DENNY OLIVER
AS TIME GOES BY
Shock waves were sent through Glasgow’s
musical community last Sunday at the sad news
of the passing of Scheme’s lead guitarist,
vocalist, and songwriter Denny Oliver.
Tomorrow, Glasgow will pay respects to one of
its legendary musical sons Denny. Denny was
well known and much loved along with the
other members of Scheme.
At 68 years of age Denny had written and
performed music for over 40 years and had
influenced 3 generations with his brilliant talent.
Denny was a kind, humble and gentle man who
spent much of his time helping others.
Denny’s Band Oliver’s Army was playing gigs in
venues up until 1979 and in 1980 Scheme was
formed. Over the past 40 years Scheme sold out
the Glasgow Apollo, The Pavilion & The
Barrowland to name but a few of the larger
venues along with many pubs and clubs in
Easterhouse, Castlemilk, Drumchapel and
various venues in the city centre.
This is noted as quite an achievement and held
in very high regard amongst those who work,
live and play in the city’s music industry. So
much so that we spoke to our friends at the
Barrowland this week who thought it would be a
fitting tribute to Denny to light up the sign as his
funeral cortege passes tomorrow between 2.30
& 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
Denny and the band gave huge amounts of
their time to helping the communities of
Scotland. Scheme would not need to be
asked twice and would selflessly play
fundraiser after fundraiser raising funds for
those most hit by poverty and injustice.
Some of their most famous fundraising was
given to the Miner’s family’s, during the
infamous Miners strikes and the families of
the Caterpillar workers which was another
strike that hit the headlines. In more recent
years Denny had played alongside the
Alabama 3 at the annual MOJO (Miscarriage
of Justice Organisations). Wherever there
was a good and just cause Denny and the
boys would be there supporting it.
Glasgow Eyes will be paying our respects to
Denny at the famous Barrowland tomorrow
afternoon, and I along with many others will
have tears in my eyes as I remember our
friend Denny Oliver.
I for one feel blessed to have known Denny
and had the pleasure of listening to his
music and singing his songs. Songs that will
live on this is the gift that Denny Oliver gave
to Glasgow. RIP.

A Barrowland Farewell
Glasgow’s music community, musicians, giggers
and friends gathered at the City’s Iconic Music
venue the Barrowland to pay tribute to Denny
Oliver as his funeral cortege made an honorary
journey of remembrance through the streets of
Glasgow passing many of the venues where
Scheme had played over the past four decades
of their musical career.
Crowds gathered outside the Barrowland,
grandparents, parents their children and their
children’s children. The atmosphere was of
mixed emotions. A sad day remembering the
lovely man who brought us some beautifully
written songs. A celebration of his life as those
songs were played in the background. And one
final 10 minute round of applause as the hearse
approached and stopped to allow mourners to
take in the sight of the Barrowlands sign lit
during daylight which is a rare sight in the City.
The mourners who choose to pay their respects
at the Barrowland adorned the hearse with
roses while the many of the mourners in the
cortege applauded along with the crowd.

BE-HEARD
A former soldier has told how he realised his dream to become a fashion designer after his
friend lost a battle with depression.
Now Joseph McCabe has dedicated his new business to the memory of tragic Liam Gildea,
who took his own life during the Covid-19 lockdown.
He said: “Losing Liam gave me the final push to do it. He would be so proud.”
Joseph, 35, was devastated when Liam, 29, died in April.
Joseph was a private in the Royal Logistic Corps for five years before leaving the Army to
work as a ground maintenance worker. However, he’d always nurtured an ambition to
launch his own clothing label.
It took Liam’s sudden death to inspire him to create his B-Heard label as a tribute to his
pal.
Joseph said he wants the brand to raise awareness of mental health issues – and has
pledged to donate a cut of profits to a support group.
Professional footballers including Celtic winger Calvin Miller, Partick Thistle striker Brian
Graham and ex-Raith Rovers player and manager John Baird have already backed the new
label and been photographed wearing the range.
Former Celtic star Bobby Petta also backed the brand on social media.
Dad-of-two Joseph, of Carntyne, Glasgow, said: “I always wanted to design clothes and
have a fashion brand.
“Liam was a good-looking guy, a great laugh and very outgoing so he’d probably want to
be one of the models. He’s a great loss to everyone who knew him.
“I wanted to get the message that people had to speak out and discuss these issues,
hence the name B-Heard.
“It’s been a sad, difficult time but I wanted something positive to come from all of this. He
passed away in the middle of lockdown so it was a very tough time.”

