Aase Haugen Auxiliary
The Auxiliary’s Annual Salad Luncheon Fund-raiser was
held May 3rd at St. Benedict’s Church. They sold 159
tickets and raised $1,075.50 toward the replacement of the
Chapel carpeting! With so many wonderful salads and
desserts, the event was certainly a treat for all attendees,
with a great cause to go with it! Many thanks to Salad
Luncheon co-chairs Mary Pat Jensen and Emmarene
Smock!
Shortly after the main freezer/cooler was replaced, an
auxiliary 3-door freezer in the dietary department stopped
working! In true form, the Auxiliary members immediately
moved to donate $2,500 toward the purchase of the
replacement freezer! Many thanks to these ladies for all
their support when Murphy’s law hits our equipment!
This summer, Ann Naslund and Glendalu Wuest will be
busy as co-chairs of the Ice Cream Social fund-raiser,
scheduled for Sunday, August 19th, from 3-6 pm. Proceeds
from the Ice Cream Social will also go toward replacing the
carpet in the Chapel of AHH. For more information,
Cooper Retires
Our resident dog, Cooper, has officially retired. After over 5 years of
dedicated service to AHH, we sadly say, “so long.” Cooper made so
many friends while at AHH and has touched so many people’s lives, that
we are truly blessed to have been able to count him among our family.
Lately, however, the stimulation of so many people seemed to
overwhelm him and he would
more frequently bark at visitors.
He has found a lovely new home
with one of our long-time team
members, Linda Root, CMA.
Linda will bring Cooper back
for occasional visits, but he can
now enjoy his retirement in the
peace of a single-family
household.
Cooper was a rescue dog,
saved from being “bait” in dog
fights. He came to AHH and
saved us from being lonely,
sharing love and companionship
wherever he went. He got many
rides on scooters, wheelchairs
and welcoming laps and the
Aase Mercantile even stocked
dog treats for those who loved
him. Many thanks, Cooper, for
your years of service to us!
Salad Luncheon Co-chair, Mary Pat Jensen,(l) shares the event
Sandra Kittelson, Mildred Jacobsen and Phyllis Green with
enthusiasm right before opening the doors at the May 3 Salad
Luncheon Fund-raiser. Through the Auxiliaary’s hard work,
wonderful salads and bright smiles, they chalked up another
successful event!
FROM THE AHH TEAM AASE HAUGEN HERALD
ECO team celebrates1 year of doing good
At AHH, we care for all our Aase
Family, but we also care for our
community, locally and globally.
Our ECO (Environmental Care
Options) Team members have invested
considerable time and energy
into finding new and improved ways
to recycle, reduce and reuse resources
in our daily operations.
We have utilized information from
Energy Audits to find ways to reduce
our usage of electricity. This
has lead to a facility-wide lighting
retrofit to energy-saving T8 fluorescent
bulbs and ballasts this Spring.
We are proud to report that this
change, in addition to the replacement
of the walk-in freezer/cooler,
has saved us about 8.1% of our total
electricity usage at AHH! Basically,
we’re saving almost as much every
year as we would use in one whole
month!
Our individual departments have
established several new initiatives
for increasing their recycling of plastics,
tin and paper. The Dietary Department
has reduced the amount of
disposable waste we produce by going
to real dishware and silverware
in our employee break room and
providing full gallons of milk for
our neighborhoods instead of individual
1/2 pint cartons (wax-coated
cartons are not recyclable).
Very recently, our Laundry Dept.
started hanging sheets out to dry on
a clothesline to reduce the electrical
use of our dryers. As a new program,
it was suggested, planned and
put into action by the staff who
work to implement the changes.
They are excited to be able to utilize
the fresh outdoors to dry the sheets
and the residents are looking forward
to it as well! They are anxious
to sleep on sheets with that fresh
from the clothesline smell!
We have also been looking into
water usage reduction at Aase
Haugen Homes. At Aase Haugen
Homes, a direct care giver may wash
their hands 50 times or more each
shift, which leads to a lot of water
being used. The ECO Team is in
the midst of a low-flow aerator test
to determine which flow is still effective
for hand-washing, while saving
the largest amount of water.
If we can cut our flow per minute
rates in half, each public faucet
could save almost 38,000 gallons a
year!
Our dedicated ECO Team continues
to plan and assess new initiatives
to make our community a better
place for future generations by
reducing the amount of resources
we use and the amount of nonrecyclable
waste we
produce!
In addition to reducing
waste, we have also
been trying to utilize
locally produced foods
in our menus. A couple
of weeks ago, Pam
Vick, Dietary Supervisor,
brought along
some residents for her
PAGE 3
Anita Ryan, Linda Fretheim and Jolene Wenthold of our Laundry Team are excited to use
the clothes lines to dry linens during the warmer weather months! They get such a nice,
fresh smell and drying in the sun saves electricity! Many residents have voiced their
appreciation for this new initiative, and can’t wait for their fresh sheets!
trip to the 1st Winneshiek County
Farmer’s Market of the season to
see what they could use at AHH.
