Selkirk College UAS Awards
Selkirk College students determinedly pushing towards the end of
the winter semester hit pause to recognize outstanding achievement
in the classroom over the last academic year. The annual UAS Excellence
Awards are handed out to celebrate students in the School of
University Arts & Sciences for both masterful marks and fantastic
effort. A total of 77 learners received awards in a plethora of study
areas that include humanities, social sciences, sciences and applied
sciences.
“We’d like to thank all the award recipients for being excellent and
all the ways in which you have enriched the environment here,” said
Leesa Dean, a Creative Writing Program instructor and coordinator
of the School of University Arts & Sciences. “If you are receiving
an award today, it’s because one of your instructors nominated you.
They may have nominated you for your excellent grades, or for the
incredible ways you grew and pushed yourself as a student in their
class. Whatever the reason, you stood out to them. We hope you will
take some time today to recognize your own achievements.”
The School of University Arts & Sciences has more than 100 university-level
classes to choose from in 28 subject areas from history
to economics, geology to engineering and almost everything in-between.
A vital part of regional post-secondary since Selkirk College
first opened its doors in 1966, students are provided interactive
classes and experiential learning opportunities from an academic
team of highly qualified instructors.
British Columbia has one of the best transfer systems in North
America, so students who start at Selkirk College can finish half of
the academic requirements before moving onto larger degree granting
universities for the final two years.
“We each face our own challenges in life and we each have our
own strengths to overcome them,” said Jennah Al-Hanafy, who
spoke on behalf of students at the UAS Awards ceremony on the
Castlegar Campus. “What I hope to see is that we can make the most
of this greatness, of this talent, of this passion, and that we can share
our gifts. I am sure we all know there is space for so much improvement
in this world, and I truly believe that we can make it better. It
will be hard work, but if today proves anything, it’s that you are hard
workers.” Applications for the September 2024 start in the School of
University Arts & Sciences are now being accepted. You can learn
Captain Kangaroo Trail
Selkirk College alumna Sarah Meunier’s passion for outdoor
recreation and leadership in creating quality rides for the
region’s mountain biking community has landed Castlegar at
the top of a prestigious global list.
At the end of 2023, Trailforks released its top-10 rated
mountain bike trails from across the planet. A high quality
trail management system for outdoor enthusiasts in a
variety of sports, the Trailforks app collected input from its
users and the 4.4 kilometre mountain bike trail in the Merry
Creek recreation area dubbed “Captain Kangaroo” was rated
number-one.
“At first I was shocked because I didn’t know it was going
to happen,” says Meunier, who is the executive director of
the non-profit Castlegar Parks & Trails Society (CPTS). “But,
it’s based on user ratings, so out of 600,000-plus trails in the
world on Trailforks, Captain Kangaroo was chosen as the best.
It is a substantial accomplishment, it’s legitimate and we are
very proud.”
A graduate of the Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program,
Meunier began volunteering with CPTS while still a student
on the Castlegar Campus. After graduation in 2013, she
started working seasonally as a maintenance crew lead and
trail builder. Meunier has been the executive director of CPTS
since 2020 in a part-time, year-round role.
The society is a charitable non-profit organization that
builds and maintains environmentally sensitive, non-motorized,
mountain biking and on-foot traversable trails. Working
on projects like the Trans Canada Trail through the greater
Castlegar area and the bike park in Millennium Park, CPTS
has been actively building new mountain biking trails in the
Merry Creek area.
The genesis of Captain Kangaroo started in 2018 when
Meunier and legendary local trail builder Dave Sutton began
scouting missions in the Merry Creek area. Once a line was
chosen and volunteer David J. Hall helped secure funding to
hire a crew specifically for trail construction, work started
on what would become the 4.4 kilometre downhill trail and
accompanying upward traverse. The intensive project was led
by Meunier with trail crew members Evan Dux, Jason Carmichael,
Jack Allen and Clarke Morris.
The effort has paid off with the Trailforks recognition that
also includes top trails in locations from Whistler to Vermont
and New Zealand to Czech Republic.
