Weogufka Center for Arts, Entertainment, and Education Inc. is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit 

organization. Located in Historic Weogufka Alabama established in 1832. The 

Weogufka Center is Associated with The Nashville Songwriters Association International. The 

Alabama RSVP program. The Weogufka Neighborhood Watch. The Coosa County voting 

locations, The Eagles Nest Life Center. The Weogufka School Preservation Committee, The 

Weogufka High School Alumni Association, The Weogufka Volunteer Fire Department 

Functions, The Weogufka Antique Tractor Owners Club, The Weogufka Old Iron Owners 

Club, The Weogufka Mule Owners Club. The 4-H Club Events and practice fields for little 

league baseball. 

And coming soon on the campus will be the future home of the Weogufka Old Farm 

Museum. 

The Weogufka Center For Arts, Entertainment, and Education Inc. was founded April 

1, 2007. The Weogufka Center Campus was originally established as a school in 1888. The 

Historic Weogufka High School was established 1925. The current main building was 

established in 1941. The Weogufka School Campus became the Weogufka Center as a project of 

former students and friends to save this historic landmark from destruction.

It was all about the Sorghum! 

The Weogufka Center presented the Old Farm “N” Bluegrass day on October 22 nd 2011. 1450 people 

attended the event with 486 cars in the parking lot. The grounds were covered with Mules, Antique 

tractors, vendors, food, gospel music, country music, and bluegrass music. But the star of the day was the 

Sorghum Syrup being made at the Old Syrup Mill. The mules to pull the mules to pull the mill were 

furnished by the Weogufka Mule Owners Club directed by Mr. Billy Mann of Goodwater Alabama. The 

Sorghum Syrup program was headed by Melvin Palmer of Weogufka and Bobby Ezekiel of Weogufka 

with a lot of volunteers who helped. The Sorghum was planted on a 5 acre plot which was plowed up 

during the Mule Day Festival back in April this year. After it was over Bobby and Melvin were 

wondering what to do with grounds and they suggested we add making of Sorghum to our Old Farm N 

Bluegrass Day. So let’s plant this land in Sorghum and see if we can find a mill and someone to cook the 

Sorghum. We now have three mills one of which is a two mule set up. Mr. Tom Caffee of Weogufka 

volunteered to help and has cooked the Sorghum with the help of Mr. Rodney Ponder of Talladega 

Alabama for the last two years. Working at the Sorghum Mill was Mr. Tom Cafee of Weogufka, Bobby 

Ezekiel of Weogufka, Melvin Palmer of Weogufka, Billy Mann of Goodwater, Randy Helms of 

Weogufka, Donna Helms of Weogufka, Randy Helms of Weogufka, Paul Dunseith of Weogufka, and 

Jack Varner of Weogufka. And more not listed here. 

Not only is this an educational program but the sale of the syrup makes it a profitable program for the 

Weogufka Center. 

The day started with a Sausage “N” Biscuit breakfast cooked and served by Ms. Margaret Gardner and 

Ms. Kattie Hocutt of Alexander City Alabama. 

The Bluegrass Music stage was in the main building auditorium and was directed by Ms. Marty Fortner 

and starred her Bluegrass Buddies Band.

The Country Music was in the Gym this year and was directed by Ms. Corene Lackey of Hollins 

Alabama. The Sound System was handled by Mr. James Lackey of Hollins. On the Country Music Stage 

was Cabot Barden of Sylacauga, Jimmy Pope of Weogufka, Lora Ann McGrady of Sylacauga, Roger 

Vines of Rockford, Ryan Shurette of Montgomery, The Silver Line Dancers of Sylacauga, Tony 

Turner of Rockford, Rick Haynes of Rockford, and Jenifer Vinson of Clanton. 

The Gospel Music Stage was under the old oak tree and was directed by Mr. David McGalliard. On the 

Gospel music stage was Felicia Pope Kelly of Stewartville, Jimmy Gililand of Rockford, David 

McGalliard of Sylacauga, Jean Baxley of Sylacauga, Mary Lou Falkner of Weogufka, Sue Clough of 

Sylacauga, and Alan Hughes of Weogufka. 

There was a big Old Farm Parade through historic downtown Weogufka at 02:30 PM led by Mr. Billy 

Jack Rayfield and followed by the Antique Tractors and all the Mules and Wagons and Horses and 

Wagons.

TV 47 Sylacauga Alabama 

Hosted by Jimmy Dale Abrams. 

