Maximum Workflow | BY SEAN MCCORMACKNIK COLLECTION 3Occasionally in life, there are opportune moments. Our lookat editing with the Nik Collection in recent issues is continuing,but something happened to make it all the moreinteresting: DxO announced an update to the collection.Yes, we now have Nik Collection 3!
Lightroom MagazinePart of the reason for an update is in response to user feedback.Obviously, DxO took a product that Google abandoned(which was free as a result) and has had to build it upfor new operating systems and a new generation of users.Keeping those users happy, while gaining more, is a key elementin DxO’s strategy. You’re seeing the direct result ofthis in the new Nik Collection 3. While there are Photoshopspecificchanges, there are also some really exciting changesfor Lightroom Classic users, as well. I’d call that opportune.shave off some time, but otherwise, you’d have workahead of you.The Big FeaturesYou’ll immediately notice the addition of a new plug-in:Perspective Efex. Your first thought with this is probablythat you already have this tool in Lightroom, but bear withme. It does do some of the same things as Lightroom, buthas special additions, which make it very worthwhile.The next feature that’s a big win for Lightroom Classicusers is a new file format option. Within the plug-in, younow have a chance to save to a multipage TIFF file. What’sthat, you say? One of the main issues with going out to aplug-in is that you’re creating a rendered file. If you wantedto make changes to your edits, your only option was tostart again. If you saved a preset, you might be lucky andNot any longer; multipage TIFF allows you to save yourstarting file, the edited file, and metadata instructions onhow to get from one to the other, all inside one file. It’seffectively how Lightroom works, but in TIFF form. WithLightroom, you have the original file, and any applied settingsare saved in the catalog (or can be added as an XMPsidecar file). When you export, Lightroom reads the originalfile, adds the settings, and creates a new file. In multipageTIFF, all three stages are included in the one file. You’ll seethis in practice shortly.With Photoshop included in Adobe’s Photography Bundlewith Lightroom, it’s worth mentioning the Photoshopspecificchanges. The old panel is now gone and has beenreplaced with a far prettier and more functional panel. Ifthe panel doesn’t appear on launch, you’ll find it underKELBYONE.COM43
