Shriners Hospitals for Children ® is committed to
providing what we call wrap-around care. It means we
maintain a family-centered approach and are concerned
with our patients’ overall health and well-being.
This can mean different things for different patients. It
can include finding ways to help them play with their
friends, enhance their education, enjoy a hobby and
live more independently. The staff of Shriners Hospitals
for Children is known for taking the time to listen
to our patients and families, learning of both their
medical needs, as well as their hopes and dreams.
First Lady Alice Smith believes that giving our
patients every possible advantage and opportunity to
achieve helps them to become Rising Stars, and she
is dedicated to strengthening their incredible spirits
and abilities, helping them to have full, satisfying and
productive lives.
TREATING UNIQUE NEEDS
To help each child who comes to Shriners Hospitals
for Children become as independent as possible,
we often introduce and provide assistive devices,
especially through our various therapy programs. We
provide our patients with physical,
occupational, speech and
recreational therapy.
Assistive devices can range from
items to help learn or regain the
ability to walk, to computer-driven
augmentations for those with speech
difficulties, to items that help children
learn to feed or dress themselves. Assistive
devices also include mobility aids, such
as crutches, walkers and wheelchairs.
We can also customize the devices to fit
the specific needs of individual patients.
The Rising Stars fundraising program will
support these efforts.
INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY
We also use assistive technology in our therapy
programs, through the availability of various systems
such as body weight supported gait training and
functional electrical stimulation bikes. We are also
concerned with our patients’ quality of life, and work
to provide, or make them aware of, adaptive recreation
opportunities and items to provide additional kidfriendly
mobility, such as adaptive toy cars or bikes.

our patients move from the Shriners Hospitals
system to successful, independent adult lives.”

The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
Nobles, Dear Fellow Ladies and Nobles; Friends:
Who would have ever imagined that this great country of ours would ever experience
a pandemic? The COVID-19 pandemic has caused much turmoil, making the past
seven months of 2020 difficult to deal with. None of us were prepared for something
like this. Just trying to deal with the daily challenges that we face has put us all under
great stress.
Due to the pandemic here are some events Rajah was unable to have: Good Friday’s
Breakfast, Hospital Crusade, Shrine Night at the Phillies, Pote’s Picnic, Ladies Basket
Bingo, Pretzel Bowl, Sportsmen’s Raffle, Pote’s Cruise and our Weekly Bingo.
Despite these trying times we must make plans to move forward in our personal
lives and at Rajah Shrine. We can no longer look at what was done in the past and
the reasons it can’t be done now. We need to think of ways it can be done during this
pandemic while complying with the existing recommendations. Your Divan has not
been idle. You can rest assured that they have been working toward the goal of keeping
our Nobles and their familes safe. They are busy considering various options on how
to get Rajah moving forward. We are trying to get us back to the original purpose of the Shrine “having
fun while helping kids.”
I pray that this message finds you and your family well. May God bless you and keep you safe.

different normal than before. I encourage you to participate in
your Rajah Shrine’s events. Your club and unit need you. Your
Shrine Family needs you. And most important you need your
Rajah Shrine to get back to having fun with each other.

MASONS GIVING
BACK TO THE
COMMUNITY
DURING PANDEMIC
(Excerpts from Freemason magazine)
Lehighton Lodge No. 621 sponsored a free, to-go spaghetti dinner for the community
north of Allentown. Brother Robert Neff, D.D.G.M-45 and Rajah Shriner, said “I
thought of giving something back to the community. They have always supported us
in our fund drives, and with these difficult times, we felt like we should help out.” The
brothers at our Lehighton lodge were all for the project.
It was a total team effort, Robert said. “We placed a sandwich board advertising the
dinner at two different locations and put an ad in the local newspaper.” The brothers set up a large tent in the lodge parking lot,
where participants could drive up and pick up their meal of spaghetti with meat sauce and salad with a choice of dressing. The
event ran for three hours. “We wanted to be safe, so the meals were boxed up to go.” Robert said. “The effort was successful with
205 meals served.” Lodge members also raised $450 in donations, which they donated to the Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry
in Lehighton. It was a free meal, but people showed their appreciation by donating money.
More than 15 lodge members, many of them Shriners, helped prepare the food ahead of time, wearing masks and gloves. The
lodge spent about $300 in groceries for the dinner. Typically, the lodge sponsors several events a year, including two fish fries and
two sit-down spaghetti dinners, but they were all canceled due to COVID-19. They raise around $1,000 to $1,200 at each event.

