YARD OF THE MONTH
The Sheffield HOA wants to recognize one neighbor every month for
their dedication and devotion to the upkeep of their front yard. Each
month’s winner will be featured in the Sheffield newsletter and will get
bragging rights with a Yard of the Month sign displayed in their yard for
that month. Residents can win only once per calendar year and must be

GARBAGE SERVICE
The trash pick-up schedule in Sheffield is Tuesday and Friday. Heavy
trash days are every other Tuesday. Please remember to keep your
garbage cans at least three feet away from other garbage cans, cars,
poles or anything that may block the truck from gaining access to the
can on pick-up days. Also remember that items piled up by the garbage
can will not be picked up except on heavy trash days. Recycling is picked
up on Friday. REMINDER - the garbage contract is through your water
company – Langham Creek UD. If you need more specific information on
pick-days or any other item that is related to garbage pick-up please call
Langham Creek UD at 281-376-8802 or email them at customerservice@
wdmtexas.com or you can call the garbage company, WCA at 281-368-
8397. This is not an HOA contract or a service that is provided by the HOA.

Please see the HOA guidelines regarding fencing requirements to ensure
that fencing additions meet guidelines and that you submit your plans
and application for approval PRIOR to doing any modifications. The

GARAGE SALE SIGNS
Placing garage sale signs in the flower and shrub beds within the
neighborhood is not permitted. Such signs found in the flower and shrub
beds will be removed immediately and placed in the trash.
LITTER PICKUP
Just a reminder, if you see trash in the neighborhood, please be a good
neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, then trash
will either end up in someone’s shrubbery or trees or else get washed
down the storm sewers, contributing to mosquito breeding and backing
up of the storm drains in times of heavy rains. Thanks to those of you who
regularly pick up other people’s litter.
PETS
Please remember that you are not allowed by law to let your dogs and cats
run loose in the neighborhood. If caught, you may receive a ticket in the
amount of up to $500 for such a violation (we have had residents receive
such a ticket). If you see loose pets you can contact Harris County Animal
Control. A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs or let their
cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your pet leave their
poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds (they belong to
all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go to the bathroom,
please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store bags or the newspaper
delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile by placing your hand inside
the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie the bag up and throw it in the
garbage. Leaving your pet waste around encourages the possible spread
of pet disease, such as Parvo, which can be life threatening, or parasites.
A number of complaints have been made about stray cats roaming the
neighborhood. To report stray or unconfined animals call 281-999-3191,
Monday thru Friday during the hours of 9 AM until 6 PM.
VANDALISM
Remember, if you see suspicious activity in or around Sheffield, please
immediately call the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000.
TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS
If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the
teenage job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website (www.
krenekprinting.com, click submissions and choose Jobseekers) with
your name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will graduate
and the name of your newsletter/subdivision. Check the list of jobs you
want on your form. Please make sure your email is correct, we send
emails in the summer to make sure all the info is still good and that you

HOUSTON OPEN BIRDIES FOR CHARITY®
What is Birdies for Charity®? Birdies for Charity® is a fundraising program
designed to give local charities the opportunity to generate contributions
through the Houston Open. 100% of your donation goes directly to the
charity of your choice. The Houston Open will also award the top three
donation-collecting charities and one randomly drawn charity with an
additional bonus. In 2019, the Houston Open distributed $615,000 to
local nonprofits.
How can I participate in Birdies for Charity®? There are two ways to donate
to the Birdies for Charity program:
1. Make a pledge of one cent or more for every “Birdie” made by the PGA
Tour Pros during the Houston Open. If 1,500 birdies are made during the
2020 event, here are the totals for some typical pledge amounts:
• 1 cent pledge = $15 total pledge
• 3 cent pledge = $45 total pledge
• 10 cent pledge = $150 total pledge
• $1 pledge = $1,500 total pledge
The minimum birdie pledge is $.01 and the maximum pledge is $1. The
last day to submit a pledge is Sunday, November 8, 2020. Last year, 1,244
birdies were made at the Houston Open. FYI we are playing at a new
course this year.
2. Make a flat donation not tied to birdies. For flat donations, the minimum is
$20. To donate, please visit our Charity page at www.houstonopengolf.com.
Grand Prize: You are eligible to enter our “Guess the Birdie” contest when
you donate or make a pledge to one of our local charities. Guess the total
number of birdies that will be made by PGA Tour Pros during the Houston

guesses the correct number. In case of ties, winners will be randomly

33ND ANNUAL B. F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC
POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation
(CFEF) trustees graded 1200+ scholarship applications and met via Zoom
to award more than $635,000 in scholarships. For Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
graduating seniors planning to attend Lone Star College full-time in the
fall, our application is open now through May 11, 2020. This summer, the
Foundation will award $72,000 from the Edwin C. Schroeder Endowment
Fund. The Foundation looks forward to recognizing our 2020 scholarship
recipients this August.

