For the last 28 months, Discover Sixty-Five has filled a niche by providing a 

local magazine for our West Kootenay Seniors and their caregivers. 

We have delighted in the project of finding interesting and valuable information 

to share and are forever grateful to our contributors... some of 

whom have been with us since day one... like Terese Bowors - Cannabis 

Corner, Emily Tucker IG Wealth and those who followed closely like Wendy 

Lacroix our Registered Retirement Coach, and Bruce LaCroix the Senior- 

Preneurship who encourages the imagination, and most recently Astrology 

with Angele Ortega. Our home Chef Annette Gallant shared many quick 

and easy recipes (and whose biscuits are still my favourite) until her garden 

called her away from the typrwriter. For a short while staff from Shoppers 

Drugmart Castlegar contributed and we had one or two submissions from 

T.H.E. Pharmacy (Castlegar/New Denver/Kaslo) along with our Fishing articles 

from Jones Boys Boats. 

It has been a rewarding experience compiling every issue for you because 

we feel our Seniors are very important members of our communities as do

The Tale of Tom and Sharon Lymbery 

is 95 years long… more than 

we have room for here. 

We’ll share with you the flavour 

of the time and recommend you 

pick up a copy of the the delightful 

memoirs written by Tom. 

D65: Are you Kootenay Kids? 

TL: 100%. My sisters Ann, Kathleen, Alice 

and I were born locally. We lost my 

sisters, Ann at 4 and Kathleen, hours after 

her premature birth. 

My Dad, Arthur Lymbery moved to Gray 

Creek from Nottingham, England in 

1911. He was a lawyer there, but wanted 

“the good life” as was advertised as 

being available in rural Canada growing 

apples and cherries in the Kootenays. 

The “climate is friendly here and 

you can spend your time fishing and 

hunting while the trees grow on their 

own.“ 

My Dad had come to Gray Creek previously, 

and decided to purchase 100 

acres off John Patrick Redding – the first 

Gray Creek settler. Dad and his partner, 

Nottingham architect - Harry Goodall 

found themselves walking a plank

My mother 

Kathleen Warren 

along with 

my Uncle Tom Warren travelled from 

England to visit her best friend Ann 

Gooch who lived in Crawford Bay. They 

had served together in the Women’s 

Land Army during the war, filling in 

as farm workers for the men who had 

been enlisted. Dad met Mom through 

the Crawford Bay Women’s Institute. 

They married in 1921. 

SL: I was born in Kimberley, my Dad 

was a miner there. He was transferred 

to the Bluebell Mine in Riondel where he 

bought an acreage and the whole family 

moved with him. 

D65: What was it like growing up 

in such a rural location? 

TL: We really didn’t know anything 

else. Both our families had large acreages 

where we could roam. Growing 

up on an acreage kept us very busy. My 

first job was picking fruit of course. Both 

my sister and I started work in the store 

when we turned 12 and Mom trained 

us very carefully to serve our customers 

politely and efficiently and this is where 

I first met Sharon. I knew her for most 

of my life… and for the first few years 

she was just a little kid who was sent to 

the store by her mom… I would gather 

her list of items and send her home. 

There is 15 years between our ages… 

she was nothing special until I returned 

after attending a private school in Vancouver. 

I continued to 

work in the store after I 

graduated school where 

I ran into her some more 

until she went away and 

studied nursing - when 

she returned I suddenly 

realized she was very 

special. We were married 

in 19….?? 

D65: When did your parents start 

the Gray Creek Store? 

Mom and Dad added on to the original 

Redding ranch house where we lived 

until they built their new home, post 

office and store in 1928??. The community 

was about 380 people back then 

spread out along the lake. Dad and a 

few friends all invested $200 to start the 

store. We were in the perfect location 

for this venture as the paddle wheelers 

unloaded right beside our property. 

Dad had a good head for business and 

got along with the Post office, that we 

were paid to run. They started the store 

by just bringing in items that were requested 

at first, like pounds of tobacco 

(grown in the Okanagan) - they steadily 

expanded the service to offer groceries, 

building materials, woodstoves and 

luxuries like bird baths. Dad bought out 

his partners in 19?? 

D65: The community 

TL: Mom and Dad were very community 

minded. Having a store made them 

the hub for the community and kept 

them well connected to the larger world 

and the possibilities. They were grateful 

for the opportunities the move to Gray 

Creek gave them, and they always 

helped where they could. Bringing in 

new and exciting technology enabled 

our community to thrive. My parents 

retired in 1948 and I 

took over the store.