They had a wonderful time browsing
the stands and looking over the
fresh produce and planning future
menus utilizing produce from
Farmer’s Market Vendors. “We’re
trying to look for produce that we
don’t have growing in Aase’s gardens,”
notes Pam. She noted that
spaghetti squash and bok choy are
two veggies they were looking into.
Pam adds, “The residents really enjoyed
the market and ran into several
people they knew! We will being
doing it more in the future.” Pictured
What could be causing such mixed reactions
from the crowd?? Just Larry Reis and his snakes!
Larry brought in a few harmless friends during his May educational seminar
on “Snakes” at AHH. Ray Fadness thinks they’re cute and smiles,
but his wife Arlene has a decidedly different opinion!
Celebrating the Journey
Darlyene Iverson(l) has a good time with Kulla
Mincks(r)! In the homey setting of MCAL, she has
her privacy when she wants it and a fulfilling
social calendar with her fellow tenants, visitors
and guests when she’s ready for that as well. Spacious
apartments, caring, friendly workers and a
comfortable routine make each day a good day!
(RIGHT) These lovely ladies are pretty darned proud of their handiwork,
When the spring crop of strawberries came in, the crew in
memory care assisted living (MCAL) found themselves with a
wonderful dilemma, wondering what to do with such good
produce! As it turns out, Julia Tallman , pictured left, has
made jams and jellies for years! She gladly stepped up to help
with the stirring and cooking to make a fantastic strawberry
preserve!
Not only did she enjoy making
it, but she also enjoyed eating it
with her friends and neighbors!
There are eight tenants currently
living in MCAL who enjoy living
and working together as a true
household, with each person doing
as they are able and as they
enjoy. Workers are on hand to
assist tenants in MCAL with their
housekeeping and laundry as they
need.
They have a lovely, secure
courtyard area when they can
tend flowers, plants and enjoy
some much appreciated sunshine!
June marks the fifth anniversary
of MCAL’s opening, with five
years of success and a bright future
ahead. Many thanks to all
the family and friends in the community
for the continued support
of this valuable and needed branch of service!
One thing we did learn from Julia’s jam; it takes patience
and a lot of attention—just like anything worthwhile!

Christian environment which nurtures
the body, mind and soul, leading to
the nurturing and dedication of our
SOCIAL NETWORK AASE HAUGEN HERALD
Long-range vision
With so many local and world-wide crises vying for
our attention, it is sometimes hard to look at where we
are and appreciate the hard work, visionary planning
and faith-filled determination that made the community
around us possible. No one ever said starting something
new or following through on something ahead-of
-its-time was ever easy. But we must applaud the singular
voice who began a trend, who bucked “the norm”
and stood up for something better. They, who rallied
support for a noble and heart-felt cause, who would
not settle for good enough, but forged their own path
for the betterment of others, for the good of many, but
not necessarily for their own immediate benefit.
Such was the vision of
Aase Haugen, our
founder, that no individual,
simply because they
lived a long life, be left
with no one to turn to.
Simply because God had
not called them yet, people
of “good moral character,”
of “sound mind
and body,” people who
knew the grief of loss as
they watched their dear
families pass away,
they should still
know compassion and community.
Aase Haugen,
our Founder.
Such was the cause taken up by 14 local
churches, as they shared Aase’s vision, as
they accepted her gift of land, planned the
home and
raised the
funds to have it
built. Such was
the support
given from
quarters and
dimes, from
widows and
families who
believed in this
vision, who
wanted to see
ministry realized
for the
PAGE 7
betterment of the senior community. From that support,
over $32,000 was raised in 3 years (over $780,000
in today’s money!)
They built the home—a grand home where all were
welcome, where people participated in caring for the
home, the farm, the animals and each other. Where
prayer was as important as meal-time, and sitting down
to visit was expected when you rode the train out to
“Haugendale.” Where each person was a part of something
bigger than they could be alone, where they could
be a success—together with others who could offset
what they could not accomplish alone.
I believe it is always time to celebrate the past as we
look forward to our future. We could not be here today
were it not for the sweat and ingenuity of those
who came before us. Were it not for the determination,
planning and enthusiasm of our founders, our
builders and our leaders we would not be here today,
offering a wide variety of care for the seniors in our
community. Yet here we are—serving our mission, and
our residents, every day.
Many thanks are owed to those brave and sturdy
individuals who stayed the course. Today, we celebrate
their accomplishments, which have allowed us to
branch into further lines of service in our mission to
serve the senior population throughout the aging process—throughout
the journey of getting older. We celebrate
our leadership from our Corporate Churches,
guiding our path through the years.