With the Stay Home - Work Safe Mandate through the end of April, the
Foundation has decided to postpone the B. F. Adam Golf Classic until
the COVID-19 risk is minimal within our community for the safety of our
288 golfers and over 100 volunteers, trustees and staff, who help make
this event a tremendous success, as well as the staff at BlackHorse Golf
Club. Our 33 rd annual B. F. Adam Golf Class has been moved to Monday,
November 16, 2020.
Celebrating 50 years as a non-profit raising money to fund scholarships
for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school graduates, the Cy-Fair Educational
Foundation is looking forward to our exciting Fall lineup of events.

KIDS’ MEALS 12TH ANNUAL HARVEST
LUNCHEON GOES VIRTUAL ON
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2020, 11:45 AM
A vivacious Kid’ Meals’ “spokeskid” will emcee the luncheon and welcome
guests to an inspiring, engaging and entertaining afternoon. Guests will join
a virtual ride-along in a Kids’ Meals van to deliver meals directly to the homes
of hungry children and will also enjoy a special “Who is Kids’ Meals” and
“Cycle of Poverty” animated presentation. Attendees will also experience a
virtual tour of Kids’ Meals’ newly expanded 18,000 sq. ft. space and virtually
meet kids from the Kids’ Meals program along with a few of the thousands
of volunteers including staff drivers who kept the program running during
COVID. While learning the impact of hunger in Houston, guests will be
able to participate in an online raffle and silent auction curated by Silent
Auction Chairs Vanessa and Jeremy Goebel. During the luncheon, Kids’
Meals will recognize volunteers who stepped up and devoted their time
to help the Kids’ Meals program grow 135 percent overnight to feed more
than 7,500 children a day at the peak of the pandemic earlier this year. Kids’
Meals invites everyone to support the mission to end childhood hunger
by purchasing individual tickets, underwrite tables and host their own
viewing party with a gourmet meal delivered to their door by Click Virtual

EVERGREENS - CUB SCOUT PACK 70 FUNDRAISER
Pack 70 is part of Boy Scouts of America in the Sam Houston Area Council
and is sponsored by The Church Without Walls. The Pack is active units
with monthly activities that include camping trips, pinewood derby,
fishing, hiking, district pushmobile races and several community service
projects. We teach the core values of scouting and our goal is to provide
an opportunity for scouts and their parents to participate in fun activities
with other scouting families. Boys between the ages of 5 and 11, in grades
Kindergarten thru 5th can join Cub Scouts throughout the school year
Each year Cub Scout Pack 70 needs to raise funds to support the activities
of our youth membership. This year we are selling Christmas Wreaths and
other Holiday Evergreens and hope we can rely on your help.

Centerpiece and/or Garland. Deadline to order will be November 9 th .
There are two opportunities to make a purchase. Local Delivery (open to

Here’s how it works: When you receive notification that your holds are ready
for pick-up, call your HCPL pick-up location. Please have your library card
number and PIN handy. You will be given a pick-up time and instructions for
curbside pick-up (These may vary slightly from branch to branch). When you
arrive at the library, follow the instructions you were provided over the phone.
You may be asked to show your library card or other form of ID for verification.
Note: Library staff will not be able to take your returns during curbside
pick-up, please put them in the book drop. For your safety and that of HCPL
staff, curbside pick-up may be temporarily suspended during bad weather.

