Celebration of Academic Achievement! On March 1, our traditional banquet was held to celebrate the academic achievements of the highest-ranking seniors at OHS and to recognize their most influential teachers. We congratulate the following students and their most influential teacher! Wisconsin Mathematics League Contest Every 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th grade student at Oostburg Middle School recently participated in the Wisconsin Mathematics League Contest. The top five student scores from each grade were tabulated and entered into the contest. The 6 th grade students were Zac Dulmes, Riley Gilmore, Jon Leitzke, Alex Malueg, Justin Mentink, and Cole Nelson. Cole scored the highest in the 6 th grade. There were six names submitted because of a tie for fifth place. The 7 th grade students were Justin Dolfin, Michael Meke, Ryan Moehrke, Zach Riddiough, and Caitlin Smith. Michael scored the highest in the 7 th grade. The 8 th grade students were Erin Bartenstein, Blaine Herro, Joey Kretz, Bryan Lammers, Alyssa Schinner, Josh Smies, and Kyle Swart. Kyle scored the highest in the 8 th grade. There were seven names submitted because of a tie for fifth place. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this contest. OCEF Golf Outing/Fundraiser The Oostburg Community Education Foundation is planning a golf outing/fundraiser for Saturday August 7, 2010. The golf outing will be a shotgun start of 18 holes of golf at Sheboygan Town & Country. Look for more details to follow. Plan now to attend this exciting event that will benefit Oostburg Schools. Congratulations to Mr. Rick Hartman and Mr. Terry Hendrikse for their re-election to the Oostburg School Board. Local Vets Share with 8th Graders On Tuesday, March 9, two local World War Two Veterans spoke to the eighth graders at Oostburg Middle School. The veterans, Mr. Harold ―Pee Wee‖ TenHaken and Pastor Paul Van Loon spoke about their experiences in the Second World War and talked about the importance of patriotism in America. Both men spoke about the American Legion and what it represents and does, and they shared how many veterans of World War Two are quickly passing on. Mr. TenHaken was also recognized in a letter that was read on his behalf because he has been invited to visit Washington, D.C., Arlington National Cemetery, and will also view the national monument recognizing veterans later in May. The students were also taught a lesson in flag etiquette and how to properly stand at attention before the flag as Pastor Van Loon sounded taps on his bugle. Misters TenHaken and Van Loon also joined the students at lunch and were able to make some connections with some of the students. Mr. Harold TenHaken and Pastor Paul Van Loon Even Eighth-Grade Teams Know Better As a middle-school social-studies teacher who is teaching about the American Revolution and the role of peaceful protests in our democratic society, I must protest the publication of your ―Heard on the Field‖ item ―Vikings Blame Game‖ (Sports, Jan.27). Our middle school is located one hour south of our beloved Green Bay Packers, and we all enjoyed watching Brett Favre end his season the way he has the last three years, by throwing an interception. Your article fails to place the blame even partially on the shoulders of No. 4. In fact, and quite ironically, his name isn‘t even mentioned. Did you not see Mr. Favre roll right and then throw back across the field and throw an interception, thus negating the chance for his kicker, also a former Packer, to take a shot at a 57-yard field goal? Even our eighth-grade quarterback knows better than to do that. Barry Kloepping and the Eighth-hour Social Studies Class, excluding Meghan and Shannon Oostburg Middle School Oostburg, WI ―There is no substitute for excellence.‖ 5 Pastor Paul Van Loon Publishing 8th Graders While the eighth grade social studies classes were studying the causes of the American Revolution and the different kinds of protests in social studies, their teacher, Mr. Barry Kloepping, ran across an article in the Wall Street Journal. The article was written about the Vikings loss to the Saints, and there was a lot of blame going around in the article. The article never mentioned any fault to Brett Favre, although he threw the interception that lost the game. Mr. Kloepping thought this was ―Unbelievable!‖ So he read the article to his classes and his 8 th hour students wanted to write a letter of protest to the Wall Street Journal. He wrote it, the students helped, and then they sent it. Their letter (an example of peaceful protest) was published a couple weeks later in the print edition and on-line edition of this national newspaper. From their original letter they received responses from Chicago, Portland, Wisconsin, and a cranky letter from a woman from Minnesota. They wrote her a polite letter back and included some of their favorite pictures of Brett Favre after he has thrown an interception. The students seemed to have great fun with it and got a hands on lesson in peaceful protest. Oostburg NHS Welcomes New Members The membership of Oostburg High School‘s chapter of the National Honor Society grew on April 19th as eleven individuals were inducted. The group welcomed Seniors Elizabeth Flipse, and Sarah Wieskamp; Juniors Amanda Markham, Rachel Meinen, Kaitlyn Molter, and Zachary Rogers; and Sophomores Benjamin Bartenstein, Christopher Guy, Jennifer Kuffel, Allison Paluchniak and Kelly Swart.
