GAB Class of 2019-20Equipping girls to leadnow AND in the future5Over the past 16 years, more than 170 youngwomen have participated in the Girls AdvisoryBoard (GAB), our nationally recognized girls'grantmaking program. Through GAB, ChesterCounty high-school girls have the chance tolearn about the deep and varied needs in theircommunities and equip themselves with theskills needed to address them.Since the start of GAB, these young women wereempowered to award over $320,000 to localagencies tackling issues like poverty, domesticviolence, homelessness, support for singlemoms, and mental health. Along the way, GABmembers learn about many of the componentsof being strong leaders today and in their future.5"GAB was very insightful and oneof my most meaningful experiencesof high school. I have gained so muchmore knowledge on social issues inour community.""I'm empowered to stay involved inphilanthropy and continue my passionfor making the world a better, saferplace for women.”
GirlGov meets with electedofficials at kick-off retreatCongresswoman Chrissy Houlahanwith members of GAB and GirlGovThis past year, in response to a growing interestamong girls in our programs in civic engagement,CCFWG partnered with the Women and GirlsFoundation in Pittsburgh to start a local ChesterCounty chapter of its GirlGov program.GirlGov Chester County members worked onadvocacy campaigns in three committees focusedon racial justice, climate change, and comprehensivesex education in public schools. Participants gainedadvocacy skills and increased their confidence inusing their voice for change: “I've become a strongerleader and a better listener through GirlGov, andI'm starting to develop that skill of balancing andrepresenting the opinions of a complex group,which is a fantastic thing to learn.”-GirlGov memberGirls in Action SummitCCFWG hosted our second annual Girls in ActionSummit in a virtual format. The theme was the impactof COVID-19 on local women and their families. TheSummit featured star athlete Mo'ne Davis as keynotespeaker and brought together high school girls fromChester County for a one-day experience focused oncommunity, philanthropy, and fostering change.Attendees awarded $500 mini-grants to two localnon-profits: Domestic Violence Center of ChesterCounty and Chester County OpportunitiesIndustrialization Center.Virtual Girls in Action SummitGirls Giving BackGAB and GirlGov members stepped up this yearduring COVID-19 to give back. GirlGov memberBecky launched an outreach program at hersynagogue; GAB member Monica collected t-shirtsfrom family and friends to be made into masks 6forfrontline healthcare workers at local hospitals.6