Robert is thankful that the lodge was able to do something for
the community, despite the circumstances. He has been a Mason
for 44 years and is active in the Shrine. Last year he brought in 10
new members thru the Hillbillies. He is also a Tin Lizzie. He says
he appreciates the fellowship aspect of brotherhood and “doing good
things for other people.”

Camping is fun, even if you have to distance yourself from friends. That is what the Rajah Caravaners
have been up to. We have enjoyed several outings together (within proper distancing guidelines) over the
summer, with several more to go.
RVing, and camping, have become more popular of late, due to the health scare situation we are in.
This is evidenced by the uptick in RV and camper sales. It allows us to travel a little more freely than
many people are willing or able to do. As you can rest easy overnight, without concern about where you
rest your head.
Caravaners are looking into some enhancements to the Oasis Campground to make our overnight
stays more enjoyable and secure. Some supplemental area lighting is being investigated, as well as a few
grounds maintenance tools and storage space for them. We have added a permanent picnic table to the
facility.
With all this in mind, there has not been a better time to go camping. Come and join us for some fresh
air and fellowship.

John Grumbein
It is my sad duty to report that for the first time in a long time your Chanters have experienced the
loss of two Nobles recently. As reported in the last issue of Rajah News, we marked the passing of Noble
Donald G. (Punky) Miller and this issue we sorrowfully inform you of the passing of Noble Nevin C.
Miller. Although not related to each other by family, they were related by their devotion as Nobles of
Rajah Shrine and a love of music.
Both Nobles sang in the tenor section of the Chanters and each had a very distinctive voice and style
of singing. Noble Nevin joined the heavenly chorus on July 20, 2020 and was praised for his kindness to
others, his devotion to family and friends and for his love of music. The Rajah Chanters sang a farewell
tribute at his Memorial Service and although his voice was still, we are sure he could hear the harmony of our
voices in sweet accord in tribute to a true man of faith. In his over 50 years of service to his fellow Nobles,
Nevin served as President and held several other offices in the Rajah Chanters as he was always proud to uphold the dignity and
honor of singing alongside his fellow Masonic Brethren.
“WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT. “
Well, another couple of months have passed and we are still rehearsing and getting ready for, what we hope will be, a busy fall
and Christmas season. Our President, Dwayne Miller, is working diligently to see that, when the time is right, we will be able to go
out and participate in a few concerts and parades. Our conductor and accompanist, Bruce Rohrbach, has been leading us through
rehearsals and we have even broken out a few Christmas Songs.
Otherwise, due to the recent circumstances, President Dwayne has appointed Noble Dennis Snoke to the position of Treasurer
and long-time Secretary Shel Rissinger has stepped down from that position and Dave DeTurk has been appointed to fill that role,
in addition to his duties as our Unit Director. Additionally, as the MASA convention was cancelled in Virginia Beach, the MASA-
Chanters decided to hold over the same officers until September 2021, thus Dave will stay as First VP for another year.
And as has been reported earlier, we are slowly getting back to normal at the Rajah Complex. Some of the activities and planned
events that have been cancelled or moved may take place in the future. But, for now, please stay safe and be careful.
In the meantime, please be safe and keep a song in your heart. And if singing is in your blood, please let us know; we’ll be glad
to supply you with a folder full of fun and entertaining music to sing with us.
I stated in my last article that I would
have more to report in this article. Well,
I guess that went out the window.
We went from being able to have
50% capacity at the time of that writing
to getting the rug pulled out from in
under us and going back to 25% a few
weeks later. I’ll never begin to figure it
out.
Our August meeting was a wash or
should I say washout. September was much better with having a
good number of members at the meeting including Illustrious Sir
Marv Miller and his Lady Marie. The Illustrious Sir brought with
him members of the Divan past and present. We all had a great
time.
On a sad note, we lost another one of our long-time members,
Frank Frutchey, to the Black Camel. Frank was a good horn player
and a lot of fun. Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years Janet,
two daughters, Sue and Judy, and a son, Tom.
I hope to have more for my next article. Always remember to
keep supporting the children in our Hospitals.

