ONDAY night’s game

provided a mixture

of frustration and

encouragement

because, although we wanted

to take all three points from

Glenavon, the way things have

gone for us away from home

this season meant a draw wasn’t

a bad way to stop the rot.

It was also a fair outcome because,

overall, both sides had

their chances to go 1-0 up and

both had opportunities to win it

late on.

It was also another match where

I couldn’t fault the players for

what they’re putting in. At some

stage, they’ll get the reward they

deserve and the key is to keep

sticking at it. What a lot of people

outside our changing room

don’t see is that we have a lot of

boys playing through the pain

barrier for us.

On top of all the absences we’ve

had with injuries, we’ve also seen

the likes of Conor McDermott

and Joe Gormley taking painkilling

injections just to get out on

The lengths these boys are prepared to

go to in order to play for this Club shouldn’t

be understated.

4

the pitch. The lengths these boys

are prepared to go to in order to

play for this Club shouldn’t be

understated and, as a Manager,

it’s great to have a squad full of

people like that.

One of the side-effects of all the

chopping and changing to the

team - both in terms of starting

line-ups and in-game substitutions

- is that consistency of

performances and results can be

very hard to come by, as we’ve

discovered for ourselves.

It’s just one of those situations

you have to get on with and, as

results from one week to the

next have shown, it’s a strange

League during strange times for

everyone - not just in football

but in life in general.

Today’s game is another difficult

challenge but, given that we’re

at home and will have some

supporters back in the ground,

we have to fancy our chances

in.

Coleraine are clearly a top side

but, like us, haven’t had things

the way they’d like to this season,

but the quality

is still there, there’s

no doubt about

that.

From our point of

view, it’s a matter

of clicking into

gear at the right

time and hopefully

that point

against Glenavon

can

galvanise our

season.

In a few

weeks, we’d

love to look

back on that

as a turning

point for us

but the only

way we’ll be

able to do

that is if we

back it up

with big performances

and results -

starting

against

Coleraine

here

tonight.

W

HILE admitting he’s

still not sure how he

feels about emerging

with a draw

from Monday’s Danske Bank

Premiership encounter with

Glenavon, Jamie Harney is well

aware of the importance of

emerging with three points this

evening.

The Reds ended a run of four

consecutive away defeats when

Daire O’Connor’s goal at Mourneview

Park ultimately helped

Cliftonville to a share of the

spoils but, having taken the lead

with little more than 20 minutes

to play, central defender Harney

- who made his return from injury

in the game after five weeks

on the sidelines - reveals mixed

emotions about the final outcome.

“It’s hard to say whether it was a

point gained or two points

dropped,” he explains.

“I think it’s been a very hard few

weeks for the lads. We’ve played

games where we’ve played a lot

better and came away with nothing.

“In a way, that’s how we’ll probably

look at it – it’s definitely a

point that we’ll take because

Glenavon is never an easy place

12

to go. We’re hoping this can be a

kickstart.”

It was a home game against

Coleraine on this very weekend

last year that saw Cliftonville set

off on a memorable Christmas

and New Year holiday winning

streak that also included Premiership

victories over Crusaders,

Larne and Glenavon before their

run to the semi-finals of the Irish

Cup commenced with defeat of

Hanover.

With football’s upcoming shutdown

removing any opportunity

for a momentum-building festive

period this time around, Harney

says he and his team-mates can

look no further ahead than the

challenge the Bannsiders will

present in front of the BBC cameras.

“There is never a lot between us

and Coleraine,” he adds.

“I think we’re maybe both not

happy with our starts to the

season so we’re both going to be

looking to kickstart things for

ourselves.

“It will be a difficult game, we’re

under no illusions.

“Hopefully we can build on the

point against Glenavon and give

a good performance and get the

three points.”

Cliftonville have, of course, been

ravaged by injuries since before

the campaign even began, with

both Calvin McCurry and Donal

Rocks suffered cruciate ligament

tears sidelined prior to the resumption

of competitive action,

while Harney has been among

those forced to sit out for one

reason or another in the two

months since.

Levi Ives, Aaron Donnelly, Liam

Bagnall and Joe Gormley have

likewise been impacted, while

the likes of Ronan Doherty, Michael

McCrudden, Garry Breen

and Conor McDermott endured

their own struggles ahead of

Ryan O’Reilly having to retire in

the second-half of Monday’s

outing at Mourneview.

“I think it’s been difficult for the

team with the injuries and definitely

it’s been difficult individually,”

says Harney.

“I think I’ve only completed one

full training session in four or five

weeks. I was really happy to be

out there on Monday and helping

the team but there are improvements

to be made all over.

“Paddy doesn’t allow us to get

these inconsistencies and we’re

going to be working hard to

make it right.”

A

NY team that enjoys an

upturn in fortunes

after coming through a

sticky pitch can often

trace the very moment that

triggered an improvement in

circumstances - and Coleraine

will be hoping that last week’s

dramatic defeat of Warrenpoint

Town is the stimulant they have

been looking for.

A run of four defeats without

scoring a single goal was on the

verge of concluding with a battling

1-0 success only for disaster

to strike when the 10-man

visitors snatched a late leveller,

an entirely predictable development

for any team that has ever

found itself stuck in a rut.

Rather than accept their fate,

however, the Bannsiders rallied

to secure all three points courtesy

of an injury-time winner which

boss Oran Kearney will hope can

provide the platform for a strong

finish to 2020.

Following today’s encounter with

Cliftonville, the Stripes travel to

Ballymena United for the annual

festive derby before hosting a

Portadown side they have already

made light work of earlier

in the season - and a positive run

of form during those games

could be just the launchpad

Coleraine need to instigate a

renewed charge for the Danske

Bank Premiership title.

Firmly in the mix when last term

was brought to a swift conclusion

by the coronavirus pandemic,

Kearney’s side gave fair warning

of their intentions to carry on

where they had left off with

some admirable displays on the

European scene.

After seeing off La Fiorita of San

Marino, the Bannsiders sent

shockwaves through the continent

when they stunned muchfancied

NK Maribor with a penalty

shoot-out success in the first

qualifying round of the Europa

League.

That success set up a home date

with Motherwell, who appeared

to be cruising into the next phase

when they raced into a 2-0 lead

at The Showgrounds, only to be

pegged back and taken to another

shoot-out, where Northern

Ireland international goalkeeper

Trevor Carson proved to be the

hero for the Scottish Premiership

side.

When their attentions turned to

domestic matters, however, the

Bannsiders endured something

of a slow start when they

suffered a narrow opening night

reverse at the hands of Ballymena.

After getting on track with

wins over Portadown and

Glentoran, a madcap 4-4

draw at Glenavon on

November 7 would deliver

their final goals until

last week’s potentially

pivotal defeat of Warrenpoint.

The man who opened the scoring

in that encounter with the Lurgan

Blues, Stewart Nixon, was

the matchwinning hero last time

out, while Ben Doherty - who

netted a hat-trick at Mourneview

and broke the team’s scoring

drought seven days ago - is

another player likely to be central

to Coleraine’s hopes this

evening.

Having got that monkey off their

backs, three further points could

be just the catalyst they need.