Daybreak is one of many brand new television shows that have joined 

the TV 47 lineup. Jimmy Dale Abrams is the host and is also no stranger 

to the Sylacauga television market. As a former owner of TV 6 of 

Sylacauga, whom is now combined with TV 47, Jimmy and his morning 

production staff delivers today’s latest news, sports, weather, and obit's, 

all with a local flavor everyday live on TV 47. Daybreak airs weekday 

mornings live at 5:30am, and a daily repeat at 8:30am and afternoons 

at 4:30pm. Daybreak is produced live at the TV 47 studios in downtown

Fall is in the air and September is the last of our fiscal year. Our calendar runs from October to 

September I want to congratulate each of you because you helped to get our total volunteer hours to over 

3000 each month. If we can turn in 3000 this month we will end the year with over 35,000 hours. For 

such a small county that is outstanding. We have grown so much this year. Our total volunteer hours for 

Oct. 2009-Sept. 2010 was 23000 hrs. Thank you for so diligently sending in your volunteer hours. I 

will include the timesheet as an attachment. This is just for those that like to use it. Thanks to the ones

Roger Vines 

Is the 2011 Weogufka Center Songwriter of the Year! 

Roger Vines is not only a County Extension director he is also a very talented songwriter. Roger 

was awarded the first place honors at the Weogufka Songwriter Finals on October 29 th 2011. 

Roger is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International and the Weogufka 

Center Songwriters. Roger has a song on the new Weogufka Songwriter CD which has just been

the Year. 

Second Place for the Songwriters 2011 competition was Gary Carlisle from Lay Lake. Gary has 

written several songs with a very commercial bad boy country sound. Gary is also a member of 

the Weogufka Songwriters. 

Third Place winner for the 2011 year was Songwriter and Mayor of Oak Grove Alabama Charles 

Merkel. Charles is a songwriter member of the Nashville Songwriter Association International 

and the Weogufka Songwriters Club. 

The Crowd favorite also a songwriter with a long list of songs and also on the new release of the 

Weogufka Songwriters is Rick Haynes. Rick has written a lot of songs with good commercial 

appeal.

November 12th The 70’s Old School Dance 

“Disc Jockey Fred Brooks will bring the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s to the Weogufka Center for 

a night of dancing. This show will have the center all in 70’s décor with the music that we all 

remember. There will be no dinner with this dance. The concession booth will be open with 

the World Famous Bobby Ezekiel Hamburgers and more. So plan to come and invite your 

friends to dance the night away with you at the Weogufka Center Old School Night. 

December 9th The Weogufka Center Great Southern Gospel Christmas Special with 

Diplomats Quartet, Smokey Mountain Reunion, The Florida Boys Produced by Don Riggins. 

“Don Riggins produces the Great Southern Gospel Shows for the Weogufka Center and has 

had some of the best of all gospel music appear. This Christmas Special Gospel show will end 

our season at the center with a bang. The Diplomats Quartet is a top rated gospel music 

quartet with a show that is second to none. On this bill are the Smokey Mountain Boys you 

going to be surprised who are in the group if you’re a fan of gospel music. And last but not

Brad is funny, talented, plays a bunch of instruments, and entertains the crowd with a humor

“Jerry Ryan is a well know entertainer in the Birmingham area having been with the Three on 

a string group for many years. Jerry’s Me and Blue Show is a funny, funny, show. This is a 

dinner and show.” 

February 11th The Weogufka Center Valentine Special Dinner and Dance with the 

Backstreet Band 

“Bring your sweetheart and dance the night away to music of the 60’s and 70’s with one of 

the best bands ever in this part of the world. The Backstreet band appears every valentine 

season at the center. This is a dance with a dinner. 

March 3rd Weogufka Southern Gospel Weekend with the Diplomats, and the Dixie 

Echo's produced by Don Riggins. 

“Great Southern Gospel Music on the Weogufka Center Stage, The Diplomats will return for 

their third appearance at the center along with the Dixie Echo’s and more. This is show only 

with no dinner but the concessions will be open.” 

March 10th Tribute to Loretta Lynn starring Tracy K Houston 

“You’ll be transformed to butcher holler when Canadian Born Tracy K Houston takes the stage 

for a tribute to the hall of fame legend Loretta Lynn. This is a dinner and show so be sure to

May 5th The Legendary Pineapple Skinners New Orleans Music Show. 

“Get ready for the music of New Orleans as the Original Legendary Pineapple Skinners take to