I guess we can read this letter with some hope of change but it remains an uphill battle of uncertainty.
Being an aide for the Potentate has given me an opportunity to visit other clubs and get a feel of what they
are trying to do in dealing with the regulations as they are at this time. As Vice President dealing with all the
issues can be quite frustrating, I'll be more than happy to turn back the reins to President Mike when things
for him settle down.
To some degree of normalcy, we’re returning to making sauerkraut next Friday. Two-hundred heads of
cabbage will be processed for our fall/winter sale. If you need some, we still have some remaining from our
last batch which quite a few though it was the best batch we ever made.
Beyond the sauerkraut there are some fishing trips remaining and we hope to hear of a few comedies of
errors to qualify for the prestigious Ryan Award given at our Christmas dinner. In addition, we are working
hard to put together a dinner meeting in October with our Ladies and we are hoping for a guest speaker who
earned his stripes fishing on the pro bass tour several years ago.
With regulations changing this month, we hope to be able to have a Ladies Night and Christmas Party at our December meeting.
Maybe some of the other clubs could join us since the percent of people participating goes to 50%. Stay tuned for further info.
No matter what we plan has no chance for success unless the members participate. I know people have concerns about being in
public, but I assure you we are doing all we can to create safe environments. Be part of the solution and not just a nay sayer. In all
the meetings I have been with the Potentate Marv, he has encouraged people not to say, “We can’t,” but encouraged them to find a
way to get the job done. The rest is up to us!!!
One last item that I would like to share is that the Pote is one of our own and a great turnout for the testimonial {roast} would
be great. It’s been a tough year so let’s have some FUN!!!

AN EAGLE FLIES
OVER RAJAH
AN ASPIRING EAGLE SCOUT
PARTNERS WITH SHRINERS

Dylan Confer has been in scouting since grade school. He is now a senior at
Parkland H.S. He is a member of Troop 1600, Jordan UCC, Allentown.
During his last year in school, Dylan is working towards the highest rank a scout
can achieve, that of an Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout takes perseverance
and work. Boy Scouts must earn all the ranks in order. Among the seven steps in
attaining the Eagle Scout badge, Dylan has earned the required 21 merit badges,
and he has served in leadership positions for at least 6 months, having managed
Cub Scout Dens as an example. One of the most difficult requirements is to
propose, plan, and carry out an Eagle Service project. The project must benefit
the organization that it is done for.
That service project was how Dylan came to be involved with Rajah Shrine.
Dylan was aware of the Shriners and the work they do supporting the Children’s Hospitals. He also is friends with Wayne Grumbein’s
son Jarrett Nguyen, so he was aware of a lot of Shrine activities that Jarrett’s dad was involved in.

Dylan decided that he would like to do his service project for the Shriners.
“I thought it would be a neat thing to help out,” he said, “since they do
so much for children and it’s all on a volunteer basis.” Eventually the
relationship with the Grumbein’s led to John Grumbein, Wayne’s father,
helping make the connection with Rajah.
A meeting was held at the complex where Dylan, his mother April,
and father Douglas met with the Board of Directors. Dylan explained that
one of the requirements of attaining his Eagle Scout rank was managing
a volunteer service project. His request was met with knowing smiles as
several Rajah Shriners are Eagles Scouts and have gone through the long
process in attaining their Eagle Scout badges themselves.
The outcome of the meeting was a plan that included refurbishing one
of the buildings at the complex. Les worked with Dylan on the details and,
within a few days, the project came to life.
Dylan managed a team of up to 9 scouts, his scout master, his younger
brother, and a few Shriners such as Bruce Denlinger and Les Werley. They
did power washing and painting of the residence building.
Les Werley commented that “Dylan did an admiralable job in managing this diverse group
of workers and, in doing so, he gained valuable experience.” The experience will stand him
well in his journey to becoming at Eagle Scout.
The requirements are difficult and only about 6.5% of all eligible Boy Scouts earn their
Eagle rank.
Since it takes so much work, why do boys do it? Some are mature enough to understand
the impact that having the award will have on their lives. Others are encouraged by their
Scoutmasters and by their parents. Dylan’s parents are involved in his scouting. His mother
April is on committee with Troop 1600, Minsi Trail Council, North Valley District.
Scouting and Masonry share common values. And well they should because The Boy Scouts
of America was founded in 1910 by Masonic Brothers Daniel Carter Beard, William D. Boyce,
and James E. West, along with Mr. Ernest Seton. These founding fathers succeeded in creating one

