O2C Science Fair
Friday, May 28 th , brought together 170 sixth graders from Oostburg
Middle School, Oostburg Christian School, and Cedar
Grove Belgium School for the First Annual O2C Science Fair.
OMS had 20 projects entered into the fair. Sixth graders started
working on their projects in Science class at the beginning of
May. Each group worked together to develop a question which
could then be answered using the scientific method.
Projects covered all areas of science. Some of the
questions students’ projects answered were:
~Do goldfish change colors?
~Which fruit contains the most water?
~Which brand of bubble gum blows the biggest
bubble?
~Does the size of a parachute affect its flight?
~How can you cool a can of soda the fastest?
~Does the food/drink you eat/drink affect your heart
rate?
~Which diaper/paper towel brand is the most
absorbent?
The morning of the fair each group was judged by 4 of
the 30 community judges at the Cedar Grove Belgium Middle
School. Students did a wonderful job sharing their projects and
informing the various judges about the scientific method used to
answer their questions. During the evening, students shared their
projects with family members who came to see the hard work and
ratings awarded by the judges on the projects.
It was a great day where excitement for science was evident.
Thank you to all who made these projects and the fair a success!
National Financial
Literacy Challenge
The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department
of Education teamed up in this past semester to
launch the National Financial Capability Challenge for
2010.
The National Financial Capability Challenge is an
awards program designed to increase the financial know-
ledge and capability of high school aged youth across the
United States so they can take control over their financial
futures.
70 seniors from Mr. Pete Christopherson’s American
Government II class took part in the program, with 19 receiving
national recognition from the U.S. Department of
Treasury and Department of Education for scoring in the
Top 20% in the country. Those students are:
CHRISTIANA L. BECKLEY
ESTHER C. BIESZK
CALVIN A. COTE
DAVID DOLFIN
CHRIS C. FOLKMAR
KYLE G. FRIER
VALERIE J. PETERS
JESSICA A. SCHREURS
CRAIG M. SCHUMACHER
JOHN A. TAYLOR
JONATHAN L. WIESKAMP
The average score for the O.H.S. senior class was 79%
(compared to a 70% national average.) In addition, Michael
Paluchniak was one of only 524 students nationwide
to record a perfect score (out of 40 questions), while David
Dolfin, Chelsea Hibbs, Stephanie D. Nyhof and Valerie
Peters achieved a 98% score correctly answering 39 of the
40 questions.
76,892 students from 1,535 schools nationwide took the
voluntary online exam which is designed to illustrate the
relevance of financial capability, allow students to demonstrate
what they have learned, and assess their financial
knowledge. Wisconsin was the 3 rd highest ranking state in
terms of student participation in the national challenge.
