CINCO MUD 8 NOVEMBER WATER SAVING TIPS
As temperatures drop in November, Cinco MUD 8 offers these Water
Conservation tips:
• Turn off your sprinkler system
• Winterize the sprinkler by turning off the valve on the side of the house,
bleed out the excess water and wrap the pipes.
• Inside, change your faucet aerators to 1.5gpm or less. These should be
changed annually.
• Put 2 drops of food coloring in the toilet tanks. Wait 15 minutes. If the
toilet water changes color, there is a leak.
• Use Dishwasher and Clothes washer for full loads only.
• Following these tips will lower water consumption and save money.

Lose a pet? Find a pet? See a pet running around a neighborhood? Please
share it with the Cinco Ranch Area Lost and Found Pet Network: www.
facebook.com/groups/CRLostPets. We are a group run by Cinco Ranch
residents for Cinco Ranch residents to help lost pets find their way home
through networking with like-minded rescue groups and other HOA
pages.
Cinco Ranch Lost and Found Pet Network is a resource with many
documents available located within our group files to help those who
have both lost and found pets, as well as lists of related, pet service
providers. For instance, did you know animal control in Fort Bend County
is all the way down in Rosenberg, but if you live in the Harris County
portion of Cinco and your dog is picked up, it is taken all the way up
by I-45 and Canino Road - near Little York Road? (The worst scenario is
if a dog that lives in one county ends up being picked up in the other
county.) Also, if your pet is brought to one of these locations, you likely
will only have three days to find it before it is released for adoption OR
euthanized.
If you wait to see if your animal returns home on its own, it might be
too late! Please use this new group as needed and share our page with
Facebook friends!
We are looking for volunteers to help administer this group and also
people that would be willing to foster animals found in Cinco until their
owners are found, rather than the animals being brought to a shelter. If

KATY ISD PROVIDING FREE MEALS
TO ALL KATY AREA STUDENTS
Through an extended waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) and Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), Katy ISD began
providing free meals to all Katy area students on Monday, September 21 st .
Students can receive breakfast and lunch at no cost through December
31 st or pending available funds through the USDA and TDA.
“All students are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch meal per day
per federal guidance,” said Nutrition & Food Service Executive Director
Donna Pittenger. “Parents can however add funds to their student’s Pay
N’ Go meal account for a la carte purchases or in preparation for when the
USDA waiver ends,” added Pittenger.
For students participating in Katy ISD virtual instruction, as well as
children 18 and under not enrolled in Katy ISD, breakfast and lunch can
be picked up at designated school curbside distribution sites from 4 to
6 PM, Monday through Friday. Meals are packaged to be heated and
eaten at home and are to be picked up a day before the intended use.
Distribution sites include:
· Cinco Ranch High School, 23440 Cinco Ranch Blvd, Katy, TX 77494
· Mayde Creek High School, 19202 Groeschke Road, Katy, TX 77084
· Morton Ranch High School, 21000 Franz Road, Katy, TX 77449
The TDA policy now requires parents picking up meals, without a student,
to present one of the following forms of documentation for each child:
an official letter, email, electronic school application, student report
card, student ID card, attendance records with student’s names or a birth
certificate.
Once the waiver expires, Katy ISD will switch back to the National School
Lunch and Breakfast Program. Free and reduced meal applications must
still be submitted for the 2020-2021 school year to determine benefits after
the waiver ends. Parents can visit schoolcafe.com/KatyISD to apply online.
DONATUTORS
Donatutors is a nonprofit tutoring organization that donates 100% of
our proceeds to charity. All of our tutors are straight-A students at Seven
Lakes High school and we offer a multitude of courses like creative
writing, computer science, biology, public speaking, ICTW writing and
many different math courses too. We charge $20 per class, but the first

Donatutors was able to raise $1,283 which we used 70% to give to a
Houston based charity called NAMI and 30% to buy a bunch of masks

families and veterans. These families have stepped up to
the plate at great personal cost and the toll that multiple
and extended deployments take can be very high. Stress
levels sky rocket and spouses and children can struggle
when service members are gone for prolonged periods
and some may even have a difficult time adjusting when
the service member returns. All of these families deserve
some recognition and our appreciation.