of America’s finest youth organizations by introducing the values of Freemasonry. And
Masons have stayed involved in scouting.
The Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award is a Boy Scout Community
Organization Award, used by community organizations to honor their volunteers for
their involvement in Scouting. Grand Lodge awards an Eagle Scout Commendation
Certificate for Scouts in Pennsylvania.
We wish Dylan success in his quest. We understand that he is just a few months away
from attaining his goal and becoming an Eagle Scout. He will be in good company, as
many successful people in business, politics, sports, and even NASA are Eagle Scouts.
Among them is one of this writer’s personal heroes: Neil Armstrong, the first man on
the moon was an Eagle Scout, as was President Gerald Ford, and movie director Steven
Spielberg. The most successful Eagle Scout (by net worth) is Sam Walton, founder of
Wal-Mart.
Upon graduation, Dylan hopes to enter college and study engineering. In our opinion
he is on his way to a successful life and career. The Boy Scouts of America produce
many fine young men, including Eagle Scouts, who may become members and leaders
in our great Fraternity. Maybe someday we will see Dylan as a leader in Rajah Shrine.

LEGION OF HONOR
Don’t hold your breath, but things are gradually coming back to normal. So far, it’s been one step
forward, then half a step back. Hang in there and keep your fingers crossed.
On the plus side, our Commander’s Ball was a big success. We had 62 people in attendance and I
didn't hear a single complaint. Doubletree Hotel did a fabulous job. Accommodations were very good,
food was very good, and the entire staff couldn’t have been better. I understand that Doubletree also did
an excellent job for the Potentate’s Ball.
The entertainment was also very good. No stage play, but a very excellent magician who walked
around from table to table and did his thing. We’ve all seen magicians, but this guy was outstanding.
Here’s another reminder for that trip we have planned to the International Tattoo in Norfolk, Virginia.
It is scheduled for April 16 & 17, 2021. A flyer will be sent as soon as we have all the information. Those
who had scheduled for the 2020 trip that got
cancelled get first dibs. There will be a limited
number of reservations, probably around 50, so
get yours in early. This trip is restricted to adults
only. If you’ve never attended this event, give it serious thought. I have
yet to hear a negative comment from those who have attended in years
past. Everyone thought it was great.
Our next Legion event (hopefully) is the Past Commander’s Night
on October 13. Keep your fingers crossed. Unfortunately, cancellations
this year have been the name of the game. This is our annual pork &
sauerkraut, hot dogs, and dessert dinner. This year, all our Ladies are
invited. Cost to all attendees (except Past Commanders) is $5.00.

LEHIGH SHRINE CLUB
Fellow Nobles,
What a few months we have had! The only things we can count on are surprises and the complete
alterations of any plans. I should have written this article over the Labor Day weekend because we
normally leave for MASA the day after Labor Day. Hopefully next year?
It has been decided by the Officers of our Club that all current Officers will serve in their current office
throughout 2021. We are all grateful for the willingness of our Nobles to serve another term for the benefit
of our Club.
We are still intending to have our Annual Golf Outing on Wednesday, October 14th at the Iron Lakes
Country Club. A flyer was e-mailed on September 10th with the necessary information.
Our Annual Ladies Night is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at the Shepherd Hills Golf Club. It is
the same location we used in 2019. Their restaurant, The Foundation, did an excellent job and we received many positive comments.
All Shriners and their Ladies are welcome. We will have live music by The Exes.

