Oostburg High School Powerlifting Club An exciting new sport has really taken off at OHS. That sport is powerlifting and it has been in Oostburg for three years now. Still new, most people are unaware of what is taking place with this sport. Oostburg has now embraced powerlifting as the first club sport affiliated with OHS. It is not a WIAA sport, but its own association, the WHSPA (Wisconsin High School Power Lifting Association). Powerlifting is a worldwide sport and one of the most popular pure-strength sports in America, especially in Wisconsin making its way to Oostburg. So what is powerlifting all about? The Oostburg High School Powerlifting Team is a club made up of athletes, both boys and girls, who are interested in building their core strength. Each lifter focuses on reaching personal goals and self improvement. Athletes are paired with lifters of like ability during practice in order to help them achieve the maximum benefit of their individual work Mollie Bruyette -outs. All lifters have four regional meets in which they compete against other athletes of the same gender and weight. ALL lifters have the ability to qualify for state, national, and world competitions based on their cumulative maximum lifts. Lifts include the squat, bench press, and dead lift. Most importantly the sport focuses on individual and team growth. The season began mid-November and finished in April. Practices were held at 5:30 am Monday—Thursday in the fitness center of OHS. Oostburg had 21 lifters this year, 9 boys and 12 girls. The team had 12 state qualifiers and 15 national qualifiers. One exciting part of their success is the team awards that have been achieved this year. Most notably, the girls placed 3 rd overall in Division 3 at the state competition in Seymour, WI. Also the JV girls earned 3 rd overall at the national competition. Oostburg is competing against schools with larger enrollments throughout the year so to be placing as a team is impressive to say the least. Congratulations to all of those that participated in a successful powerlifting season. The students work on different job skills needed to be successful in the workplace after they graduate, and then compete in front of a judge. Skills for all levels of abilities are included from sorting silverware and socks to counting money, from providing childcare to filing and phone skills. Each school creates a centerpiece that reflects their school and each participant gets to vote on the best one. There is also “team sandwich” competition in which each school selects 2 students to work together to make sandwiches –Nate and Marissa came in 2 nd ! It is a wonderful opportunity to work on job and social skills. In between competition the students can play bingo, relax in a lounge, meet other students or have fun dancing to music provided by a student DJ. They had a very successful day as Jennifer came in 1 st in sock match, Krystal 2 nd in phone connections, Maurah 3 rd in childcare, Nate 3 rd in janitorial and Marissa and Michael received honorable mention. We are very proud of Team OHS! 33 www.oostburg.k12.wi.us