As we plan out our future steps, our own long-range
planning with our board members and staff, we are
mindful of the vision, the drive and the successes that
have come before us, taking as much care to forge the
way for future generations as best we can.
Thank you for being a part of the Aase Haugen Family
- for being a part of almost 100 years of quality care,
compassion, healing and hope.
new MasterCare whirlpool tub. Several
more staff were involved in the training
session as well.
families will be asked to participate in the process by
selecting the color for their room from a select list of
color options.
As you contemplate your 2012 donations, please keep
in mind the resident room “make-overs” at Aase. Your
contribution will directly impact the lives of those we
care for – your gift will help provide each resident with a
newly decorated and renovated room. What a difference
your gift can make!

The Aase Haugen Family
Like all families, it’s members all bring something
a little different to the table, making memories
and cherishing time spent working together for a
common good. Below, Jan Tyler-Blanchard and
Marian Ness plant a tub of pansies in our courtyard.
No wonder they are smiling!
Above and right, volunteer Jeff
Babcock (leaning over) began
his relationship at Aase Haugen
Homes playing cards with
some die-hard card players, and
ended up making lasting connections
with true friends. Jeff
brought in cake and held birthday
parties for his card-playing
buddies, Ron Rustad, above
with his wife Kathy, and Lawrence Blong, right.
When asked why he did it, Jeff simply answered,
Jan Berg was more
than happy to welcome
this little boy,
to the Aase Haugen
her newest addition
to the family after
he was born April
the best smiles!
Many thanks to all those who
Work of art at work
Elizabeth Lorentzen’s Art Class had a vision
last fall to create their own mixed media
mural of a Prairie scene. Little did
they know then that it would become a
vivid part of the scene at Aase Haugen
Homes this spring! Thanks to some
friendly connections and the great artistic
mural created by very visionary students,
we are pleased to have the Prairie Mural
gracing one of our busiest halls! Every
day residents walk right by the mural, admiring
its cheerful, bright floral motif and
whimsical scenes of prairie life for insects
and flowers. The bright colors and happy
subjects make each day just a little brighter
for those walking past. Many thanks to
the students for so generously donating
their artwork to us! Pictured are the artists,
left to right: Austin Gunderson, James
Heying, Liana Pape, Erik Nelson, Peter
Hansen, Brittany Hansen, Toby Engelhart,
Scott Zafft (sitting out from the line a bit),
Dakota Bird and Dan Hyke. Many thanks
to these talented young people!
AHH teams help give back
The staff at Aase Haugen Homes are familiar with cancer and the
effect it has on families. Many have personal experiences dealing with
cancer, and many others have seen the toll it takes on the people we
serve.
When several of our staff put a team together in memory
of a loved one, they brought their enthusiasm and their
hope into Aase Haugen Homes as well. You may have
noticed the purple feet trailing the halls, as people bought a
footprint in honor of other staff, residents and family
members. Each dollar going to fight cancer.
We must thank Christina Jump in our housekeeping
department for taking up the banner and rallying to fight
cancer and help fund research through the 2012 Relay
for Life for the American Cancer Society.
“Kathy’s Meso Mashers” team raised over $125 and raised even
more awareness for Relay for Life, held in Decorah on June 9th. We
are so proud of all the good our staff does both inside our walls and
outside!
Coming up is the Aase’s Angels Team collecting for the Alzheimer’s
Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s to be held in Sept. We are
accepting team members and raising funds for this worthy cause as
well. For more details, please feel free to contact Lynn Monroe at
(563)382-4317, ext. 112.

You can make a difference!
By Don Wurtzel, Director of Development
What a difference fresh paint can make. What a difference a new floor can make.
Removing dark paneling and replacing it with a newly painted wall can make a
huge difference.
Do you agree?
place to be! Everyone had a wonderful meal in
gracious company! Pictured are: (l-r, clockwise
If you agree, you will be happy to hear the decision of the Aase
Haugen Homes Foundation Board. At their June 6th meeting
they voted to begin the process of giving resident rooms a
“make-over”. They voted that 80% of all funds raised
during the 2012 Annual Appeal will be used for this
project and the remaining 20% will be applied toward
the Aase Endowment.
Initially, the rooms located in the original part of
the building (constructed in 1964) will be “redecorated”.
It is anticipated that the process to
redecorate the oldest 73 of our 99 rooms may
take 2 to 3 years to complete. Time frame to
complete the redecorating process will depend
upon the amount of money we raise.
Preliminary budget suggests $2,000 to $2,500
for each room “make over”.
Room “make-overs” will include: new paint
on all walls and ceiling; removal of paneling
