THE REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Memorial Breakfast
“The best remembrance of him is a promise to complete the work,
take the risks (he showed how), fulfill the Dream of justice and peace.”
January 21, 2019
Dear Friends,
With our country in great disarray and our tensions raw and exposed, I welcome you to our 34th annual celebration. We should
take time to reflect upon the significance of what we’ve accomplished in 34 years. In 1986 when we started the MLK Breakfast
on the East End of Long Island, only three years had passed since President Reagan had signed the holiday into law. It would
still take another fourteen years, or until the year 2000, before MLK, Jr. Day became a paid Federal holiday properly recognized
with a paid holiday for all state workers in all 50 states.
Dr. King’s legacy is tremendous. He moved a nation toward justice through civil rights demonstrations and advocacy; he called
upon people around the globe to live out creeds of love, peace and justice. Through resolute leadership, Dr. King brought about
passage of inclusive civil and voter rights legislation. His non-violent peaceful but powerful protest movement broke the back
of Jim Crow segregation and injustice in areas of voting rights, housing, and education. He raised the consciousness of our
nation to the fact that healthcare disparity was perhaps the worst injustice.
This 34th breakfast commemorating Dr. King’s legacy brings our community together at a time in our country when issues of
racism, cultural differences, religious hypocrisy, economic disparities, and political partisanship seemingly are at an all-time high.
Sadly, our country’s progress in the struggle for social justice over the last fifty-one years appears to be reversing and we are
headed in the wrong direction. Several provisions of the voting rights act have been uprooted; news is on the rise of election
tampering and wide-spread voter suppression. Right here on Long Island, segregated neighborhoods, school districts, and costly
housing divide us. Healthcare access was a priority issue in the recent mid-term elections. The King legacy is under assault.
In his sermon entitled “The Drum Major Instinct”, delivered at Atlanta Georgia’s Ebenezer Baptist Church on February 4, 1968,
Dr. King warned his audience about the inherent danger of a basic instinct that all of us share. We all like, perhaps even need,
recognition. When that need runs amok, it can lead to a craving for privilege and celebrity at others’ expense. In short, this
instinct, unharnessed, can lead to racism and moral decay. It can obliterate democracy.
Over the last thirty-four years the Breakfast Committee has brought to you some of this nation’s greatest leaders and speakers.
Our efforts in doing so were aimed at stimulating our community –at-large to continue to do the work that Dr. King so ably
brought to our attention: cooperative community empowerment through the collective efforts of churches, businesses, the
public sector and private individuals. Dr. King was about coalition and partnership building that would lead to the betterment
of our communities. This year’s honorees continue to be persons whose lives are emblematic of Dr. King’s ideals.
This year our keynote speaker is the Reverend Tisha Dixon-Williams. Rev. Williams is a Senior Administrative Assistant at
Time Warner, Inc. She currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Black Employees at Time Warner Business Resource Group.
Rev. Williams is the published author of a book, entitled Who’s That Lady? Rev. Williams is the newly installed Senior
Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton, New York.
Again, the Breakfast Committee thanks you for your participation and support.
Sincerely,
Charles A. Coverdale

In Recognition of the late
Rev. Dr. Marvin Dozier
“I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race, I
have kept the faith.” II
Timothy 4:7
We honor the life of the
Reverend Dr. Marvin
Dozier, a friend and
brother beloved. Pastor
Dozier worked with the
MLK, Jr. Memorial
Breakfast early in the
beginning years. He
was a faithful member
of the MLK, Jr.
Memorial Breakfast
Committee for many
years; he was a staunch
supporter of the MLK
Breakfast event until God
called him to eternal rest on
June 17, 2018.
The officers and members of the First
Baptist Church of Riverhead acknowledge and salute Pastor Dozier’s deep
devotion and contributions to the success of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial Breakfast for these past 34 years. Rev. Dozier’s spirit, smile, joy, and
tireless effort helped to bring life to this massive but worthwhile undertaking.
To his family, friends, the Unity Baptist Church family, and all of you who enjoy the
MLK Memorial Breakfast each year, we say let us always remember that Rev.
Dozier was a drum major for social justice who worked to uphold Dr. King’s
legacy. Let us always remember his tremendous contribution.