The pair became good pals when they worked at the same slabbing and groundwork
firm. Joseph said: “I worked with him for about two years and we were good mates.
He was the life and soul of the party, a great singer and very bubbly. I was the last person
to speak to him. I knew he was suffering but I didn’t know how bad it had got. I don’t
want anyone else to go through this.
“I wanted B-Heard clothing to be a brand based on mental health awareness. I hope it
helps people understand that they’re not alone and we’re all here for one another to help
get through this illness.
“People struggle in different ways every day of our lives. The message is really clear – it’s
OK not to be OK. No one should just suffer in silence.”
The clothing firm will donate 10 per cent of each sale to a charity that raises awareness
of mental health issues. Money will be given to Glasgow Association for Mental Health
(GAMH), which provides more than 2000 hours of support to people every week.
The clothing range features brightly coloured T-shirts, hoodies and accessories. Prices
start from £25 for a cap to £45 for a hoodie. The clothes are handmade in the UK from
material which is also sourced in this country.
Joseph added: “It’s going really well. It was great to get the footballers involved – they’ve
been so supportive. John Baird is a great pal and I had connections with Calvin Miller and
Brian Graham.
“I hope to open a store and I really want to see the business expand outside the UK. I just
wish Liam was here to see it.”
TOP NEWS STORIES TODAY
Jacqueline Croft, boss of GAMH, said: “We were delighted to hear about Joseph’s clothing
brand and his offer to donate a percentage from his range to our organisation.

“Raising awareness of mental health is one of our core messages and that is exactly what
Joseph is also aiming to do with his fashion label.”
Liam’s brother Peter said: “Liam’s passing was a big shock to everyone.
“We’re so happy Joseph is trying to make something positive come from this by reducing
the stigma around mental health.”

I enjoy capturing the moment, whether it is human expression, juxtaposition or
people in geometry. I love the fast split second thinking that goes into seeing,
composing and capturing, while shooting from the hip and dealing with the ever
changing lighting conditions; which becomes a natural reflex after lots of practice
and from failed shots in the past. There is also a part of me that loves the fact I
have no idea what amazing photo could be just around the corner, so I always
carry my camera with me.

BERKOFFS
GLASGOW
We have all seen the Bert Hardy and Oscar Marzaroli pictures from Glasgow’s yesterday, but
this unseen incredible set of pictures will be up there with the greats of Photography if these
pics are anything to go by.
Can’t wait to get a hold of this book and review we will be looking forward to this book for sure,
Berkoff’s Gorbals bring it on.
This never before seen body of work covers a period in the Autumn of 1966, when Berkoff was
an actor with The Citizens Theatre, which at that time was directed by Michael Blakemore. In
the days he had off from acting, he would be out exploring with his camera, using that time to
photograph the environment around The Citizens.
He was fascinated by the the appalling decay of The Gorbals, which was waiting for the iron ball
of the demolition workers. These photographs capture most of it just in time. Like many
photographers he was drawn to slums and decay, ‘because these are the areas in which I was
brought up.’
He recounts a memory of that time: ‘One of my favourite places in Glasgow was The Barras
Market on Sunday morning, such a lot of fun. I actually acted in the small space next to The
Citizens, called The Close Theatre, which I found quite wonderful to work in and I used to spend
a few hours there in the afternoon after my sojourns around The Gorbals, to cook up my supper,
which was a popes-eye steak which I bought from the butcher’s opposite. There was a lovely
man who was a caretaker at The Close, who used to sing a particular song every afternoon,
which I have never ever forgotten.
‘Oh, I’d like to have a home of my own,
Sitting by my own fireside,
And if you’ve only got a table and a chair,
It’s all yours and you’re welcome there.’
Steven had already begun to capture the old Jewish East End, so The Gorbals photographs
became a very apt echo of what was going on in the slums of London. His London photographs
are captured in the book ‘East End Photographs’, edited by Lucy Bell.
Best known as an English actor, author, playwright and theatre director, he was born in Stepney,
London in 1937. After studying drama and mime in London and Paris, he entered a series of
repertory companies and in 1968 and formed the London Theatre Group. His plays and
adaptations have been performed in many countries and in many languages. Among the many
adaptations Berkoff has created for the stage, directed and toured, are Kafka’s Metamorphosis
and The Trial, Agamemnon after Aeschylus, and Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher. He has
directed and toured productions of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus also playing the title role, Richard
II, Hamlet and Macbeth, as well as Oscar Wilde’s Salome. Films Steven has acted in include A
Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Octopussy, Beverly Hills Cop, Rambo, Under the Cherry Moon,
Absolute Beginners and The Krays. He directed and co- starred with Joan Collins in the film
version of his play Decadence.

