Debate<br />
The Debate team continued its tradition <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> success at <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e Utah Speech Arts<br />
Classic at Skyline <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> la<strong>st</strong> fall. Twenty-four high schools brought<br />
<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>eir toughe<strong>st</strong> competitors to <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e all-debate events. <strong>Juan</strong> <strong>Diego</strong>’s team<br />
advanced to quarterfinals in policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and public forum debates.<br />
In Lincoln Douglas, Tyler Cain, Patricia Graham, and AJ Albro each won fir<strong>st</strong><br />
place in <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>eir respective divisions. Their effort, combined wi<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> Emmanuel<br />
Hurtado’s performance in <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e Junior varsity division, led to <strong>Juan</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> LD winning<br />
its second <strong>st</strong>raight sweep<strong>st</strong>akes award at <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e Speech Arts Classic.<br />
At <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e American Bar Association-Sponsored Young Lawyers tournament, <strong>Juan</strong><br />
<strong>Diego</strong> debaters won 18 awards. This was far more <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>an any o<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>er school <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>at<br />
participated. In open public forum, Ellen Martin and TJ Ota, as well as Hayes<br />
Johnson and Margaret Hazuka advanced to semifinals. Ellen and TJ went on to<br />
win fir<strong>st</strong> place. Meaghan Kelliher and Ka<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>erine McIntire won second place in<br />
novice public forum. In novice policy debate, Hank Schwab and Andy Moyle<br />
were quarterfinali<strong>st</strong>s, and Maria Fernanda Gomez and Adam Schmidt won second<br />
place. In open policy, Nick Roberts and Russell Aivazian were quarterfinali<strong>st</strong>s, and<br />
Robert Grange and Katie Roberts were semifinali<strong>st</strong>s. In novice Lincoln-Douglas,<br />
Clay Sanders was a semifinali<strong>st</strong> while AJ Albro won fir<strong>st</strong> place in <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e<br />
open division.<br />
<strong>Juan</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> debaters have competed on topics dealing wi<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> democratic<br />
rights, heal<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> care, and alternative energy. In a commitment<br />
to participate at <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e highe<strong>st</strong> levels <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> competition, <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e team will have<br />
attended several out-<<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong>-<strong>st</strong>ate tournaments before Chri<strong>st</strong>mas.<br />
