HEAD OFFICE CELEBRATES VALENTINE’S DAY AND
CONGRATULATES EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER
(Q2) FINALISTS
Head Office
Head Office combined Valentine’s Day with Employee of the Quarter (Q2) into one celebration.
Finalists for Q2 included Busisiwe Mhlongo, Rendani Muninyi and Andries Phora who were recognised for their outstanding
performance, dedication and commitment during this quarter.
Amongst the nomination forms a somewhat ‘humorous’ nomination was discovered, it read…
“Dear Santa, I see we don’t have a big tree at all, Just this blue box on the wall. I have been really good this quarter, I have been nice, twice.
That’s A LOT!!!I have gone the extra mile, Walking through the building, sucking in the dust. You have to give me kudos for that. Oh yes, that’s a must!!
I have an attitude of pleasantness, And professional indeed. As you know, I’m the Elf YOU need. Problems and solutions are part of the job,
No need to stress and go home sob, sob. We have three choices to any problem dear; Make it worse, Make it better, Or leave it the same.
But Santa, solving problems is the name of MY game. SO, Come on, come on, Stop wasting time. You don’t need to read all the paper,
COS I’M THE ONE THIS TIME!! I’m giggling and shouting all over the place, Cos I know you are going to pick me I HAVE WON THIS RACE!!!“

TECHNICAL WEEK-END
Nelspruit | by Keith Labeeuw
After much discussion, the techie team decided to head off to Vygeboom Dam for a techie week-end.
We started off with a ‘bundu bash’ through the bush and finally found the perfect spot right at the water’s edge (thanks Peet).
With the temperature at 40+ degrees and pumping wind, the only shelter from the heat was the water itself. Like hippos we all waded
into the cool water with a drink in hand, while Tyrone captured this all on his GoPro!!
Graduate and Kenny, with the helping hand of ‘Maplazane’ Pieter, got the fire going so that we could start braaing. With more flames
than coals, the guys each had a turn at burning our first braai-pack for the day. So we waited for a while and cheered on our
colleagues who were braving the extreme sun and the even hotter flames.
Once it started cooling down, Gerhard and I tried our fishing skills but only caught old carp lines left in the water. With both of us wet
and cold, the guys got an awesome raging fire going to keep us all warm until dinner. Robin played barman and kept the drinks
flowing.
Donovan and Graduate with their supervising friend Sibusiso (chatting up the girls on his phone… aaaahhh) put the heavy army tent
up in the dark - we all had a fantastic night at the dam.
Thank you to each and every one of my amazing colleagues for making this week-end a memorable one - You guys rock!!

END OF YEAR FUNCTION
Cape Town
by Carol Harris
Earl Lewis & Allenora Ziervogel Robyn O’Neale Dewald Van Wyk & Carl Anthony
How Scary can you be?
This was the theme for our year-end function…
Once again it was hosted at our favourite venue, D’Aria, on Friday the 13th of December.
Staff dressed up in spectacular costumes each reflecting their most ‘scary’ character and entered the venue through a
dark tunnel while a hidden ‘fogger machine’ created the perfect effect.
Ten-year Long Service Awards were handed out to Riana Klopper and also Michelle Wessels. Karen Hayes received her
20-year Long Service Award while Louis Koen received his 25-year Long Service Award. This was followed by the handing
out of Long Service Awards to Jacqui Walker, Wilstan Weichardt and Luigi Bissolati who have all been with the company
for 30 years. The final Long Service Award was presented to Piet Coetsee for 35 years of service!
Once all the formalities were over, the party continued with some real ‘horror’ music – indeed it was a ‘ghostly affair’!

SCHOOL SHOE INITIATIVE
Johannesburg
Vulindlela Primary School in Orange Farm had 99
children who were in desperate need of school
shoes. These children were going to school in
broken shoes which were beyond repair and in
some cases children had no shoes at all, arriving
at school barefoot.
When the branch heard of this plight they
immediately set up a ‘school shoe initiative’.
The response was overwhelming and the monies
donated allowed for all 99 children to receive one
pair of school shoes and socks.
A personalised gift bag which included their
name, grade and shoe size was handed to each
child.
Staff from the branch visited the
school in February and handed
over these much needed items.
The joy and excitement on the faces
of the children when they saw their
new pair of school shoes was
heart-warming to say the least.

