grips. They draw
little current, but offer a lot of overall warmth.
Co-riders should be afforded the same clothing or more, since
they often don’t get the same protection from the fairing that
the rider does.
RON WILLIAMS
There’s a whole different world of riding in the winter, and we
can enjoy it to its fullest if we dress properly.
Next time you’re at Skip’s, check out the cold weather riding
gear and be comfortable while riding this winter.
Remember; “If you ride like there is
no tomorrow, there won’t be.”
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Nominations for offi cers for 2013 were held at our October 11, 2012 Chapter meeting. In the newsletter preceding the meeting it
was announced that nominations could be made at the meeting and for one week after the meeting, until October 18, 2012. One
additional nomination was made between the meeting and October 18, 2012. Accordingly, all of the nominees for 2013 Primary
Offi cers, in alphabetical order, are:
Director: Rick Angle Treasurer: Pam Tauzin
Assistant Director: Frank DiNucci, Michael Oge Road Captain: Al Navarro, Dave Rusk
Secretary: Lisa Oge Ladies of Harley Offi cer: Nancy Chadd, Terri King
The general election for the 2013 offi cers will occur at the November 8, 2012 Chapter meeting. The polls will be open to vote
promptly following the conclusion of the meeting. The votes will not be counted on November 8th to allow for the inclusion of
absentee ballots. The nominee who receives the greatest number of votes for any particular offi ce will be elected to that position.
We have two options for those Chapter members who cannot attend the November 8th meeting. You may request an absentee ballot
by calling me at (951) 990-6725 or by e-mail at: MTI.LAX@verizon.net. If I am not in please leave a message on my voicemail
stating you wish an absentee ballot with your name, address and telephone number, and I will send you a ballot. Absentee ballots
may be requested up to and including November 15th and must be returned to Earl Chadd at 23310 Elfi n Place, Moreno Valley, CA
92557 by November 22, 2012. The second option is to just simply send me an email with your choices.
All of the ballots from the Chapter meeting on November 8th will be placed within a sealed envelope and held on the back porch
of Funk & Wagnall’s until the close of absentee voting. The election committee will then later convene to count and validate the
ballots, determining the winners. The election results will be delivered to our Chapter Director, Rick Angle, who will announce the
results in an appropriate manner. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the elections committee:
Kathy Bradford, Chris Robbins, Jeri Williams, Ron Williams or myself.
Please know that since my wife Nancy is running for an elected offi ce I will recuse myself from the ballot counting procedure and
will instead just hang out, eat donuts and look important.
Please make every effort to attend the November 8th meeting and vote.
Thank you!
Earl Chadd
Elections Committee Chairman
Rick Angle
Hello everyone! I am honored to have been nominated as Director for a second year.
I have been riding for approximately forty years, almost all of it on street bikes. I was without a bike for a while, due to the rigors
and challenges of raising a family and establishing myself in my chosen profession. It was a great day in my life when I regained
the wind in my face and the freedom of two wheels once again.
I have been a Chapter member for almost ten years now, and have held the positions of Photographer, Head Road Captain, Safety
Offi cer, Assistant Director, and lately, Director. In that time I have celebrated the marriages and mourned the deaths of Chapter
members; believe me, it can be a wild ride at times. I take great pride in being associated with Inland Empire HOG, and although
the coming year promises to hold some unprecedented challenges to our chapter, I will do my best to lead the Chapter through it.
Thank you
DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS
FOR DIRECTOR

FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Michael Oge
My name is Michael Oge. My wife Lisa and I joined the Inland Empire Harley Owners Group over two years ago, and we are proud
to say that we hit the fl oor running. We have volunteered for just about every event there has been and ride as often as possible with
our new friends (family) in this remarkable Chapter.
I grew up around motorcycles and have ridden most of my life. Before semi-retiring, I was a supervisor at United Airlines in the
welding fabrication department. Currently, Lisa and I are the on-sight Managers of Sierra Pines Mobile Home Community. I am
a master craftsman welder/fabricator and have many creative talents that have been very helpful to this Chapter such as making
patches, banners, and advertising signs for various events.
