generous donation of 8 cases of girl scout cookies! Many thanks to
option for some of the meals. (Ron’s favorite is Thin Mint!)

THE LATEST NEWS
Aase Haugen Auxiliary News
The Aase Haugen Auxiliary has scheduled their Spring
Salad Luncheon for May 3, 2012, from 11 am—1 pm at St.
Benedict’s Catholic Church lower level community room in
Decorah. The Auxiliary will gladly accept donated salads or
supplies. Tickets will be $6.50 each, available at the door
that day. There are always so many wonderful salads to
choose from, you are guaranteed to have a tasty
smorgasbord on your plate!
Proceeds from the May Salad Luncheon will go toward
enhancing resident life at Aase Haugen Homes. We are so
lucky to have such a dedicated group supporting our mission
and goals in the Aase Haugen family!
Pictured above are Tiffany Lundtvedt, RN and Girl Scout Troop
Leader, accepting the AHH Lost Penny Day donation from
Woodlands Mayor, Doris Daughton. Woodlands Neighborhood
chose the girl scouts to donate their ‘found’ pennies to because
the group has come on several occasions to help celebrate
various holidays and make crafts together.
Lost Penny Day
In January, we began collecting lost and stashed pennies at
AHH to put them to good use. When we cashed the pennies
in, just after Lincoln’s birthday, we had collected $92.00! We
split the proceeds between our four neighborhoods, and they
each have $23.00 to donate to a non-profit group or project.
Meadows neighborhood has already decided to donate their
proceeds to the Food Pantry at First Lutheran. They have also
announced they will keep the Lost Penny Jar up all year round
at their neighborhood so they can continue to support the great
non-profits of the area! Prairies Neighborhood has decided to
donate their funds to the Red Cross and Woodlands donated
to the Girl Scouts! What generous residents we have!
The new walk-in freezer/cooler combo went in very smoothly over a few short days in late January. From demolition of the
old freezer (pictured above) to clean-up and site preparation for the new freezer, (pictured above, r) to the modular installation
and systems connection, (pictured opposite page) it was quite a process to watch! Upon demolition of the old freezer/cooler,
workers found around 3 inches of solid ice buildup around and below the old freezer! It was definitely time for a new unit!
During demolition and installation, you could feel the excitement from the dietary staff, “ It will be so nice to have something

Sew Much Fun at Aase Haugen Sewing Bees By Sara Nottestad, Activities Extraordinaire
“Where’s the girl who takes the drink orders around here?
Anyone else besides me need a margarita?” Lots of laughter
follows. Another one makes a comment, “It’s a great life if
you don’t weaken”… more laughter. Do these remarks
sound like what you would expect to here at a nursing home
sewing bee on Friday afternoon? You bet!
Since it’s inception in Fall 2010, the Aase
Haugen sewing group is where ladies (and
some rare gentlemen) gather for a little sewing
and a lot of laughs. Friday afternoons find
anywhere from 3 – 7 folks sitting around tables
chatting about hopes, hard times, good
health & bad health, all while performing a
host of textile activities: hand-sewing, cutting
quilt blocks, sorting fabrics, filling pillows, and
assembling shoulder bags.
The sewing bee has become so popular that
volunteer Elaine Headington has added a second
sewing session on Tuesday afternoons
before bingo. The sewing bees are open to all
residents of Aase Haugen Homes and their
families and friends – what a wonderful way to
spend time with your family member by joining the sewing
bee activity for the day!
Most women participate in some type of sewing or knitting
activity in their lifetime and as we age, some of those skills
become increasingly difficult due to the onset of poor eyesight
or increased arthritic symptoms. But the interest in fiber
arts (sewing, knitting, needlework, crochet) remains
strong and women want to stay involved with their skills.
The Aase Haugen Sewing Bees offer two areas of emphasis:
1) socializing through conversation and textiles and 2) mild to
moderate activity through handling fabrics, sewing, and col-
laboration on projects.
Socializing through conversation and textiles offers a sense
of community that women are already accustomed to. We
sort fabrics and dream up projects for the patterns and textures.
Frequent conversation includes which patterns and
colors work best together.
Discussion allows us to visualize potential projects and determine
best uses for fabrics. Some of us bring in work we’ve
done in the past and we have “show and tell”. Esther Bigler
and Alice Fretheim brought in beautiful examples of their
embroidery while Gladys Grindeland offered a klostersom
sample.
Sewing activities are varied and based on our abilities. Some
participants continue versions of their craft by filling pillows
with the batting we collect from old pillows. Two or three
women are able to hand-sew the pillows shut. Others meas-
new to keep shiny and clean. Once equipment ages to a certain point, you just can’t scrub it enough to make it look clean
and shiny anymore,” says Dietary Supervisor, Pam Vick. All the Dietary team members love the new cooler/freezer. Most
often heard are; “The ramp is WONDERFUL, it’s so easy to get food in and out,” or “Everything freezes so much better in
the new unit, it takes a lot longer to defrost the meat than it used to—you know it’s staying colder!” and even, “There’s so
much more room!” Many thanks to all our supporters who made this purchase possible!