Carl Anthony has been working on the Cape Nature account
for the past few years and at the end of February he
successfully concluded the roll-out of the newly awarded
Tender.
Most of the 39 devices were installed in the Western Cape.
This installation also included some some scanning facilities,
allowing the client to integrate into a document management
system at a later stage.
The branch is confident that the client will be looking at
further solutions in the near future.
Well done Carl, Karen, Michelle and the rest of the team for
making this a smooth and problem-free installation.

FAREWELL
RITA MEYER & BAXOLISE DASI
Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a
team or call it family – this is the PE branch and sadly
we recently had to bid farewell to two ‘family’ members
of the team.
Our very own ‘mother hen’, Rita Meyer who made
Konica Minolta SA her second home for 17 years and
the always genuine and friendly Baxolise ‘Bakkies’ Dasi,
our trainee technician.
We arranged a surprise farewell for both of them to
show our appreciation for their valued contribution over
the years and for the positive impact they have had on
all the staff they have worked with. Saying good-bye to
two such dynamic, hard-working, creative and pleasant
individuals wasn’t easy. Although we will miss their
presence in the office we wish them the very best for
the future.

DIVERSO’S LOCKDOWN EXPERIENCES
Diverso Technology
During Level-5 Lockdown, Diverso employees were glad to
have their kids doing more household chores than ever
before. The value of long family dinners with actual
discussions, was realised again. Cigarettes were found in
medicine cabinets. Technology became our friend, with our
kids teaching us how to use Zoom/Teams/WA video calling
etc. YouTube exercise videos became the norm in some
households. Kids (and husbands) learned to cook. A
general patience had to be adopted to endure shopping
queues and sanitiser shortages. Pregnant colleagues could
not take their husbands with them to scans. Diverso sold
thermometers!
An unknown source mentioned: “This too shall pass, it might
pass like a kidney stone, but it WILL pass.”

A MUCH NEEDED FACELIFT
Pretoria
Although the branch’s reception area worked it was
in dire need of a facelift and only after the refurb did
the branch realise just how much this change was
needed.
Having to work from a small makeshift desk while
answering the switchboard as well as welcoming
guests to the building made it quite challenging for
reception while the refurb took place.
before...
All the inconvenience was so worth it especially
when the changes started to take shape and the
reception began to take on a new-look.
The outcome speaks for itself and the branch are
extremely proud of their new reception.

DEALER CONFERENCE 2020
Head Office by Philip Azzie
The 2020 Dealer Conference was the first-ever ‘virtual’ conference hosted by head office. The conference was a
resounding success and for this we thank the ‘team’ of Ritchi, Mandy and Ivone who were absolutely fantastic in making it
all come together.
The conference was facilitated by well-known business talk-show host, Bruce Whitfield. Bruce’s presentation, ‘The Upside
of Down’ based on a book he has written was both interesting and insightful, giving his perspective of the impact Covid-19
has had on business. At the end of his presentation, Bruce quizzed the audience with questions relating to his talk, all winners
will be receiving a signed copy of his book.
Four of our dealers received Long Service Awards – altogether, the number of years they have been part of the Konica

to Whales’, ‘Momentum Medical Scheme Tankwa Trek’ (presented by Biogen) and ‘Imbuko Big Five Mountain Challenge’,
to name but a few, in preparation for the ‘race that measures all’ and which was due to start with registration on Saturday
14 March. And then, on Friday 13 March at 19h27 a post on the Cape Epic Facebook page announced that the 2020 Absa
Cape Epic had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Soon many other events were also cancelled including
‘IronMan’ and ‘Two Oceans’. Within one week, life as we knew it had changed completely.
Diverso wants to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in many ways to the dream – the support, the
sponsorships, the Facebook posts, Strava, Garmin, Zwift likes and comments as well as Hennie du Toit’s cycling partner,
Jaco Kotze, who trained with him and also Hennie’s family who supported him through a difficult time. A special mention
of thanks goes to the following sponsors: Diverso Technology; Konica Minolta South Africa; Ikon Office Technology; Absa
South Africa & Cycle2Ride.
These are very disappointing and uncertain times, so let us take up the challenge as one and make the most of the hand we
are dealt by standing together.