SAVINGS FOR SENIORS 

Here is a list of some tax benefits you can claim: 

Home Accessibility Tax Credit 

Seniors and persons with disabilities who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit can qualify for tax relief of 15% on up 

to $20,000 in eligible expenses. To be eligible, expenses must be incurred in relation to a renovation allowing for better 

mobility and functionality or reducing the risk of harm. 

Doubling the Pension Income Amount 

The maximum amount of eligible pension income that can be claimed has been doubled from $1000 to $2000. This 

results in even more savings that will make a real difference for pensioners. 

Increasing the Age Amount 

The Age Amount has been increased by $2000 to help low and middle-income seniors. Based on these increases 

and adjustments for inflation, in 2023 the Age Amount allows seniors to claim up to $8396 on their 2023 tax return, 

depending on the individual’s net income. 

Pension Income Splitting 

Generally, each individual Canadian pays taxes on their full income earned. Pension income-splitting allows any 

Canadian resident who receives qualifying pension income to allocate to their spouse (or common-law partner), with 

whom they reside, up to one-half of that income. By doing so, a pensioner and their family can dramatically reduce 

their tax load.

Getting rid of your stuff, or your parent’s stuff. 

Over the next 10 years, Canadians 

will inherit an estimated $1-trillion, 

the largest transfer of wealth in history. 

But all those investment portfolios 

and real estate assets being passed 

on by aging parents will also come 

with piles and piles of stuff with nowhere 

to go. 

Sorting, storing and disposing of old 

family belongings can be a very labour-intensive 

and will be the challenge 

in the next decade as baby 

boomers age. Sons and daughters 

who have faced the chore of decluttering,

Senior-Preneurship 

A SUPPORT GROUP FOR SENIORPRENEURS 

HI again. Well, 

after teaching 

entrepreneurship for over 30 years 

to over 5,700 people in Canada and 

the Caribbean, and at the suggestion 

of some readers, I’ll be starting 

a support group for seniorpreneurs 

in May. What is a seniorpreneur? A 

person over age 55 who has a business 

of any type: part time, money-making 

hobby, or a new career. 

Artists, writers, hobbyists, consultants, 

body workers, trades people, 

people in service businesses, and 

the list goes on. 

It’s a chance to share ideas, listen 

to some great speakers, maybe get 

ideas for a business, learn more 

about taxes and marketing and social 

media. Seniorpreneurs are way 

more successful at self-employment 

(whether full, part or casual time) 

than any other age demographic. 

We are at a stage of life where we 

have the knowledge, experience, 

energy and street smarts to do 

more than sit back and watch the 

world go by. By getting together, 

either in person or virtually, we 

have an opportunity to learn and 

share, and better ourselves and our 

business. Interact with great guest 

speakers, or be one yourself. Open 

to anyone over 55 who is even 

interested in exploring self-employment, 

or maybe already is doing 

something.

Spring Spice...A Story of Saffron 

Crocuses are my favourite spring 

flower. Which makes me think of Saffron! 

Saffron is the most expensive spice 

on Earth. This is because of the labour 

involved in growing and harvesting 

the spice. Saffron is the red-yellow 

stigma of the crocus flower and must 

be hand-picked during short annual 

flowering seasons. Each flower produces 

only three stigmas, so it takes 

approximately 150 flowers to yield 

just one gram of dry saffron threads. 

Luckily, very little saffron is needed for 

cooking. In fact, too much can make 

food bitter. 

Imitation saffron is rampant in markets 

around the world . In particular, 

beware of safflower petals, which 

look a little like saffron, but are nearly 

flavourless. Any time you see a big 

quantity of “saffron” (more than a couple 

grams) for an overly reasonable 

price, it’s almost certainly safflower. 

Fresh saffron has a distinctive earthy 

smell and flavour and imparts a bright 

orange colour to food. Saffron is a 

characteristic ingredient for a number 

of traditional dishes like bouillabaisse 

and paella, as well as many risottos. 

Try adding a few threads to basmati 

rice with Indian dishes to add a bit of 

flavour and turn your rice a beautiful 

golden colour. When adding saffron 

to a dish, add to a bit of liquid first 

to draw out the colour, or grind to 

a powder if no liquid is being used. 

Adding early in the cooking process 

gives more colour, adding late gives 

more flavour. 

Saffron is a powerful spice, high in antioxidants. 

It has been linked to health benefits, 

such as improved mood, libido, and 

sexual function, as well as reduced 

PMS symptoms and enhanced 

weight loss.
