In January 2006, the Canadian government introduced new regulations concerning the VOC
(volatile organic compound) content of paint. This new law is intended to significantly reduce
the amount of VOCs in every container of paint.
As Sico is an environmentally conscious company, it had already taken the first step in the right
direction with the May 2005 launch of its Sico Ecosource paint, formulated to be ZERO VOC,
with the benefit of no unpleasant odour. At the beginning of 2007, Sico gave even further
weight to its commitment by completely eliminating VOCs from its Sico Design line of paints.
Sico Ecosource and Sico Design are high-performance, 100% acrylic latex paints that resist
freeze/thaw cycles and can accommodate the most stringent environmental requirements.
A few months ago, once again at the leading edge of trends, Sico was proud to introduce its
new Sico Expert line, whose VOC content was adjusted to meet with the new Canadian standard.
Since they are Green Seal certified, Sico Ecosource, Sico Design and the latex products in the
Sico Expert line are the top choices for obtaining LEED project certification. In addition, the
fact that all Sico latex paints are manufactured at our Beauport, Québec plant contributes
to their suitability for LEED certification.
From now on, you will be able to identify Sico products that adhere to the new regulations
by spotting the symbols (Illustration A) that will be appearing on our labels. What’s more,
the VOC content permitted varies according to product class; that’s why you will also find a
mention on our labels (Illustration B) that identifies a product’s exact VOC content.
replaced with the specified materials without cost to the owner.
The owner or the architect shall assign at the site a space or shed suitable for
the storage of the materials (min. 10°C (50°F), max. 26°C (80°F)). The contractor
shall maintain this accommodation in good condition and take the necessary
precautions against fire hazards.
6. EXAMiNAtioN oF SuRFAcES
The contractor shall inspect all surfaces to be painted before starting to paint.
When surfaces with normal preparation are considered unsatisfactory for paint
application, the contractor shall notify the architect or the general contractor of
this in writing. Starting of the painting task implies acceptance of the surfaces
without reservation, and the contractor will be responsible for the appearance
of the finish if it is not satisfactory.
7. SuRFAcE pREpARAtioN
Refer to Canadian standard CGSB 85 for any large-scale project. Paint application
shall not be started when the surface to be painted has not been properly
prepared. All surfaces must be dry, clean, free from dust, dirt, grease, oil, rust,
mortar spatters, salts and other foreign matter likely to affect the adhesion and
the appearance of paint finishes.
Surfaces previously painted and in good condition do not usually require priming,
but should be dulled with sandpaper if glossy.
Dust and dirt: Dust carefully. If dirt remains, wash and scrub with a detergent
or with an alkaline cleaner, such as POLYPREP trisodium phosphate (T.S.P.)
771-137, then rinse. Where mildew is present, wash with a household bleach
solution (1:3 household bleach:water).
Grease, oil, tar: Wash with a rag soaked with POLYPREP mineral spirits
875-104, taking care not to spread the soiled spots over larger areas. Wipe dry
with a clean rag. Repeat the cleaning operation if necessary.
WOOD
A) InterIOr WOOD – PAInt fInIsh
Seal knots and sap streaks with POLYPREP shellac 205-112. Smooth rough spots
with sand paper, then dust. Fill nail holes and cracks with putty or spackling
compound once the primer coat has dried.
B) InterIOr WOOD – CleAr fInIsh
Carefully remove all stains, pencil marks and excess glue. Iron stains may be
removed with a wood bleach or with a water solution of oxalic acid (caution:
poison). Sand rough spots following the grain of the wood.
Apply the stain or sealer coat. Fill holes and cracks with plastic wood or putty
tinted to match the colour of the wood.
C) exterIOr WOOD – PAInt fInIsh – OPAque stAIn
Make sure the wood is perfectly dry and contains no more than 12% moisture,
as measured with a moisture meter.
The surface must be clean, free from dirt and oil stains. Seal knots and
sap streaks with POLYPREP shellac 205-112 after burning or scraping resin
exudations. Sand rough spots. Fill holes and cracks with putty after the primer
coat has dried. Wood treated with a preservative must be free from all traces
of solvent.
D) exterIOr WOOD – semI-trAnsPArent stAIn
Sand rough spots. Remove stains and pencil marks either by scraping, sanding
or chemical bleach (see B).
Only after staining, fill holes and cracks with putty tinted to match the colour
of the wood.
p.