HEAD OFFICE
YEAR-END FUNCTION
Head Office
Beautiful décor, elegant chairs, smart table linen and creative
centre pieces transformed the head office showroom into a
stunning party venue.
Long Service Awards were handed out to the following staff:
Shadrack Mavasa (10-years); Patrick Mathye (10-years);
Mandy De Bruyn (20-years); Edmund Jacobs (20-years)
and Denise Leong (35-years).
The ‘photobooth’, although tucked away in a corner of the
showroom created great entertainment for the afternoon with the
resident showroom ‘bizhub’ working overtime, while printing out
the ‘dress-up’ photos.
A delicious ‘Mediterranean-style braai’ was set up outside and
lucky for all the weather was superb.
The function continued well into the afternoon and the success of
this event again highlighted the versatility of the head office
showroom.

MANDELA DAY 2020
Port Elizabeth
On Mandela Day, the PE branch visited an Aids haven, The House of Resurrection, where orphans from the age of three up
to 18 are cared and provided for.
Tata Madiba once said ‘Our children are our future and one of the basic responsibilities is to care for them in the best and
most compassionate manner possible.’ This was the perfect opportunity for the branch to come together as one team with
one goal to show compassion and kindness to these children who are so in need.
PE staff donated groceries, detergents, toiletries, toys, books, clothing and shoes to the facility.

PR PRISM-WINNING PARTNERSHIP:
OGILVY, KONICA MINOLTA SA & FTFA
Ogilvy Johannesburg, Konica Minolta South Africa and
Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) have been awarded the
Prism Bronze Award for Excellence and Leadership in
Corporate Social Responsibility. Celebrating excellence in
public relations, the award was presented during the 23rd
Prism Award ceremony, held online on 15 May 2020.
It recognises the partnership’s longstanding tree planting
initiative, which has seen more than 50,000 trees planted
across South Africa over the past 12 years.
In 2008, Konica Minolta SA established a partnership with
FTFA to plant trees in order to offset the company’s carbon
footprint, and thereby combat climate change. The project
further aims to educate youth as to the importance of
planting trees, as well as inspire other companies to
implement sustainable initiatives and adhere to carbon tax
laws. The initiative has also sought to commemorate the life
of Nelson Mandela, by planting trees in areas connected
with his legacy. Ogilvy assisted in establishing a
partnership with the Robben Island Museum (RIM), and in
September last year, 101 trees were planted on Robben
Island, celebrating the 101st anniversary of Madiba’s birth
and supporting RIM’s long-term plan to rehabilitate
sustainable vegetation on the island.
More recently, Konica Minolta SA celebrated planting their 50,000th tree by donating 1,500 trees for planting across
Soweto, expected to offset an estimated 555.5 tons of CO e in their lifetime.
In addition to meeting – and frequently exceeding – the PR objectives set for the project, the initiative has had a
far-reaching impact on the communities and environments with which it has interacted. Over the past 12 years,
Konica Minolta SA has donated trees to 1,037 beneficiary organisations, including 985 schools, 52 community centres and
11,639 homes. The trees help to prevent both erosion and water overflow, and fruit trees play a role in supporting food
security. Around 3, 500 learners have been educated as to the importance of planting trees and 129 community educators
have been trained.
The PRISMs are Africa’s most sought after public relations and communication awards. They are awarded to individuals,
students, consultancies, companies, government organisations and NGOs that have “successfully fused strategy with
creativity and professionalism to achieve the best communications and business objectives in their public relations
campaigns”. More than 67 leading industry professionals judge the awards – along with ten up and coming young judges,
as part of the PRISMs Young Voices initiative.
The Bronze Award presented to Ogilvy, Konica Minolta SA and FTFA was the only award presented in the category of
Corporate Social Responsibility.

