SEIWOOO 

Alban Mannisi is a landscape architect and director of SEIWOOO, the Urban & Landscape Architecture 

Platform currently based in Tokyo. He has worked in France, Korea, and Singapore, participating in 

many projects all over the world. As a lecturer and writer, he is an active mediator between European 

and Asian cultures of landscape architecture. He is also a director and chief editor of the French-English-Korean 

publisher ZZaC.Book and invites people in any fields to exchange ideas. 

He studied Design at ‘Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nantes’ (1994-1999), then Landscape Architecture at 

‘Ecole d’Architecture et du Paysage de Bordeaux’ (1999-2004). 

While still staying at school, he designed from concept to completion three private gardens in France. 

On his final year of Master study, he participated in the design and implementation of the tramway project 

for a specific municipality of Bordeaux. Upon successful completion of this project, he was employed 

by the agency ‘Signes’ based in Paris and was involved with the development of numerous projects in 

France of varying degrees in scale and magnitude. 

On April 2005, he moved to Seoul, South Korea where he had the opportunity to apply his knowledge 

and experience, as a free-lancing landscape architect, in a country of great dynamism. 

He is also director of ZZaC.Book (Book edition) & the international group of ZzaC.

Does the landscape need us as we need it ? 

Philosophy 

This posturing brings us to always question the need for landscape. 

… France/countryside, though equipped from so dense cities to forests without traces of 

human being, in furious Korea, lapse of memory of the ground of these Asiatic cities…. 

The project of landscaping is not obvious. 

The need for landscape is only equalled by the variety of kilometers crossed from islands to them. 

From my experience within a radiant artistic environment, escaping from everything to better provide itself with the 

essentials, to urban and territorial landscape developments where each element, from clouds to algae is actively 

involved in invested sites, the iniquity of our knowledge regarding landscape analysis clearly appeared to me. 

Try. It’s the best we can do. Essential, 

because, as active participants, we belong to a process in which we are not always orchestrators but by definition 

actors. 

We cannot avoid being a part of it. At the very best we have to be responsible. 

`The problem with men is that they always have good reasons’ (Jean Renoir - La regle du Jeu) : 

a landscape architect is as dangerous as he is fascinating. Everything is possible for him. 

He is not the artist who takes the risk to hurt the republic in a showroom full of ‘Yes’ men. 

He imposes himself on everybody and has to assume this majestic and vulgar presumption. 

The risks are important. 

… then let us take time to go outside and remain there… scraping the pavement, working the countryside, 

everything that connects us to the essentials that we can’t yet detect…