The Potentate’s Ball
The event was held on August 8th at the Doubletree Hotel in Reading.
Seventy nobles and ladies were in attendance. Assistant Rabban Joe Hagan
Sr. was master of ceremonies. After the official introductions a delicious
dinner was served. Illustrious Sir Marvin Miller was introduced by Joe as our
Pandemic Potentate.
Ill. Sir took the comment in stride as the audience appreciated the humor.
Ill. Sir Marvin spoke to the assemblage about the year so far and his hope that
things will get back to some semblance of order in the near future.
There were two special guests in attendance, and Ill. Sir introduced first
Keith McKnight, PP Zembo and Past President of MASA. Keith spoke briefly
then handed Ill. Sir a donation to the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia.
The second guest, Ronald Gardner, Potentate of Crescent Temple, came up
to the podium next. The two potentates then passed Honorary memberships
certificates between them. The evening was
capped by dance music. All in all, it was a
great event thanks to the hard work of Chief
Aide Gregory Miller and Lady Sharon who
created the theme and designed much of
the decor, Mic Frey and Lady Beth who
always do a great job with decorations,
Donald Loos who handled reservation and,
as always, the aides supported the event.

As I’m writing this
report, I am reminded how
much attending MASA has become a part of our
yearly Shriner routine and how Lady Kay and I look forward to attending each
year. Hopefully, the convention will be up and running again in 2021. I certainly
hope so.
On a brighter note, the Tin Lizzies held their annual clam bake on September
19th at Bady’s Grove in Wind Gap. We had seventy plus nobles and ladies in
attendance including Ills. Sir Marvin Miller and
Lady Marie. There was lots of sunshine, food, and music. Everyone had a great
time.

Wishing Well brings in $1,700.
In this time of shutdowns, and laid
off workers, I found it almost a miracle
that one of our collection boxes at a retail establishment in Easton brought in over
$1,700 In the just three months. We call them Wishing Wells and the one at Millers
Hardware in West Easton, consistently brings in large sums but the August total just
blew us away. Bob Miller said he admires the Shriners and the work our Children’s
Hospitals do. He says any tips, etc. he receives go into the box as well as customer
donations. The club has presented Mr. Miller with a Certificate of Appreciation for
his contributions over of the years. But this contribution is one for the record. All
proceeds from our Wishing Wells go directly to the hospital fund.
As always, it’s great to be a Shriner!

The year had been a slow start for transporting patients to Shrine Hospital; at least it was after the
Pandemic stuck us. But we are beginning to pick up the pace again.
Unfortunately, we have suffered a setback in fund raising to pay for the transport vehicle rentals, etc.
Our fund-raising raffle was canceled primarily due to cancelation of MASA, where we made the majority
of our income. Moreover, donations have dwindled as well. If that sounds like a plea for help, it is!
Our President, Noble Eric Kissinger, is planning on holding our November 19 meeting as scheduled.
We will hold elections for next year’s officers.

Legion of Honor Commander’s Ball
Honoring Commander Clinton J, Starkey and Lady Betty
This year’s ball was held at the Doubletree by Hilton in Reading on August 29. Commander Clinton Starkey and Lady Betty
presided over an elegant affair. The evening was hosted by Joseph Hagan.
Guests included the Commander of MASA Shrine
Legions of Honor, Commander Frederick Roland
with his lady Judy. After dinner, 2019 Commander
Mike Quinn gave a toast to the Legion and all who
served.
When it was his turn at the podium, Commander
Starkey began by thanking all of those nobles who
have supported him throughout the year. He gave a
special thanks to Past Commander Bill Remo, PP,
who he credited with encouraging him to get in line to
be Commander. Commander Starkey’s talk included
a heartfelt recounting of his time in the service, no
doubt causing many in the room to recount their own
experiences. Commander Starkey closed by thanking
Jim Cocuzza and his committee for a fine job.

Fredrick Rolland, Leon Collins, PC, Mike Quinn,
PC, and Robert McCormack, PC.
The evening was capped by magician Matty
Whipple.
He is the official magician for the Philadelphia
Phillies. Matty had many of us shaking our heads and
asking, “how did he do that?” It was a memorable
evening made the more so by the fact that it has been
a long summer with only the recent Pote’s Ball to
bring Rajah Shriners together to socialize with our
ladies and fellow nobles.

