The Debate team continued its tradition <strong>of</strong> success at <strong>th</strong>e Utah Speech Arts
Classic at Skyline High School last fall. Twenty-four high schools brought
<strong>th</strong>eir toughest competitors to <strong>th</strong>e all-debate events. Juan Diego’s team
advanced to quarterfinals in policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and public forum debates.
In Lincoln Douglas, Tyler Cain, Patricia Graham, and AJ Albro each won first
place in <strong>th</strong>eir respective divisions. Their effort, combined wi<strong>th</strong> Emmanuel
Hurtado’s performance in <strong>th</strong>e Junior varsity division, led to Juan Diego LD winning
its second straight sweepstakes award at <strong>th</strong>e Speech Arts Classic.
At <strong>th</strong>e American Bar Association-Sponsored Young Lawyers tournament, Juan
Diego debaters won 18 awards. This was far more <strong>th</strong>an any o<strong>th</strong>er school <strong>th</strong>at
participated. In open public forum, Ellen Martin and TJ Ota, as well as Hayes
Johnson and Margaret Hazuka advanced to semifinals. Ellen and TJ went on to
win first place. Meaghan Kelliher and Ka<strong>th</strong>erine McIntire won second place in
novice public forum. In novice policy debate, Hank Schwab and Andy Moyle
were quarterfinalists, and Maria Fernanda Gomez and Adam Schmidt won second
place. In open policy, Nick Roberts and Russell Aivazian were quarterfinalists, and
Robert Grange and Katie Roberts were semifinalists. In novice Lincoln-Douglas,
Clay Sanders was a semifinalist while AJ Albro won first place in <strong>th</strong>e
open division.
Juan Diego debaters have competed on topics dealing wi<strong>th</strong> democratic
rights, heal<strong>th</strong> care, and alternative energy. In a commitment
to participate at <strong>th</strong>e highest levels <strong>of</strong> competition, <strong>th</strong>e team will have
attended several out-<strong>of</strong>-state tournaments before Christmas.
