Fair Trade Sustains a Community
Morgan Zajkowski and Jessica Carrizo could have spent <strong>th</strong>eir summer break from Juan
Diego lying on a beach. Instead, <strong>th</strong>ey went to Equador to experience and help preserve
<strong>th</strong>e Kichwa people. Morgan’s aunt runs Kallari, an organization <strong>th</strong>at has fostered economic
prosperity, using organic and standard fair trade practices in <strong>th</strong>e production <strong>of</strong> chocolate.
It not only supports <strong>th</strong>e Amazon people from <strong>th</strong>e harvest <strong>of</strong> cacao beans to <strong>th</strong>e distribution <strong>of</strong>
chocolate, it plays a role in increasing <strong>th</strong>e standard <strong>of</strong> living for <strong>th</strong>e developing nation. Morgan
said <strong>th</strong>at tribes like <strong>th</strong>e Kichwa, <strong>th</strong>ough isolated in <strong>th</strong>e rainforest, are able to survive and preserve
<strong>th</strong>eir culture <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e efforts <strong>of</strong> organizations like Kallari wi<strong>th</strong>out being exploited.

Our greatest historical figures were known for <strong>th</strong>eir efforts to bring about peace for mankind. At Juan
Diego, serving and giving are as imperative as science and ma<strong>th</strong>. Every year we are astounded to
learn about <strong>th</strong>e small and significant acts <strong>of</strong> benevolence from our students and alumni. To follow
are just a few examples <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>e humanitarian efforts our young people are leading...
Adam Hughes ’06 has been studying political science, film and media at Colgate University. In
May last year, Adam traveled to Japan wi<strong>th</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> 28 fellow classmates who were taking a
course called “Core Scientific Perspectives: The Advent <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>e Atomic Bomb.” The group visited
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two cities annihilated by atomic bombs dropped in World War II. Adam
was asked to speak at <strong>th</strong>e Nagasaki National Peace Memorial during a special forum. He explained
<strong>th</strong>e importance <strong>of</strong> meeting survivors and seeing for himself <strong>th</strong>e impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>at war, noting <strong>th</strong>at simply
reading accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>th</strong>eir experience cannot compare wi<strong>th</strong> physically interacting wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>eir history.
Documentary films are a pr<strong>of</strong>oundly powerful tool for preserving and carrying forward <strong>th</strong>e stories and
perspectives to <strong>th</strong>e next generation. Adam’s experience abroad surely honed his technical ability, helping
him create a medium <strong>th</strong>at will not only impart historical facts, but record <strong>th</strong>e emotional impact
<strong>of</strong> our actions.

A MOMENT IN HISTORY
In 2002, Melissa Buck who played lead in <strong>th</strong>e play “Anne Frank” won
Juan Diego’s first ever State Championship in Drama Competition.
