Our greate<strong>st</strong> hi<strong>st</strong>orical figures were known for <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>eir efforts to bring about peace for mankind. At <strong>Juan</strong><br />

<strong>Diego</strong>, serving and giving are as imperative as science and ma<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>. Every year we are a<strong>st</strong>ounded to<br />

learn about <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e small and significant acts <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> benevolence from our <strong>st</strong>udents and alumni. To follow<br />

are ju<strong>st</strong> a few examples <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e humanitarian efforts our young people are leading...<br />

Adam Hughes ’06 has been <strong>st</strong>udying political science, film and media at Colgate University. In<br />

May la<strong>st</strong> year, Adam traveled to Japan wi<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> a group <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> 28 fellow classmates who were taking a<br />

course called “Core Scientific Perspectives: The Advent <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e Atomic Bomb.” The group visited<br />

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two cities annihilated by atomic bombs dropped in World War II. Adam<br />

was asked to speak at <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e Nagasaki National Peace Memorial during a special forum. He explained<br />

<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e importance <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> meeting survivors and seeing for himself <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e impact <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>at war, noting <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>at simply<br />

reading accounts <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>eir experience cannot compare wi<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> physically interacting wi<<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>eir hi<strong>st</strong>ory.<br />

Documentary films are a pr<<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong>oundly powerful tool for preserving and carrying forward <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e <strong>st</strong>ories and<br />

perspectives to <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e next generation. Adam’s experience abroad surely honed his technical ability, helping<br />

him create a medium <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>at will not only impart hi<strong>st</strong>orical facts, but record <<strong>st</strong>rong>th</<strong>st</strong>rong>e emotional impact<br />

<<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> our actions.<br />
