I
THINK it would be fair to
say that nobody saw Tuesday
night’s performance
and result coming.
As disappointed as we were to
lose to such a late goal at Larne
last weekend, we were able to
take positives from the workrate
and intensity of our play
against such a strong team.
The plan was to carry that into
the Ballymena game and, if we
could also add in the creation of
a bit more in the final third, we
would set ourselves up to come
away with a win.
Unfortunately, none of that
happened.
Nothing that we had planned to
bring into the game was there
and it ended up being a comprehensive
win for Ballymena.
We’ve taken a lot of criticism
since then and rightly so and,
while the players’ confidence has
obviously taken a hit due to the
run we find ourselves on, we
have to snap out of it quickly.
It’s my job to get their heads up
and get them enjoying themselves
again. We seem to be
playing with a lot of burden on
our shoulders but whatever it
takes to get the best out of each
individual player - whether it be
an arm round the shoulder or a
kick up the backside - that’s
what we’ll do.
We can’t feel sorry for ourselves,
“
It’s only by rallying together as a group
that we can get back to the levels we want to
be at.
”
4
nor do we welcome pity from
outside. We have to work hard
and play our way out of things
ourselves. It’s only by rallying
together as a group that we can
get back to the levels we want to
be at.
We haven’t created enough opportunities
for our forward players
and when you don’t do that,
you’re always going to find
things difficult, so you can rest
assured that serious work will go
into that.
I know it’s been difficult for our
fans recently too because
nobody likes to see their
team keep getting beat. It’s a
harsh lesson for all of us at the
minute but I believe we can come
out of it stronger
and benefit from
those lessons in the
long run.
First and foremost,
we just have to
put an end to the
losing run - starting
today.
Our results over
the last few
weeks will have

that will get
our season
back on

R
ICHARD Brush says
Cliftonville can have no
excuses for Tuesday
night’s defeat to Ballymena
United and insists they
have no choice but to respond
this afternoon.
The Reds entered the midweek
game on the back of successive
away defeats to Dungannon
Swifts and Larne but their bid to
get back on track on
home turf
was dealt a
hammer
blow
when the
Sky Blues took
an early lead which
they extended by a further
three unanswered goals
after the break on an evening
when the hosts simply failed to
get started.
Goalkeeper Brush - beaten by
two deflected strikes and a penalty
in that rout - says that, while
Cliftonville have had to contend
with a crippling injury list all
season long, there is no justification
for such a lamentable
display.
“I thought the second-half in
Dungannon, our performance
might have saw us nick something,”
says the 36-year-old. “On
Saturday, Larne had lots of possession
of the ball but as a unit
we looked solid. It was tough to
lose in the final minutes but
Tuesday was an opportunity to
put it to bed. We didn’t play well
in any shape or form.
“If you want to put a positive
spin on it, the only way is up - if
you look at it, can it get worse
than it already is?
“Without making excuses, injuries
have taken their toll and
we’ve had to shuffle and change
and bits and pieces - which is no
excuse for the performance on
Tuesday evening.”
Ahead of this afternoon’s Danske
Bank Premiership encounter with
Portadown - who come into the
game on the back of a heavy loss
of their own, albeit two-and-ahalf
weeks have passed since
they shipped four goals to Carrick
Rangers - Brush admits he
isn’t concerned by the manner of
Cliftonville’s performance and
insists the priority must simply
be to collect three points to stop
the rot.
“We’ve got nothing to lose at the
minute and we’ve got to go give
it a rattle, whether that’s getting
behind the ball and getting at it
or playing football,” adds the
Birmingham-born stopper.
“Either way, we’ve got to do
something and respond with a
positive reaction.”
Adding to the Reds’ challenge
today will, of course, be the fact
that they will have no supporters
here to cheer them on.
Covid-19 restrictions imposed by
the Stormont Executive mean all
football will be played behind
closed doors for the next fortnight
and, though he acknowledges
it’s an unusual situation,
Brush admits it isn’t entirely
alien to him or his team-mates.
“It’s been a strange preparation
to the season, we came back for
the semi-final of the Irish Cup
and then we were out for a while
and we didn’t know what was
going on,” he recalls.
“The lads had been preparing
and kept themselves in great
nick. It was a strange one and
there have been matches called
off in the last couple of weeks. It
wasn’t hard to prepare but there
is a certainly a bit of unknown.
It’s like that for every Club and
we can’t be making excuses for
our performances in the last few
games. We’re just glad to be
back at it.”

A
FTER an 18-day break,
Portadown return to
action this afternoon
bidding to earn their
second win since resuming their
place in the Danske Bank Premiership.
Relegated at the end of the
2016/17 season, the Shamrock
Park faithful endured a testing
few years before finally confirming
their promotion from the
Bluefin Sport Championship - a
process which was elongated
when football’s Covid-enforced
shutdown threatened to render
their table-topping status potentially
irrelevant.
Six points clear of Ballinamallard
United when a halt was called in
March, Matthew Tipton’s men
had to wait until as recently as
October 14 to have their elevation
to the top-flight formally
ratified with the presentation of
the Championship trophy.
Just three days later, they commenced
their Premiership programme
with a mesmerising
defeat of Mid-Ulster Derby opponents
Glenavon.
In front after just seven minutes
thanks to Stephen Murray, the
former Mourneview Park favourite
doubled the Ports’ advantage
just past the half-hour and,
though the hosts would find the
net either side of Lee Bonis’
finish, a last-gasp finish from
Aaron Burns ensured a 4-2 victory
and three points to toast his
Club’s return to the big time.
They would fall back to Earth
with a substantial bump courtesy
of a 3-0 home defeat by Coleraine
the following week, but
the mitigating circumstances of
red cards for both Tipton and
Bonis perhaps encapsulated
their fortunes on a bad day at
the office.
They would respond with a point
against Warrenpoint Town -
where Murray was once again on
target against a former employer
- before running Linfield close
at Shamrock Park; Bonis’ finish
putting his side on track for a
battling point only for the Blues
to edge out a 2-1 success in the
aftermath of a dismissal for
former Cliftonville defender
Christopher Crane.
Though there were evident positives
to take from that display
against the Champions, Portadown
will have been particularly
concerned about their subsequent
trip to the Belfast Loughshore
Hotel Arena where, despite
taking a ninth minute lead
through Chris Lavery, they succumbed
to four goals as Carrick
Rangers registered their own
first victory of the campaign.
In such circumstances, an opportunity
to exorcise the demons of
a chastening loss like that is
often welcomed at a team’s
earliest convenience but, unfortunately
for Tipton’s men, fate
has contrived to keep them on
the sidelines for the two-and-ahalf
weeks since.
That experience could, of course,
go one of two ways for them,
with players either suffering a hit
to their match sharpness or
enjoying a timely rest in the
aftermath of a night they would
sooner forget.
Similarly, the unexpectedly
lengthy break may have afforded
Tipton’s charges the chance to
psychologically move on from
that setback without necessarily
having stewed over it during
their impromptu hiatus.
Regardless, there is no question
that Portadown will arrive today
hungry to hit the ground running
again and, buoyed by what they
have produced so far this term,
they will relish the challenge in
store.
