M
y name is Matthieu Schwartz, I’m a
Swiss-Canadian architect student at
ETHZürich. Growing up between three different
cities and three languages, I’ve learned
to adapt quickly to my environment and
I enjoy interacting with it. I am a creative
and an intuitive person. My technical curriculum
has taught me to structure original
thoughts in a rational way. In the world of
architecture, I believe an important quality
lies between art and technique: Character.

Water tank apartment building
Water Documentation Project Pula Croatia
Documentation
As part of the semester, the studio took
a three day trip to Pula in Croatia. Each
student was assigned to document an
element of the region. As I researched
the theme of Water, the tasks presented
a challenge as the scale of the subject
required plans and the locals would not
easily reveal information about their
water systems. This increased my satisfaction
to discover and document unexpected
infrastructures.
Amongst the many interesting leveled
systems, waves breakers and important
harbor of the city, two buildings especially
caught my attention.

Thanks to a local architect Emil Jurcan,
I had a glance inside a hydroelectric station
hidden in plain sight in the middle
of the city parking lot where the market
takes place. Then thanks to a janitor, I
had the chance to learn about the existence
of a water tank at the top of an
apartment building. These two buildings
were chosen to symbolize the area
and two ArchiCAD line drawings are
the result of my documentation.

Uljanik Industrial Theatre Project Pula Croatia
Archeology of Tourism
As I started looking for a site in Pula,
I was particularly interested in Uljanik,
a huge Industrial Infrastructure slowly
running bankrupt. How could one reuse
Uljanik, without destroying or interrupting
its current functions. I was
looking for a second use of the area, a
use only after working hours to allow
the workers to build ships during the
day. As I visited the site, I discovered old
rails connecting the area and the idea
was born, to use these rails to reinterpret
Uljanik.

I wanted the train to be more than just
connecting A to B, but instead as a place
for culture, Uljanik was rethought as a
huge theater. The stage of this theater
would be the whole area and the tribune
would be one waggon following the old
rails. Visitors of the theatre will enter the
waggon at the old train station of Pula.
The station serves as a foyer, as a beginning
and endpoint of the experience.
From the station the waggon drives into
Uljanik, driving slowly, changing the
view of the audience at all times and
stopping at several points that serve as
a stage. It will make a tour through the
whole site before it will return to the
train station.

To create a connection to Uljanik and to
reuse old materials, the waggon is built out
of old and local shipwrecks. Non assigned
seats allow the audience to change their positions
during the play.
Further I designed a set of objects for the
theatre infrastructure. These objects are
placed in the area around the stages. They
are inspired by Uljanik itself. The objects fit
into the surrounding but are still different
from those already present. The work of
John Hejduk was a guideline in the process
of the design. His concept was adapted in
giving every object a character.

Masters Of Play
This project is about designing a
building that embodies a taboo:
The Freihaus. Maybe unexpected, I
undertook the theme of childhood.
As much as children are considered
as celestial angels I was intrigued
to notice how kids are also undermined
and ignored. The Freihaus became
a school inspired by the Greek
“Skhole”: which consists in free time,
a place for leisure, entertainment
and rest. The education follows the
theory of J. Huizinga, a new era of
Homo Ludens, Man the Player. Each
chamber suggests a form of play that
should help you acquire knowledge.
It is played or performed within a
playground, and played moreover as
a feast, in mirth and freedom. A sacred
space, a temporarily real world
of its own. With the end of play its
effect is not lost, rather it continues
to shed its radiance on the ordinary
world outside.
When you embark on your trip, all
sorts of curious incidents will take
place. This is a place to learn about
yourself, your interests, your emotions
and about what is real for you.
Above all it is a place to learn how
to learn, not to be taught, but to face
different stages of education. You
are free to do it any way you wish. It
is for everyone of all backgrounds.
The chief aim of freedom is to provide
both the opportunity and the
inducement to insure the maximum
use of knowledge that an individual
can acquire.The digital process implied
3D modelling, texturing, staging,
rendering, filming and sound
mixing. The result is a video in two
parts, first is the visit to the school
and the second part reveals behind
the scenes and more about the concept.
The poem and the text in the
videos were written for the project. I
hope you enjoy.