REVEREND TISHA WILLIAMS
Reverend Tisha Williams is a proud product of Brooklyn,
NY. She currently serves as the Sr. Pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Bridgehampton. She answered the divine call of
sharing Christ with the world in June 2008 and was licensed
as a preacher and teacher of the Gospel in October of the
same year. Reverend Williams was ordained in October 2014.
Pastor Williams has a servant’s heart and is passionate about
ministry and the work that God has called her to do. Truly,
she has devoted her ministerial and professional careers to
addressing the whole person as it relates to one’s spiritual and
emotional well-being.
As the creator and facilitator of Who’s That Lady? she conducts
in-depth bible studies and workshops that highlight women of
the bible, revealing how their lives mirror ours in this present
day. Proving that through it all, God’s mercy still endures,
Who’s That Lady? has become a national movement that in 2018 expanded to Kenya and Uganda. Her
first book, “Who’s That Lady? A Study of the Lesser-Known Women of the Bible” is scheduled for
a Summer 2019 release.
Together with her husband, she created the marriage ministry program, “Your Marriage T.H.D. -
Touched, Healed and Delivered”. It is their sole objective to share this program, using it to fortify
and bless married couples all over the world. Using biblical principles and focused exercises, they help
couples better understand marriage and God’s plan for it.
Reverend Williams is currently pursuing a degree in Christian Studies and holds a certificate in
Theology and Ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary. She is also a 2016 Fellow of the
Princeton Theological Seminary Black Theology and Leadership Institute.
Fun-loving and full of life, Pastor Williams is also a bit of an adventurist. She has successfully sky
dived, bungee jumped, and completed a one-mile swim race in the Long Island Sound. In 2014, she
climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa in support of the American Foundation for Children
with AIDS. Her motto is, “she believed she could, so she did”.
Nevertheless, considering all her accomplishments, she is proudest of her roles as “Tia” to her amazing
nieces and nephews, “G-Ma” to her eight beautiful God-children, “Mom” to her two pups Lucy and
Ethel and wife to the love of her life, Deacon Lawrence Williams, her husband of 21 years.
Rev. Tish firmly believes that her life is a true reflection of Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom
of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

• And we are drifting there because nations are caught up with the drum major instinct. ‘I
must be first.’ ‘I must be supreme.’… And I am sad to say that the nation in which we live is
the supreme culprit. And I’m going to continue to say it to America, because I love this
country too much to see the drift that it has taken.
• God didn’t call America to
do what she’s doing in the
world now…. But God has a
way of even putting nations
in their place. (Amen) The
God that I worship has a
way of saying ‘Don’t play
with me.’ (Yes) He has a
way of saying… ‘Don’t play
with me, Israel. Don’t play
with me, Babylon. (Yes) Be
still and know that I’m
God.’
• But [Jesus] reordered
priorities. And he said, ‘Yes,
don’t give up this instinct.
It’s a good instinct if you
use it right. (Yes) It’s a
good instinct if you don’t
distort it and pervert it….
Keep feeling the need for
being first. But I want you
to be first in love. (Amen) I
want you to be first in
moral excellence. I want
you to be first in generosity.
That is what I want you to
do.’ …. And so Jesus gave us
a new norm of greatness. If
you want to be important –
wonderful. If you want to
be recognized – wonderful.
If you want to be great –
wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. (Amen)
That’s a new definition of greatness.
• And this morning, the thing that I like about it: by giving that definition of greatness, it
means that everybody can be great, (Everybody) because everybody can serve. (Amen)….
You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know
Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of
thermodynamics in physics to serve. (Amen) You only need a heart full of grace, (Yes, sir,
Amen) a soul generated by love. (Yes) And you can be that servant.

CHRISTY BANKS
Christy Banks, currently the Assistant Director of Campus Activities
and Multicultural Affairs at Suffolk County Community College’s
Brentwood campus, has spent her career inspiring, supporting and
assisting others in their journey for personal and professional growth.
Christy’s parents, Nadine and Gerald Jean, are natives of Haiti who
immigrated to America and made Brentwood home. Her parents
ingrained in their three children that hard work and education were
both vital tools for their future. Mr. and Mrs. Jean kept their cultural
roots alive throughout Christy’s childhood even while living in a new
country. Christy attributes much of her successes to the foundation
her parents gave her.
Christy’s passion to bring forth the struggles and injustices of
marginalized and underrepresented groups to a larger audience began
early in her college career while she was obtaining her Bachelor of
Arts degree at St. John’s University. She visited underrepresented
communities to gain a real sense of their concerns, and it was through
her writing that she found ways to share and push to the forefront
the issues of those less fortunate.
Christy’s journey always led her to work with those in need. After obtaining her master’s degree in journalism
from Syracuse University, she went on to work with homeless veterans for a Salvation Army grant funded
program. Christy assisted homeless veterans with their reintegration into the community by providing them
with workshops that included writing, goal setting, and self-development. It was her affection for writing that
helped her advocate for the veterans of these programs to gain better support and much needed assistance.
As Ms. Banks’ career continued, she was later hired by St. Joseph’s College to create an inclusive campus
environment that fostered diversity through the education and empowerment of students from diverse
backgrounds. Christy brought to the school, opportunities for students to engage in a variety of programs,
interactive workshops, and events that allowed for intercultural and cross-cultural dialogue, understanding and
respect. Over a span of almost 13 years, she played an integral role in providing St. Joseph’s Long Island campus
with ways to explore diversity and cultural humility.
Christy’s dedication to equality carries over in every aspect of her work. In addition to her role in higher
education, she obtained her real estate sales license to help underrepresented groups buy or sell homes on
Long Island. Through Christy’s careers in both higher education and real estate, she has observed the lack of
access to homeownership, education and jobs and tries to ensure there is equal opportunity for all. Whenever
possible she also collects donations for her homeland of Haiti, mentors underrepresented youth, and provides
underrepresented groups with first-time homebuyer information.
Christy is now sharing her diversified knowledge with her own daughter, Angelique. She hopes that she can pass
along the values that were once shared with her, and apply them with not only her daughter, but to her students,
colleagues and clients.