APPRECIATION MONTH
The month of November is Military Family Month. This provides us all the opportunity
to celebrate the sacrifices and contributions that service members’ families have made
and continue to make. As we celebrate the annual November Military Appreciation
Month take the time to honor our veterans, their families and the sacrifices they’ve
made.

2. Write a thank you note to a family for what they’ve
sacrificed.
3. Provide job opportunities.
4. Offer workplace flexibility.
5. Offer to babysit. Imagine 6-9 months with no spouse
at home to support you! Yup - let that sink in! Offer to
babysit. Often. It can be a sanity saver.
6. Perform a random act of kindness for the family, while
remaining anonymous.
7. Volunteer your time. Cut the grass. Rake leaves. Clear

10 Alternatives to a
Thanksgiving Turkey
There are plenty of alternative Thanksgiving meals that
will give you that holiday feeling. Here are some ideas:
• Pork Roast: Adding apples and cinnamon will ensure
that no one misses the turkey when you serve this dish. It
smells and tastes like holiday heaven.
• Roasted Chicken: A roasted chicken certainly qualifies as
a solid turkey replacement.
• Thanksgiving Jambalaya: You can substitute any meat
here: turkey breast slices, chicken, shrimp.
• Baked Cod or Microwaved Salmon: Who says you can’t
serve fish on Thanksgiving!
• Eggplant Parmesan: Both vegetarians and nonvegetarians
alike will love you for this.
• Leg of Lamb: A great alternative that will everyone,
especially if you add exotic spices and seasonings.
• Beef Stew: Hearty and plentiful; your house will be filled
with the most amazing aromas.

Mashed potatoes, homemade apple pie, stuffing, hot
dinner rolls with melted butter, creamed corn, green
bean casserole, salad with all the fixins’ and of course
the main dish - the BIRD. All of this equals at least
2,000+ calories. What is a holiday food enthusiast
to do? Yes, you CAN avoid the holiday weight gain!
Here’s how:
• Drink H2O before you eat: chances are, you are
thirsty before any and every meal; drink a full glass
of water to quench your thirst first, then notice you
will feel fuller.
• Rainbow plate: make sure your plate has color - fresh/
not creamed items, broiled or grilled vegetables,
protein, carbohydrate and again, water.
• On the side: those side dishes - mashed potatoes,
casseroles, stuffing, dressing, etc. are SIDES not main
dishes; make sure to keep these portions small.
• NO to salad dressing: hooray there is a salad! BUT
- that tasty dressing (ranch, thousand island, French,
Russian, balsamic vinaigrette, etc.) will reverse the
purpose of the ruffage; instead, make your own
dressing at home and bring it with you or simply ask
for olive oil, salt & pepper and maybe a hint of lemon.
• Walk it off: finished eating? Go for a WALK; football
can wait (yes, even the college games), because your
body deserves better.

Cherry Lollipops
You could make this on National Candy Day November 4th!
INGREDIENTS:
Nonstick cooking spray
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
1 box (3-ounce) cherry gelatin dessert mix
Special Equipment:
20 (4-inch) lollipop sticks
Metal tablespoon-size measuring spoon
Candy thermometer
DIRECTIONS:
Spray 2 large baking sheets with nonstick spray. Arrange 10 lollipop
sticks on each baking sheet, spacing evenly apart.
Stir sugar, corn syrup and butter in small saucepan over low heat until
sugar has dissolved. Slowly bring to boil, stirring frequently. Continue
cooking for 7 minutes or until candy thermometer registers 275 degrees.
Stir in gelatin until smooth. Using metal tablespoon and working quickly,
spoon syrup over one end of each lollipop stick. Cool completely.
Wrap each lollipop in plastic wrap and store in airtight container.

Amish White Bread
You could make this on Homemade Bread Day November 17th!
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2/3 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
6 cups bread flour
DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and then stir in yeast.
Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam. Mix salt and oil into
the yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured
surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl and turn dough to coat.
Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide in half. Shape
into loaves and place into two well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise
for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.

Gardening Tips
for November
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as
nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored
circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide
recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid
walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the
bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn
areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate
those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote
root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades
now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of
the grass blade away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut
flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in
making root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now.
Keep up spraying program and water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects
and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings.
Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If
soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum
and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back
in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper
and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect
roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine
tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias
and next Spring’s impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood
meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