couple gals have the opportunity to run
the sewing machine.
Which brings us to an interesting
event that occurred on Friday March 9-
Margaret Rude operated an electric
sewing machine for the first time in her
life!
Here’s some of the conversation that
occurred surrounding this milestone:
“OK Margaret, have you ever operated
an electric sewing machine before?”
Margaret replied, “No.”
“OK, well, you see the pedal on the
floor? That’s how you advance the
needle – kind of like stepping on a gas
pedal in a car.” ….long pause….
“Have you ever driven a car?” With a
twinkle and a lot of chuckling, Margaret
replied “No.”
I have never seen Margaret laugh so
hard! And when things quieted down,
we agreed that we’d start at the very
beginning.
Sewing statistics include: potentially
150 pillows assembled and filled; probably
57 shoulder bags, wheel chair and
walker bags sewn; one failed quilt;
one potentially hugely successful
quilt (thanks Evelyn!); one
emerging wall hanging; 4 but-
ton dolls; 4 door angels; and
lots of sorted buttons
(thanks Ronnie!).
Special thanks goes to Kathy
Rustad who brings her sewing
machine from home most Fridays
to help us manufacture everything we
make. Thanks to Maryann Baker who
brought her sewing machine from
home and made 25 small wheel chair
bags. Thanks to Elaine Headington
who allows us to expand our sewing
opportunities by adding the Tuesday
sewing group.
And many thanks to Latham Furniture
and Decorah Furniture who donate
countless upholstery samples for
our projects.
Neighborhood Emails
All of our residents at Aase Haugen Homes have access to emails sent to them by
friends and family. Each neighborhood has its own email address, and the resident’s
full name the email is for goes in the subject line. Emails are checked at least
twice each week, and emails for residents are printed off and delivered to them. If
residents wish to respond, we send an email back as they dictate.
Please feel free to email our residents. Even if you don’t hear back, rest assured
the emails are getting through and they enjoy hearing from you! Email addresses
are as follows: Meadows Neighborhood: meadows@aasehaugen.com; Prairies
Neighborhood: prairies@aasehaugen.com; Woodlands Neighborhood: woodlands@aasehaugen.com;
Rivers Neighborhood: rivers@aasehaugen.com. If
you are unsure which neighborhood they live on—pick one and send your message!
If there’s a correction, we will email you back letting you know. The biggest
goal we hope to achieve is keeping families ore in touch with their loved ones at
AHH. If you have further questions, contact Kate Klimesh at 563-382-3603.
AHH Awarded Grants
Aase Haugen Homes was recently awarded two grants, one from the Depot Outlet
and one from the Winneshiek County Community Foundation. We had applied
to the Depot Foundation for funding to cover $1,250 in expenses for the various
musical performers we have at Aase Haugen Homes throughout the year and $750
to cover the cost of blinds for our Rehabilitation and Therapy Room to reduce the
morning and early afternoon heat and glare for those utilizing therapy while still
allowing a view of the courtyard.
The Winneshiek County Community Foundation has awarded us $4,125 toward
the construction of a pergola structure framing the large bay of windows in our
Main Dining Room, to also reduce the heat of the sun and make it a more enjoyable
place to sit and watch the seasons from the comfort of indoors. We will be
looking for additional donations to cover costs of this project above and beyond
the granted amount.
For more details about either of these projects or for information on donating to
Aase Haugen please contact our Director of Development, Don Wurtzel at
(563)382-4317, ext. 130, or email him at development@aasehaugen.com. Many
thanks to both of these generous agencies for supporting Aase Haugen Homes!

We apologize if we have
important to us!
A Memory of Kindness
What we do today can make an impact
whether we know it or not. The thoughtfulness
shown to AHH from the Robert & Elizabeth
Hillenbrand Estate stems from the care
her mother received while at AHH in 1984
through 1992. Elizabeth was born in Decorah
to Edith and Clarence Jacobson and they
made a bequest to AHH in their estate, remembering
the compassionate staff and quality
care provided to those she loved.
Their thoughtfulness can now help support
the ministry of healing, hope and companionship
throughout the Aase Haugen continuum
for others.
We appreciate their gift and continue to
strive to make AHH a memorable home for
all we serve.

This Christmas
Amaryllis bloomed
gorgeously for
days, a donation to
AHH by the family
of the late Thelma
Schroeder. The
blooms are a
fitting tribute;
amaryllis means
“sparkling eyes,”
and we certainly
miss seeing
Thelma’s.
You can make a difference!
During 2011 we asked for your help with our Annual Appeal to replace
a walk-in cooler/freezer and a whirlpool. A goal of $38,000 was set.
Thanks to you and 394 of your friends and neighbors we
surpassed that goal and raised $39,625. What a show of
support! The walk-in cooler/freezer has been installed and
the whirlpool is on order and should be installed in the
very near future.
The response to our Annual Appeal has been
tremendous and speaks volumes about people’s
feelings and commitment to Aase Haugen Homes.
Aase Haugen’s dream was to create an
environment where the elderly would be cared
for. Today, 97 years later, we are that home and
family that provide that care. But we need
your help to continue Aase’s dream, each of
you are part of the Aase Family. As part of
the Aase Family we rely on each of you to
provide your support.
Thank you for your continued support
and for serving as an example to others
about the importance of being a member
of the Aase Haugen Homes Family.