of us share in the responsibility of caring for our military
families and veterans. These families have stepped up to
the plate at great personal cost and the toll that multiple
and extended deployments take can be very high. Stress
levels sky rocket and spouses and children can struggle
when service members are gone for prolonged periods
and some may even have a difficult time adjusting when
the service member returns. All of these families deserve
some recognition and our appreciation.
10 WAYS TO RECOGNIZE MILITARY FAMILY
APPRECIATION MONTH
The month of November is Military Family Month. This provides us all the opportunity
to celebrate the sacrifices and contributions that service members’ families have made
and continue to make. As we celebrate the annual November Military Appreciation
Month take the time to honor our veterans, their families and the sacrifices they’ve
made.
“Military families exemplify the courage and resolve that define our national character.
For their country and their loved ones, they rise to the challenges of multiple
deployments and frequent moves - spouses who care and provide for children in their
partners’ absence, kids who make new friends and leave known comforts behind. They
are the force behind the force, patriots who support their family members in uniform
while enriching the communities they call home.” The sacrifices and duty involved in
service to the nation often goes unnoticed by those in the civilian world. Countless
moves. Nonstop deployments. Extended deployments…Over two million children

serve with courage and honor, rate extra kudos. As we
celebrate the annual November Military Appreciation

10 Alternatives to a
Thanksgiving Turkey
There are plenty of alternative Thanksgiving meals that
will give you that holiday feeling. Here are some ideas:
• Pork Roast: Adding apples and cinnamon will ensure
that no one misses the turkey when you serve this dish. It
smells and tastes like holiday heaven.
• Roasted Chicken: A roasted chicken certainly qualifies as
a solid turkey replacement.
• Thanksgiving Jambalaya: You can substitute any meat
here: turkey breast slices, chicken, shrimp.
• Baked Cod or Microwaved Salmon: Who says you can’t
serve fish on Thanksgiving!

BEAT THE
HOLIDAY WEIGHT
Mashed potatoes, homemade apple pie, stuffing, hot
dinner rolls with melted butter, creamed corn, green
bean casserole, salad with all the fixins’ and of course
the main dish - the BIRD. All of this equals at least
2,000+ calories. What is a holiday food enthusiast
to do? Yes, you CAN avoid the holiday weight gain!
Here’s how:
• Drink H2O before you eat: chances are, you are
thirsty before any and every meal; drink a full glass
of water to quench your thirst first, then notice you
will feel fuller.
• Rainbow plate: make sure your plate has color - fresh/
not creamed items, broiled or grilled vegetables,
protein, carbohydrate and again, water.
• On the side: those side dishes - mashed potatoes,
casseroles, stuffing, dressing, etc. are SIDES not main
dishes; make sure to keep these portions small.
• NO to salad dressing: hooray there is a salad! BUT
- that tasty dressing (ranch, thousand island, French,
Russian, balsamic vinaigrette, etc.) will reverse the
purpose of the ruffage; instead, make your own
dressing at home and bring it with you or simply ask
for olive oil, salt & pepper and maybe a hint of lemon.
• Walk it off: finished eating? Go for a WALK; football
can wait (yes, even the college games), because your
body deserves better.

Cherry Lollipops
You could make this on National Candy Day November 4th!
INGREDIENTS:
Nonstick cooking spray
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
1 box (3-ounce) cherry gelatin dessert mix
Special Equipment:
20 (4-inch) lollipop sticks
Metal tablespoon-size measuring spoon
Candy thermometer
DIRECTIONS:
Spray 2 large baking sheets with nonstick spray. Arrange 10 lollipop
sticks on each baking sheet, spacing evenly apart.
Stir sugar, corn syrup and butter in small saucepan over low heat until
sugar has dissolved. Slowly bring to boil, stirring frequently. Continue
cooking for 7 minutes or until candy thermometer registers 275 degrees.
Stir in gelatin until smooth. Using metal tablespoon and working quickly,
spoon syrup over one end of each lollipop stick. Cool completely.
Wrap each lollipop in plastic wrap and store in airtight container.

Amish White Bread
You could make this on Homemade Bread Day November 17th!
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2/3 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
6 cups bread flour
DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and then stir in yeast.
Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam. Mix salt and oil into
the yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured
surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl and turn dough to coat.
Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes and divide in half. Shape
into loaves and place into two well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise
for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.

Gardening Tips
for November
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as
nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored
circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide
recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid
walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the
bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn
areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate
those low spots.
• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote
root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades
now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of
the grass blade away.
• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut
flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in
making root growth.
• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now.
Keep up spraying program and water deeply.
• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects
and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings.
Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If
soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum
and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.
• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back
in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper
and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect
roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine
tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias
and next Spring’s impatiens.
• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood
meat mixed in soil under each plant.
• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