“Captain Kangaroo isn’t just a trail—it’s a rite of passage,”
states the Trailforks website. “Its flawless flow and ridiculously
smooth sections make it a trail masterpiece that showcases
jaw-dropping alpine views along the way—that is, if you can
even tear your eyes away from the trail.”
Quick to give credit to all the paid crew and volunteer team
that helped make Captain Kangaroo a reality, Meunier says
there was literally a labour of love element to the creation
of the trail. Meunier and Sutton began a romantic relationship
seven years ago, spending “date outings” in area forests
colville
509-684-2584
colvillemonument.com
working on trails and enjoying the outdoors.
“It’s been pretty cool to work with Dave,” says Meunier, who
is a heli-ski guide and volunteer ski patrol during the winter
months. “He is a very talented mountain biker who started
building trails at a very young age. He saw that Nelson and
Rossland had all these trails, so he took it upon himself to
start building more trails in Castlegar. His vision and initial
leadership really helped build the mountain biking scene in
Castlegar. It took us a long time to just have enough quality to
be even be considered a mountain biking destination.”
Building and maintaining trail systems requires a massive
amount of work behind the scenes. In her role as executive
director, Meunier carries out a variety of tasks from GPS mapping
and grant writing to negotiations with private land owners
and government to ecosystem knowledge and surveying.
For this, Meunier is grateful for the education she received in
the two-year Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program.
“I have always enjoyed school, as long as I am interested in
the topic,” says Meunier, who is originally from Quebec and
first came west for snowboarding in the Rockies. “The program
was amazing with great instructors and practical skills
in the field. It was more than absorbing information, getting
to practice the skills was very valuable and the way I prefer to
learn.”
Now that Meunier has helped land Captain Kangaroo atop
the world, she is both excited and cautious about the future.
With responsible land stewardship serving as a foundation,
she will guide CPTS enthusiastically into its next chapter.
“What we lack
in quantity compared
to some
Courses Coming up in Nelson
other locations
in our region, we
definitely have in
quality,” she says.
“We have some
very passionate
and talented
people in our
community that
consistently show
up to help develop
and maintain
these trails. I’m
pleased that more
people will get to
discover Castlegar
and all the amazing
recreation that
is available here.”
Harley is a sweet boy looking for his forever home. He is a 14
month old Lab/Border Collie cross and would love a family who
enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and camping. He adores all
people he meets and is a high energy guy. He doesn’t fully enjoy
the company of another dog in the home and would prefer to be
an only fur child. He would love to be in a home with some older
children as he is quite big and very puppy like. If you think you
are the home for Harley, please fill out an application for him here:
Tending Campsites & Trails
In the Columbia Basin, there’s no denying the presence of
exceptional campsites and recreational trail networks, which
are among the best in the province, if not the entire country.
But what’s the secret behind their upkeep and management?
It’s not by chance. The recreation crews formed through a
partnership between Columbia Basin Trust and Recreation
Sites and Trails BC are one of several such entities making a
difference in the region. Here are some impressive figures:
116 recreation sites and trails overseen, seven outhouses
Kaslo Concert Society Presents...
Steve Cowan & Adam Cicchillitti
Guitar Duo
One of the world’s most decorated guitar duos of the new generation,
Canadian guitarists Adam Cicchillitti and Steve Cowan
have set a benchmark in the world of classical guitar with their
award-winning recordings, commissions of major orchestral
works, and competition performances.
Their impressive accolades include second prize at the 2023 and
third prize at the 2021 international ensemble competition by
the Guitar Foundation of America, arguably the world’s most
prestigious guitar ensemble competition.
at Sunnyside, Willow Home Gallery
School-aged children free when accompanied by an adult patron
dug, 54 tables built, nine fire rings added, three kiosks put
up, six entrance signs installed and nearly 200 kilometres of
trail maintained and inspected, all in the Columbia Basin
and all in the year 2023 alone.
As user numbers increase annually, there’s been a growing
need to improve and upkeep recreation sites and trails.
There’s a huge demand to develop the skills of Basin residents
through employment opportunities and specialized
training—which this program also does.