ROGER CLAYMAN
Since July 2005, Roger Clayman has served as the Executive Director of the
Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, the fourth largest labor council
in the country. The local Federation is the voice for 250,000 union members
and their families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
The Long Island Federation of Labor speaks for local unions and their members
at every level of government. The Federation has focused on gaining good jobs
and housing in local communities; rebuilding Long Island’s infrastructure;
and providing leadership training for the next generation of union leaders.
The Federation is deeply involved with economic development, including
proposals to create jobs in the offshore wind industry. It has established
an effective legislative and political program to promote the needs of union
families on Long Island.
In addition, the Federation is deeply involved in community coalitions
working closely with Long Island Jobs with Justice to promote immigrants’
rights and economic empowerment for workers fighting exploitation and unsafe working conditions. Recently
the Federation established a committee for Union Women to provide training and inspiration for the rest of the
labor movement from this key constituency.
Mr. Clayman came to the Long Island Federation of Labor after a 30-year career with the National AFL-CIO
where he was involved with organizing, political and collective bargaining campaigns around the country. In
1978, he assisted the American Federation of Teachers in a successful campaign to organize 600 professionals
at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The 1980-81 campaign at Yale University resulted in 2,600
clerical and technical employees joining the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union (now part of UNITE).
He represented the AFL-CIO in several large newspaper strikes, including a coordinating role in the New
York Daily News Strike in 1991. In 1997-98 he was the Northeast Regional Coordinator for the Strawberry
Campaign in support of the United Farm Workers.
Roger started his career in 1973 with the National AFL-CIO Civil Rights Department. At that time the
AFL-CIO was focused on tearing down discriminatory hiring and promotional practices and gaining entry for
minorities into the building and construction trades. Roger met labor and civil rights leader Bayard Rustin and
worked with him and other union leaders to establish chapters of the A. Philip Randolph Institute to promote
the interests of black trade unionists. He also helped coordinate the founding conference for the Labor Council
for Latin American Advancement to empower Hispanic trade unionists.
In recent years, Roger has worked closely with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and
Suffolk Counties along with partners in government and the community to establish a pre-apprenticeship
program, Opportunities Long Island. The program recruits primarily young minority men and women from
economically challenged communities and helps them gain entry into the construction trades. The goal is to
provide life-long careers and build wealth in communities where larger economic development plans have been
proposed, such as Hempstead, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Uniondale.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Roger Clayman currently lives in Port Jefferson, New York with his wife Lillian.
They have two grown children, David and Rebecca.

OLIVER COUTRIER
Oliver Coutrier has been a life-long resident of Suffolk County Long
Island. An alumnus of Amityville High School, Mr. Coutrier earned
a degree in Pharmacy from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
After completing college, Mr. Coutrier returned to Long Island to
become one of only a few African American community pharmacists
in the Pathmark Supermarket chain. During his 35-year tenure at
Pathmark, Mr. Coutrier was able to address many neighborhood
health concerns, especially as the supervising pharmacist at the
Copiague store, which had a very large African American clientele.
Oliver Coutrier has been active in many community organizations
including Amityville Civic Association, Parent Teachers Association
at Half Hollow Hills, The Father’s Club of Wheatley Heights, Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wyandanch and Chi Rho Chapter of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. During his tenure with the Amityville
Civic Association, Oliver was instrumental in establishing the “Weed
and Seed” program to address the issue of drug abuse; ultimately, his
efforts led to the development of business in a blighted area located
at the intersection of Albany Ave. and Great Neck Road. At the
Parent Teachers Association of Half Hollow Hills, Mr. Coutrier was
the only father actively involved; the group successfully raised funds for many of the programs at the school. As
a member of The Father’s Club of Wheatley Heights, Oliver Coutrier created programs that supported African
American students who lived in the community. These programs fostered interaction between fathers and their
own or other children, enabling participants to be involved in positive and constructive activities that were
interesting to them.
Oliver Coutrier is active in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wyandanch. He volunteers at the Mercy
Inn, which provides meals to the community of Wyandanch as well as others in need.
Through a mentoring collaborative between Chi Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Suffolk
County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Eastern Shore (NY) Chapter of The Links,
Incorporated, Oliver is a mentor to students at The Central Islip High School. The mentoring program delivered
at Central Islip High School consists of connecting students with various community partners such as the Job
Corps, Job Placement and the Police Department. Additionally, Oliver has been active in taking high school
students on college tours to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as Lincoln University.
Oliver has been married to Karen Coutrier for over 38 years. They have two children, Nicole and Philip.

