□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□THURSDAY RECITALS AT RACHEL FOWLERLunchtime Recitals at the Rachel Fowler CentreThe spring season of Lunchtime Recitals at the Rachel FowlerCentre starts on Thursday 20th February with Curlew’s Cry.They are a local folk group comprising a pianist, a violinist and aguitarist/vocalist, and will be very entertaining.On 5th March Stonar School music department perform for usagain.On 19th March pupils of The Manor School Choir sing for us.The recitals all begin at 12.30pm and last about 45 minutes. Thereis no charge, but donations towards the expenses of the RachelFowler Centre are always welcomed. On sunny days watch the courtship displays ofemperor dragonfly, red-eyed and common bluedamselfly and the rare white-legged damselfly.In spring and summer the meadow is a pinkand white patchwork of ragged robin andoxeye daisy, red campion and meadowsweet.Keep an eye out for butterflies such as theorange tip and brimstone - one of the earliestto come out in spring.Over the pond, fringed with golden marshmarigolds and yellow iris, you might see theblue flash of a kingfisher. Migrating wadingbirds, such as the common sandpiper, stop offhere and regular visitors include moorhens,mallards and mute swans. You may spot agrass snake sunning itself, or water vole by theriver. A hidden world of runs and tunnels inthe grass are used by small rodents such asvoles to get about unseen. The rare watershrew is found here too. Pipistrelle anddaubenton’s bats can be seen on summernights – mainly along the river, which is also afeeding ground for otters.Conigre Mead Melksham was a field ofrough grass until bought by local people who setabout digging ponds, clearing scrub and plantingtrees and wildflowers. It was given to us as anature reserve in 1989 and is now a lovely mix ofponds, wildflower-rich grassland and shrubs.Easily accessible with good, level paths, you canwalk around the meadow, and sit overlooking theBristol Avon.Glimpse of the River AvonLocationFrom Melksham town centre take the Riverside Walk, which runs betweenthe River Avon and the Sainsbury’s supermarket car park. The path leadsdirectly into the nature reserve through gates. Grid ref ST 901 637. Suitable forpushchairs and wheelchairs.