new album Godspeed, which will be released in April
2021 on the band’s own label Go Wow Records.
Along with this hugely awaited announcement, the
band have also released the first single from said
release, Keep Me A Space.
Written for a grieving relative, when speaking about
the new single, frontman James Allan states:
“I was writing that for my cousin who I grew up with who then,
from the age of maybe 10 or whatever, I never really saw again.
In the song I was saying ‘whatever was then, maybe that’s
something that’s forever’. Because it happened all them years
ago maybe you can’t touch it, you can’t feel a memory, it’s not
tangible, but that’s not to say that doesn’t last forever because
that’s maybe floating somewhere. Wherever you are in your
thoughts, keep me a space’.”

NORTHERN SOUL
Northern soul is a music and dance movement
that emerged in Northern England and the
English Midlands in the late 1960s from the
British mod scene, based on a particular style of
black American soul music, especially from the
mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo (100
bpm and above)[1][2] or American soul music
from northern cities such as Detroit, Chicago and
others.
The northern soul movement generally eschews
Motown or Motown-influenced music that has
had significant mainstream commercial success.
The recordings most prized by enthusiasts of the
genre are usually by lesser-known artists,
released only in limited numbers, often by
American labels such as Vee-Jay Records, Chess
Records, Brunswick Records, Ric-Tic, Gordy
Records, Golden World Records (Detroit),
Mirwood Records (Los Angeles), Shout Records
and Okeh.

dance styles and fashions that grew out of
the underground rhythm and soul scene of
the late 1960s at venues such as the

and the associated dances and fashions
quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and
nightclubs like the Wigan Casino, the

SHAMBOLICS RELEASE NEW
SINGLE
Scottish indie dreamers -
SHAMBOLICS - will release a new
single: ‘Love Collides’ this Autumn.
Pre-save Here.
Like a last-chance display of affection to save a relationship on the rocks,
the Fife four-piece put their everything into a track that makes for heartin-mouth
listening.
“Love collides is a song about when a relationship is on the brink and is
'forever going wrong’” explains the band’s Darren Forbes.
As two lovers head on a collision-course towards a seismic showdown,
‘Love Collides’ spirals through a score of complex time signatures,
myriad key changes, lovelorn harmonies and electrifying solos.
“The track contrasts between minor key and lyrics about how everything
is breaking and then opens up in the chorus in a major key with optimistic
lyrics.” Says Forbes. “Love is colliding but we can keep it together.”
Clocking in at just over 3 and half minutes and delivered at pace, the
lyrics cascade through the kaleidoscope of mixed-feelings and splitsecond
decisions that reel through the mind on the precipice of a breakup.
With drama reverberating from every note, ‘Love Collides’ rivets with
a palpable sense of emotion and a febrile urgency that recalls the early
masterworks of The Smiths or The Cure.
Recorded at Eggman Studios in the band’s hometown of Fife, and
produced and engineered by Darren Forbes, Scott Thomson, and Scott
Williamson.
Signed by Alan McGee to his Creation 23 label last summer, ‘Love Collides’ is the latest release
from one of the imprint’s sharpest prospects and is the direct studio successor to: ‘Sandra
Speed’, which was released before lockdown earlier this year. Not ones to sit still, the Shams
preoccupied themselves during the pandemic with a series of classic cover versions in their
distinctly dreamy style, including Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Everywhere’, The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding
Lights’, ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ and The Stones' ’Sympathy for the Devil’; finding a raft of new
fans with their uplifting reworkings.
Already firm favourites on Scottish turf, the four-piece have become accustomed to selling out
venues like St Lukes in Glasgow and The Water Rats in London in a heartbeat. With word
spreading fast since their signing to Creation 23, last year the band sold-out their entire 7” vinyl
run for debut single ‘Chasing A Disaster’ on pre-sales alone, before being greeted by a sell-out
UK headline tour in the Autumn.
Steadily gaining fans at press too, the band’s releases on Creation 23 have earned repeated
plays on Steve Lamacq’s BBC6 Music Show, plus seen plaudits from Clash Magazine and more,
who have praised their “soaring guitar pop that recall everyone from The La's to Blossoms and
beyond”.
Dreamy of design and artful of execution, ‘Love Collides’ encapsulates everything that
Shambolics are about. Released 2 October 2020, the latest from this Fife four-piece may be a
break-up song but is guaranteed to have plenty more smitten yet.