We have sponsored and volunteered our personal time for Taryn’s Ride, West Coast Thunder, and the Corset Run rides. I am an
avid supporter of these charitable events and admire the Chapter as well as Skip Fordyce Harley-Davidson for their dedication to
such important philanthropies.
I have made my intentions known that I want to serve IE HOG as an offi cer, and the confi dence in my abilities proved apparent to
the current board when I was invited to attend the annual Harley-Davidson leadership conference, known as HOT (Harley Offi cers
Training) in San Diego earlier this year. My pride and loyalty to this Chapter has led me to become an unoffi cial Public Relations
guy through Facebook and the IE HOG and West Coast Thunder web sites. I believe in IE HOG and I know how great it is to be
an active member of such a strong and continually growing group.
Recently, I was invited to join the board of West Coast Thunder and head up the registration committee for WCT XIV. I have
served as a Road Captain, planned and led rides for IE HOG, and been an active member of the Activities Committee. I look forward
to becoming even more involved and meeting each and every one of you by being elected as your 2013 Assistant Director.
I would appreciate your vote for Assistant Director for 2013.
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Frank DiNucci
It is a great honor to be nominated for Assistant Director. Being a member of IE HOG for 3 years has been a fun and rewarding
experience for me.
My education includes an Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. In the Army I also
completed Command Staff and General College Course.
I have served a total of 34 years in the military, including both active and National Guard. During that time I served in many
positions of leadership from platoon leader to commander, retiring as a Full Colonel. Some of the military honors I received were
2 Minute Man Awards (the third highest award by the Army National Guard Bureau), 3 Army Achievement Medals, 2 Army Accommodation
Medals, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
During 2005 to 2011 I was the Manager of an Occupational Health Clinic with a staff of 27 people. My responsibilities included
budgeting, evaluating, trouble shooting, and coordinating daily the functions of the Occupational Health Clinic.
My fi rst experience riding a motorcycle was in 1964, on a 160cc Honda Super Hawk. I have had multiple motorcycles such as
Nortons, Hondas, Triumphs, and of course Harley Davidsons. The last three bikes I owned were a Heritage Classic, Fat Boy Lo,
and presently an Electra Glide Classic. At 66 I still feel the excitement of riding and camaraderie, and I would appreciate your
consideration to elect me as Assistant Director.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS
FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Lisa Ortiz-Oge t
Hello, let me introduce myself to those that do not know me: I am Lisa Ortiz-Oge.
I am a retired school bus driver/dispatcher for the company formerly known as Laidlaw; I worked in that capacity for 22 years.
After being injured by a student my career path changed to Property Management. I have been my current position for 11 years
managing Sierra Pines Mobile Home Community in Riverside, CA with my husband Mike.
We purchased our fi rst Harley-Davidson in 2008 but we were not informed that IE HOG was out there; it wasn’t until 2010—upon
purchase of the Ultra Classic—that we were informed about this great group. So we decided to accept an invite from Kevin Marquis
to a meeting whereby we joined immediately…
Since joining we have been on many exciting fun excursions with the Chapter and have jumped into volunteering for any event that
we can be a part of to support IE HOG and Skip Fordyce Harley Davidson, including some of the Ladies of Harley events, Skips
Bike Night, Dogtoberfest, Taryn’s Ride, and West Coast Thunder.
Due to an opening for Harley Offi cers Training, an offer to attend was extended and both Mike and I accepted the offer and opportunity
sit in and learn. I attended several classes regarding the successful operation of HOG Chapters, along with proper record
keeping, and a few that pertained to other offi cer duties that I am sure will be benefi cial if I’m elected.
I am running for the 2013 position of Secretary for IE HOG and look forward to doing the best I possibly can for the betterment
of the Chapter. I’d appreciate your vote for 2013 IE HOG Secretary.
Respectfully,
Lisa Ortiz-Oge
FOR SECRETARY
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Pam Tauzin
I would like to thank all those who have supported me for the past fi ve years as IE HOG Treasurer. This has been a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’
experience for me. I have enjoyed the last fi ve years, and I’m looking forward to another fabulous, fantastic year!
I joined IE HOG in January 2005. My husband Mark and I have three children and two grandchildren. I have put in many volunteer
hours with the Chapter, helping with events both small and large.