Greetings from your String Band,
Hope everyone is safe and healthy. We’re going to miss the trip to Virginia Beach, playing in the
Hospitality Room and the parade. Looking forward to next year for a bigger and better parade.
A shout out to our secretary, Tom Dietrich. He has done a great job keeping us informed. As I have
always heard it said in Blue Lodge and during my time as Master of Barger Lodge, the secretary is the
backbone of the Lodge and makes the Master look good. Tom makes us look good by making sure we
have enough musicians on the float, by scheduling all the events, and by making sure we are at the right
place at the right time. Thanks for all your dedication, Tom. He sent out an agenda about two weeks prior
to our August 12th meeting. You could attend the meeting in person or reply by email to the various
matters of business.
Business at hand:
- Thank you, Chris, for handling this year’s float inspection.
- Our annual September picnic was cancelled.
- As we have done in prior years, we will again be donating to the Ladies Basket Bingo in October.
- Our annual donation to the Children’s Hospital was discussed. Considering the situation, having had no income this year since
all parades were cancelled, we will still make a donation which will be taken out of our treasury.
- All were in agreement to cancel the annual joint Christmas Party with Concert Band.
Officer elections:
All officers elected or appointed have agreed to remain in their positions for 2021: PresidentMike Gubich, 1st VP Larry
Christman, 2nd VP Mike Shannon, Secretary Tom Dietrich and Treasurer Joe Aulenbach.
Next meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 14. Details will follow. A 2021 activity schedule was sent by email of our
meeting dates and tentative parades.
As always, there is an open-door invitation for musicians to play in the String Band. If you play an instrument, come out to
a rehearsal on the second Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Complex. If you need to brush up, we’ll help you get started. Just come to
rehearsal with your instrument.
With the support of our Ladies, our purpose is that we might play our instruments so that some day a physically challenged child
may walk and play again.

LEBANON SHRINE CLUB
It is with a heavy heart that the Lebanon Co. Shrine Club is announcing the passing of our Club
President, Past Potentate Eugene Heiges, Zembo Shrine Potentate in 2011. Gene loved being a Shriner
and will be remembered for his willingness to do what needed to be done and for his kind and gentle
manner. He will be missed. First Vice President Jim Foultz has taken over the club leadership.
The club has not met since February, but we are up and running again the 4th Monday September 28
at 6:30 p.m. with ladies always invited. We will be meeting at Governor Wolf's favorite Lebanon County
restaurant, Heisey’s Diner, Rt. 72 North of Lebanon. Dress is casual.
At this point it is hard to plan activities with any type of certainty, but we must all give it our best shot.
Our Potentate set the example and overcame huge obstacles to have his ball/dinner/gathering, whatever it
was required to be named. We cannot just say we cannot do something, get discouraged and give up. In this
tough time, we need to reach out to our brothers, work together and get it done, somehow.
Restrictions are not an excuse, just cause for a little more thought.
Our Shrine has great facilities and some of the strongest and best people anywhere. Let us take this opportunity and utilize them
both and move forward. Heed the advice from Illustrious Marv, follow his example, and make Rajah Shrine better than ever.

PEOPLE IN THE CRISIS THROUGH
VIDEO SERMONS

It started in March with a need to reach his parishioners at the Zion Lehigh
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alburtis when the pandemic hit. At first,
Reverend Newhart started curbside sermons. But, along with the inconvenience,
it was dependent on the weather. A friend of a member of the church, who owns
a video production company, Scott Stonebeck, suggested that Rev. Newhart
could videotape the sermons and air them online via YouTube. The first
sermon they taped was the Easter Sunday sermon. The results and feedback
were encouraging. David said, “Access to the videos addressed the feelings
of anxiety that was being experienced by our older members who have been
attending this church every Sunday for years.”
Soon after the first taping aired, David asked Ill. Sir Marvin Miller about
the possibility of adding the video sermons to Rajah’s website to share them
with the membership. Ill. Sir Marvin liked the idea and a link was added to the
rajahshrine.org that connects directly to the sermons on YouTube.
The ability to videotape his sermons in the church has allowed Rev. Newhart
to expand the content of the sermons adding depth and detail. In fact, he often
portrays characters from the stories within the sermons. He has played several biblical and historical figures such as the Apostle
Paul, Pontius Pilate, and Martin Luther in some of the videos. He says he has played a lot of interesting characters over the years at
different churches and different events.
The acting comes easily to David, as he has a background in theatre. He appeared in plays while attending Susquehanna
University. In fact, he has an interesting history that relates back to his days in New York City when he was an intern at St Peters
Church at 54th Street and Lexington Avenue. He ran an “Off Off-Broadway” theatre in the basement. The church had several
famous Broadway actors as members and many that frequented it. And some of these actors would stage lunch hour mini plays in
the church basement. Celebrities Rev. Newhart met that frequented the theatre were F. Murry Abrams, Dustin Hoffman, Donald
Pleasence and James Earl Jones, to name a few. They also had jazz sessions at the church
on Sunday nights where he met Dizzy Gilespie, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington and
many others. He wished he could have stayed but it was only a one-year internship. David
says he enjoyed that time in New York and the relationships and experience contributed to
his education in the ministry.
Over the years David has acted in dinner theatres in Reading and has appeared in several
plays in community theatres in the area. He has done several degrees in Consistory over
the years, for which he received the Masonic Service Award. David says he is a frustrated
actor at heart.
The video sermons have been a success but David’s participation will soon be coming
to an end.
After 50 years in the ministry, he
is in semi-retirement and moving to
the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.