Over five years, the program has created 66 jobs in the
Basin, covering four recreation districts and overseeing 557
recreation sites and trails. For the 2024 field season, the four
crews will have three members each, creating 12 seasonal
positions in the Basin. Crew members gain useful skills and
leadership experiences that will forever come in handy, while
also having fun camping and making friends. “The campout
trips have been a highlight! Doing big crew cookouts, having
crib and Yahtzee tournaments after a day of trail building
was really fun,” says Dexter Gauthier, crew leader for the
Cranbrook crew in 2023. Based out of Cranbrook, Nelson,
Revelstoke and Invermere, crew members and leaders are
hired for about four months of field work. Training has a
strong emphasis on safety in an outdoor setting, such as the
proper use of hand tools, trail building, first aid, two-way
radio communications and wildlife safety. “Most of our crew
members come from an environmental background, which
means they’re very capable in the outdoors. Our training
The Kaslo Golf Club
wishes to extend Congratulations
to Mona and Darryl on their
retirement from the Husky Service Station.
We appreciate the time you have been
of assistance with our golf course
needs over the years.
We wish you all the best in your future.
builds on the skills they already have,” says Eskelin. Once
crews are trained, boots hit the ground. Following project
lists developed by area recreation officers, and working
alongside local clubs and volunteers, the crews undertake
tasks that range from reconnaissance and scouting to tree
planting, to the installation of much-needed infrastructure
like bridges, boardwalks, and tent pads.
Remote work is not uncommon with helicopters and boats
often part of the commute. Crashing in a tent after a longday
on the end of an axe or brush saw seemed like Club Med
for the outdoor-loving bunch; dealing cribbage hands over
the constant buzz of a mosquito swarm became commonplace
as camaraderie blossomed amongst crew members.
“The reward wasn’t just the view(s). To know that the work
we did opened up a trail for the public to experience was
the true reward and just part of what made it an unforgettable,
skill-building, friendship-creating and life-changing
season,” says Brennan Wittig, crew leader in Nelson in 2023.
The 2024 season will see an even stronger focus on collaborative
work between crew members. More concentrated
training will encourage overall team building, which in turn
will enable crews to partner effectively on larger projects.
“Our crew members all have unique skillsets that we want
to bring together on some cross-district work this year,” says
Eskelin. “There are multiple benefits of having our crews
work together, so we plan on making that happen more this
season.”
It’s an additional goal for an already-successful program.
The program has garnered positive attention elsewhere in
the province and is working as a blueprint to build off, with
16 other recreation districts having adopted its approach.
“This program has allowed us to enable community
vision. It’s been great to put our heads together and get some
of these important projects complete,” says Eskelin. “We’re
proud that the program has become a model.”
Since 2021, the program has helped create 152 positions,
with an additional 42 slated for the upcoming season. In
addition, since 2020, recreation-focused organizations have
developed, enhanced or maintained over 450 kilometres of
trails in the region with Trust support.
Discover 65 retiring or a reset..?
For the last 28 months, Discover Sixty-Five has filled a niche by providing a
local magazine for our West Kootenay Seniors and their caregivers.
We have delighted in the project of finding interesting and valuable information
to share and are forever grateful to our contributors... some of
whom have been with us since day one... like Terese Bowors - Cannabis
Corner, Emily Tucker IG Wealth and those who followed closely like Wendy
Lacroix our Registered Retirement Coach, and Bruce LaCroix the Senior-
Preneurship who encourages the imagination, and most recently Astrology
with Angele Ortega. Our home Chef Annette Gallant shared many quick
and easy recipes (and whose biscuits are still my favourite) until her garden
called her away from the typrwriter. For a short while staff from Shoppers
Drugmart Castlegar contributed and we had one or two submissions from
T.H.E. Pharmacy (Castlegar/New Denver/Kaslo) along with our Fishing articles
from Jones Boys Boats.
It has been a rewarding experience compiling every issue for you because
we feel our Seniors are very important members of our communities as do
these advertisers who have supported us...