e) COnCrete
Concrete shall have cured for at least 28 days. Remove all mortar spatters, loose
sand grains and dirt by raking or brushing. Fill holes, cracks, honeycombs and
other surface defects with a cement mortar and let harden.
If there are efflorescent salts, apply a muriatic acid formula (POLYPREP 771-127)
or a RUST-OLEUM phosphoric acid solution #108, letting it stand until bubbling
stops on the concrete surface (15 to 20 minutes). Rinse thoroughly with clear
water before surface dries. Repeat operation until concrete becomes rough. Let
surface dry. Muriatic acid is of no use in removing oils and other greasy
residues. Eliminate any trace of grease, tar or moulding oils by washing the
surface with RUST-OLEUM cleaning agent #3599, rinse and let dry. Solvents
should not be used to clean concrete since they dissolve contaminants and make
them further penetrate the concrete.
Highly polished concrete, tinted concrete, old concrete coated with a sealer
or any other unsuitable topcoat will require Blast Track mechanical treatment
before being recoated.
The presence of humidity in the concrete can hinder product adhesion and
hardness. It is necessary to test the level of humidity of the concrete surface
before coating application. To test the level of humidity of a previously cleaned
concrete surface:
1. Let concrete dry for 24 hours after cleaning and before testing for
humidity.
2. Before testing for humidity, ensure that the concrete temperature is above
15°C (60°F). Low temperatures slow down the migration of the humidity and
give false results.
3. Test surface humidity in 4 or 5 places. An electrode moisture meter can be
used (humidity level must not exceed 4% of mass) or fasten plastic film with
masking tape to surfaces to be tested. Plastic film must remain in place for
24 hours if the temperature is above 20°C, 3 days if the temperature range
is between 5 and 20°C. Testing cannot be done if the temperature is lower
than 5°C. Once required time has elapsed, check for any trace of humidity
(droplets under the plastic film).
4. If no humidity is present, apply the product of your choice. If humidity is
found, install false flooring that includes a moisture barrier.
BrICKs, stOnes, BlOCKs AnD Other mAsOnrY
Remove all mortar spatters and foreign matter. Use a broom or stiff brush to
remove salts, dust and loose aggregates.
When asbestos-cement is to be used for exteriors, coat both faces of the panels
to prevent water absorption that can cause efflorescence.
f) WAllBOArD (GYPsum BOArD)
The surface must be clean, nails countersunk and holes filled. Sand joints lightly
where rough or grainy, then dust clean.
G) PlAster
Make sure the finish coat of plaster has dried and hardened at a temperature
not below 12°C (55°F), and that the room has been properly ventilated. Dry
plaster should not contain more than 6% moisture, as measured with a moisture
meter. Fill all cracks with patching plaster after widening them. Scrape away
any grit and rough edges.
h) metAls
Iron and steel (small surfaces)
Remove rust, mill scale, welding flux and other solid contaminants with a power
wire brush or sandblast (if needed). Hand cleaning with a wire brush or with
emery cloth is acceptable for small work. Treat the metal with CORROSTOP ULTRA
metal conditioner and rust remover 635-104, rinse with clear water, and then
wipe dry. Apply the anti-corrosion primer as soon as possible after cleaning the
metal (as soon as the surface is dry: not more than 4 hours).
p. 4
Iron and steel (large surfaces)
Steam blasting is recommended for the removal of grease, oil, salts, acids,
alkalis and any similar chemical residue on large surfaces. To ensure maximum
efficiency, steam blasting should be combined with an alkaline cleaning (using
a concentrated solution of trisodium phosphate – TSP – POLYPREP 771-137).
• Surface must be completely dry and free of any residue prior to application
of coating.
• A rust-inhibiting primer must be applied to the surface as soon as possible
after cleaning and drying surfaces (maximum of 4 hours).
Very rusty iron and steel (large surfaces)
Sand blasting is the most efficient method for cleaning steel surfaces. This type
of cleaning treatment is recommended in order to remove tartar, scaly rust and
any other existing coating.
Certain metals and alloys require a special surface preparation.
Shop-primed steel and cast
Wash all surfaces with POLYPREP thinner 875-104 to remove grease, oil, dirt
and dust. If rust has appeared on areas where the primed steel and cast have
been damaged, remove the rust with a wire brush, then touch up the bare metal
with an alkyd primer for metal 922-260 or 525-727.
