how that many people even knew there was a "Weogufka". You have put us on
LaNelle Jennings
**********
I ran across a real interesting bit of trivia while reading Brewer's "History of Coosa
County": the old Creek town of Weogufka was not located where it is now but was on the
banks of Weogufka Creek and was about where Old Weogufka Church is now. The town
of Weogufka, that we know now, was called Bazemore's Crossroads until the Indians were
removed in 1838, and white settlers flooded into the area to buy the Creek land. The new
5 | P a g e
white settlers preferred the land on the North side of the mountain, rather than on the
South side of the mountain, where the Creek town of Weogufka was located, as the land
near Bazemore's Crossroads was flat, less rocky and was better for farming. Isn't that an
awesome bit of history !!?? Who knew ??!! I surely didn't.
The Dixie Melody Boys are an American Southern Gospel quartet from Kinston, North Carolina. They
have been active for over 50 years.
The group was founded in 1961 by Avis Adkins; Ed O'Neal, their bass singer, joined in 1963, and
subsequently became the group's leader and manager. Under O'Neal, the group became something of a
training ground for singers who would go on to have significant careers in the field of Southern gospel,
including McCray Dove with the Dove Brothers, Rodney Griffin with Greater Vision, Harold Reed with
The Kingsmen, Derrick Selph of Brian Free and Assurance, Dustin Sweatman of Mark Trammell Quartet,
Bryan Walker, who went on to become a contestant on Season 9 of American Idol and then later joined
The Perrys, and Devin McGlamery with Signature Sound. The group was nicknamed the "Ed O'Neal
University" because of the impact they have had on Gospel music.
The group has had more than twenty hits in the Southern gospel field, including "Antioch Church Choir",
"Double Dose", "Don't Point a Finger", and "When the Son of My Life Goes Down". The group has
released a large number of albums and numerous VHS videos and DVD's. They have also won countless
awards and even received a Grammy nomination.
[citation needed]
Ed O'Neal has received the Marvin Norcross Award and was inducted into the Southern Gospel Museum
and Hall of Fame in 2004.
On January 1, 2011, The Dixie Melody Boys became the latest inductees into the Christian Music Hall of
Fame. [1]
In February 2011, the Dixie Melody Boys received 7 Top 5 nominations in the Christian Voice Magazine
Fan awards.