I have many years experience with cash handling and bookkeeping. I was a store manager for Circle K and also the front end manager
at Toys R Us. I was responsible for daily bookkeeping, deposits and reports.
Serving the Chapter as Treasurer for the past fi ve years has been a continuous learning experience. Attending the H.O.T. (Harley
Offi cers Training) classes have been very benefi cial, giving me a better overview of my position and what I need to continue doing
to be a successful offi cer in the future.
Thank you again for the opportunity to represent this Chapter. I’m extremely proud to call you family…and I look forward to
another very rewarding year. It’s fantastic to be a part of the “Best of the Best”.
SECRETARY & TREASURER NOMINATIONS
FOR TREASURER

FOR HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Dave R RRusk
For those that don‘t know me, my name is Dave Rusk and I am honored to be running for Head Road Captain.
I was born and raised in Long Beach and have been riding motorcycles for over 40 years. I moved to the Riverside area over 20
years ago, purchased a house, got a dog, and started a family. I married my high school sweetheart and best friend Kathy in 1986;
we have two daughters, one son and three grandkids. I have been employed by Laguna Beach County Water District for the past
27 years and serve them as the Field Maintenance Supervisor. When I purchased my fi rst Harley in 2005 I knew at that time I had
something special under me, but little did I know how very special it was going to be.
As many of you have seen, I am very committed and passionate when it comes to helping kids, and have a very special place in my
heart for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. If elected to serve IEHOG as your Head Road Captain I will show that same commitment
and passion in serving this great chapter.
When I joined the chapter I really had no clue what to expect. A friend told me it would be good to get out and make some new
friends, and he was right! Everyone I’ve met has been nothing but friendly, encouraging, and most of all accepting.
I learned a long time ago that if I work hard, other people will be rewarded. Wait…that doesn’t make sense…but think about it:
when I promise to work hard, who is going to be rewarded? Our members will! I have learned that to be a good chapter offi cer, I
will need to work hard to serve you, the members. Without the members there is no chapter. I love to ride, and I believe in a team
concept: get everyone involved. I will show that same love of riding in helping to move this chapter forward. It would be my privilege
and honor to serve you, and that is why I am asking for your vote for Head Road Captain.
Dave “Wishbone” Rusk
Al Navarro
Hello to all my Inland Empire H.O.G. friends and family. Some of you know who I am but for the members that do not, my name is
Al Navarro. I have been nominated for the position of Head Road Captain as we approach the 2013 riding season. I have accepted
the nomination and I am asking for your vote of confi dence in our upcoming elections.
I consider the position of Head Road Captain as one that is very important to a chapter like ours, and I am willing to take on the
responsibility that goes into the safe planning and execution of our riding activities. I want everyone to know that I do not take the
importance of safety and leading the chapter’s riding program lightly and look forward to working with all of our existing Road
Captains as well as nurturing our new members into experienced Road Captains of the future. I really enjoy giving riders a great
riding experience when I am leading rides and try to make sure all rides have been mapped, pre-ridden with adequate and timely
breaks. I also try to share my experience with other road captains giving them some direction to follow but leaving them enough
room for their own creativity and ingenuity.
Now a little me…I have been riding motorcycles off and on since I was about 12 or 13 when I saved up my money from delivering
newspapers and bought a used Honda 100 from a neighbor. Growing up and in most of my adult life, I have spent much of my time
on the road on two wheels. My current ride is a 2009 Road Glide which is number seven of all the different Harley-Davidson bikes I
have owned. As a H.O.G. member, 2012 marks my 10th consecutive year as a member and I have recently qualifi ed for my 150,000
mile rocker! (If only I had started way back when…who knows where I’d be…LOL!). As for my experience as an Offi cer within a
HOG chapter, I have held the following positions: Director, Assistant Director, Activities Offi cer (2x) and have held positions on the
2010 and 2012 State H.O.G. Rallies. I have attended the H.O.G. offi cer training conferences four times and I am all about H.O.G.
and the benefi ts provided and what it should mean to the membership.
If anyone has any questions for me directly, I am open to answer just about anything you want to know. Please feel free to shoot
me an email at atnavarro@roadrunner.com or fi nd me on Facebook and send me a message.
HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN NOMINATIONS
FOR HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN

FOR LADIES OF HARLEY
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Terri King
My name is Terri King. I have been a member of this chapter for many years, and have had the pleasure of being led by some great
people who were elected LOH Offi cers from the old days of IEHOG. Some may not know these names, but I feel they need to be
recognized: women like Kathy Bradford, Annette Dora, Ramona Guivian, Nancy Chadd, Ruth Mason, and in recent years Sharon
Bridges. These women went over and beyond, they have all had a profound impact on our Chapter, and I have learned from them
all. I have always valued our chapter and the family I have made here, so I thank each one of them for making IE HOG and LOH
what it is today.
For those that do not know me, I would like to give you a little of my background: I am the youngest child of 3. I grew up with
a father that loved motorcycles and a mother that went along for the ride; it was a sure bet that it was going to run in the family.
So at the age of fi ve after already being on dirt bikes with big brother and Dad, I wanted my own. Santa brought me just that the
Christmas of 1968! By June of 69 I was racing that mini bike. As the years passed the bikes got bigger and rolled onto the pavement.
Over those years I have shared many adventures along the road that brought me to HOG.
Having degrees in Business Management and Culinary Arts, I have owned and operated my own restaurants, a catering business,
and a banquet facility. Prior to that, I was Food and Beverage Manager for AMF Worldwide, Assistant GM for the Edgewater Hotel,
and a manager for Marriot Corp. for 14 years. I have even hosted our chapter meetings at my banquet facility and also at AMF
Riverside Lanes when I managed it. Along that road I have been involved in many organizations, holding positions over several
years and several terms, as President, Vice President, Road Captain, and Secretary for several women’s riding groups.
However, my biggest accomplishment was a United States Naval Ombudsman for over 10 years, working directly for the Commanding
Offi cer of the aircraft carrier USS Independence while stationed out of Norfolk Virginia and then while in dry dock in
Philadelphia and then the battleship USS New Jersey stationed out of Long Beach. I was responsible for taking care of various
situations for over 5000 sailors stationed aboard each of the ships.
Because of my naval position, being the Registration Chairman
for our very own West Coast Thunder for so many
years has been close to my heart. I have been a mentor for
Skip Fordyce Harley-Davidson’s “Share Your Spark” program,
and to celebrate “Women’s Rider Month” I founded
and executed the IE Corset Run. While only in its third
year, IECR has become an outstanding success. Along with
that I have held a charity event for a women’s and children
shelter for the holidays called “Cool November Nights Bike
Night”.
When Harley-Davidson created LOH, their intent was to
have women share in the destinations that we all reach,
whether we ride our own or as passengers. LOH is about
the camaraderie and friendship that is developed on the
road, and the enjoyment of independence of getting out in
the wind. With my position, I hope to be able to bring back
more women’s rides to Inland Empire’s Ladies of Harley.
I believe with my dedication and commitment as a woman
that promotes women riders, my professional experience,
my experience in leading groups of women, and my willingness
to welcome new ideas while honoring the traditions
of the past, we can create a new spark for Ladies of Harley.
I am ready and able to go down that road.
It is an honor to be nominated, and I look forward to serving
our membership. Thank you for your consideration of
becoming your 2013 Ladies of Harley Offi cer. I look forward
to seeing you on the Road!
LADIES OF HARLEY NOMINATIONS

FOR LADIES OF HARLEY
ELECTION SUPPLEMENT
Nancy Chadd
Hello everyone! I am grateful that I have been nominated for L.O.H. again. Thank you!
My husband Earl and I have been chapter members for over twelve years. One of our fi rst dates in 1978 was on Earl’s old Shovel
Head and I have loved riding ever since. Over the years we have traveled halfway across the country several times. After 25 years
or so of riding behind Earl I took the MSF course and have been riding my own since 2002. I am proud to say that I rode my 883
Sportster all the way to Sturgis, South Dakota and back again - through all types of weather!
I have been intimately involved in West Coast Thunder for the past twelve years as the Liaison Offi cer for the Color Guard. We’ve
put in some serious time over the years but I think that you all would have to agree with me that it’s for a great cause and well
worth the endeavor.