Galvanized metal
Clean with CORROSTOP ULTRA metal conditioner 635-104 to assure better
adhesion of the paints after oily or greasy stains have been removed with
POLYPREP 875-104. Then apply a coat of CORROSTOP ULTRA latex primer
635-045. If rust is present, it should be removed with CORROSTOP ULTRA rust
remover 635-104, and the affected areas covered with an alkyd primer for metal
922-260 or 525-727.
Note: Never use muriatic acid (hydrochloric), vinegar (acetic acid), copper
sulphate or other preparations not suited for treating galvanized metal.
Aluminum and light alloys
Aluminum exposed to corrosive environments requires protection with paint. Clean
the surface with CORROSTOP ULTRA 635-104. Use an alkyd primer for metal
922-260 or 525-727 or CORROSTOP ULTRA latex primer for metal 635-045, but
never use a primer that contains lead.
Note: For galvalum, use latex primer 635-045.
Copper, brass, bronze and stainless steel
Clean with CORROSTOP ULTRA metal conditioner 635-104. No primer required:
apply the finishing paint or varnish directly over the cleaned metal. Etch stainless
steel lightly with sandpaper for metal.
I) ACOustICAl tIles
Seal stains with POLYPREP shellac 205-112 or POLYPREP stain killer or primer
145-series. Spot prime with SICO EXPERT alkyd undercoater 880-114.
J) Other mAterIAls
Ceramic, melamine, Formica, stratified material, glass, plastics and PVC.
Surface must be clean, dry, free of dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax and any other
contaminant that could reduce the primer adhesion.
Fibreglass
A light cleaning with acetone is recommended in order to etch the surface.
Ceramic, melamine, Formica and stratified material
Sand surfaces with a grade 100 to 150 sanding paper before applying POLYPREP
primer 145-033. This sanding will remove any sheen and create a surface profile
favourable for maximum primer adhesion.

K) Pre-fInIsheD sIDInGs (exterIOr)
No primer is required on pre-finished sidings that appear in good condition. In
order to obtain best results, a good surface preparation is necessary.
The surface to be painted must be dry, clean, free from dust, gum, grease, oil,
rust, mildew, old flaking paint and all other foreign matter. Sand the surfaces
lightly and wash with a concentrated cleaning solution of trisodium phosphate
POLYPREP 771-137 and bleach (1 cup for 1/2 gallon of water) to get rid of mildew,
chalking, dirt, etc. If the paint is flaking, remove all loose particles by scraping,
then sand to smooth the outlines.
Pre-finished sidings (steel metal)
Clean with CORROSTOP ULTRA metal conditioner 635-104. Rinse with clear water.
Prime bare spots with alkyd primer for metal 922-260 or 525-727.
Pre-finished sidings (masonite)
Prime bare spots with SICO EXPERT exterior wood primer 980-110.
Pre-finished sidings (galvanized metal, aluminum)
Clean bare metal with CORROSTOP ULTRA metal conditioner 635-104. Rinse
with clear water. Prime bare spots with an alkyd primer for metal 922-260 or
525-727 or with CORROSTOP ULTRA latex primer 635-045.
Vinyl sidings
Sand lightly and clean very well before painting. Never apply a shade darker
than the original colour, unless that was a pastel shade.
Recommended finishing
See the paint selection charts.
l) PreVIOuslY PAInteD surfACes:
Previously painted surfaces must be clean, dry, free from dust, oil, grease, rust,
soap, wax, loose paint or other contaminants.
Loose paint
Scrape and sand. Clean very well (according to section 7) and prime bare spots
with recommended primer (see paint selection charts).
8. WoRKMANSHip
All work shall be executed with care by skilled painters. The paint shall be applied
in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. The same brand of paint
shall be used for all coats of paint.
Before painting, remove all hardware, door and drawer handles and store them in
an orderly manner. Replace them after painting is completed. Surfaces not to be
painted shall be protected from paint spatters, runs or other damage resulting
from paint application by using dropcloths or masking tape.
All paints shall be thoroughly mixed to a uniform consistency, leaving no deposit
at the bottom of the containers. If thinning is required, no thinner other than the
one recommended by the manufacturer shall be used.
All paints, stains, varnishes or other coatings shall be applied evenly without
streaks, runs, misses, brush marks or other defects in order to obtain the
specified finish and colour.
All coats of paint shall be dry before applying the finishing coat. Primers,
undercoats and intermediate coats shall be sanded smooth before applying
the finishing coats.