KONICA MINOLTA SOUTH AFRICA‘S
TREE PLANTING HITS
50,000 TREES!
Head Office by Ritchi Smith
In February this year, we celebrated planting our 50,000th tree with an incredibly
successful event at the DOCC YMCA in Orlando, Soweto.
Our 12 year tree-planting partnership with Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) has
seen us planting trees at schools across the country, as well as at clinics,
community centres, RDP homes, along the Mandela Route in the Eastern Cape,
on Robben Island and at other historical landmarks.
At the event in February children from the AB Xuma Primary School joined us at
the DOCC YMCA (formerly the Donaldson Orlando Community Centre), where
they learned how to plant a tree and the benefits of doing so. Trees were also
planted at 50 other schools throughout Soweto.
The letter written by Madiba to his daugter
Zindzi in 1979
Portia Tshepe who manages the DOCC YMCA took us on a very interesting tour
around the centre and told us that Madiba as a young man had lived in
Orlando and had spent many hours at the YMCA sparring in the gym. Amongst
the memorabilia on the walls of the gym was a letter written by Madiba to his
daughter Zindzi, as well as a photo of Madiba sparring in the gym.
Later we met Frans Mphele, the current owner of Madiba’s original home in
Orlando. Frans kindly allowed us to plant a tree adjacent to his garden in memory
of ‘Tata Madiba’.
Since 2008, our plantings have offset around 18,450 tonnes of CO e and this has
enabled Konica Minolta SA to maintain carbon-neutral status which we first
achieved in 2013. The tree donations have reached 11,639 homes and 1,037
beneficiary organisations – including 985 schools and 52 community centres.
We have also trained 129 community educators in sustainability, empowering
them to take the initiative forward.

Planting trees improves air quality by releasing oxygen and helps mitigate global warming by sequestering carbon
dioxide. Trees also reduce storm-water runoff, erosion and flooding and also provide habitat and food for a variety of birds,
animals and insects.
The plantings are part of our social-responsibility programme, which includes a mobile pop-up library and IT centres, the
Toner Cartridge Recycling project and our skills development and job creation programme for empowering disadvantaged
school-leavers, several of whom have been employed within our company.
During the Feburary planting, our CEO, Marc Pillay said, “Planting our 50,000th tree is a massive milestone, but we’re not
stopping here – we want to keep South Africa growing greener!”

THE DIVERSO MYSTERY
Diverso Technology
The Covid-19 pandemic, together with the South

mysterious during some stages. Thankful for a lift in

employees for their ongoing hard work and as
motivation for the remaining part of the year.

DANCING THROUGH
THE DECADES
Johannesburg | by Lerato Rampai & Joey Setlhatlole
‘Dancing through the Decades’ was the theme for the
Jo’burg branch end of year function.
Our end of year functions are known for being hosted in
December before the Christmas break and are intended at
reflecting and celebrating all the years we have worked
together and the challenges we have experienced as a
team.
To quote our manager, ‘we are at work 90 percent of the
time so we have to make sure we make the most of it as
colleagues become our family ’. Therefore, we always try
to ensure that every branch event is something that is
enjoyed by all staff.
Our end of year functions always have an exciting theme
and 2019 was no different. When we received the
invitation, ‘Dancing through the Decades’, we were so
excited as this meant we could be as creative as we
wanted to be, selecting dress-ups and hair styles all the
way through the decades right up to the 2000’s.

and the fun we’d had. It reminded us just how much things
have changed, from dungarees to ripped jeans…
Everyone arrived looking spectacular. As we entered the
venue, we were handed a ‘welcome drink’ making us all
feel very special indeed.
Our branch manager, Paul Symonds opened the event with
a welcome speech which was followed by the handing out
of Long Service Awards. The following staff members
were acknowledged for their commitment and dedication;
Riaz Mohamed (10-yrs); Enver Tootla (20-yrs);

TREE PLANTING
IN WITBANK
Witbank | by Empie Deysel
What a wonderful experience it was to be part of the 12-year Konica Minolta SA tree planting initiative. A tree is a life-giving
force for humans, animals and plants.
It all began with an email from Ritchi, long before the Covid lockdown. After much discussion a date was set for the tree
planting event and guess what date that was...March 26!! ‘Magtig man’ a day those involved in the event will never forget.
With the onset of Covid-19, the event had to be postponed and only in June were we able to confirm with Mohlamme High
School that we would be there on 01 July to plant trees as promised. Numerous emails flew between head office, my
dealership and the NPO Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), this because of the various Covid-19 restrictions which included a
permit being required by the NPO for travel to Mpumalanga.
Needless to say the event ran smoothly in spite of all the additional Covid-19 precautions that had to be ahered to. The
tree planting demonstration was managed by Jeminah Mkhize and Teboho Mosehle from FTFA, two incredible people who
are completely committed to the environment.
There were approximately 15 students at the event as well as the school principal Philimon Madisa, SGB members, myself
and two Konica Minolta Witbank sales representatives. We all found the planting demonstration incredibly interesting and
in no time the school principal and I planted a tree together in celebration of the 23-year partnership between the school
and Konica Minolta Witbank - a ‘shovel touch’ sealed this moment.