As most of you know I have also been associated with Cabazon, and we are now going on the 7th year of helping these families.
With your help we have done turkey dinner (Give em’ the Bird Run) at Thanksgiving and put on a great Christmas at Cabazon
parade & toy distribution. This is what the holidays are all about and thanks to all of you we make this happen!
I was honored to have been the L.O.H. Offi cer in 2006 and 2008 and I would truly appreciate holding that offi ce again. If you attended
any of the L.O.H. sponsored events back then I hope that you enjoyed them. Some were rather unique and I have some
other new ideas for L.O.H. activities this coming year. If everyone agrees, I would like to reschedule our old favorites, too.
If elected I promise to make every effort to represent your interests as if they were my very own. I would appreciate your vote!
Thank you!
LADIES OF HARLEY NOMINATIONS
I’m Nancy Chadd and I approve this message (LOL)

Oh damn, can you believe it’s already November?
Blink again and it will be New Years and on to 2013.
What a crazy year it has been for me. I am quite ready to
blink and have 2012 behind me. It has been a pleasure to
serve as your Membership Offi cer this year, and I truly appreciate
the opportunity to be a part of the best HOG chapter
anywhere. However, I have decided to step aside and let
someone else carry the membership torch into 2013. With
all the great members we have in IE HOG I have no doubt
someone will step up and scratch their name on the sheet and
get the job done. Once again thank you for the opportunity.
Now on to business... As of writing this article
we have 244 members on the roster. Please
remember to make sure your national HOG is
up to date. When your national expires so does
your local membership.
A big heartfelt thank you to all of you that came
out on the last blood ride. The weather was a bit drizzly, but
IEHOG once again showed what they are made of: DETER-
MINATION.
We are now at 168 units donated, and I know more will be
coming in for the month of October and November. There’s
one more blood ride, on December 15th with KSU 0930 from
Skips. Our goal is 200 units donated through December, and
Nuts and Bolts
ADAM HAISTEN, ASSISTANT PARTS MANAGER
In the world of motorcycles, the different types of rides are
as varied as the riders who operate them. There are cruisers
with handlebars stretched to the heavens, tourers with
comfort amenities that rival a recliner, sportbikes that are
two wheeled jet fi ghters, and dual-sports whose life begins
where the pavement ends. Options abound. But just as important
as picking the right motorcycle for the type of riding
you want to do, it is just as crucial to pick the right
type of tire as well. For a product that every motorcyclist
utilizes, many know very little about them. Here are some
common tire factoids and the info you need to know when
considering your next tire purchase.
Compound: Like professional bakers, every tire manufacturer
has unique rubber recipes for each of their various tires.
Certain changes in the recipe will ultimately determine a
tire’s compound, or how well it grips the road in a variety
of conditions. Certain recipes create a “softer/stickier” compound
that is ideal for racing applications where ultimate
traction is paramount. Other recipes create “harder” compounds
that are more resilient to wear. In most cases, it is a
trade off as the softer compound will wear faster and harder
compounds lack grip.
Tread Design & Wear Bars: In street applications, aside
from aesthetic appeal, the primary function of the tread
pattern is to throw water and debris away from the tire’s
contact patch (ie: where the rubber meets the road). In
off-road applications, the tread design factors into gaining
traction in a variety of different conditions. Unsure if you
have enough tread? Most tires are created with “wear bars”
concealed within the tread. Looking like a slightly upraised
bump, when the tread is worn down to the same level as
these wear bars, it’s time to replace the tire.
Mix and Match: For various reasons, it’s not uncommon to
fi nd motorcycles that have two different brands and styles
of tires on them. But a common question is whether it is ok
to do so. Aside from all the legal jargon from tire manufacturers,
it’s best to use a simple “common sense” approach.
Although different manufacturers may have tires that fall
into the same category, the compound recipes used to make
the tires can be completely different and result in each tire
having a different “grip” on the road. This becomes very
critical when the bike is turning or braking. For example:
If a front tire is “stickier” than the rear, it is possible
to have the rear end slide out mid turn. Opposite-
20
adam.haisten@skipfordyce.com
ly, a “stickier” rear tire could push the front tire through a
turn which risks it washing out. For this reason, it is best to
always match front and rear tires, both manufacturer and
model, because they’re designed to work together.
