Chair’s Welcome Message: The 2012 Joint Rail Conference (JRC) is the principal, multi-disciplinary, rail and transit research conference in North America. This year, the organizers selected TECHNOLOGY TO ADVANCE THE FUTURE OF RAIL TRANSPORT as the conference theme and issued a worldwide call for papers and presentations that resulted in an overwhelming response. Hundreds of abstracts were received from six different continents and over 20 different countries on a wide variety of rail and systems engineering, transportation, management, planning, safety and operations topics. The conference program will include 2 ½ days of concurrent spoken presentation sessions in over twenty-five different topic areas, a special poster presentation session, invited speakers and plenary sessions. Session topics will cover all aspects of railroad civil, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering topics, as well as rail safety, planning, design, financing, operations and management. Topics include all aspects of freight and passenger rail transport with special focus on the conference theme of Technologies for the Future of Rail Transport. The JRC 2012 Conference Tracks are listed below: Railroad Infrastructure Engineering Track systems and components, rail bed substructure engineering, bridge engineering, electrical network and best maintenance practices Rail Equipment Engineering Motive power technology, vehicle/track interaction, wheels, couplers, components, rolling stock design, manufacturing and maintenance Signal & Train Control Engineering Systems integration, track and wayside components, equipment components, positive train control, CBTC, interoperability and microprocessor control Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Energy conservation & efficiency, design issues & resource management, emissions reduction & control 3 Service Quality & Operations Research Service availability, capacity, reliability, passenger communication, information systems, transport mode integration and fare collection Planning and Development Project management, planning & financing, new start and expansion development, service planning, environmental impact and workforce development. Safety and Security System safety, risk analysis, accident avoidance, accident mitigation, human factors, hazmat handling, emergency management and security Urban Passenger Rail Transport Capacity enhancements, shared corridors, engineering for throughput/speed and high speed rail considerations In addition to the presentations there will be technical tours of the engineering research facilities on the Temple campus, as well as Amtrak and SEPTA rail facilities. The JRC is a cooperative effort of the seven co-sponsoring organizations, IEEE, ASCE, ASME, AREMA, TRB, INFORMS, and APTA. The expertise and perspective offered by these organizations has ensured a rich and rewarding mix of topics included in the program. The conference is being hosted by the Engineering Program of Temple University located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and will be held April 17-19, 2012 on the Temple main campus in North Philadelphia. Hotel rooms have been blocked in center city Philadelphia and convenient transportation is available between the hotels and the Temple Campus via SEPTA Regional Rail trains between Market East, Suburban Station and Temple University Station. The Broad Street subway also offers frequent service between Center City and Temple’s main campus (Cecil B. Moore Station) as well. We anticipate an exciting, informative and highly timely conference and hope that you can attend. We look forward to seeing you at JRC 2012! David Thurston
