The Regional District of Central<br />

Kootenay (RDCK) board has<br />

approved a service agreement<br />

between the RDCK and the City of<br />

Nelson for bylaw enforcement to<br />

monitor the Nelson & District Community<br />

Complex (NDCC) parking<br />

lot. Effective December 1, 2020, the<br />

NDCC lot will be a two-hour parking<br />

zone, from 9 am to 5 pm, and<br />

enforced by the City of Nelson. Violators<br />

will be subject to ticketing and/<br />

or potential towing.<br />

The agreement was reached after<br />

in depth research was conducted<br />

to monitor, evaluate and consider<br />

options to address the negative<br />

impact of unauthorized parking.<br />

Parking capacity has been an ongoing<br />

challenge for<br />

residents in the area<br />

attempting to access<br />

services at the NDCC<br />

due to non enforcement.<br />

The goal is to<br />

create more parking<br />

opportunities for<br />

NDCC users, while<br />

supporting an effective approach to<br />

parking enforcement that is consistent<br />

with other areas throughout the<br />

City of Nelson.<br />

Bylaw enforcement will begin with<br />

an “Education” program during the<br />

month of December. Vehicles will be<br />

monitored by enforcement officers<br />

and warnings for “failing to comply”<br />

will be issued to ensure the community<br />

is provided with adequate time<br />

to adjust to the changes.<br />

“We do not want to ticket our community<br />

members; however, we need<br />

to create accessible options for our<br />

diverse community to park within<br />

reach of the facility to allow access<br />

for those with mobility issues, large<br />

equipment and young children to<br />

reach us safely,” said Marty Benson,<br />

Manager of Recreation, NDCC. “We<br />

have heard from our community<br />

members how important this issue<br />

is for everyone. We encourage everyone<br />

to work together with us to support<br />

appropriate parking lot usage.”<br />