TIJUANA FULFORD
Tijuana Fulford is the Founder and Executive Director of an allvolunteer
organization called The Butterfly Effect Project. Three years
ago, the program had only eight girls from economically deprived
and disenfranchised communities in Riverhead and the Flanders
area of Long Island. Growing by “leaps and bounds”, The Butterfly
Effect Project now serves over 437 children. Many of the “butterflies”
are from underserved communities. Mrs. Fulford tirelessly dedicates
her life to changing their lives. Many of these youngsters lack the
practical and psychological tools necessary to ensure a stable future.
Tia, as her friends call her, was once one of these girls.
No stranger to adversity, Tia learned early, from her severely dyslexic
mother, to be independent and never give up. Tia says her mother
relied on her to be the “brains” of the family. By the time she was ten years old she became an expert on the
Department of Social Services, as she was the one who constantly filled out all the necessary paperwork. Her
crack-addicted father was often violent. However, Tia says her father loved her, and that she now lives by the
words he once told her, “Tia you are stronger than you know, don’t accept this life; make your own.” Every day
she tells herself and the Butterfly Effect girls, “I am strong; I am beautiful; I am thankful.”
As a teenager, Tia was strongly influenced by her town’s local historian, who became her mentor. She taught Tia
how to become self-confident, stay out of trouble and live life to the fullest.
Tia tries to share her life’s lessons with her Butterflies. With the help of a few volunteers, Tia meets with the girls
weekly, takes them on field trips, organizes community events, fund raises, and is constantly thinking of ways
to help the “butterflies”. The Butterfly Effect Project provides, free of charge, a safe environment for girls to learn
confidence-building skills, as well as help them with everything from homework, obtaining school supplies,
mentoring, social services advice, to lessons on how to sit and eat at a table. Vital information about clothing
assistance, housing, food pantries, outreach programs, and a variety of social services are also available to the
families. Tia’s ultimate goal is to make it possible for the girls not to miss any opportunity to better their lives.
The “butterflies” guide Tia as often as she guides them. Recently, when they told her they were worried that
their neighbors did not have enough food to eat, she helped the girls organize a food walk. They went door to
door every Saturday, bringing those in need sandwiches, fresh fruit and juice. They walked over five miles before
meeting their goal of delivering food to their needy neighbors.
While Tia has garnered some support from groups such as the Suffolk Federal Credit Union, Teachers Federal
Credit Union, the Riverhead Rotary, FRNCA, Women of the Moose, Peconic Bay Zonta, Long Island
Community Foundation, State Farm Insurance, and local government, the organization runs on a limited
budget. All money raised goes directly to the children.
Tia’s community has recognized her outstanding work. She was named Person of the Year by The Riverhead News
Review, won a Humanitarian Award from New York State, and a Proclamation from the town of Riverhead.
Tia is married to Troy Fulford. The couple has three children, Jaliek, Alexandria, and Genesis.

First and foremost, I would like to thank Tijuana
Fulford for being a mother, my friend, and most of all
my wife, before anything.
She continues to have visions of success that trigger
growth, not only within herself, but within
communities all over Long Island.
Her biggest challenge in life has been the Butterfly
Effect Project. For years, she has sacrificed her time
and effort to save lives and fortify the beliefs and hopes
of younger youth.
As her biggest fan, I just want to say “Thank you”
for all you have done and continue to do.
Love,
Troy

You Can Help
There are many ways to become a part of the movement to grow the Family Community Life Center. Consider becoming a
monthly sustaining donor to the Family Community Life Center. For less than $3.00/day ($85.00/month), in twelve months,
your tax-deductible gift will earn you the designation of “FCLC Seedling Donor” and an engraved pin that you can wear proudly,
signifying your commitment.
We celebrate with
gratitude those who
have sown the seed
and faithfully
nurtured the vision
We want Riverhead to be a place where families can grow and thrive and in order to do that, we need your help. If you would like
to make a difference in your community and are passionate about Riverhead, consider joining us. It takes a village and the Family
Community Life Center is that village. The Family Community Life Center is the place you wish you had when you were a kid,
and we are looking for people like you to join us, to make our community the best it can be. Your monetary donations are always
welcome. No amount is too small. Every dollar invested in the Family Community Life Center is an investment in our community
and our future.
