Watershed Leadership
Award Won
“There is no
substitute for
excellence.”
Oostburg High School won a 2009 Watershed Leadership Award for working the last
four years to improve and protect Willow Creek in the Sheboygan River Basin. The school
was given a plaque and wooden hand crafted duck
with a ‗gold‘ medal to signify this accomplishment.
Over the past four years, during WKCE testing
in November, some of the Social Problems students
have volunteered a morning in November to assist
Mr. Jon Gumtow and the Sheboygan River Basin
Partnership in improving the watershed health of Willow
Creek in the Sheboygan River Basin. Over the
years, walking along the banks and trudging in the
creek, they have removed many old tires, construction
materials, old household appliances, countless log
jams, and bags of just general garbage to improve the
quality of the water and habitat for fish as this small
creek is one of the few naturally reproducing trout and
Craig Keller
salmon streams in Sheboygan County. Students have
worked from the mouth of the stream which is located
near the intersection of Highway PP and Taylor Drive (by Lutheran High School), up to the
intersection of Interstate 43 and State Highway 23, near the start of the Plank Road Bicycle
Trail. They anticipate doing more of this in the future!
Congratulations to Andrea Bohm,
Christiana Beckley and Allyson Lastusky
Oostburg High School Powerlifting Club
An exciting new sport has really taken off at OHS. That sport is powerlifting and it has
been in Oostburg for three years now. Still new, most people are unaware of what is taking
place with this sport. Oostburg has now embraced powerlifting as the first club sport affiliated
with OHS. It is not a WIAA sport, but its own association, the WHSPA (Wisconsin High
School Power Lifting Association). Powerlifting is a worldwide sport and one of the most popular
pure-strength sports in America, especially in Wisconsin making its way to Oostburg.
So what is powerlifting all about? The Oostburg
High School Powerlifting Team is a club made up of athletes,
both boys and girls, who are interested in building
their core strength. Each lifter focuses on reaching personal
goals and self improvement. Athletes are paired
with lifters of like ability during practice in order to help
them achieve the maximum benefit of their individual work
Mollie Bruyette
-outs. All lifters have four regional meets in which they compete against other athletes
of the same gender and weight. ALL lifters have the ability to qualify for
state, national, and world competitions based on their cumulative maximum lifts.
Lifts include the squat, bench press, and dead lift. Most importantly the sport focuses
on individual and team growth.
The season began mid-November and finished in April. Practices were
held at 5:30 am Monday—Thursday in the fitness center of OHS. Oostburg had 21 lifters this year, 9 boys and 12 girls.
The team had 12 state qualifiers and 15 national qualifiers. One exciting part of their success is the team awards that
have been achieved this year. Most notably, the girls placed 3 rd overall in Division 3 at the state competition in Seymour,
WI. Also the JV girls earned 3 rd overall at the national competition. Oostburg is competing against schools with
larger enrollments throughout the year so to be placing as a team is impressive to say the least. Congratulations to all of
those that participated in a successful
powerlifting season.
The Job Olympics is held every year at Concordia College.
The students work on different job skills needed to be
successful in the workplace after they graduate, and then
compete in front of a judge. Skills for all levels of abilities are
included from sorting silverware and socks to counting
money, from providing childcare to filing and phone
skills. Each school creates a centerpiece that reflects their
school and each participant gets to vote on the best
one. There is also “team sandwich” competition in which
each school selects 2 students to work together to make
sandwiches –Nate and Marissa came in 2 nd ! It is a wonderful
opportunity to work on job and social skills. In between competition
the students can play bingo, relax in a lounge, meet
other students or have fun dancing to music provided by a
student DJ. They had a very successful day as Jennifer came
in 1 st in sock match, Krystal 2 nd in phone connections, Maurah
3 rd in childcare, Nate 3 rd in janitorial and Marissa and Michael
received honorable mention.
Local Vets Share with 8th Graders
On Tuesday, March 9, two local World War Two Veterans spoke to the eighth graders
at Oostburg Middle School. The veterans, Mr. Harold ―Pee Wee‖ TenHaken and Pastor
Paul Van Loon spoke about their experiences in the Second World War and talked about
the importance of patriotism in America. Both men spoke about the American Legion
and what it represents and does, and they shared how many veterans of World War Two
are quickly passing on. Mr. TenHaken was also recognized in a letter that was read on
his behalf because he has been invited to visit Washington, D.C., Arlington National
Cemetery, and will also view the national
monument recognizing veterans later in
May. The students were also taught a lesson in
flag etiquette and how to properly stand at attention
before the flag as Pastor Van Loon
sounded taps on his bugle. Misters TenHaken
and Van Loon also joined the students at lunch
and were able to make some connections with
some of the students.
Even Eighth-Grade Teams
Know Better
As a middle-school social-studies teacher
who is teaching about the American Revolution
and the role of peaceful protests in our
democratic society, I must protest the publication
of your ―Heard on the Field‖ item
―Vikings Blame Game‖ (Sports, Jan.27).
Our middle school is located one hour
south of our beloved Green Bay Packers, and
we all enjoyed watching Brett Favre end his
season the way he has the last three years, by
throwing an interception. Your article fails to
place the blame even partially on the shoulders
of No. 4. In fact, and quite ironically, his
name isn‘t even mentioned. Did you not see
Mr. Favre roll right and then throw back
across the field and throw an interception,
thus negating the chance for his kicker, also a
former Packer, to take a shot at a 57-yard
field goal? Even our eighth-grade quarterback
knows better than to do that.
Pastor Paul Van Loon
Publishing 8th Graders
While the eighth grade social studies classes were studying the
causes of the American Revolution and the different kinds of protests
in social studies, their teacher, Mr. Barry Kloepping, ran across an article
in the Wall Street Journal. The article was written about the Vikings
loss to the Saints, and there was a lot of blame going around in
the article. The article never mentioned any fault to Brett Favre, although
he threw the interception that lost the game. Mr. Kloepping
thought this was ―Unbelievable!‖ So he read the article to his classes
and his 8 th hour students wanted to write a letter of protest to the Wall
Street Journal. He wrote it, the students helped, and then they sent it.
Their letter (an example of peaceful protest) was published a
couple weeks later in the print edition and on-line edition of this national
newspaper. From their original letter they received responses
from Chicago, Portland, Wisconsin, and a cranky letter from a woman
from Minnesota. They wrote her a polite letter back and included
some of their favorite pictures of Brett Favre after he has thrown an
interception. The students seemed to have great fun with it and got a
hands on lesson in peaceful protest.
