FIG. 47. George Woodall's Andromache, 1902. Andromache was the wife of Hector, son of King Priam of Troy. In Homer's Iliad, all of Andromache's relatives died during or immediately after the capture of Troy by the Greeks. Andromache herself was taken prisoner and given to Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles, who took her back to his home in Epirus. The plaque is inscribed "ANDROMACHE" at the bottom of the frame, and it is signed "Geo. Woodall" on the pavement. The panel, completed in October 1902, was sold in February 1917.

It is decorated with an overall Chinese floral and geometric pattern that includes the symbol for "long life and happiness."