Load Rating: Whether for a scooter or the space shuttle,
every tire has a load rating. Located just after the tire sizing
number sequence on the sidewall, the load rating specifi es
the maximum amount of weight that a tire can safely support.
To determine if your tires are adequate, get the load
rating from each tire. Add the two (or three, if on a trike)
load ratings together. Now subtract the combined weight of
the vehicle, occupants, and any gear. The combined weight
should never exceed the combined Load Rating.
Speed Rating: Located just after the Load Rating, the speed
rating indicates the maximum speed a tire can safely operate
at. With maximum speed ratings varying from 180mph+
down to a mere 62mph, it’s important to know exactly what
your tire can handle. A 62mph rated tire letting go at 80mph
can be a clean underwear endangering experience.
Date Codes: Embossed into the tire’s sidewall is a date code
that indicates when the tire was made. The date code consists
of 4 numbers in a recessed oval. The fi rst two digits are the
week of the year the tire was made and the last two digits indicate
the year the tire was made. As an example: “3211” =
32nd week of 2011. Knowing date codes is important when
purchasing tires and/or evaluating the tires on your motorcycle.
Over time, a tire’s rubber begins to dry out resulting
in it hardening, cracking, and losing its ability to fl ex; all
factors that affect a tire’s ability to grip and maintain traction.
Although the difference in tire recipes can change the
expected life of a tire, most agree that 5 years is the maximum
life of a tire. However, other factors can drastically
reduce the maximum life of a tire; such as the temperature
of where the tires are kept. Tires kept in higher temps can
see their life cut in half. Whereas tires kept in cooler areas
can actually see extended life. When purchasing tires, not
only should you always check date codes, but check to see
how the tires are stored. Certain mega stores are known to
purchase tires in extreme bulk then store them in metal storage
bins outside for a couple of years.
How are your tires? Stop by and ask a Parts or Service Associate
for a quick parking lot inspection.

As of this writing, I have just fi nished my civic duty.
Three weeks of jury duty took its toll on me but it also gave
me a glimpse into a world that, fortunately, I rarely see. All
in all, it was a good experience and a chance to see, close
hand, how our justice system works. Speaking of civic duty,
with November come elections, both within our chapter and
in the real world! Take the time to vote and make sure your
voice is heard.
I would like to congratulate Chuck and Jeanette Baugh on
the purchase of their new 2012 Ultra Classic! I look forward
to seeing Jeanette out on rides a bit more often now that she
can ride in such comfort!
Welcome to the world! Ryder Leeann Olsen, 5 lbs 8 oz, was
born on October 13, a month early. Congratulations to proud
grandparents Kathy and Dave Rusk, and Uncle Dylan! Her
early arrival was some cause for concern, but everyone is doing
great now. Now Dave doesn’t have to be a bad grandpa if
he goes on the San Simeon trip in early November!
Way to go, John Boyce! John recently completed the CA
1000/1500 Iron Butt ride on October 20! Hopefully, your iron
butt has recovered. Congratulations!
IEHOG was proud to have Zac Tauzin—who will be shipping
out for boot camp soon—along for a recent GAR. It
was his birthday wish to ride once with his parents before he
leaves. I understand it was a fun ride for all. Be safe Zac, and
thank you for your willingness to serve.
Get well wishes go to Bob Kirk, who fractured his middle
fi nger. One can only guess how he did it, but the main thing
is to get well soon and back out on that bike. Condolences to
Chris Robbins for the loss of her aunt; it has been a rough
year for the Robbins family. Heartfelt well wishes from your
IEHOG family.
Kudos: to Ron Williams for handling his fi rst ever medical
emergency on his new school bus route. One of his young
students was having diffi culty breathing; he was able to calm
her and also keep the other 60 kids in line until help arrived.
Everything turned out fi ne and everyone was safe. Good job,
Ron!
Kudos also to Terri King! The third annual Corset Run was
a huge success, as you all know. A local blogger, IEDarla,
wrote a very nice article about Terri. This was posted on our
Facebook page, but I wanted to include it here, for those of
you who hadn’t had a chance to read it! http://iedarla.com/