THE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY
Paul entreats the community in Corinth “…do not accept the grace of God in vain” and quotes Isaiah
“At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of Salvation.”
Paul is trying to get the Corinthians out of a common happening with us, that is becoming set in
our ways and comfortable with the status quo. If you accept God’s grace, then take it to its fulfillment,
and make it active in your world. Don’t just receive God’s grace you must pass it on. God’s grace is
meaningless until you give it away to others. When you understand the nature of this God we love, then
you will see why that is necessary.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 61: 1-2 “ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to
bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to
the captives and opening of the prison to those who are bound…” These are the basics of what Jesus did in
his lifetime as the Son of God. Yet when he read these lines from Isaiah in the synagogue in his home town
Nazareth, the people became angry and put him out of the city and tried to throw him of a cliff. Jesus just
disappeared in their midst. It is through Jesus that we received God’s grace which brings us salvation.
PROVOST GUARD
Since our last report, a couple of months ago, little has changed with your Provost Guard, except to say
that we are sorely disappointed that we had to cancel our annual All You Care to Eat Spaghetti Dinner on
Saturday, October 10 due to the current Covid-19 situation. BUT take heart, we promise that one way or
another we WILL have two dinners in 2021. The dates will be confirmed soon, and we will report them to
you in the next edition of the Rajah News.
In the meantime, I can report that, although it has been rough going at times, we managed to hold a
couple of meetings and are making plans to continue, as we look forward to a great 2021.
Since most of the events scheduled for this year have been cancelled, we are really looking for a
wonderful and busy time in the future. As none of the major activities will be held, we will continue to meet.
Just in case something does happen, we’ll be ready for it.
As you know the MASA convention in Virginia Beach had been cancelled, but thanks to the advances
in modern communications, the MASA-Provost Guard will be holding a virtual meeting later in September,
presided over by Colonel Dennis Loch, of Rajah Provost, who will relinquish the reigns to the next in line,
Noble Joseph A. Orlando of Crescent Temple. Also moving up will be Ill. Sir Jared R. Kichline, PP, Rajah Shrine, to the position
of First Lieutenant.
We are also sending best wishes to our President Bob Himes who is recovering from a fall in which he broke his arm. Get well
soon, Bob, and we look forward to seeing you real soon.
With just a few months left in this year, it will be great to turn the calendar and welcome a new year, one hopefully filled with
more activities than 2020. And on that note,
we know it has been a disappointing year for
our Illustrious Sir Marv Miller and his lady,
Marie, but take heart that, under some rather
extremely difficult circumstances, you did a
great job in keeping the Nobility informed of
what activities were taking place and making
sure that everyone stayed safe and did have
an enjoyable time when we were together.
Although this has been a rather unusual
year, should you be a member of Rajah
Shrine and are looking to belong to a hard
working Unit, please consider this your
invitation to join us on the third Tuesday of
the month at 7 p.m. in the All-Purpose room
on the Rajah Shrine Campus for a look-see
into what we are doing.

The 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Oct. 5 – 11 at TPC
Summerlin, will be played as scheduled without fans in attendance. The
decision comes after consulting with Shriners Hospitals for Children staff
and the PGA TOUR. Shriners Hospitals for Children Open remains dedicated
to taking the recommended precautions to enable the safety of players,
caddies and essential tournament staff and volunteers.
