And should cityofficials be directing residentswith that decision?Disaster and fire preparedness,as well as publicsafety, were the primarytopics discussed during alively conversation heldOct. 3 with the eight MalibuCity Council candidates.The two-hour conversationheld via Zoomwas hosted by the MalibuDemocratic Club andPoint Dume NeighborhoodWatch. Moderatingwere club president JaneAlbrecht, and former MalibuMayor Pamela ConleyUlich.The candidates are SteveUhring, Mark Wetton,Doug Stewart, Bruce Silverstein,Andy Lyon, PaulGrisanti, Rick Mullen (theincumbent) and Lance Simmens.Many of the candidatesdiscussed their own personalexperience during theWoolsey Fire, and whetherit would be wise to stayhome instead of followingevacuation orders.Residents have been criticalabout being ordered toevacuate during the WoolseyFire, saying that theirhomes could’ve been savedif they stayed put.Lyon, a residential realestate agent, said if hehadn’t stayed behind duringthe Woolsey Fire, hewouldn’t be sitting at hishouse right now.He described watchingfirefighters drive up hisdriveway and thinking theywere going to do something.But instead, theyturned around and droveaway.
